Wacky Wednesday: Back at the Homestead
I’m spent from a long but amazing day at Book Expo America, complete with celebrity sightings, one of the most incredible meals of my life, and a cocktail party at a rooftop bar. Before you get too impressed you should know that my feet are swollen to the point of elephantiasis, I inadvertently and embarrassingly dropped and shattered my water glass at the party like I was mad at it and I just spent the last fifteen minutes skyping misty-eyed... God Made the Grand Canyon
But He lives in Sedona. When we sat at home planning our Spring Break in soggy January, eating soggy cereal in our slippers, soggy from fetching a soggy newspaper, we knew we wanted somewhere dry. And warm. And for reasons I can’t fully articulate, I wanted to go to the Grand Canyon. I have a deep faith, a faith that has deepened and widened in beautiful layers of strife and renewal in my life. Though I am certainly inspired by all the... Read More
No “But Mama Peas”
“But Mama Pea,” you are saying to yourself. “I’ve had a busy day.” “It was almost as busy as yesterday, except instead of rushing to the dentist, we were rushing to ballet. A task made infinitely harder by the fact that we were out of blueberries and that now instead of spending thirty seconds brushing our teeth, we now spend thirteen meticulous minutes.” “I’m tired. And have very white teeth.” “But... Read More
Best Friends With Rings
Pea Daddy and I became best friends ten years ago. Seven years ago, we became best friends with rings. Someone had a plan, and as a result, it’s been five years since we became best friends with rings…and kids. Since Gigi came along, we have never spent the night alone in a hotel together. We went on an overnight date once when Gigi was two, but since I was seven months pregnant, technically Lulu was there and I had the bulging belly, hemorrhoids... Read More
So About That Dinner Recipe
Aside from freeing children from piranha dining room chairs, we had quite a busy day yesterday. Homework. Work. Working out. Housework. And horse work. Even before we nearly amputated Lulu’s leg, we had our trying moments, our tiring moments and our teaching moments. Like when I learned that the only thing worse the hearing Wham!’s “Last Christmas” being sung over and over again is hearing it be sung over and over again by Gigi. On January... Read More
Thanks for Asking
If you’ve been reading for awhile, you may have noticed that I almost never post on Friday nights. “What ARE you doing?” you might ask. “Washing your hair?” Yes. “Visiting the elderly?” Yes. “Making your husband and children drive 35 miles to go to your favorite stores in the entire world to participate in one of your favorite activities in the entire world?” Yes and yes. “Is Pea Daddy still sporting that smokin’ stubble…... Leaving the Nest
I want my babies to stay babies forever. Unhealthfully so. I’m pretty sure Lulu would still be breastfeeding were it not for that nasty back injury and not wanting to pump her bloodstream full of Vicodin. Although my OB/GYN said at a recent appointment that she would have been fine nursing even with the narcotics. Shh…don’t tell Pea Daddy, I think he wants that week of his life back that he spent “weaning” while... Read More
Pea Mail: On Being Social
The weekend has officially caught up to me, and so has my inbox. So rather than make a healthier vegan granola for you this morning, I thought I’d answer a question that was asked of me several times over the weekend. It’s not, “Why is your child eating the butter balls of my plate like they are gumdrops?” (this happened at the wedding reception and it was Lulu. She likes butter more than Paula Deen). The question instead... Read More
Unspoken Rules
There are some guiding principles in our house that have never been said out loud. Until now. Pea Kitty is the sole responsibility of Pea Daddy. This cat hates me. I’m afraid I might die soon, though, because the last two nights in a row she’s curled up in between my legs while I sleep. I know it’s not for affection. I suspect she is acting like the nursing home cat that visits the elderly patients that are about to pass. ... Read More
I Am Protein
And Pro-Teen. He’s dreamy. And in third grade. Thanks for everyone’s supportive comments on the new road I’m heading down. Very few of you voted for a one liner about potty training and a vegan cookie recipe, though you’ll probably get that tomorrow anyway, so put on your plastic pants and preheat your oven. As for how this will play out blog-wise, I may return to the food diary format on some days and on others just have... Read More
Site Under Construction
After my tough but enjoyable workout this morning, I came into a tangle of tent poles and two girls yapping at my heels to put together their playhouse. The poles are tethered together with thin, nylon rope, and somehow in her excitement, Gigi managed to twist and knot those poles together as if she were deliberately trying to create a Survivor challenge for her sweaty, hungry, desperate for a cup of coffee mom. Still, miracles happen. $8.50... Read More
Irresistible
I couldn’t resist my craving for a green smoothie in a bowl this morning. 3 handfuls of spinach almond milk ice frozen strawberries frozen pineapple stevia 1/2 scoop protein powder cinnamon Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Spice Granola A little trick I’ve been using is to blend my spinach with the almond milk before adding anything else. That way, the spinach gets blended up really quickly and I don’t have to stand there with my... Read More

A Day With A Peel
I can’t leave you hanging on the pumpkin situation. Despite my protest desperate excuse that it was still too early and our pumpkins would turn into blue furry mushballs before Halloween, we did in fact get a carvin’. We had a fool proof system. Lulu gutted. Gigi and I drew. Did you know that having your tongue out increases your concentration by 40%? Uh…yeah…and you are also a winner in the British National Lottery…please... Read More
Isn’t it Ironic?
Isn’t it ironic that while doing Jillian Michaels’ Power Sculpt this morning, I tried to prevent back injury while putting down a dumbbell, so I threw it in our chair and proceeded to tear a hole…in it’s back? Oops. I’m such an animal. Isn’t it ironic that while Gigi was at school learning to write her ABC’s, I had a K-inspired ABC breakfast? Apple, Banana, Coffee, Doughnut. Isn’t it ironic that... While You Were Sleeping
This morning I awoke to hear a cackle coming from Gigi’s room. There is no better time than 7:30 a.m. on October 17th to try on your Halloween costume. Again. Once Gigi informed me that she was in fact her in disguise and not an actual witch, I made a quick breakfast. ~1/3 c. Kashi Go Lean 1 peach, sliced cinnamon ~2 T.
