Minding My Peas
“Children confront us with our paradoxes and dishonesty, and we are exposed. You need to find an answer for every why — Why do we do this? Why don’t we do that? — and often there isn’t a good one. So you say, simply, because. Or you tell a story that you know isn’t true. And whether or not your face reddens, you blush. The shame of parenthood — which is a good shame — is that we want our children to be more whole than we are, to have satisfactory answers. My children not only inspired me to reconsider what kind of eating animal I would be, but also shamed me into reconsideration.” -Jonathan Safran Foer, Eating Animals

I’ve been a mom for five years and a vegetarian turned vegan for almost two. In that time, I’ve also managed to successfully transition my husband and two daughters to a vegetarian diet. I’ve become a more conscious eater, a more conscious citizen of Earth and most importantly, a more conscious parent.
Me (Mama Pea), Gigi, Pea Daddy and Lulu
It starts with me.

I lead by example. If I skip meals, eat fast food and park it on the couch for Real Housewives marathons, my girls will too. So I try to live a balanced life, embracing a plant-based diet, exercising for health and fun, and moderately feeding my appetite for trashy reality TV. Though I was a college athlete turned runner, including a few half marathons, I suffered a major back injury in 2009, resulting in surgery and an end to my competitive running days. Still, I manage to get moving somehow each day, even if it’s just lifting Lulu off of her sister’s bruised body because she tried to steal the last few sips of her smoothie.

Because they have been exposed to a variety of healthy foods, the girls have learned to love oatmeal, fruit smoothies, banana soft serve, spinach, broccoli, soy yogurt, almond butter and even tempeh.

I’m not the perfect mom by any means. There are days when the closest thing I get to a shower is a baby wipe and a fresh coat of deodorant, and when dinner is a box of Chik’n Nuggets. But at least I know that those nuggets didn’t have a mother, and I always serve them with a side of peas.

You’re such an inspiration.
I’ve done the whole starve-myself-and-be-skinny thing, and now through veganism I’m finding such balance. I know now that one day I can lead my kids down their own healthy path.

I really love your blog! it always makes me smile
also I just watched an episode of Gilmore girls where a lady is going to name her baby Gigi and wants her to be a ballerina! and it made me think of your little girl
I love and miss Gilmore Girls so much! So Gigi isn’t really our daughter’s name, but a nickname I gave her AFTER watching THAT very Gilmore Girls episode (but it does go with her real name too).

Family is so important (as is being a present, positive roll model while your girls are at such a formative age)! I’m glad it’s a big deal to you. I love babysitting and in college, it adds a lot of balance and merit to my life to be in a family atmosphere for a change (it’s hard being lectured at by old men all day). No mom is perfect, but loving despite imperfection can be!

I love your blog!!! Your kids are so adorable
I don’t have any of my own (hopefully someday!!), but I have been a vegetarian for over half my life now and have given a lot of thought to raising my kids that way as well. I actually became a vegetarian because of my own mother, who gave up meat when I was 12. She raised all her girls that way (4 of us…the youngest being only 3 or 4 at the time) and none of us have ever had any sort of deficiency or anything. And we’re all still vegetarians to this day. So it goes to show you that it’s definitely a healthy way to raise your family (and that a parent’s influence is SOOO important)!! Anyway, the point of this rambling comment is that I’m looking forward to reading more

OMG! Blast from the past. So I definitely read your blog when I first started reading ages ago and haven’t read it in over a year. The last time I read was right when you had surgery. When did you switch over to the new name? What was your old blog called? I’m so glad I rediscovered it! Hopefully you’ll stop over to mine sometime!

I just ran across your blog today and I love it! I’m not vegan but some of your recipes look just delicious! Even more-so than non-vegan ones! Your stories about your children are great, too, keep up the great work! =)

I do not know if you ever look in this area at comments anymore but if you do I was just wondering what do you tell people when they ask why you are vegan? I am the only vegan I know and the only other vegetarian I know is my 20 year old daughter! I am constantly being asked why why why and what do I eat? Some people even give me a hard time and will talk about how great meat is and how the cow probably enjoyed giving up their life for that hamburger! or milk or cheese ….just fill in the blank! I am getting really annoyed by all of these and just do not quite know what to say anymore!
Hi, Kim. No one really ever asks me why I am vegan…it’s pretty accepted here in the Pacific Northwest, fortunately. But if I am asked to explain why I don’t consume animal products, I tell people it’s a personal choice that we’ve made. If they are interested in learning more about it, I talk about the mistreatment and unsanitary conditions at factory farms. I talk about how I raise my children to treat animals and life in general with respect. I talk about how I cannot wrap my brain around the idea of drinking a milk that was created for another species’ babies. I talk about how for the last fifty years, we’ve been fed propaganda about the “need” to eat meat and drink milk by government agencies and big businesses who have no interest in my “real health” and more interest in making a buck. I tell them I’ve seen Food, Inc. and the Earthlings trailer. I tell them I’ve read Fast Food Nation, In Defense of Food and Diet for a New America. I also tell them that I really feel good eating a plant based diet, that I have more energy and that I am proud of what I feed my family. And I offer them a vegan meal any time they’d like to come over!
