40 Veg-Friendly Recipes for Your Superbowl
Are you ready for some football?
I’m going to claim a permanent “no” on that one.
But I’m ready for some creative commercials.
A whole heap of Beyoncé. (I am so pleased to know that “Beyoncé” is in spell check with a little accent over the ‘e’. She’s earned that, don’t you think?)
And bring. on. the. eats.
If you don’t know what you’re making yet, I’ve updated our list of veg-friendly favorites for your Superbowl spread.
I’m ready.
Let’s do this.
Snacks and appetizers:
![]()
Pizza Pockets : this easy app is made from pre-made pizza dough and filled with all your favorite toppings.
Sangria for All : a non-alcoholic treat for the whole crew.
Dill Pickle French Fries : tangy, salty and totally craveable. Cut your own ‘taters or take a shortcut with Alexia fries.
Ranch Oyster Crackers : just like the kind made with the packet, but without the junk.
Spicy Black Bean Dip : a knockoff (and even tastier?) version of Trader Joe’s dip.
Almost Chipotle Guacamole : You don’t have to pay $1.50 extra for this.
![]()
Salt and Lime Tortilla Chips with Strawberry Avocado Salsa : I can’t get enough of these tart and salty chips. If you can’t find strawberries in season, you can sub pomegranate seeds or even diced orange segments.
Mexican Lettuce Wraps : build-your-own wraps of roasted chickpeas, veggies and all your favorite taco trimmings.
Black Bean and Roasted Corn Nacho Bites with Avocado Crema : these bite-sized cups pack a powerful flavor punch.
Ain’t No Butter Chex Mix : a dairy-free version of the traditional recipe.
Soft Pretzels w/ Nacho Mmmm Sauce : grab a teasing comb and your hairspray, we’re going to the mall.
Curry Kale Chips : anybody can buy a bag of potato chips. These nutritious and zesty chips will stand out in the crowd.
7 Layer Dip : it wouldn’t be Superbowl without it.
Main Courses:

Falafel Stuffed Pitas with Tahini Sauce : hearty, crispy falafel with a rich, tangy spread.
Slow Cooker Seitan Carnitas : if you haven’t tried seitan, this is the way to do it: juicy, flavorful and easy, served on tortillas with all the fixins.
Philly Cheese Steaks on Pretzel Subs : marinated mushrooms are piled with onions and cheese, and served on homemade pretzel buns.
Spicy Tofu Soft Tacos : tofu is marinated in zesty spices and then broiled before being stuffed in soft tortillas with lettuce, tomatoes, salsa and the like.
BBQ Black Bean Pita Pizzas : it doesn’t get easier than this. Barbecue sauce, black beans, cheese and pineapple on store-bought whole wheat pitas.
Border Bean Burritos with Mild Sauce : just like Taco Bell without the unwanted repercussions.
Tastier Eggplant Burgers : eggplant is sautéed with Mediterranean spices and flavors and then melded together into a hearty patty that is pan-fried and served on a whole wheat bun.
![]()
Black-eyed Pea Salad : some call it cowboy caviar, but with roasted corn, peppers, black-eyed peas, chili powder, cumin and lime, I call it delicious.
Big Fat Greek Veggie Burgers : big Greek patties made of chickpeas, kalamata olives, feta cheese and all sorts of Greek flavors.
Yukon Gold White Bean Basil Burgers : part mashed potatoes and part white beans, this herby, crispy burger is the best of both worlds.
Tempeh Tamale Pie : tempeh is grated and combined with beans, tomato sauce and spices and topped with a corny, cheesy cornbread crust before baking. Yum.
Curried Sweet Potato Tater Tot Casserole : a healthified, Indian-twist on the old cafeteria favorite.
Tofu and Mushroom Lettuce Cups : broiled tofu, tangy sauce and mushrooms is stuffed into lettuce leaves along with fresh herbs and veggies.
Sloppy Josephines : Joes are beef. Josephines are French lentils. Oooh la la.
Loaded Baked Potato Soup : You can load this potato soup with all sorts of toppings (and it’s also loaded with a secret veggie…shhh….)
Sweets and Treats:

Chocolate Covered Cookie Dough Footballs : these little cookie dough balls taste even better than they look. And they’re cute little buggers.
Totally Oatmeal Scotchies : a gluten-free, whole grain version of what may very well be my favorite cookie ever.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Pie : call it a pizzokie if you like. Just make it.
Coconut Curry Caramel Corn : Cracker Jacks are for baseball. This is for YOU.
Almond Joy Cookie Bars : one of my very first recipes, with oats, coconut, almond butter and chocolate chips, it’s a winner.
Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Balls : you can’t beat these doughy, peanut buttery, melt in your mouth treats.
![]()
Hello Dolly Bars : you can make these “magic” bars with your own homemade sweetened condensed milk. Studded with chocolate chips, coconut, butterscotch and roasted nuts, they are irresistible.
Snickerdoodle Blondies : the same flavors of your favorite cinnamony cookie, but in a gooey gluten-free bar.
Cookie Dough Dip : a dairy-free, cashew based cookie dough dip for dunking pretzels, fruit slices and faces.
Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies : these chocolate chip cookies are anything but generic. The extra step of browning the butter is more than worth it.
Double Chocolate Single Chin Brownies : heavy on chocolate, light(er) on calories. Win win.
Peanut Butter Blondies with Chocolate Ganache : another oldie, but a goodie. These dairy-free bars are almost more like peanut butter fudge than cake, and the ganache puts them totally over the top.
So there you have it. And now I’m hungry.
Enjoy the game and your weekend, friends!

I’m coming to your house to watch the game…err commercials and eat snacks.
So what time should I stop by?
After 8. You can’t actually watch the game when the girls are up.
Holy moly – 40 recipes! Your internet queendom is a mecca of yum! Thanks Mama Pea… you make football tolerable. You and Beyoncé.
Mostly Bey.
You forgot your pb dough ball cookies! I think the post is titled ‘Having a Ball’ ??? All I know is those cookies are like CRACK in our house (or what I imagine crack would be like, I’m not 100%). No gluten free here, bring me the ap flour all the way!
BTW, your ‘Hello Dolly’ bar recipe is by far one of the BEST with the homemade condensed milk.
Here’s the link to that dough ball recipe, Amelia.

And I am so glad you like both of the recipes!
Such a great idea for a post! Most superbowl foods seem to naturally be devoid of veggies, and that’s a shame.
Thanks! I totally agree that veggies deserve their place in the spread!
Mmmm all of this sounds great! I won’t be watching much football this weekend because I’m moving, but I’ve got some friends helping me out and I know they’ll be hungry. These are all perfect! Thanks Mama Pea!
Happy moving! Friends that help you move are a whole ‘nother level of friend. Lucky you!
I’ve never watched the superbowl hahaha but I’d watch it to be able to eat snacks on the couch
I made your Coconut Curry Caramel Corn last weekend for Family Movie Night, and it was a HUGE hit with the whole family!! In fact, they loved it so much that I’m making it again tonight for Girls’ Night. :~)
Oh goodie! I love this recipe too, so I’m glad you agree.
I watch for the commercials … and because I can get away with eating as much as I want while everyone else is wrapped up in the game
Haha, Seth and I don’t care about football at all, so we watch just for the commercials…and so we have an excuse to eat our traditional taco salads.
Might have to make your strawberry salsa to go with our salads!
that 7 layer dip… always a hit wherever i take it!! thanks for making people love me
I’ll have one of all of ‘em.
OK two. Twist my arm.
Thanks for the ideas! I want to try the pizza pockets.
You should…they are a cinch!
Let’s face it, The Superbowl is just a fantastic reason to eat, drink, and laugh at cheesy commercials. Love these recipes. Thanks for sharing Sarah!
Have a great weekend, Lauren!
Oooh I love the little footballs! The kids and I made them for a bake sale once and they weren’t as cute as yours! Jed’s coming over for Superbowl, apparently. Why does he get all the good snacks?
I wish you could come too! Maybe I’ll bring treats to you!
I love these recipe recap posts because it reminds me of so many recipes of yours that I’ve wanted to try but haven’t gotten around to yet. I’m torn between the Greek burgers (which I haven’t tried) and the Falafel (which I have made multiple times and are amazing….). Ohhh, and oyster crackers for my nephew’s birthday (my nephews all prefer savory to sweet treats so this is perfect).
I make my husband watch the Superbowl…I tell him we need it for watercooler talk at work the next day.
Have a great weekend!
Hmm, I’m no help, I love both the falafel & the Greek burgers! The oyster crackers are so addictive–look out!
Fantastic list. Love strawberry or even peach salsas. And I really need to try making my own falafels.
In my opinion The Super Bowl is all about the half time show and commercials! And even MORE about the food! Before you even posted this post, we had a veg comfort food line up ALL from YOU! Here goes:
Nacho mmmmmm sauce with lots of items to dip (veggies, chips)
Margarita Smoothie’s ( a splash of tequila will get added)
Thai Veggie burgers
Mango cupcakes
Let the games begin!
Do let me know how your spread goes over. Yum!
could you come to my house and make this stuff for me?
i’d like it all.
I bet you guys have a fun party. Let’s do it!
If we lived closer, this would happen. I’m sure we won’t even watch the game
But I guess I should make some good snacking food.
The strawberry avocado salsa is my absolute fav, and I just got some strawberries in my produce co-op basket Wednesday, so I will make that! And I make the salt & lime tortilla chips often. And you listed so many of my other favorites!
I don’t like football, either, and don’t care about the Super Bowl, but I may watch for the commercials and switch over to the Puppy Bowl.
By the way, new puppies are on the puppy cam: they are about a month old: http://explore.org/#!/live-cams/player/service-puppy-cam
You just made Lulu’s Sunday.
Food and commercials–exactly where I am at
. Looks like a great round up of healthy recipes for the game!
The chocolate covered footballs are so cute. I basically just enjoy the Superbowl for the food and commercials too
wow…after reading all these recipes my very handsome, smart, gentle and strong, poetry writing, true peacemaker,non-football-watching husband and i are going to PRETEND we are having a superbowl party! and i reluctantly, begrudgingly bought brussel sprouts last nite to make your crispy-orange recipe today…i have clearly come to trust you my friend, which is high praise coming from me! thank you for all the work you did to put together this post! what a godsend it surely is to many and a pure delight for the rest of us (the bookworms and such)!
Hi Mama Pea! Even though I’ve been a loyal pea since 2010, I don’t always get a chance to make every recipe that catches my eye. I dug up the Slow Cooker Taco Soup and Meatless Loaf recipes this week having LONG put them off…boy do I wish I had made these sooner! Both phenomenal! Even my 10 month old loved the meatless loaf!
Okay, football is not my thing. But food like this is something I can get behind! Yum. Great lineup!
Yum, Sarah! That all looks so great! Such good ideas for me to think about this weekend
Pearl
I am squealing right now that you have a blog again. I’ve missed you!
Oh goodness! Now I am stuck at work for 3 more hours starving and dreaming of someone making me any and all of this amazing looking food!!!!! Since my team didn’t get to the superbowl I think I will head straight home from church and just cook and eat and watch a good movie!!!
Made your pizza pockets for NYE, they were such a hit with big people & little people alike! My 5 yo specifically requested them for tomorrow! Thanks!
That’s great! Your boy has good taste
Hi – just wanted to let you know that my husband told me at 10am on Sunday that we were supposed to bring “food” to his new boss’s Superbowl party that evening. You can imagine the scene of domestic bliss that followed. At the time, I happened to be catching up on blog reading, saw this post, saw the Pizza Pockets, sent him to the pizza place down the block and made Pizza Pockets to bring with us. They were a hit! No leftovers and a bunch of requests for the recipe. Thanks!
So great, Erin! Thanks for the very fun feedback!
