More Things I’m Crazy About Right Now

1. Other People’s Recipes:  I love to cook good recipes, even if they aren’t mine.  My mouth and my family, were super happy this weekend thanks to Jessica’s Better Than Crack Brownies and Matt’s (Kath’s husband) Whole Wheat Pizza Crust.

To Matt’s crust, I added red sauce, sundried tomatoes, broccoli, caramelized onions, artichoke hearts, Kalamata olives, fresh mozzarella and herbed feta.

To Jessica’s brownies, I added my face.

2.  Downton Abbey:  I know, I’m late to the party.  I’m currently blowing through Season 1 on my treadmill, in the early morning while everyone else is sleeping.  And then I come in and serve tea and speak in a British accent.

I’m super ticked, though, because yesterday I happened upon this post, which spoiled one major plot point for me just in the photo shown before giving a spoiler alert, and then, just now, I ruined a second plot point by googling to find the image to use above.  Bloody ‘ell!

3.  The Best Free Apps for Kids by commonsensemedia.org:  We needed some entertainment between the time spent at doctor’s offices, hospital rooms and couches in the month of January.  You can bet I downloaded every app on the list.

My personal favorite is Tiny Piano.  Because you haven’t lived until you’ve heard your child play “Party Rock Anthem” on a baby grand.

4.  Kid-Sized Jamba Juices:  Hallelujah!  My kiddos don’t need 32 oz. of any beverage at any time.  Ever.  And I was tired of the brawls over which flavor to split.

Berry Beet It

9.5 ounces of all-fruit, no-added-sugar, some even have kale (!), and totally personalized deliciousness.  Problem solved.

5.  Our Old Favorite Recipes:  I love to cook good recipes, and sometimes, they’re even mine.  This past week I’ve made Roasted Chickpea Tacos, Apple Cinnamon Pancakes, Mango Cupcakes with Coconut Chocolate Ganache and Healthier Homemade Pop Tarts that I cut into circles and dusted with cinnamon and sugar and called hand pies.

pies

Yes, I did.

6.  She Reads Truth:  Right now, I’m writing for the next plan and it’s been pretty danged convicting.  God’s word on thankfulness?  Got it.  His wisdom regarding unity?  Brilliant.  Applying His word regarding peace?  Shoot, that’s hard.

I’m working on it.

Join, if you like, we’re currently finishing our first week of the Soul Detox plan.  And it’s the only detox I’m doing right now.  Obviously.

7. Chamomile Tea:  I’m securing my position as a senior citizen with this one, but it has me sleeping like a grandpa in an easy chair.  Zzzzzzzzz……

tea

Yesterday, my mom and I were discussing how knockered we got on Friday night–from our personal stashes of chamomile tea.  And then we sent each other home with little baggies we swapped of our favorite varieties.  Oh dear.

8.  Stalking Celebrity Chefs on Twitter:  (SPOILER ALERT…if you are behind on Top Chef Seattle, stop reading here!)  After last week’s Top Chef episode, in which her very favorite cheftestant was eliminated, Lulu lost it.  I mean big time.  Pouting. Sobbing.  Wishing bad, bad things upon Tom Colicchio.  So I did what any social media connected mom would do and Tweeted the beautiful, talented and prematurely eliminated Kristen on her behalf.

Which then turned into a full blown conversation.

Any Bostontonians want to put us up?

I’ll make pizza.  And brownies.  And pie.  Then I’ll drink my tea and go to bed at 6.

Think about it.

  1. Picky Nicky says:

Mini poptarts sound so good :)

  2. Jane T. says:

We’re in Boston! And she’s our favorite too. Come on over :)

  3. I love me some Downton Abbey! Funny side note — for the first few weeks I watched it I kept calling it DownTOWN Abbey, and even wrote a post about how much I loved it while spelling it wrong the entire time. Apparently I didn’t love it enough to actually know its name!

  4. That’s my favorite tea. Ever!

I missed this series of Top Chef. But with everyone raving about it, I might have to get caught up. Love that show in general.

  5. I had no idea there was vanilla Chamomile tea! I can’t wait for tomorrow to come so I can go find me some.

  6. elise says:

32 ounces?!? theres always been a 16 ounce option here in ca! 9.5 does seem good for kids though. and w kale!! yes!

  7. Amy says:

We are about 40 minutes outside of Boston; you are welcome anytime :) Hope your family is happy and healthy at the moment!

  8. Are adults allowed to order the kid-sized option? That sounds perfect for me! :)

  9. Shelley says:

Such unfairness that Kristen was eliminated! Shocking really. Total unfairness. I could go on and on!

  10. Come I’m on the wrong coast! Come to Oregon and make pizza. And brownies. And Pie! Oh, and then we can keep watching Downton Abbey! Im obsessed!

  11. Oh, I’ve made those brownies – They are out of this world!

I’ve never watched Downtown Abbey, but I feel like it is a train I should hop on.

  12. Louise says:

When are you coming to Boston? For how long? I have a free bedroom since 1 daughter has gone to college! Louise

  13. Ashlee says:

I’m right there with Lulu on being upset about Kristen getting kicked off; she could have won it all! I’m a little behind on the Soul Detox but loving it so much!

  14. Lisa says:

You just made me the coolest mommy in the world because I am making those brownies this week! :)

  15. I have made those brownies…..amaaaaazzzzzingggg!! I want to try your homemade poptarts!

  16. Jessica says:

I did the EXACT same thing with PW and Downton Abbey – I was so upset! I just got on board and am plowing through Season 1. It’s so good!

Those brownies look amazing. Checking my pantry!

  17. Heidi says:

I was so heartbroken after Top Chef last week. And you’re tweeting with Kristen! That’s fantastic. She has fans down here in the south too! Hubby & I were none too pleased. Have you watched Last Chance yet? I never watch.. I just see who is competing the following week.

  18. Christine says:

The pizza and brownies look amazing. And those pop tarts, I made them once and they were TOO good to have around the house on a regular basis. :-) But I think it has been a year since I made them so maybe time to make them again. I finally made your Spicy African Peanut Stew last night – had a cold all weekend and it tasted SOOOOO GOOOD!!!! Ate the entire batch!

Downton Abbey – I watched it on my treadmill too but am still waiting for Netflix to stream Season 2. I might have to just break down and rent it because I’m starting to see some spoilers too. Might have to re-watch Season 1 since it has been so long.

Lulu – that is so sweet…and funny! She is so invested in that show…ha ha ha ha!!!!

  19. Love your site, your love for The Lord, your healthy approach to food and you are catching up with Downton Abbey. I led a reasonably quiet life until I watched Downton Abbey with Lord D, my husband. God had a humble calling for me. I had just finished helping a church friend edit his book about his testimony titled Finding my Father and that was to spark to fuel my desire to write. I love to cook healthy food, have a degree in history, so I began writing about the food of the post edwardian era at http://www.downtonabbey.com. My recipe index http://ow.ly/1Rzh9M. God has blessed me with a gift with a talent for connecting with people somehow and a following. Penguin publishing approached me to write a book, but ended up self-publishing Abbey Cooks Entertain. You know how much fun writing a cookbook can be, but I felt God’s hand on my shoulder each time I hit a roadblock. As the spiritual leader in our family my husband ministers to other men, and in my small way I minister to home cooks, using the popularity of Fownton to lure people into the kitchen to cook for health and pleasure not convenience.
Bless you in your own ministry to mothers everywhere.

  20. I just bought a box of the celestial teas, they are so good!

  21. Aurora says:

Speaking of brownies a friend of mine sent me a link to some brownies that she had found on another blog…although she is a faithful reader of yours and loves your recipes. I don’t know if this is one that you have tried yet but I figured since they are wonderful and they have oatmeal so I am eating them for breakfast I would share the link with you.
    Enjoy!

  22. Jacquelynn says:

I was just going to start Downton Abbey too, now that I have seen every episode of Parenthood. Parenthood is sooooooo good, and I cannot wait until the new season. Does the new season start in the fall, or do they do an earlier start????

  23. gail says:

well…jessica wins my award for best name for a recipe…”better-than-crack-brownies” is too funny.

we don’t have cable so we stick the rabbit ears on our unused flatscreen every sunday night at 9 and the 5 of us watch Downton Abbey, it’s like an event, and we all laugh at how old school it is…no commercials, no bathroom breaks, you have to have ALL your snacks, blankets, etc., cuz there’s no leavin’ and there’s no interruptin’…

i got chastised last night for interrupting the first full minute and a half as a vitamixed my lemon/lime/orange/coconut water icee! i got 4 sets of “evil eyes”—that’s 8 angry eyeballs on me—and i had to promise it wouldn’t happen again! but they all loved and hugged me hard after an especially emotional/tearful/moving episode…all’s well that ends well…

  24. Kim says:

Loved the brownies. Love Downton. Love Jamba. Love your mini pies (Happy Birthday to Jed…or me?) LOVE SRT! Not a tea fan, but we can agree to disagree on a couple things, I suppose. ;)

  25. Christine says:

Love the “Crazy Series’, especially the Maui edition. Star Noodle was on my list when we went in 2011 and I’m so bummed we didn’t make it….next time! Enjoy reading your blog!

  26. um you can send me some of those brownies :)

my older sister and mom love that show!! I have seen a few, and can feel me getting hooked

  27. Amber K says:

Ooh I love the cute kid-sized Jamba juices! Looks perfect for those small cravings.

  28. Katie says:

Downton Abby. Yup. Just watched Season 1 and then turned on the TV and accidentally saw a spoiler, too! Darn it.

Also, I love knowing that you are behind my She Read’s Truth devotionals in the morning.

  29. I wish Indiana had Jamba Juices! I love the idea of kid sizes. And I am new to ‘She Reads Truth’ this year and did the Fresh Start plan and am following along for the Soul Detox. So far I am really liking it!

  30. Jessica says:

I am going to wait about 2 more years to watch Downtown Abbey because I am approximately 4 years behind in my entertainment choices and wouldn’t want to change that now…:)

And SheReadsTruth…it is just exactly what I need in my life.

  31. I’m late to the Downton Abbey thing too – just finished the 2nd season last week, it’s great treadmill entertainment. Or cooking entertainment. Okay anytime. And I was ticked when someone spoiled a plot-point for me a few weeks ago too – don’t ever post things like that on the internet, right? ;)

  32. Amber says:

    Hi Mamma Pea,

I am slowly changing my family over to vegetarianism/ a vegan lifestyle. I would love some tips on trying to convince 2 kids and a husband. My husband is a hard working contractor and is worried that he will be hungry all the time. Thank you for all you do!!!! Your blog is inspiring and you always give me a good belly laugh.

    Thanks, Amber

  33. Marianne says:

I must find that tea. I love chamomile, and obviously a honey vanilla version would be even that much better.

  34. Sarah says:

I love Kristen and I’m with Lulu!! Those judges are not so smart sometimes.

  35. Erika says:

Omg I was WAYYY late to the Downton Abbey party but I love it!!! As I do Jessica’s better-than-crack brownies. I’m a believer that they are the reason why I gained 10 lbs my senior year of college. Whoops. Loving your blog!
