Ginger Berry Green Lemonade
This isn’t a “diet” drink.
This is a “I just spent nine days on holiday after the holidays” drink.
This is a “six hours on a plane and they pumped shortbread cookies and pineapple orange guava juice in me like they were life-saving antidotes” drink.
This is a “the island I was on ran out of lettuce (!) and broccoli was $6.99 a pound” drink.
And a “remember the time we ate 8 pies in 36 hours?” drink.
(I’d say I’m not proud, but I kind of am.)
However, if that doesn’t call for a big swig of vegetables in a glass, I don’t know what does.
I wouldn’t call this a meal…simply a greenage consumption enhancing beverage.
Heck, drink it with pie if you want.
Ginger Berry Green Lemonade
Makes 1 large pitcher (approx. 4 servings)

I like to make a batch and then keep it in a large, covered glass jar in the fridge and pour myself several glasses throughout the day. It will keep for several days. Feel free to substitute any fruits you like. Apples, pears and bananas are also nice, but you’ll want to freeze them in advance if you prefer a “slushy” texture.
- 3-4 c. cold filtered water
- 1 head romaine lettuce
- 4 stalks celery
- 4 c. spinach
- 1 lemon, juiced
- 1-2 inch piece of ginger, peeled
- 2 c. frozen strawberries
- stevia to taste (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Chill until serving.

I love POG . . . in moderation
Yes, it’s definitely a “sometimes” food.
Hehe I bet this left your insides smiling Mama Pea! Whenever I’m away from home, no matter where I go, I always look forward to coming back to my own kitchen and stuffing my Vitamix with veggies. Glad you got back safely. Have fun loading up on green things this week!
Thanks, Angela. It’s been nice to get back in my kitchen!
And it’s not even St. Patty’s day yet!
I think we can all use a little more green drinks in our life this time of year. Thanks for helping us find our balance!
I know I’m not the only one who’s been hitting the pie hard.
Welcome home, Lovely.
Thanks, friend.
Okay- clearly this is super healthy. But I’m a little scared. Is it an acquired taste? Will I have to hold my nose? Or, is it actually something you’d consider tasty? I don’t mean any offense because heaven knows I could use a big ol’ glass of veggies…I’m just trying to gather if this is something you drink because it is both healthy and tastes good, or just because it’s healthy and it’s not totally awful?
Headed to Maui in February so I should probably do some preemptive damage control for the next 6 weeks.
Personally, I love it! The ginger and lemon really cover the green taste, and obviously you can make it as sweet as you want. Play with the fruits you use, and I bet you can find a combo you enjoy.
Looks delicious! As much as I love kale, sometimes I want something a little milder. And look at all that protein in there! I’ve noticed that sometimes red berries and leafy greens turn a luscious shade of greenish-brown sometimes!
Should I take this as a hint? I somehow feel like this post was meant for me.
Oh no, it’s all me, girl.
Yum. Looks very good. Going to give it a try tomorrow. My family and I spent Thanksgiving in Hawaii this past year and I will admit I went way too overboard on the POG juice. I even searched high and low to find it here in Atlanta. Nope, nowhere to be found, which is a good thing right?! Green juice on the other hand I can make here. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure. I think they have more POG than water in Hawaii.
Hi Mama Pea! I love Leoda’s, and I’ll definitely have to try this drink! I wanted to suggest a post for you– tips on travel with young children. My husband and I have gone to Maui twice on our own, but now that we’re expecting our first little one any day AND we already have the Hawaii itch again, I know we’ll have to do it once while our kids are young. In fact, we’re so crazy, we’re already planning a big family trip in five years for my 30th birthday! I would love to hear your thoughts on traveling with the girls!!
I’m planning on doing a recap post this week, so I’ll try to throw in some tips. Feel free to email me too!
We are blessed to enjoy Maui twice a year and I’ve ran past Leoda’s and drive by all the time but never stopped. Thinking the Mister may have missed out.
Yolanda, it’s to DIE for. Seriously, I have dreams about it. I hope you get a chance to return (and me too)!
Ok, that does it, in Feb/March we will check it out. I don’t do processed sugars, but the Mister does.
when you were there this last trip did you check out Maui Choice? I love that place!!!!
I love green smoothies and protein smoothies and its what my body hs been craving this week.
Oh me too, Tami. Better feed the craving while it lasts!
I SO WISH I’D READ THIS PRE-SHOPPING TRIP TONIGHT! Guess I’ll be going back – I love that it keeps in the fridge well. Makes my life so much easier.
And I should have asked you to bring back a pallet of POG juice. I would have given it to Nate for our anniversary and would have won Wife of the Decade.
I guess we’ll just have to wait for our dual Hawaii trip
Oh yes. And I’ll even give Nate my share of POG.
Sounds about perfect after 3 weeks of Hoiday Hooplah! Fun but my body wants some good stuff for the next year!
Yes, ma’am. Your hoopla was just 3 weeks? Well done!
I just made this now and it’s DIVINE.
Thank you.
I’m so glad you post as often as you do, and for your candor, honesty and love.
You are such an inspiration to me, in more ways than you will EVER know (finding my love for Jesus and opening my heart), to making me think of my life and decisions and how to work through the hard times.
And I thank you. Thank you so much for it.
Your recipes and food are filled with love and kindness, you posts are full of inspiration and hope.
All my love!
What a gift this sweet comment is, Lola. I can’t thank you enough.
It’s like you can read my mind! I got the Breville hemisphere for Christmas and have been in search of a yummy high nutrient “juice” filled with greens. I literally just told @healthyhitsthespot that I would work on a juice recipe to share with her to see if my Breville really does rival the oh so expensive VitaMix! This post came at the perfect time! I can’t wait to make this to see how it works!! Thank you Sarah!!!
Hope you like it!
I always feel like swigging vegetables right after the holidays…too bad that feeling has already passed.
I may just do it anyway.
That looks so good. The fact that green sludge looks appealing tells me I’ve been eating way too much sugar (and fries and chicken fingers and other goodness that I don’t regret at all). Will make tonight! Does the celery get smooth in a regular blender, or do you need a fancy vitamix?
PS: I’m on my second book from your list of books that wrecked you, and I am feeling very convicted by both! Thank you for sharing, and if you wanted to do a part 2 of that post sometime, I’d personally love to read it!
I think you have the best luck in a vitamix but I’ve made it in an Oster too. I’m glad you are enjoying the books. I read several on vacation so maybe it is almost time for a part two…
I just made this and it’s AWESOME!! Very tasty! I made mine in the Breville Hemisphere and it pulverized everything perfectly!
I’ll be making this for years to come!
Such a great recipe. I’ll be making this soon for sure!
A great way to get in lots of veggies. And I need the ginger for digestion. Pinned for later!
I’m glad that you posted this recipe because now I finally have a good way to use lettuce in smoothie-esque beverages! We often wind up with leftover romaine hearts because we usually eat spinach salads and I’ve tried to utilize it in beverages to no avail. I threw some lettuce into smoothies over the summer with a few other things and the result was nearly undrinkable. This looks MUCH better!
Hmmm….seems off in my version. I didnt have strawberries so I went with mixed berries instead (rasp, blueberries and blackberries) and all I can taste is the romaine. LOL. Its not bad…its just different…I’m drinking it down tho! Bottoms up!
MMMM, loving the sounds (and looks) of this green drink!! I’ve recently gotten hooked on cucumber in my smoothies, I’d never thought of celery. Such a fresh taste! I had been drinking green juices in the morning for so long I had forgotten about smoothies… until our last trip to Maui! Our favorite spot was Joy’s Place in Kihei, the best green smoothies ever, and the woman who worked there was so welcoming and friendly! *sigh*, amidst all of our snow today, I really miss Maui! Welcome back {hugs}
PS I am SO happy to hear you are a part of She Reads Truth! It has been an absolute blessing to read this new series, you were so right. I’m VERY sad to have missed the giveaway of the journal (mine’s almost full!), I think I may jsut have to order one… or two
My husband and I juice a lot, but this smoothy looks yummy. The combination of green veggies and berries I bet adds an interesting value to the taste. Do you use the sugar supplement when you make yours? I feel like the holidays did me in as well and I really need to not only get myself on track but my entire family. Although, I am not sure I would be able to get my kids to drink it!
I do add stevia to mine, but if you prefer to just use more/sweeter fruit or even something like honey or agave, you could.
I love your sense of humor! Just found your blog, and I couldn’t be more excited for a drink like this after the holidays! Thanks for a health-focused perspective that’s light and fun too!
Thanks, Ally! Nice to “meet” you!
Delicious! I made a similar green drink the other day and it was so refreshing! I have been making green smoothies for years but this is a lighter, fresher version of a heavy smoothie. Perfect!
I made this drink a few days ago…Pretty good but VERY tart so matter how many packets of stevia I put in it! Maybe it was the lemons I bought…lol! But you definitely do NOT notice the greens and the fact you can store it in the fridge to have on the go in the mornings is a HUGE bonus! I will definitely play with the fruits in this and see where it takes me. Thanks for sharing the recipe and getting my family started on a good habit
