Snapshot Sunday: Warm, Heavenly Blankets

I don’t know what made me think of it.

Maybe it was Lulu shivering from the bath, her stringy wet hair soaking into the shirt of her fuzzy pink hippo pajamas.

Maybe it was Gigi in her long underwear from last winter, her having grown so big that the ankles of the snug bottoms were hitting her mid-calf.

Maybe it was the memory of bringing them both into this world. Holding them close. Loving them recklessly from their damp heads to their tiny, perfect ankles.

While a nurse covered us with a warm, heavenly blanket.

I’m never going to be the perfect mom.

There’ll be days when I lose my mind over the full carton of orange juice you knocked out of the refrigerator when we had to be at school five minutes ago or when I grow weary from picking up the hundreds of tiny pieces of white paper you left littering the living room, the carpet and in between the couch cushions, as you fashioned snowflakes out of the last of our coffee filters.

But no matter what you do, no matter how many mistakes I make, I’ll always love you recklessly.

And every night, when we read stories and say our prayers, I’ll take those extra three minutes to stick your blankie in the dryer.

And cover you with a glimpse of heaven.

Our hearts are heavy for those affected by Hurricane Sandy, those in desperate need of a glimpse of heaven.  Join me in lifting them up in prayer and deed.  You can donate to the relief efforts by giving to the Red Cross here.

Snapshot Sundays are my attempt to recapture Sundays as a day of rest.  Feel free to participate (read more here)…or just rest.

There is no perfect mom…but God blessed you with your specific kids for a reason. And I’m pretty sure the kids he gave you are in love with warm cozy blankets and a mom who snuggles in with them. I don’t believe in perfect but DO believe in perfect moments. Warm blankets are like sitting in a cup of hot chocolate :) . Or better yet nutella hot chocolate! ( warm milk on stove and whisk nutella in…dreamy)

  2. Such a beautiful post. Too cute that you warm their blankets!

These are the (super-cozy) memories (warmed-up blankies!) that will last forever. In turn, Lulu & Gigi will pass the tradition to their children some day. Then YOU will be a grammie Sara!

  3. Anne says:

What a beautiful post and thanks for remembering the East coast with a request for donations. I’m in Pennsylvania and have had no damage from the storm, but I’m one of the lucky ones because all around this area people have had property damage and loss of power and heat. It’s even worse to the east of us in NY and NJ. Wish everyone could be tucked into bed with a warm and cozy blanket. Hopefully those days will be here soon!

We’re still giving the kids in our lives presents for Christmas, but for the adults we’re making one large donation to the Red Cross. Since most of them live back East or have in-laws there, we thought that would be more fitting that buying another scarf or sending another gift card.

  5. Alison says:

I am totally going to do this for my girls, thank you for the idea! And another thank you for the reminder that I’m not the only imperfect mother out there. Phew!

  6. Very sweet post and what a neat idea to warm your kiddos’ blankets. I might just have to steal this wonderful gesture!

  7. Emily says:

So well said. Thank you for such beautiful words.

  8. Megan says:

Just beautiful. Those two are lucky to have you as their mom! I am definitely using the warm blanket idea for my future little ones :)

This may have already been answered before, but are the archives from before 2012 intentionally removed?

  10. Beautiful post Mama Pea. All of the posts I’ve been reading here and on other blogs about the effects of Hurricane Sandy have made me truly grateful for my life, safety, and the safety of my friends and family. PS. I was more of a teddy girl growing up, but my sister had a blankie and my mum always did the 3-mins-in-the-dryer trick!

  11. Martha says:

Too sweet! Do you still do the Treat Fairy? I’ve been waay overdoing it with the Halloween candy :) .

    • MamaPea says:

We don’t do the Treat Fairy right now, but that’s not to say she won’t make a future appearance. The girls have been really responsible with their candy and they are each choosing one piece to savor each day. Another really spectacular idea, though, is to send excess candy in care packages to the troops!

  12. Your Sunday looks so cozy! I love just chillin out in blankets – especially at this time of year (chillin out would be the wrong term here – I guess warmin up??)

I havnt commented in a while life has been extra busy, but I always come here and read your posts even if it’s a couple of days later. Just need to tell you I have tears in my eyes again:) we can never be a perfect mum but you certainly make me take a moment and see what a lucky mum I am. Bless you MP and your beautiful family :)
