Let’s Doodle Lunch! (GIVEAWAY)

IMG_9531

School is almost out for summer.

Gigi has a few more weeks and Lulu only has a few more days.

I’ve been looking forward to summer:  no lunches to pack, no homework to do, no praying to dear God that nothing forces me out of my car when I do the morning drop off in boxer shorts, crazy lady hair and bare feet.  So far so good.

Then, just when summer can’t get here fast enough, we have a day like today when I foolishly take Lulu bra shopping.

Holy smokes.

Drawers were opening left and right and 32 As through 46 Fs in pink leopard print, electric blue rhinestones and neon green lace were flying.

I’m pretty sure that saleslady never wants to have children now, and not because of my depressing cup size after having breastfed two kids.

(Goodbye, male readers.  Like my once ample bosom, It was nice having you around while you lasted.)

It was the perfect afternoon to give the girls an activity and to give you a giveaway.

I almost always make my own bread for lunches, but I also always keep a store-bought loaf in the freezer for emergencies.  Rudi’s Organic Bakery is one of the few brands that I feel really good about buying.  They use all organic, non-GMO ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup or trans fat.  They’ve also recently developed a gluten-free line as well that I’ve yet to track down but I’m excited to try.

Rudi’s is currently holding a Facebook promotion that is near and dear to my heart called “Let’s Doodle Lunch.”

2012-05-15_14282012-05-15_1427

Through the promotion, parents can join the Rudi’s Facebook community, upload their kid’s artwork, and get a FREE sandwich box with that art on top of the lid from now until June 30th.

The idea is to encourage healthy creativity, both on the sandwich box and inside.

The girls were totally into the idea of leaving their permanent mark on, well, anything that they can.

The true sign of razor-sharp focus is the sticking out of one’s tongue.

IMG_9527-2

The true sign of pickle obsession is a pickle bandaid.  On an imaginary injury.

Once their designs, along with those done by other kiddos, are submitted, Rudi’s Facebook fans will have the chance to vote on their favorite design.  For each vote cast, Rudi’s will donate a $1 to The Lunch Box Project, a non-profit that is devoted to empowering schools to serve nutritious, whole foods to all students.

And to help you and your kids get started, Rudi’s is offering a really fun package to one lucky P&TY reader.

  41. wendy says:

This is fabulous! My daughter is a fan of cream cheese and jelly sandwiches, the idea being that you lick the fillings and leave the (homemade and slaved over) bread. My son is a straight up pb and j man, bread included. I’d like to add mine, but I usually just end up scarfing the crusts and soggy, licked bread and calling it lunch. And I had idea we had the same fashion sense, at least in the car in morning…

Nursing 2 I’ve gone far the other way. So you’re all saying that I’ll go back to being heckled by salespersons after I’m done nursing? Not good news!

    I love Rudi’s bread, too!
Right now, our favorite sandwich is almond butter, or peanut butter, and Ricemellow cream.
If you have not enjoyed Ricemellow before, It’s like fluff, but made with brown rice syrup. It’s addicting. I even use it as icing on carrot cake cupcakes.

  93. Heather says:

hm…. I go through weird sandwich phases… I have a strange bread diversion unless it is Rudi’s or California brand bread. What I love is sprouted wheat bread with almond butter, coconut flakes, a banana and dark chocolate chips! :) Sometimes I put jelly on there too!

We crumble tempeh, add raisins, apples, vegan mayo, mustard, and other fixins, mix it up, and eat it on crackers, toast, or on sandwiches with loads upon loads of pickles, spinach and tomatoes. It’s hearty, healthy, and filling!

  103. Ellie says:

Favorite sandwich is the classic: peanut butter and jelly on wheat bread, sometimes with some cinnamon on top. I also like to use frozen berries in place of jelly, it does get all soggy by lunch, but it’s still good!

  104. Crysta says:

Well honestly I haven’t really packed a sandwich in a while (daughter is gluten free) but before the madness I loooooooved avocado, sprouts, tomatoes and cucumbers with chipotle vegenaise on 100% whole wheat bread. 114. TracyP says:

It may sound strange but I love a sandwich of hummus, avocado, tomato, lettuce and sprouts.

  115. Lou says:

Favourite sandwich combo would have to be Vegemite and alfalfa sprouts ( I AM an Aussie, so forgive me for the Vegemite!) I always had this in my school lunches :)

  116. How fun! I swear I’ve seen some Rudi’s Gluten-Free stuff in the Portland area (in the freezers). In fact, until this post I thought they only made gluten free! Will have to look for the regular.

Fave sandwich? Tomatoes, cucumbers, avocado, sprouts, cream cheese, and swiss cheese on a really grainy/seedy bread. Nom!

  117. Kiran says:

My all time favorite sandwich is one I’ve been eating since high school. Whole wheat bread, jack cheese, cucumber, sprouts and lots of mayo. So yum! My kids aren’t big sandwich people. Maybe if they have their own sandwich box to put it in they will change their minds. Packaging can do a lot!

  118. Genevieve says:

Apples, cheese and honey on toasted whole grain bread. Simply the best!

  119. Elna Clark says:

Here is my favorite sandwich. Roasted yams (in circles and not squashed), with Daiya pepperjack cheese – make like a grilled cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread. When toasted – add avocado. It is the BEST!!!

  121. Ashley says:

This probably sounds disgusting but peanut butter and butter are my favorite sandwich combo. My dad would always make my sister and I these roll-up sandwiches. They tasted so amazing. When I need a little comfort now, I make this with almond butter and Earth Balance. Yum!

If I’m making it: Avocado, tomato, hummus, & basil. If someone else is making it: a tofu bahn mi!

I wish my 2 year old could draw something sandwich container-worthy. Although I guess who cares if it’s worthy – I’ll upload something anyway! Great contest.

  123. Roberta says:

My favorite sandwich has always been Peanut Butter and Pickle on toasted whole wheat! I’m guessing that’s one of Lulu’s favorites too, right?

  124. Lara says:

I’m on an almond butter and honey kick right now :)

  125. Briana says:

    Almond butter with sliced strawberries!

  127. Wendy B. says:

You can’t go wrong with good old peanut butter and honey.

  128. Chez says:

What a cool promotion!! There’s an amazing sandwich at a place here in Austin – grilled tofu, grilled veggies, and basil vegenaise. I love it, and it would be easy enough to make at home, but grilling vegetables always seems like too much effort for “just a sandwich,” even when the sandwich is this amazing!

  129. That is so cool. Now how do I get my four year old to be more artistic?? I have not one worthy art project to submit. I would try to do it for her but honestly she gets the lack of artistic-ness from ME.

  130. Nicole says:

    the baret makes me laugh!!!

also, saw this & thought of you! (which makes me feel part-blog-stalker. but don’t worry, i live to far away to be do any harm! :P )

    http://imgfave.com/view/1960664

  131. Rudi’s is also a favourite brand, when I don’t make my own breads! Now, I can’t choose just one favourite sandwich, so my two favourites are almond butter with blueberry jam and peanut butter, banana, and honey. Both on whole wheat. :)

  132. For a minute there I thought you were taking Lulu shopping for bras for her. I was quite confused.

  133. Cary says:

Hmmm, my hubby makes the best peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (strawberry freezer jam of course!) They often get me through the first trimester when nothing else sounds good :)

  134. Sarah L says:

I love roasted veggie sandwiches. Spicy mustard on any sandwich is a good thing, too!

  135. Shannon says:

Love this! My favorite that I had daily at work for many years, causing coworkers to say “Tofu. Again. ” is complete sprouted protein bread with yellow mustard, teriyaki baked tofu and fresh spinach. Mmmm mmm. On a good day throw some avo on there, perhaps sprouts or tomato. Pickles if you are lucky and olive tapenade if you are just plain indulgent.

    Rye bread – grilled……reuben

  144. marie says:

It’s a tie amongst almond butter & fresh figs; egg salad made with boiled egg & hummus; and Moosewood’s black bean burgers. I use Peter Reinhart’s Oat Bran Broom bread, made into buns, for all of these.

To this on some great toasted whole grain bread, add some lucious tomatoes in season only, some romaine lettuce or some spinach, and top if off with4 or 5 slices of wax peppers (we can our own) but Bruno’s makes a fairly good wax pepper in a pinch. What a great sandwich. The leftovers keep well in refrig. and are wonderful on crackers as a spread. Oh…I always add a dash or so or Cholula or Siracha hot sauce to my spread before I put the sandwich top on. I think I will have to make this sandwich this weekend.

That looks just like the art set I got when I was a child when we visited FAO schwarz…

Lots of avocados sandwiches, but here’s another one! I like a hearty multi-grain bread, toasted + half a sliced avocado + a sprinkle of freshly shredded parm cheese + a huge dollop of alfalfa sprouts + a healthy spoon of italian dressing (or balsamic & vinegar).

Oooh, this would be perfect for my girls! My daughter’s favorite sandwich is “squished-up cheese” (i.e. grilled cheese) and mine is hummus, sprouts, avocado, tomatoes, cheese, grated carrots and thinly sliced cucumber. My local organic food store sells a sandwich similar to this that is my inspiration, and I make it often at home!
