Banana Splits on a Stick

IMG_9477

It’s hot!

We’ve had record temps here in the Pacific Northwest for the last week.

You aren’t getting any complaints from me, though.

I dig walking to the gym instead of circling the parking lot in the rain for the closest spot to the door.  You know you do it too.

I dig pouring Pea Daddy the tiniest cup of coffee in the morning and the putting the rest in a jar in the fridge for a mid-afternoon iced coffee.  I need it more than he does.

I dig tank tops and exercising my right to bare arms.

I dig that The Bachelorette starts tonight and I’m over my self-imposed ban on trashy reality TV. (That has nothing to do with the heat or anything else relevant to this post, but is intended to inform Pea Daddy of my absolute control of  the TV between 9:30 and 11 p.m. tonight.)

You know what else I dig?

Eating banana splits for breakfast.

And I totally dig anything on a stick.

Banana Splits on a Stick

Inspired by this Pinterest find

Makes 6 pops

Print this recipe!

  • 3 large bananas, cut in half
  • 6 popsicle or lollipop sticks
  • One 6 oz. container strawberry Greek yogurt*
  • 1/4 c. chopped nuts
  • 1/3 c. chocolate chips or chunks

*For a dairy-free option, try So Delicious Coconut Strawberry Greek Yogurt.  For an extra protein boost, stir in a tablespoon or so of your favorite vanilla protein powder.

Insert a stick in the center base of each banana half.

Using a mini-spatula or pastry brush, paint on yogurt.  Sprinkle on nuts and chocolate chunks or chips.

Transfer banana pops to a plate that has been lined with waxed paper and place plate in the freezer for 45 minutes or longer.

We love goodies like these that I can always say “yes” to.

Afterschool snack? Sure.

Dessert?  Help yourself.

Breakfast?  Don’t mind if I do.

IMG_9499

And if you happen to be challenged in the front teeth department, there’s an easy solution for that.

IMG_9504

Just slice, top and pop ‘em straight in.

If you got a problem, yo, I’ll solve it.

But not until after breakfast.

  1. Love this! I love making simple treats with bananas! One of my faves is banana sliced, rolled in cocoa powder, and topped with shredded coconut! It is DELICIOUS and so simple! Sweet and rich all in one bite!

  2. Julie Hasson says:

Love this idea Sarah! What a great breakfast on the run, or for sustenance before I go to the gym. And yes, I too try to get that spot right next to the door; )

  3. Ashley says:

I could use one of these after a hot 4 mile walk with the dogs!

  4. What an awesome and fun recipe!!

And I totally dig your cookbook :) It came in the mail today and I’m beyond excited about it!

  5. Emma says:

Yum! But seriously, am I the only one who’s mind is in the gutter with those photos?

  6. OMG STOP. you slay me.

    nanner nanner.

  7. Ali says:

Bachelorette!! totally forgot – you saved me!!

  8. Amber K says:

I am done with feeling overheated, but I am not jonesing for the rain to come back either. So I’ll just have some frozen banana pops and continue freezing wet washcloths to drape on my head.

  9. Easy and fun and perfect for summer! I need to do this. And add plenty of chocolate chips :)

  10. Love this idea! These are so cute – I’m betting they’ll be huge hit with my daughter just because they’re pink, haha. But really I think I need to make these just for myself, they look so good right now after just coming inside!

  11. This is brilliant! Just gotta find some sticks! Maybe raid the sushi station at the grocery store.

  12. Margarita says:

I often just run or walk to the gym myself or ride my bike if I’m feeling lazy. Eastern WA is pretty sunny all the time though so we’re lucky for this little luxury… When I was in Portland, I never knew what to expect when I walk out the door. To bring an umbrella or not (so unPortland), to wear a raincoat or not… I love these banana splits! What a clever and delicious idea to turn a pretty standard breakfast/snack into something special and summer perfect.

  13. So glad I just checked your blog before leaving for Whole Foods. I will be making these tonight! I had never heard of dairy free Greek yogurt….so THANK YOU for letting us know!

  14. Lauren says:

These are too cute! What a fantastic snack for kids and adults.

  15. hippierunner says:

How funny- I saw a similar recipe while reading ‘The Care Bear Party Cookbook’ today (the little girl I was babysitting insisted I read this cookbook from the 80s aloud!). Ever since then I had been planning to make my own ‘Banana Pops’. Thanks to your post I will remember to use wax paper! :)

  16. These are so cute Mama Pea! I saw a similar version to the one you pinned on Pinterest as well, but yours look so much better. I bet the girls loved them!

  17. These look so fun! My favorite carnival treat was always “monkey tails” (frozen bananas dipped in chocolate and crunch coat) I love this healthy option.

  18. love the vanilla ice reference ;)

these sound awesome! i don’t always love bananas but if they’re cold i can totally change my tune!

  19. Kelly says:

Oh yum! I used to make a much more unhealthy version with my Grandma. My kids would love these! :)

  20. Keri R. says:

    1. This looks really yummy

    2. This makes me want to cover homemade fudgesicles with strawberry yogurt, nuts, and chocolate!

  21. glidingcalm says:

    niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  22. I had somehow missed that the bachelorette started tonight. Thank GOODNESS I was on Facebook 30 minutes before it started and saw people posting. Let me tell you, my boyfriend was just as excited as I was (and by that, I totally mean not excited at all).

Egg man? Glass slipper dude? Helicopter fellow???? REALLY?!?!?!?!

  23. Jamie says:

I absolutely cannot wait to try these! I love bananas, and chocolate, and greek yogurt. Just looking at them makes me in love, thank you SO much for sharing this!

  24. Ali says:

    Love it! So so cute!

  25. I never thought I’d refer to a banana as “cute,” but I think those are totally cute!!! Especially to serve at a fun party!

  26. STUFT Mama says:

Now I have that Vanilla Ice song in my head. Thanks. :) Oh and closest spot at the gym- you’re funny. Bachelorette- is it sad I look forward to Monday nights for those trashy shows?

  27. Love it! The nephews will definitely go for those, what a great idea.

Your circling the parking lot in the rain cracked me up. There’s many Thai places within walking distance to my bf’s house in NW, but when it’s raining we go to the one that may not be our favorite but is only a block and a half away. If the sun’s here to say we can go to the more delicious, ten block away one more, yay!

  28. Marion says:

Ooooooooh yuuum! Dessert. Sorted. I have my fav coconut milk yoghurt in the fridge begging to be smeared all over a banana or two:) thank you once again for a brilliant recipe!

  29. I would say the sticks are super cute but there is something just wrong with that. I really just think it is the pink. I love the idea though and would eat up those slices in an instant. Did the girls love them?

  30. Lindsay says:

haha I’m assuming the little bite size ones are for Gigi! So cute :)
P.S. What did you think of the Bachelorette?!

    • MamaPea says:

I think Emily is lovely, but girlfriend doesn’t seem to have much of a personality, so it is astonishing to see these guys (who frankly, I was NOT impressed with…except I like Jef and the guy with the head injury) falling all over her. Other than the grandma act and the stripper entrance, I was bored out of my gourd.

  31. I’m relishing in the rain today instead of heat – can you tell we live in opposite climates? :} (I’m in San Antonio, TX).

I actually don’t have any bananas right now, which pretty much never happens. I usually have half a produce section worth at all times. Guess who is heading to the store today? In the rain?

  32. Christine says:

This looks so delicious…I didn’t get breakfast this morning so the pictures are totally killing me! Yummy! And those little banana slices for Gigi…you are so sweet! That just melted my heart! :-)

I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day – the post was beautiful! Enjoy your hot weather – we have all your rain…thanks! :-)

  33. These look insanely delicious and simple. I think my husband would have 4 at a time though.

  34. Lydia says:

    These look delicious!

Even though you’re not strictly vegan anymore for health reasons (which I respect – your health comes first!), I really hope that you won’t stop at least giving us vegan options on your recipes if not entirely vegan recipes! You’re my favorite blogger and even my omni family loves your food!

  35. Why have I never thought to dip bananas in yogurt and freeze them? Genius! Thanks so much for the inspiration.

  36. Sarah S. says:

These look so good. I know my boys and I will love these for breakfast or a fun snack.

  37. Tonya says:

snap! r u kidding me with this?? Our go to snack for the summer has just been found!

  38. Love this idea – so cute & easy. You always have the cutest food ideas (even if you did have pinterest inspiration). =)

  39. These are so cute Sarah. I love the little mini bites as well!!

I’ve been super busy and slacking on my blog reading, but I hope you’ve been well. xoxo

  40. Beth says:

These look great! I made the Spectacular Carrot Cake for Mother’s Day, but I failed, I think because I used flax egg. I even baked it 10 minutes longer. One layer fell apart into big hunks and the other layer was mere crumbs, so I stuffed the crumbs into silicon cupcake holder things. I redid that layer, and that again didn’t stick together, so now I have big hunks of carrot cake in the freezer for when we need a carrot cake fix or if I decide to attempt cake balls. :) And I sent my husband to Whole Foods after mass to get a cake. It all worked out! :)

  41. I know, isn’t it amazing weather around here lately?? (I’m in Vancouver). Just gorgeous – and perfect for these banana splits!

  42. Love the Ice, Ice Baby line. :) These sound wonderful!

  43. I am pondering a slight change, as a non greek yogurt fan. I am wondering if one could dip or brush on regular vanilla yogurt with peanut butter mixed in for protein, then coat with a little bit of chocolate chips/nuts. But that would be good too. May have to give it a try. Not sure if I have popsicle sticks around or not though.

  44. Cait's Plate says:

Ah! Love this!! I was just saying I wanted to make Greek Yogurt popsicles but I think the idea of using the banana as the base is even better!

  45. Kristyn says:

These look amazing. What a great summer treat! I can’t wait to try this recipe! BTW…I love all your recipes. I am considering buying your cookbook because everything looks so delicious.

  46. Michal says:

Just wanted to tell you that I sent your website to a friend who wanted us to have a dinner party. She decided to make your kale salad with the peanuts and apples. Even though I love your blog, I’d been holding out on trying kale ever since a failed kale chips attempt. But your salad was SO good that I’m converted now.

  47. These look like snacks my kiddos would love! Have to find the So Delicious Greek Yogurt.

  48. I just put a batch of these in the freezer for an after dinner treat on this sunny and warm MN day. I used Oikos super fruits yogurt (pomegranate, acai and raspberry) with mini chocolate chips. My boys are going to love them!

  49. Omg these look amazing! I need to make them sometime soon!

  50. Katie says:

Check out the hook while my dj revolves it! Ice Ice Baby! (I may have been born in ’88 but I definitely caught your lyric quote!)

  51. Rae says:

Looks delicious! Too bad Trader Joe’s Chocolate Chips are no longer vegan and are now dairy!! :(
Devastated like me? Write here: http://www.traderjoes.com/about/product-information-form.asp

  52. Janetha says:

These are so darn cute! It almost makes me wish I had kids to make them for! Well, no, but you know what I mean. Penny and Randy wouldn’t appreciate the cuteness. XO

  53. Adorable! I’m not sure if I love these more because they’re easy or because they’re cute n’ pink. :)

  54. Judi says:

Favorite sandwich – peanut butter and honey on a yeast roll

  55. Sophie says:

Divine & tasty lollipop’s! So healthy to!! You are a clever woman! :)
    Yum Yum Yum!

  56. Carrie says:

What protein powders (in general) do you use and love? Thanks!!!

  57. Lisa says:

I was just chuckling over “If you got a problem, yo, I’ll solve it.” and my husband busted out the entire song. WOW
    :)

  58. I cannot wait to try these with my kiddos! Thank you, thank you for the inspiration!!!

  59. Kristi says:

I just made these with my kiddos! They are freezing right now while my husband bathes the kids. I didn’t have any flavored Greek yog, so I used plain yog with Stevia and some sf jam mixed in. Delicious! (I know because I licked the spoon!) I also crumbled up some Trader Joes chocolate cat cookies for another topping. Love your blog Mama Pea!!

  60. Oh my! These look absolutely amazing! And so healthy & affordable…. can’t wait to try them out soon!
