21 NATURALLY Green Recipes for St. Patrick’s Day
It seems like this time of year, everyone’s slipping a little Green Dye #3 into everything.
I totally get why people like food coloring. It’s pretty! But I don’t want to eat it. And I don’t really want my kids to eat it either.
Lucky for us all, there are a lot of delicious green things we can still eat without tartazine (aka coal tar).
So I’d encourage you to eat as many green things as you’d like this St. Patrick’s Day and here’s where to start!
Clockwise from top left: Green Bean Fries, Saag Peaneer, Almost Chipotle Guacamole, My Favorite Green Juice, Pickle Soup, Green Tofu Curry, Cilantro Jalapeno Hummus, Coconut Collard Greens, Cake Batter Green Smoothie, Magic Kale Salad, Dill Pickle Fries, Sunshine Kale Salad, Crunchy Shredded Sprouts Salad, Domestic Goddess Dressing, Curry Kale Chips and Green Greyhounds
Five more green recipes I’m dying to try:
Ashley’s Avocado Banana Pudding
Katie’s Shamrock Shake
Jessica’s Pesto Parmesan Scones
Joy’s Edamame & Toasted Coconut in Avocados
Angela’s Homemade Bailey’s Irish Cream
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Celebrate by eating something green—naturally!

Totally agree with your food dye thoughts…yuck! Our “green” smoothies are always pink around here due to raspberries and a certain young man’s aversion to drinking something green. But kale chips stay green and are so yum! I think we’ll have some on Sat….

We put our green smoothie in princess cups with lids…you can’t see the color
YUM. That’s it. <3
oh mama pea! so many choices!!!
Sunshine Kale Salad!! I will eat that from 6am – 8pm on St. Patrick’s day and call it good. I swear, I’ve never tasted anything so delicious. It’s my #1 favorite food…ahead of CAKE. You win.
You need to change the name of your blog.
Just bookmarked the green bean fries and the cake batter green smoothie – can’t wait to try them out!
I had the fries with dinner last night and the smoothie for a snack today. You have good taste!
I am so down with making green recipes without the crazy food dyes. Off to explore every recipe you’ve linked, because…well…YUM!
I’d take ANY of these things right now. Bring on the (real) green!
Can you bring me some for dinner?
You haven’t eaten dinner yet? Girl! Get yo’self to the kitchen!
Definitely looking back at some of those recipes! All of them are so good and perfect for the holiday! Yay for green foods!
I was feeling the same way! Getting kind of sick of all the green dye recipes. These all look delicious- I’m especially intrigued by the green bean fries. Thanks for some great ideas!
Amen, sista! Green food dye is my stomach’s enemy. I never realized it before, but now when I have some, I have an extremely unpleasant reaction. Pass the green plants, please!
Reading all these green food dye posts this week I thought I was the only one out there without food dye in my pantry. Glad to know I’m not!
I know they make natural dyes, but spinach never did me wrong!
I love green foods, especially guacamole! Yum! Happy St. Patricks Day, I hope its wonderful for you!
Thank you! I love this! Spinach should aallllways be used in lieu of green food dye, especially since you can’t even taste it. I remember one year my bf at the time emptied like half a bottle of green (un-natural!!) food dye into my beer and I was SO UPSET. I refused to drink the beer, and that’s saying a lot.
I’m with you on the food coloring. I’ve always cringed on the few occasions when I’ve used it.
I just made arugula pesto… There’s my green!
Great looking roundup! I want to dig in to it all.
I am guilty as charged with green food coloring. Oh well
I never gave a second thought to food dye. I still have a lot to learn. About a month ago I read about them and some reactions people have. I thought it was false information and eliminated all food dye Just to prove them wrong. I haven’t had a headache since. Guess they were on to something. Now I make sure this is a no dye household.
There’s been some talk at work about having a green food potluck. You see, the name of my company is Luscious Verde. So it makes sense, St. Patrick’s day, have a green food potluck, right? Well, I’ll be sending everyone over here to check out this post on green food. I don’t want anyone thinking the only way to have green food is with dye! Thank you for opening up our eyes.
Thanks for the recipea roundup – I had forgotten about a couple of those that I have wanted to try. Gives me some new dinners to plan next week. The other recipes you linked look fabulous – wish I had that mint shake right now!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day to you and your family!
You too, Christine!
I agree with your on those dyed foods! There are so many naturally great green things (avocado, kale, mint, and of course, spinach!!) so why on earth anyone would want to ruin that is beyond me! Going to check out these recipes right now!
Love this idea! Thanks for all of the wonderful recipes and ideas to move away from icky green food colouring.
If I don’t have sunflower seed butter, can I substitute almond butter or anything else? And could I use regular tofu or does it need to be silk?
For the smoothie? You can sub any nut butter, but if you don’t have silken tofu, I’d just leave that out.
Love this! Much better than things that are artificially green! I tried to make my oats green with food dye and it was horrendous. I could barely choke it down just because it looked so gross!
THANK YOU for this. I’ve been seeing these dyed recipes come through and wrinkling my nose. Pinned and tweeted it.
Thank you!
Green bean fries! What a great idea! I just got a pound of them through my produce co-op and wasn’t sure what to do with them, as I can’t stand them boiled because they remind me of my mom’s that she cooked to death with fatty bacon and potatoes.
By the way, I now have a binder with your recipes in them as a supplement to your cookbook (which I use constantly). This (and the Almond Joy cookie bars I made Wed. night) will have to tide me over until your 2nd book comes out.
I feel so proud of that second binder of yours–that’s awesome!
I will be downing some green stuff tomorrow…
Kale that is, no green beer for me.
Have a great weekend Mama Pea!
Oh my goodness! That article from the Huff Post is so interesting. Even inconclusive results in studies make me think twice about what I’m eating. I love all of your natural green foods too! What a fun post.
I’m loving those french fries!
Thanks Mama Pea!!
I just posted pistachio pudding as my naturally green food. I am also a little freaked out when people start dying anything and everything green…part of it is the chemical thing, but part of it is also just the idea that there are some foods that shouldn’t be green! Beer would be a lovely example. Ew.
I vote for pickle soup!
i have always found it to be unappetizing to see foods that aren’t naturally green, suddenly turned green! especially milk… *shudder* but these ideas are perfect!! i’m being totally pulled to your almost chipotle guacamole! i’ve been on an avocado kick lately!
It’s SO easy to be green! Great suggestions. No need to add any weird green food coloring to already naturally yummy greens! Bring on the green beverages!
MamaPea, the Kale Sunshine salad is hands down one of the best salads I have ever had! So much so, that it has become a staple in my weekly menu. My husband is of Persian-Armenian descent so the flavors of the garlic and tahini hit home for him. Thank you sooo much for sharing!
That’s great, Sandi! Thanks for the wonderful feedback.
