Pea Sighting: Valentine’s Day Treats on AM Northwest (VIDEO)

IMG_7761

First, a few things:

1.  Happy Valentine’s Day!

2.  There were four Pinterest-inspired Valentine’s in Lulu’s valentine bag and three in Gigi’s.  The girls just ripped the superhero masks and flower petals off of their suckers and ate them without a second thought.  This means 20 lips and 21 mustaches are in a landfill somewhere thanks to me.

3.  One should never stay up to watch The Bachelor when one has to get up at 5 a.m. to be on morning TV.  Come to think of it, one should never stay up to watch The Bachelor.  But I still will.

4.  Between Pea Daddy’s cold this weekend, the AM Northwest host Dave’s virus and my late night rendezvous with reality shows, I anticipate I will be sick in exactly 16 hours.  God bless me.

5.  Leftover maple frosting is awesome on graham crackers.  And spoons.  And fingers swiped into the bowl that’s in your lap while you are driving from Portland to preschool.

6.  Lulu got a valentine from her “boyfriend” today that was generically addressed to all of her classmates, saying, “To my friend.”  She’s clutching it to her chest, fluttering her eyelashes skyward and saying, “He said I’m his friend!”  It’s true love.

7.  I ran to the grocery store after my segment this morning, treating myself to a coffee on the way there.  People kept staring at me in the store and I grinned. Admittedly, a small part of me thought, “Oh, they must have seen the show!”  Then I got to the car and saw the big smudge of espresso grounds that somehow wound up all over the tip of my nose.  That’s what you call an ego check.

8.  At least Pea Daddy still loves me.  God bless him.

Hope you enjoy the clip!

Peas and Thank You: Delicious Baked Donuts
  1. Thanks for posting the clip, it was so fun to watch! You did such a nice job; you’re great on camera, and you look fantastic :) Also, I love Lulu’s reaction to her “boyfriend’s” Valentine. There’s nothing quite like puppy love!

  2. “Watch your fingers or they will not be vegan anymore” –HAHAHA!!! Loved it…you’re great!

  3. Jil says:

Awesome job Mama Pea! Congrats and the donuts look delish as usual :)

  4. Meghan says:

These look so good! I attempted to make them on Sunday, but yours are way prettier! MIne were still delicious though! :) I am new to the veggie lifestyle and your website and cookbook has helped me so much! Thank you for all of the yummy ideas!

  5. Kelly says:

Jokes GALORE in the clip! Loved it.

  6. Evan Thomas says:

    I definitely “Awwww”ed at #6

  7. Caiti says:

You are beautiful, love the curls :)

  8. You did a great job! You’re hair was so pretty. Can’t wait to see you do more TV. Maybe someday you’re own show. (fingerscrossed). Happy Valentine’s Day!

  9. Chris says:

It was so fun to see a video of you! I am a relatively new reader and I love hearing the voices of and seeing the mannerisms of the people I read. And this is something really small and silly, but I loved your nails! It is esp silly b/c I keep mine super short and never paint them, but I always notice woman’s when they are cooking and it irks me when they are too long/bright/etc. But yours looked so classy, lol. I have no idea why that appeals to me!

My hubby (he’s the cook around here) has recently made a few dinners based on your recipes and they are awesome! Looking forward to trying more!!

    • MamaPea says:

Thanks so much. It’s nice to “meet” you, Chris.

Thanks for the nails compliments. I rarely have time for a manicure and just threw on some polish myself last night, so I’m glad you liked them.

      Welcome to the site!

  10. Sasha says:

Love your hair. Love your nails. And boy, you’re such a natural in front of the camera! True star material :)

  11. Chetney says:

You are such a natural on camera, I wouldn’t be surprised if they asked you to come in as a regular! I love your hair like that too! So pretty! Happy Valentines!

  12. Lauren says:

“Be careful of your fingers or they won’t be vegan anymore” – hysterical!

Great clip! I have to agree, you’re a natural on camera.

I should really make some of those donut holes this weekend..

  13. I love how pinterest is slowly taking over the world :)

  14. Joan says:

Fun to watch, can’t wait to try the doughnuts. I love maple and I’ll be looking for that salt
    . Cute curls, too!

  15. Awesome donuts, and way to rock your segment. Hopefully that was pre-espresso nose. Sounds like it was…and even if it wasn’t, it could have just been a ‘beauty mark’, right? :)

  16. Socal Rachel says:

Thanks for sharing with all your readers, you were wonderful!

  17. Vicki says:

That was so fun!!! I was super bummed when I heard you were on AMNorthwest and I’d missed it!!! so thanks for posting this. I was going to make the donuts for our valentine’s dessert, but talked myself out of the donut pan at Freddie’s, then realized I forgot to buy regular flour, and the maple extract… oh well. I have the smoked salt! wheee.

I love how you make vegan-ing such a hoot! Thank you! If, nay, WHEN you get your own show, I’ll DVR it for sure.

  18. Nae says:

I work in PR, and I love that you presented these so well (and that you got mention of your website in at the end) :) Must have a great frame of mind.

Also, want to make these now. They look delicious!

  19. Ali says:

    Happy Love day Mama!

  20. Tiffany says:

You were incredible! you look gorgeous!! How do you stay so fit with all those sweets around your kitchen? :)

    Happy Valentines day!

  21. How fun! You totally rocked it!

  22. Greta says:

Ha! I loved the “It’s nice and thick, which is how I like my… donuts” part. Seriously, though, you did great, and I think the donuts look wonderful!

  23. Martha says:

You are so great on live TV! Congratulations. Hope you stay well!

  24. Elizabeth says:

You may be the funniest person that I don’t know! I watch the Bachelor, too. (don’t tell anyone) I’m reasonably intelligent, too, but I swear after a long day at work on Monday – it’s my little slice of heaven. I’m holding back from TONS of Courtney comments. We’ll do lunch. We’ll talk.
It was so exciting to watch your clip! I have to get a donut pan today or I will surely die…

  25. Katie says:

You did such a great job, as I knew you would rockstar ; ) teaching that guy all about the vegan way of cooking, haha! Love it!

    Congrats girl!

Hope you and the family had a happy v-day! <3

  26. Kim says:

“Watch your fingers or they won’t be vegan any more.” :-D

I don’t comment often, but I really enjoy your blog – the recipes, your kids, and just your style of writing. Just thought you should know. :)

  27. Simply Life says:

Great job!!! I’m so impressed you can bake, teach and talk at the same time! :)

  28. Patti Carnaroli says:

Great job! You were awesome! I do hope, at some point, you’ll let us in on how you stay so slim… Can’t wait for book #2!

  29. Great job! You are so amazing!

  30. You look beautiful on camera (and off obviously!). Love the curly hair. Love the recipe. GREAT job! :)

And we all know that espresso nose is HOT!

  31. You were fantastic Mama Pea, as always! I’ve always wondered about vegan recipes and the high quantities of baking powder. Sometimes I’ve figured that they were just typos but your mention of it in the clip confirms that that’s not the case. Does this help to give the baked goods (donuts in this case) more of a rise? Do you always buy the aluminum free kind? Thanks!

    • MamaPea says:

I always use more baking powder than a traditional “egg” recipe for more of a rise. I buy Trader Joe’s…I’m not sure if it is aluminum free of not–I guess I should check!

  32. Kim says:

    LOVED your nails!

  33. Christine says:

Yum! Yum! Yum! Those donuts look amazing! You’re such a natural in front of the camera! :-0

  34. You look amazing and did a great job with the banter with Dave (you are a natural for TV).

I made these for my kids and they LOVED them!

I bet that espresso looked super hot with those curls you are rockin’

  35. Ana says:

Nice video, you are awesome in front of the cameras Mama Pea. And I have to say that your hair is gorgeous, I love your curls, so pretty! You look a lot more natural and beautiful that way!
I need to buy a doughnut pan, those look so good! Maybe I will make some doughnut holes this afternoon, I am sure my son would love those! By the way, do you have a mini doughnut pan or just the regular? Would you recommend one over the other?
    Ana

    • MamaPea says:

Thank you, Ana. I have a regular donut pan and I would much rather have it than a mini. No one has ever eaten a donut and said, “You know, I wish that would have been smaller.”

  36. Joanne says:

thanks for theclip! it was so fun ti watch!!!You are very great on camera!lulu is such a cute little girl!!!

  37. Kristy says:

    Haha, the audience LOVED you!

  38. Krista says:

amazing job there Mama! love, love, love your curls! and your donuts – can’t wait to try that recipe out. :)

  39. Lauren says:

Okay, seriously, how stinkin’ cute are you?! Fearlessly taking over the AM Northwest morning show with humor and style- love it! Great job on the segment! I cannot wait to try the donuts.

  40. Libby says:

Great appearance. Good thing you’e got the coffee-nose to keep you humble. :)

  41. Anne says:

Great job, Sarah! You look so relaxed. All the donuts looked amazing. I loved your nail polish. LOL And I could hear lots of background chuckles. You Wow’ed them again!

  42. Such a natural! You are great on camera. And you look so beautiful!! Love the curls :)

  43. Christine says:

OMG you are so adorable with your curls and your witty banter! You are such a natural in front of the camera – I hope they call on you with increasing regularity. The jokes were funny too – I loved how the audience (was there an audience or was that the crew?) were cracking up as well!

Your ears should have been burning last night – I was making your Chewy Cashew Bars and my husband commented that he likes all of your recipes and that your cookbook is his go-to cookbook now. (mine too!) We are now eating Sunshine Salad for lunch every day. :-)

Now I want some maple frosting…yummmmmmmmmm……

  44. You look lovely Mama Pea! Love the lavendar. Also- It’s so fun to see you in action and see the food come together. Thanks for posting (and waking up at a god awful hour!)

  45. brandi says:

    that was a great segment!

and i’ll take any extra donuts you have. just offering my help :)

  46. Awesome job! I loved the comment about finger gratings not being vegan. ;) You don’t know how many times I’ve almost made my recipes non-vegetarian by doing that…

  47. Bethany says:

Congrats, Mama Pea! And I watch The Bachelor, too. I think it’s the only way I can survive Mondays :) And I laughed about your “ego check,” too funny! :)

  48. Jen says:

Your curls looked great on that segment. :)

  49. Hahaha aw V-Day is so much fun when you are still in Elementary School!!

  50. The video clip was so much fun! I’ve heard that it’s really hard to let your personality shine through when you’re on TV – whether it’s nerves or what have you – but I thought you were hilarious… non-vegan donuts because the cohost sliced his finger? Great job, Mama Pea!

  51. Katie says:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again…I am just head over heels in love with Lulu. And also in love with you and your witty little curly head.

  52. You are a natural and so funny Sarah! You can get Earth Balance at Walmart and Super Target. I think people think you can only get vegan ingredients at a natural foods store. Next time I’m at Target I’ve got to get a donut pan. I’ve always been scared to get one because I’ll make donuts all the time haha :)

  53. Nour says:

    Absolutely loving the hair!

  54. Beth says:

Great job, Mama Pea! You’re a natural!
I had hoped to make the maple donuts last weekend but ran out of time, but will definitely make them this weekend! I even got the smoked sea salt and maple extract.
Hope they have you back often!

  55. Audrey says:

    Loved the video clip!

  56. Kristen says:

What a great segment! I hope it garnered a lot of interest in your website and cookbook. I have certainly enjoyed your cookbook and look forward to the next one, especially the coconut recipes!

  57. Jenny says:

I’m not big on sweets, but I do get a craving for donuts about once a year, and then immediately feel awful after eating them. I think I would like these baked donuts much more, as I wouldn’t feel so weighed down from all of the oil in the fried ones. You are great on camera- a total natural.

  58. I’m shamelessly obsessed with The Bachelor. :) Always have better things to do, always watch it anyways.

  59. Wow, you got a ton of time on the air!! CONGRATS! Also, they definitely butchered your last name. I think you deserve another cooking sesh on air for that.

  60. Lara says:

The whole time I was watching this video I was just thinking, “I really like her nail polish.” :)

  61. Diana says:

You did a great job! Your hair looks so beautiful!

I have a question about whole wheat flour vs. white whole wheat flour….

Is white whole wheat flour just as nutritious as whole wheat?

Also, What flours do you recommend to keep in my pantry? (I have whole wheat pastry flour and white flour)

Can whole wheat pastry flour be used interchangeably in baked goods when the recipe calls for whole wheat flour?

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! :)

    • MamaPea says:

      Thanks, Diana.

Yes, white whole wheat is just as nutritious as whole wheat. I think you have the right flours in your pantry (maybe just check to see if your white flour is unbleached?). I would definitely use whole wheat pastry flour instead of whole wheat in cakes, muffins and cookies, but if it’s a bread or pizza dough that needs more gluten and structure, I wouldn’t sub the pastry flour. Hope that helps!

  62. cristin says:

That was such a cute segment. And you look great!

  63. oh i miss graham crackers. and maple extract come to think of. we need a better export market here in the UK from places other than India!

  64. Amber K says:

Well, I already told you this: but you were awesome on the show! You’re always so funny. And I hope you don’t get sick!

  65. You nailed it (and looked GREAT!). You are so great on camera!
The doughnuts look fantastic. And I’m thinking that since I have that same smoked sea salt, that’s an excuse to make the maple ones. :)
I have to wake up at 4:30 on Tuesday mornings to teach spin class before I go to my full-time job, but I ALWAYS stay up to watch the (stupid) Bachelor on Monday nights. I pay for it all day long on Tuesday.

  66. I am super impressed!!! You looked fabulous – LOVE your curls/haircut!!!!
You know what is so great – with appearances like yours on mainstream TV, you are totally debunking the myth that a Vegan lifestyle is for hippies – that is one of my goals for my blog. That even though we are following a plant-based diet, we can be trendy and hip (at least I TRY to be trendy and hip, lol) – not necessarily hippy. Even though I will admit, I still hold my Birkenstocks close to my heart ;)
Also love the idea for donut holes – super cute.
    ~Rebecca
P.S. I am frustratingly addicted to this season of Bachelor, but try to DVR it so I can watch it the next evening without commericals – which also allows time for me to watch my other (sad) reality TV obsession…Dance Moms.

  67. katie says:

where did you get your dress???

  68. Sus says:

Awesome, that was so fun to see you :) I find some people on TV shows like this are quite awkward – so not you!

And the curls are fantastic, keep embracing them :)

  69. Awesome!

On a complete un-food-related note, I love that nail color. Super Valentine’s appropriate (I’m sure you actually put thought into that, so know that someone really did notice!)

  70. AR fans says:

Enjoyed the clip, Sarah, & seeing adorable YOU on t.v. You’re so fun to watch and listen to! Love the curls! :) They’re perfect on you! Girl, you’re such a natural in front of the cameras— appear super comfortable. I liked seeing how you interacted so well with the host! Good job! Pleeeeeeeeeease Food Network sign her up!!! :)

  71. You did such an awesome job! You’re so natural on camera! The donuts looked great!

  72. Lauren says:

Seriously…why hasn’t foodnetwork called you yet to get your own show! I think we need to start a movement…

  73. you have a great tv personality!

  74. LOVE your outfit. LOVE your hair. LOVE you. always love to see you in action :)

  75. Olivia says:

You’re a natural on TV! So fun to watch! :) (In fact, I was so engrossed I forgot I had something cooking in the kitchen! Oops, just barely saved it before it turned black. lol)

  76. Oh.. you are so cute on TV. :) So glad you made the donuts. And oh your hair….. I just love it curly. :) Um.. and I get reality checks every single day. Espresso grounds on the nose is pretty good compared to what I pull off. Ha ha! Hugs!

  77. Roanne says:

You need your own vegan cooking show, I’d totally watch all the time. You have such a fun personality! :D

  78. love the video! we want to eat your donuts!!! they look so good!
    HUGS

    L&M

  79. Jen says:

Rats! I cannot seem to view the video on my iPad (sounds fantastic, though)…

  80. Jennie says:

Wow – they really did a number on your last name when they posted it on screen! Haha…just throw in a couple extra letters for good measure! :) You look beautiful though…and the donuts are so yummy!! I had to go out and buy a donut pan a while ago when you started doing the donut recipes. I made the chocolate sprinkle ones recently for breakfast when we had friends visiting and they were VERY impressed. :) I love that they’re so easy to make …yet look so special!

  81. Laura says:

You are too cute! “Just flip it over!” Hahaha

I think you need your own show!

  82. Jessica says:

OMG, FAVORITE clip of you yet! There was so much humor in this clip from both you and the host. Loved the “They wont be vegan anymore from you” (with the chuckles of the crew in the background) and the comment from him that his coworkers think he is infected.
    LOVE it!

  83. Stacey says:

Eyelash glue is Nearrings best friend- just sayin’

  84. kathryn says:

I like your pink nails with your dress!

  85. Jared says:

You are so personable and natural on camera! Hopefully you reached out to many viewers and they will experience the ease in creating incredible cruelty-free desserts from you.

  86. holly says:

“i like my frosting thick on my doughnuts”

    …and TWSS.

love you! and you are such a natural on cam. happy belated v-day my friend <3

  87. Caroline says:

You look so beautiful in the video! It’s nice to see you in another way. Love your post as always!

  88. Sally says:

I just saw this. Great video! You always make baking look so easy, and your recipes always turn out so good! I can’t wait for your 2nd “coconutty” book :) And you look beautiful! I love your dress, your manicure, your hair everything :)

  89. Katie says:

Oh The Bachelor…why do we do that to ourselves?
