Chocolate Covered Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Footballs
I want to be a cheerleader.
Not the competitive, insane basket throwing kind on ESPN.
More of the Sue Heck, bursting with enthusiasm, persistently optimistic kind.
I know it’s a little late, but I can still carry that cheerleader spirit into my life. And maybe the skirt?
I’ve spent too many years of my life thinking it was uncool to wear green on St. Patrick’s Day.
I was too cool to play mini-golf, listen to boy bands or let my mom call me “Muffy” in public.
Too cool to do anything that could be labeled as “cutesy.”
But you know what?
It’s time to stop caring what’s cool.
It’s boring to wear black on St. Patrick’s Day.
Mini golf is a blast, Justin Timberlake is beyond talented and I’m lucky to have a mom and a pet name. Call me Muffy whenever and wherever you want, Mom. You too, JT.
Cutesy is fun.
Cool is overrated.
Life is delicious.
Rah rah rah.
Chocolate Covered Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Footballs
Makes 12-15 footballs
Dough balls:
- 1/4 c. non-dairy margarine (i.e. Earth Balance)
- 1/2 c. natural peanut butter
- 1/4 c. organic brown sugar
- 1/3 c. organic powdered sugar
- 1/4 t. vanilla extract
- 1/2 t. baking powder
- 1/4 t. baking soda
- 1/2 t. salt
- 1/2 c. whole wheat pastry flour
- 1/4 c. unbleached organic flour
- 1/4 c. natural peanut butter chips
- 1/4 c. non-dairy chocolate chips
Chocolate coating:
- 1 c. non-dairy chocolate chips
- 1 T. coconut oil
Royal icing:
- 1 T. coconut flour
- 3 T. water
- 1 1/2 c. –2 c. powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Using a stand mixer, beat margarine, peanut butter, sugars and vanilla until fully incorporated.
In a separate bowl, combine baking powder, baking soda, salt and flours.
Add dry mixture to the mixer bowl a little at a time.
Mix until a dough forms and add your chips.
This is a slightly wetter dough than the original dough balls due to more peanut butter. Which is never a bad thing.
Combine and chill dough for 30 minutes.
Scoop dough with a spoon and your fingers and shape into footballs. ![]()
Place balls on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes. They’ll still be soft and look much like they did going in, but don’t overbake.
Let the dough balls rest on the pan for a minute before transferring to a cooling rack.
When the balls are cool, I’d suggest transferring them to the freezer for another 15-20 minutes. This will help keep them firm enough to withstand the dipping.
Melt chocolate and coconut oil together in a double boiler or microwave.
Carefully dip chilled footballs in chocolate and transfer to waxed paper to set. (Don’t set them on the rack as pictured or you’ll have to chisel them off. A bummer, but not enough to kill my enthusiasm.)
You can transfer the balls back to the freezer or fridge to help the chocolate harden more quickly if you like.
For icing, beat together coconut flour, water and powdered sugar, adding more water or powdered sugar as needed to get a pipe-able consistency.
Transfer icing to a pastry bag fitted with a writing tip or simply place icing in a resealable plastic bag and snip off the corner.
Pipe laces onto each football when chocolate has completely set.
Just when you thought dough balls couldn’t get any more delicious.
Any more decadent.
Any more cute.
I’ve got spirit.
Yes, I do.
I’ve got spirit.
How ‘bout you?

These are so cute!!! Rah rah rah
I am so not crafty, so this was kind of a big deal for me.
Oh my, I think I’ll be proposing marriage after these! Looking forward to the next book, keep up the great work!
I do!
What a brilliant idea! Life is SO delicious…especially in the Pea household.
This is what I was in my workout clothes all day yesterday. Worth it? Totally.
oh MAMA PEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So ridic, right?
Go team! I might actually watch a football game or pretend to if these were served to me.
You’re trying to kill us with all this deliciousness!!! Or does the whole ‘eating vegetables’ thing cancel these out?
These would be super cute as Easter eggs.
We totally kept saying, “These are so much better than Reese’s eggs!”
Holy cow! GIMME!!!
love it! Wish I lived closer so we could watch the game together. Or at least until halftime. I never make it to the end.
Me neither. I’m usually into the National Anthem and then I’m done.
You are infinitely clever. These are adorable!
Thank you! Response to your email coming… (squeeeeeeal!)
Oh no you didn’t…but seriously, could you have not made these TWO days earlier??
omg…you’ve outdone yourself MP!
These could be Easter Eggs too! Yum!
I’m really not a football fan but these are cute! Gave me the idea of making egg shaped ones for Easter. I think I’m going to have to do that
gigi makes a pass to mama pea and ohhhh interception by felicia right into her mouth. how convenient! lulu… on the sidelines eatin’ a pickle. typical!
Ha ha…hilarious!
Those footballs are cute. You still have time to get your girls to be cheerleaders. I think Lulu will be a natural. She already has the boy craziness I associate with cheerleaders.
Yes, but she’d actually want to be on the field rather than the sidelines.
I sort of hate football, but I’d consider watching it for these…
These look so amazing, and I love the original recipe but more peanut butter + chocolate. You’ve outdone yourself again. =)
MAMA PEA FTW!!!
(I have decided I am not too cool to speak in abbreviation!)
See, that’s the spirit. And I’m not too cool to use emoticons!
This is such a cute idea! And I can swap in gluten -free flours so easily. I don’t usually make sweets for super bowl, but I am easily convinced. We will see how long the motivation lasts when I have drinks and a pound of guac and beans in my belly.
You could actually just make the GF doughballs and chocolate cover those!
If only I were into the super bowl…maybe i can just make them into eggs for Easter?
Yes, exactly!
WOO! go team
i still don’t really think i ever want to be a cheerleader (except for my hubby & kiddos) but i would make these doughballs in a heartbeat!
Not even a Spartan cheerleader? Don’t make me pull out the perfect cheer.
These look amazing! Oh I want some. And I totally agree with you, life is too short to care, be exactly who you are, cutesy and all!
Yup, yup, yuppers!
I’m coming over to your house for the big game.
You are too cool Sarah! Those cookie dough footballs are adorable!
Thank you!
Oohh, these look fantastic!! Such a cute Superbowl treat
Those would be cute mice for halloween
Great idea! I’m totally whipping these out as Easter eggs too.
Touchdown!
The real question, though, is can you spike them!?
Now you’re talking…
Adorable!
These are so stinking cute I can’t even take it!!
I’m sure if I tried to make these, they wouldn’t look anything like footballs. But I’m tempted anyways because they sound so good!
Trust me. If I can do this, you can do this.
Mama pea you’ve outdone yourself…these are sooo cute!
You are an inspiration. Wow!
Those. Are. Awesome! Talk about taking something already pretty much perfect and making them even better!
SO ADORABLE. I hadnt decided if I was attending the Super Bowl party I was invited to.. But I might just so I have an excuse to make these.
I am trying to think of how to fetch myself an invite to one too just so I can bring these.
these are SO FREAKIN’ CUTE!!! i wasn’t too excited about the big game, but this dessert has changed that. they are game-changers (ha).
See, it’s this unabashed cheesiness that I just love!
Super cute! Good job, Muffy!
JT, is that you????
Well aren’t these the cutest thing since sliced vegan bread and earth balance butter.
Seriously…adorable. And so creative! And Patience of a Saint with all that piping of the white stripes. Not that you had anything better to do like write a cookbook in 23 days or anything
GAH, don’t remind me!!!
These are the most creative and cutest things I have ever seen. I think I just found a reason to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday (which I normally could care less about lol). As always, you rock.
These look so yum! And yes, JT is the best thing that ever happened to hot boys. I was on the dance team in high school and it was AWESOME! I was not a “cutesie” girl, but dancing, that was for real.
i think you one upped sue heck, thats for sure. Besides, your kids are way cuter. Love the footballs!
You are magnificent. These footballs are amazing. How in the heck do you make them so perfect? PS- I share a birthday with JT and I want to be wherever you’re going to be for the super bowl. I want some of your delicious treats.
Gah, you said the P-word! (Did you not catch the part about having to chisel them off the cooling rack
Hope you have a wonderful weekend, friend. I know your heart has been heavy, but I hope there’s some lifting going on.
omg. I’m not into football, but I’ll take some football cookies, pwease!
These are freaking adorable!!! I’m all for cutesy.
These are the cutest treats ever! I need to think of an excuse to make these….never thought I’d be desperate to bake football cookies…
You just made football 10000x more fun. I could totally see myself curled up on the sofa with my Giants sweatshirt and a plate of these. Rah rah go team!
Oh, and I bet these are awesome boy bait too
You said it.
These are adorable!
Oh these are awesome! Love the football idea : )
If I was having a superbowl party, these would be fun to make!
Happy Weekend to you and the family! <3
Oh no, why the cheer at the end?! Thanks for the earworm!
*sigh* These look so good. OK, you’ve twisted my arm…I’m going to attempt doughballs again. Not sure why I am so challenged with these…maybe it is the whole underbaking thing I am messing up. So, this weekend…doughballs and Mmmm Sauce will be made.
Yes, yes, yes!!! You will have a good weekend, indeed.
These look SO good Mama Pea, not to mention adorable!! I don’t even understand how football works but I want to have a superbowl party just so I can make these!
Oh how I wish I had time to make these! They are so cute and I’m sure they’re totally delicious, too.
These are precious!
Good job with the decorating! Ummm, do you even need to bake these?! They look fine to me before they go into the oven…. YAAAAAY time saver!
I think they would fall apart when you dip them. There’s no real delicate way to do it.
Okay, now those are super cute and would get me excited about watching the super bowl.
Absolutely adorable! I’m in New England and having people over Sunday night – these are on the menu! GO PATS!
Let me know how they go over!
So whimsical and cute!! Hope you have a lovely game day, m’dear.
If I could eat these through the screen, I would! They look amazing
You rock, Mama Pea! Wednesday night I made Mama Pea’s Balls, from which these are based, and they are a-maz-ing. I don’t have a party to go to Sunday, either, but I just might make them anyway. I never need an excuse for chocolate!
Wonderful! I’m so glad you enjoyed the originals and hope you give these a try!
By the way, these would also work for Easter eggs with different decoration. So cute!
Those are TOO cute!! And now I must go fan myself after mentions of JT.
Cute is the best. These look great!
Here’s how excited i was for your book- which came in the mail yesterday afternoon:
I have a six month old who is nursing and still gets up 3 times at night. I am in my third year of law school. At night. I got home from my 8-10pm Estates and Trusts and in lieu of sleeping (or studying..) I read the first half of your book.
Then, this morning, after waiting 2 hours to put the little one down, I used those precious nap time minutes to read the other half of your book. I’m hooked!
Thanks for all the inspiration to this veg family
Oh my goodness, I so relate to that scenario…although I can’t imagine doing law school and motherhood at the same time! Thank so much for juggling everything to just be a part of our lives. And gosh, good luck with school!!!
Thank YOU! I never thought my husband would be begging me for more barbecue kale chips and tofu dippers!
The fun thing when they are this young, is that as long as you read to her or talk to her in a sing songy voice she is happy. Earlier I read to her about the little pig who wanted to EXECUTE HIS WILL! So he signed it in the presence of TWO DISINTERESTED WITNESSES YAY!!!!! She loved it. I’m going to be sad when she starts to realize that the “storybook” is my outline
How CUTE! Now can you just make them for me? I am a horrible baker!
You could do this…they are much easier than they look!
Silly Mama Pea, you’re already a cheerleader!
Aren’t cheerleaders’ roles to encourage the team to do better, to score, to try harder?
Isn’t that what your blog is all about??????
YES!!!! “Be aggressive…b-e-aggressive!”
Dough balls on a whole new level…and definitely something to cheer about.
I do have to admit I was not cool in school because I was a cheerleader and always wore green on St. Patrick’s day…what can I say
Happy Friday Mama Pea!
No, that made you ultracool!
Forget about the wings/nachos/man food – this is my kind of super bowl snack. In fact, I may just make these and sit in the other room with them while everyone else watches football.
Now those are footballs I’m interested in playing with. Yum!
Where do you find vegan peanut butter chips? Do you have a source for butterscotch chips too?
I don’t. These cookies aren’t 100% vegan because of that. We are technically a vegetarian family who eats mostly vegan. Sorry to not have a good source for you, but an easy fix is to just sub all chocolate chips.
I don’t think I have ever gotten through a single post without a full on, spit my food out, water through the nose etc. (ill stop) laugh. This post did not disappoint. (well maybe it disappointed my bf because of my reaction, but get used to it bud)
Seriously, bud.
Too cute! I hope I have time to make these before Sunday!
I don’t watch football nor plan to watch the super bowl but I love this idea of making the dough balls into different shapes… so fun!
I must try these and have to agree that more peanut butter is never a bad thing! I love JT too – can he please come out with a new album already? Finally, making your black bean burgers from your book tonight and wondering if they should be frozen cooked or uncooked? Thanks!
I always freeze them cooked, Laura. Hope that helps! Have a good weekend.
That’s what I was thinking. That’s for the help. Can’t wait to try them. Enjoy your weekend too!
These are so darling and add a pop of sweetness to the football watching buffet. Thanks for sharing & Have a Great Weekend:)
Thanks, Renee, you too!
These look amazing! I wonder if they will work with PB2 and dates, making them raw…!
Hope you have a great weekend!
Hmm… kitchen experimentation begins!
A-W-E-S-O-M-E! Awsome, awsome – totally! Typing a cheer from high school isn’t the same as saying it. But these dough balls look awesome!!
These look so delish!! I’m thinking I need to add a dessert to my game day menu.
Please feel free to stay with ‘cute’. These are definitely footballs I can get enthusiastic about
Ahhhh!! these look amazing!!!!
And the only reason i was a cheerleader for 4 years was so i could get thrown in the air:):):) Its really really fun lol cheering on your team when they are losing is not fun!
Mrs Pea I’ve been away for a while because I’ve been so busy with uni (final year!) and I never post usually. I just wanted to say I love your writing so much and always manage to laugh out loud! You manage to exude such warmth, as well as adding vegan recipes into my repertoire of vegetarian meals. We don’t have a super bowl over here, but you bet I’ll find time to make these biscuits!!! lots of love from ‘across the pond’ To.Ta.Lly.Ah.Pre.Ci.Ate (i had to!) xxx
Thank you so much, Sade! Congrats on almost being done with school. I appreciate you taking the time to leave such a sweet comment. Have a great weekend.
The closest I’ll ever get to understanding football is eating on of these…
I’m cheering for your team! These are probably even yummier frozen. Well at least very tasty!
Those look so good! And without the stitching, they become Easter eggs
Incredibly cute! I’ve been reading your blog for a good while now and couldn’t resist throwing a comment on these! I didn’t see a “Pin It” button on this post. You should totally get one so that I can share this with all my fellow pinners
Thanks, Christy. I’ll look in to getting a Pin It button!
Ok these were way easier to make then I expected! They actually look like footballs and taste delicious. My only problem is I’m not sure I made enough for tomorrow’s party….
I told you they were easy! So happy you tried them and liked ‘em!
I’m really impressed these made it to the chocolate-covering stage. They wouldn’t have lasted in my house!!
These are amazing…my teen daughter made them to take to a super bowl party and I’m sure she’ll be the hit of the party! Love them!
Awesome! I’m so glad you guys had success!
And she also took Tempeh Tamale Pie, another of our favorites!
This will most definitely be my excuse for not watching to superbowl next year! Mama Pea saves the day again
These were an absolute HIT!! They were gone within 5 minutes of kick-off – the early birds took 2 – 3 each, and the latecomers had to deal with only hearing about the delicious football treats they’d missed out on!
Way to go, Mama Pea! Thank you for sharing
Yay! I kind of knew you brave souls who attempted these would love ‘em. Well done!
Your blog makes me so happy! You are a cheerleader and a funny one at that!
These footballs too incredible, and I think they could work for any sport or no sport!
My personal favorite part of this post and why I finally decided to post something is because YOU WATCH THE MIDDLE!!?? BEST SHOW EVERRRRR!! Sue Heck is my hero! Definitely and under appreciated sitcom.
Keep up the delicious recipeas and always laugh-out-loud posts
YES! I love Sue Heck!
Okay, I promise I’m not stalking you, I just LOVE your cookie dough balls! http://versatilevegan.wordpress.com/2012/08/26/mini-crush-on-mama-pea/
