Gifts You Can Eat (But Shouldn’t): Lavender Rosemary Gel

IMG_6604

One of the worst things about making a living putting things in writing is that, well, it’s in writing.  Even really stupid things.

Even worse is when you spell “lavender” wrong, photograph it, realize your mistake and know there’s no way in h-e-double hockey sticks that you are reshooting.  Don’t do that.

Worse still is when you say something stupid in a book.  That doesn’t go away, people.

Pull out your copies of Peas and Thank You and turn with me to the intro, page xvii:

I knew I couldn’t change who I was in making the transition.  I wasn’t going to make my own soap or…trade The Bachelorette and my flatiron for a PETA rally and dreadlocks.  I’m too addicted to reality TV and straight hair for that.”

But people change, even if books don’t.

I haven’t used my flatiron in two weeks.

And I’m making my own hair and body gel.  I’ve done some research and learned you can make a phenomenally effective hair gel and moisturizer from flax seeds and essential oils.

I love it.  So much I’m giving it for Christmas presents.

So now I’m a cheap liar with dreadlocks who can’t spell.  The awesome never ends.

Merry Christmas!

Lavender Rosemary Gel

For body and hair

You need:

  • 1/4 c. flax seeds
  • 2 c. water
  • 4-5 drops each of essential oils (i.e. rosemary, lavender, vitamin E and/or jojoba oil)
  • 1 t. honey or agave (optional)
  • 1 knee high or pair of panty hose, cut 6 in. long and including the foot
  • jar with sealable lid
  • tag and ribbon or decorative trim

IMG_6534

To make gel, bring water and flax to a boil over medium high heat, stirring constantly.

IMG_6545

IMG_6547

Once the gel comes to a boil, lower heat and simmer for about ten minutes, until gel has thickened.

IMG_6558

Prepare your jar by lining it with your knee high or pantyhose.  Any cheap drugstore brand will do.  Or the one you wore to rob that bank.

IMG_6553

Allow gel to cool for a few minutes so you don’t burn yourself, and then pour it into the nylon, straining out the flax seeds and helping the gel through into the jar.

IMG_6559

IMG_6564

IMG_6561

You can use a pair of tongs to squeeze the last and thickest of the gel from the nylon.

IMG_6563

The gel will thicken upon cooling.

But at any point you can stir in your oils and/or honey.

IMG_6567

IMG_6573

IMG_6570

The benefits of each add-in:

  • Lavender oil: soothing, relaxing fragrance
  • Rosemary oil: stimulates hair follicles and hair growth
  • Honey: adds control to hair without “crunchiness,” keeps skin and hair hydrated
  • Vitamin E oil: stimulates hair follicles and hair growth
  • Jojoba oil: keeps skin and hair hydrated, promotes healing

To make your gel gift-worthy, label it and affix a bow or adornment.

IMG_6556

You should also indicate to your recipient the potential uses of the gel.

IMG_6587

I’ve been using it in my hair for curl definition, but it’s also great as a rub on your legs after shaving (if you do that kind of thing), as a face mask or even on dry hands or soles/heels.

IMG_6594

It smells and feels amazing.  You simply need to keep the gel in the fridge to prevent spoiling.  It should last for at least a week.

You may be thinking, “Who are you and what have you done with Mama Pea?”

I have no idea.

I do know that the new season of The Bachelor starts on January 2nd.  And my DVR is set.

All is right with the world.

  1. STUFT Mama says:

Mmmmm… What a great idea! And I’ve been meaning to comment on your gorgeous hair. I love the curls. :) thanks for the Bachelor reminder too! He he! Go Ben!

  2. That looks amazing! If my skin weren’t so sensitive I would totally try making it. I used to spend lots of money on fancy body washes and soaps but I’m so pale I get eczema in the winter and my doctor told me to go back to Dove, which my mom used on me when I was a baby. Gotta love being sent back to the drugstore! ;p

  3. Mari says:

You put the “awe” in awesome!

  4. Sabrina says:

You are so resourceful and creative. People change. We grow and learn new things. You can update that statement in your new book, and show off your beautiful locks.

Can’t wait for the Bachelor! Well.

  5. Amy S. says:

oh wow! this is a fun idea. I’ve always interested in making your own soaps and whatnot but never attempted it since it seemed complicated. This definitely is not, I’ll be trying this out soon!

Does agave offer the same benefits as honey?

  6. ande says:

that line from the book is one of my favorites! right along with “maybe his friends thought I was controlling and insecure. or maybe they just thought I made some pretty incredible cookies. either way, they’d be right.” ;) never lose sight of who you are!
assuming this was a pinterest find?! I discovered the oil cleansing method via pinning (half castor oil, half EVOO) and my skin has never felt better!

  7. Rebekah says:

I love your wavy hair! I think I have the same kind of hair as you – I can go either wavy or straight, depending on whether I want to flat-iron or add product. It’s fun to have the choice, though sometimes I envy people with truly straight hair who can just wash and air-dry and have it come out smooth!

Do you think this recipe would work with a nut milk bag?

  8. Shelley says:

Ah love it, the theme of this post so hits home with me today! I was just thinking earlier that I will not live my life in a box that someone else may have created for me, or I have created for myself. Just not going to do it! Always good to reinvent ourselves, keep the people guessing. ;)

  9. I’m the sort of person that needs an * Don’t eat me warning on body products. I’ve learnt my lesson enough times now to not give in to the temptation, but in my younger years the smell would just entice me in!

Also, I love the new picture :) No dreadlocks yet…

  10. Chelsea says:

what made you go back to your curls?? I love it!!! You look so beautiful and relaxed. And I bet your girls love seeing their curly hair on you!

    • MamaPea says:

Actually, I think it was the pneumonia. I didn’t have the energy to blow-dry and flat iron and kind of didn’t want to go back. But it’s dawning on me the message I’m sending to my girls too. Win win.

  11. Cary says:

I’m going to have to bring this up with Ang tomorrow… :)

  12. What a great idea! A natural, homemade gift for body and hair :) I’ve finished my Christmas gifts, but maybe I’ll make this for me! <3

  13. Deanna says:

I love the idea. On the rare occasions I shave my legs (one of the perks of being single, and in winter), my legs always get so itchy afterwards. I’m keeping my fingers crossed this will help. I would love to use it on my hair, but I finally figured out my perfect hair product combo. I just can’t bare to change it. Speaking of spelling, I had bare spelled bear. Ugh.

  14. OMG! You are too funny. I saw the panty hose in the pic and was super confused… now I see where you went with it, you hippie, you.

  15. Joan says:

I love the way you packaged the gel – so pretty. Where did you find the berry garland?

  16. Julia says:

    Haha,

the hockey sticks made me laugh out loud…Nice one…And you didn’t have to fill the swear jar. Very smart move, Mama Pea! :-)

  17. Love this post!

And when I saw your hair in the new pic you put up a couple weeks ago, you and your straight hair, flat iron stories, stories of Gigi’s super curly hair…I thought about it all…and think it’s fabulous you’re rockin’ the waves. And spending less time flat ironing. I haven’t used my flat iron in 3 weeks either..and I’ve loved the break. So has my hair!

And the soap….looks awesome. And I bet smells divine. That Aura Cacia lavender essential oil you showed…I used to make homemade cloth wetwipes for Skylar with that and with tea tree oil. Back in the days of cloth diapering…ahhh, memories. I need to make shower gel with it too!

  18. flatiron? what’s that? i haven’t used mine in so long that i’m just not even sure what straight hair looks like anymore.

this kid’s going to have one hot mom…

  19. kelley says:

Your hair looks great natural. Curls are good. I miss mine. They are going away as I get older. PS it’s good for your girls to know they don’t have to straighten their hair!

  20. Wow, that is so cool! I never would have thought you could use flax seeds in a hair gel, but now that I think about it, I wonder if you could make a chia seed version as well since they go all jelly-like when they get mixed with water. You would of course, still have to strain the seeds out (unless you wanted to make it look like you had nits in your hair… *shudders at the thought*). And don’t worry, I didn’t even notice the lavender spelling error until you pointed it out!

  21. Carolyn says:

Wow, it only lasts a week?! There’s no way I could use that much gel in a week, lol!

  22. Sara says:

Very cool! Love your curls, btw :-)

  23. I love this post! I am doing a whole blog series on toxins in body products and I love making my own! I can’t wait to try this!

  24. Tonya says:

You are becoming all sorts of self sufficient. Could a post for homemade jeans be next?? :-)

  25. Trailmomma says:

I love this idea. Then I saw you need panty hose and thought “crap, I don’t own any of those.” But really, who does!? :) That would require a trip to the drug store for sure.

Great idea and I love that you are going au naturel for the girls (and yourself).

  26. Some things never change. For example, I willingly go on MTV.com and watch The Hills re-runs…

  27. Cori says:

The title of this entry totally cracked me up. I usually can’t spell lavender either without the help of that wavy red line when I typed in “lavendar.” =)

    I love your blog!

  28. Rachel says:

wow never knew you can do that with flax! excellent idea for college students scrounging around ideas for gifts since we can’t afford them ;)

can you use ground flax? or will only whole flax seeds work?

  29. Mai says:

Ooh, I would love to try this? Where did you get your lavender oil?

  30. Mai says:

Lol. that was supposed to be a ! not ?

  31. i am DOING this!!! thank you!! also making a foot scrub and homemade lotion as gifts. lovee this idea :)

  32. Kat says:

I love this! maybe I will bring my curly back too!

  33. kalli says:

this is absolutely amazing! i just love lavendar so i bet this smells heavenly. i agree with you-we change. just yesterday i bought my first naturally deodorant. kind of scard of what i may smell like later on. also been trading out my paraben containing products for non paraben. i think my husband thinks i am turning into a hippy! so far i am still shaving my legs though-thank goodness!

  34. Bree says:

Brillant! (and I loved that you spelled lavender wrong–I would totally do something like that!)

  35. Ulya says:

Amazing idea! I love DIY beauty treatments (you should try olive oil and honey hair treatment!!)

    Thanks for sharing!

  36. Amy says:

I am so happy you’ve gone curly, for two reasons: I think it sets an awesome example for your girls about loving yourself the way you are and now you can share hair recipes as well as food recipes! Okay, one more – you look great with curls! (I may be biased, though, because my hair is almost identical to yours, just a little longer.)

I tried making flax seed gel a few years, but it was such a messy process, so I only made it once. I had used a cheesecloth-lined strainer, then used a funnel to put it into a small bottle. I never thought of straining it directly into a jar with a nylon – brilliant! You’ve done it again: you’ve taken what could be a complicated or daunting recipe, broken it down into simple steps, and made it seem easy! Thank you! I am off to buy some knee-highs!

  37. I love it! An easy to make heartfelt gift? I’m so in. And I bet it smells like heavennnnnnnnn. *breathes in deeply, disappointed by lack of rosemary smell in my office* And seriously, your hair looks fantastic wavy. My yoga instructor is doing the same thing. I go through phases, and right now the flat iron is winning.

  38. Lynn D. says:

I’m making some right now. Could you tell me how (and how much) you apply it to your hair?

  39. Malorie says:

Love this idea! Do you put this on your hair while it is wet or dry? I was also wondering how are you washing your hair? I think you mentioned that you weren’t using shampoo or washing it or something so I was just wondering… I have curly hair too so I need all the tips I can get!

  40. Can’t wait to give your eggnog spiced nuts for a gift. Or like you said in this post or not give…..

  41. Ali says:

SUCH a neat idea! You are so crafty miss Mama!

  42. Love the curly hair – I can’t believe you’re making your own products to maintain it – amazing!! I had to share that I brought in two of your recipes for my team’s Christmas presents today at work – the Christmas Cookie Dough Balls (which turned into Christmas cookies somehow) and the Eggnog Spiced Nuts – yum! =)

  43. hahaha. YAY BACHELORETTE! At least you haven’t gone off the deep end or anything ;>

    That gel looks pretty neat!

  44. Kimberly says:

you are sooo creative! That would be a wonderful gift! :) Happy holidays!

  45. Sarah says:

What a cool idea! i had no idea you could make your own hair products.

  46. You know, you DO live in Oregon, so things were bound to get all crunchy up in PATY. I’m not even going to tell you what I bought yesterday, but it sure as h-e-double hockey sticks beats some homemade gel in the crunchy department!

  47. I am not sure what I enjoy more about this post…all of the stereotype hippie/granola thoughts running through my mind or that you are using generic knee highs. Genius by the way. I think I am going to grab some for my next kitchen project.

  48. Lynn D. says:

Mine’s cooling right now! I’m considering beating some it with my mixer to make it into a mousse.

  49. I love the scent of lavender and rosemary. I’m not sure if I will make this before Christmas but I will definitely have to try making it for myself at some point!

  50. I love this, what a wonderful idea! Too bad I won’t have time to make as gifts, but I must for myself. :-)

  51. Hannah says:

I’ve been meaning to say that I love, love, love your new photo with the naturally curly hair! As a fellow curl-girl, it fills my heart with an almost illogical amount of glee to see you embracing yours. I honestly think you look so, so, so beautiful (you always have, but there’s a new softness and prettiness now), and for the first time I understand why my grandma is always cranky when I straighten my hair. :P

P.S. I totally have to google lavender/lavendar myself last week. You’re not alone.

  52. bitt says:

As someone who used to teach handwriting, it’s more offensive that those A’s are backwards.

Love that you used flax gel! So underused and it’s feelings are hurt with chia getting so much attention. The flax gel actually separates from the seed unlike chia.

I like the curl too. I was never too into the whole straight hair trend. I never use gel, but I have a brother who does. And no gift for him yet. What would I do instead of honey? Can I just leave it out?

  53. Lol! Thanks for the laugh and the recipe. Growth and change, I guess that beats the alternatives. Hope your Christmas is Merry. I’m sure it will be full of laughter.

  54. ered says:

OMG. Did you pinterest this idea? I went there for the first time today and my eyes glazed over. I mean they were doing everything on there and i saw a hilarious quote “liking your own status on facebook is like giving yourself a high five in public” and then i got off the computer and made myself a pomander (?) (Orange with cloves pushed in) while under the influence of pinterest and now i dont know what to do with it lol…anyway this gel is a fantastic iea. I didnt even know flax seeds did that!

  55. I have been trying to find something that I could make to add to my sister’s Christmas present. This is perfect!

  56. Linz says:

    StuPid question… I thought honey wasn’t vegan?

  57. Michele says:

You look fantastic with your curls! :) Can you believe you used to spend all that time trying to get rid of them?

  58. Sarah says:

Love the new look with curly hair! Being crafty is always fun over the holidays and this looks like something I’ll definitely be making for the mother. I’ve been up to my elbows in butter and sugar making cookies to send to friends as gifts but hadn’t thought about making something not edible for a present….My mind always wanders to food it seems!!! Anyway thanks for the great idea and merry xmas :)

  59. Irina says:

that actually looks really good and so easy to make, and if your curls look the way they do due to that gel I am totally making it. And I read that page of yours just yesterday, while on a long-haul flight, the book was an early christmas present from my mum in law and I loved it, it made the journey bearable and even kind of nice, as much as I hate plane journeys.

  60. Brigid says:

That’s ingenious. I will have to try it out. I love the way your hair looks curly, by the way. Mine is that awkward in-between waviness, but I would love to be curly sometimes.

  61. kelli says:

hehe. well it does look like you made an e there, just an upside down one.=)

  62. blossjoss says:

Just made your Eggnog Spiced Nuts. They are a hit! Feliz Navidad to the lovely peas.

  63. I’m a card-carrying hippie and a major proponent of this homemade stuff. Looks like I have a new project! And leg shaving? Please, I only see the boyfriend once a week.

  64. Sara says:

How liberating is it to discover that curly hair can look good? I felt like I reclaimed days or even months of my life. My congratulations on your beautiful curls! And thanks for the recipe, I’m totally doing it (coincidentally almost out of gel).

  65. Kassi says:

This is great. And so are your sweet new locks. I love the natural look. I have super thick long wavy hair but I cut it a couple years back and started straightening it (yours looks very similar to mine actually). It didn’t take long for me to get impatient. I’m back to the messy bun look. A little hairspray on days I’m in the office.

I’m stoked to try this recipe. I wonder if you could can it so it would be shelf stable until opening? Hmm…

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year! :)

    • MamaPea says:

I’ve read in certain places that you can add preservatives (like optiphen?) to make it last longer, but I haven’t tried it.

My goal for 2012 is to not use my flat iron and not cut my hair (more than a trim). I’m excited to see what can happen in a year!

  66. Leah says:

Mama Pea, your hair looks AWESOME with curl. Yay for laying down the flatiron!

PS The Egg Nog Spiced Nuts (um, “Nog Nuts” as they got called around our place…) were a hit, as were the sugar cookies from your recipe archives–we baked up several dozen to decorate with our youth group and then donated them to a homeless shelter. They were gone in MINUTES. Thanks!

  67. Tamara says:

This blog interest me SO MUCH! But I have some question about it. Do you put it on your scalps or just the tips of your hair? I’m so excited to try this! I hope it’ll help with my eczema/posarsis (possible) on my scalp. Are you Poo-Free? Thank you!

    • MamaPea says:

I use it on the ends and throughout. I am No-Poo for the most part, but Low-Poo maybe 1x per month? I’m planning a post on this very topic this week!

  68. Kathryn says:

I’m excited about this! I’m so excited to go home and take a shower so I can NOT blow dry and flat iron my hair straight. It’s the little things that make me happy. lol

  69. Andrea says:

I’m chuckling away as I’m reading your blog in bed and hubby keeps asking (in between snores) what the heck I am doing. I think I may have to try your curl method. I’m imagining the things I could do with the “free” time!!

  70. Ellen says:

So, I love this stuff and have made it a couple times but each time it starts to get moldy after about a week. Any recommendations??

    • MamaPea says:

Are you keeping it in the fridge? I have heard there are natural “preservatives” you can add to extend the life to a couple of weeks. I’ve read Vitamin E and/or citric acid both work (a few drops of one, the other, or both). Hope that helps!
