Vegan Pie in The Sky (GIVEAWAY)
I was on Math Team in seventh grade.
I’m still not sure how that happened. I was a book nerd. I read books. And not books about math. Unless you count A Tale of Two Cities. See, I‘m such a book nerd I actually said that. Is it a wonder I was bullied on my seventh grade math team?
Our math team, wearing matching purple t-shirts with all sorts of algebraic formulas screen-printed on them, would pile onto a big yellow school bus and travel to other middle schools for thrilling math competitions. On the ride there, I’d read my book and try to ignore the team captain who was smacking his palm flat against my window from the seat behind me, looking at my chest and calling me “Window Woman.” Seventh grade boys are still seventh grade boys, even if they are on the math team.
After they’d grow tired of teasing me, they’d then taking on a more thrilling challenge: seeing who could name the most decimal places in pi.
Ooooh, don’t you just shiver with excitement?
But I have to give them credit, those boys knew pi.
You know who else knows pie?
Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero.
They’ve released a new book, Vegan Pie in the Sky, that is all about vegan pies. If you are new to vegan baking, new to pies or just want something delicious to add to your holiday table, this is your book.
The book covers the basics of vegan pie baking, from graham cracker to shortbread to traditional pastry crust. And the recipes…oh, the recipes.
There are amazing recipes for, of course, apple, cherry, pumpkin and key lime, but even more amazing sounding knockouts like Curried Macaroon Pie, Sweet Potato Hand Pies and Brownie Bottom Peanut Butter Cheesecake.
Um, yes, please.
Isa and Terry offered to share a recipe with you, and being in my middle-school frame of mind, I of course thought of Bill Cosby.
Thursday nights in the 1980s were awesome. And so was Jello Pudding.
Hey, hey, hey.
Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Pie
From the book Vegan Pie in the Sky by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero. Excerpted by arrangement with Da Capo Lifelong, a member of the Perseus Books Group. Copyright © 2011. www.dacapopresscookbooks.com
Makes One 9-Inch Pie
Graham Cracker Crust:
- 1 3/4 c. finely ground graham crackers (made from 10 oz. of graham crackers)
- 3 T. sugar
- 4 T. melted nonhydrogenated margarine, melted coconut oil or canola oil
- 1 T. plain soy milk or almond milk
(or use a store-bought 9–inch vegan graham cracker crust)
Filling:
- 3 c. almond milk
- 1/4 c. cornstarch
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 3 T. unsweetened cocoa powder
- Big pinch of salt
- 1/4 c. semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 t. pure vanilla extract
Preheat the oven to 350° and lightly spray a 9-in. pie plate with cooking spray. In a mixing bowl, combine the graham crumbs and sugar.
Drizzle in the oil or margarine.
Use a spoon to blend the mixture thoroughly to moisten the crumbs, then drizzle in the soy milk and stir again to form a crumbly dough.
Pour the crumbs into the pie plate. Press crumbs into the sides first, then work down to the bottom.
Bake the crust for 10 minutes, remove it from the oven, and let cool.
In a small (2-quart) saucepan off the heat, combine 1 cup of the almond milk and the cornstarch. Use a fork to whisk it until the cornstarch is good and dissolved.
Whisk in the remaining almond milk, the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. It’s okay if the cocoa is a bit clumpy at first; it will dissolve eventually.
Bring the mixture to a boil, whisking occasionally. Keep a close eye because once boiling, you want to lower the heat and bring it to a slow rolling boil.
Whisk consistently until the mixture is thickened, which should be about 7 minutes.
Add the chocolate chips and mix to melt. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Pour the pudding into the prepared pie shell and let cool for about 15 minutes on the counter, just until it stops steaming like mad. To keep a skin from forming, place a circle of parchment paper over the filling.
Refrigerate and let set for at least 3 hours.
The result?
I’m no math whiz. But
ME + THIS PIE = YUM.
ME + THIS PIE + RICE WHIP = YUM SQUARED.
Chocolately, thick and rich. The Cos would be proud.
And now I have another math problem for you. Well, actually, a giveaway.
Times two.
Because Isa and Terry are giving away two copies of A Vegan Pie in the Sky to you!
To enter, leave a comment telling me either:
1. Your favorite kind of pie; OR
2. Your most surprising middle school activity and/or nickname.
I’ll pick two winners at random from the comments and announce them in the next post. Good luck!
Love,
Window Woman

That looks ridiculously good. I must try it.
I love peach pie! And chocolate, of course.
Mmmmm my favorite pie would definitely be cherry pie!
I’m partial to pie although I rarely eat it. My fave has always been lemon merangue simply because it brings back childhood memories of a special family friend who used to make it. But there are so many other kinds of pie that I love as well.
I love apple pie, nothing beats it! I used to ask my mom if we could have apple pie instead of cake for my birthday!
Boys can be cruel, I’ve 3 teen girls who’ll attest to that, but girls are catty- not sure which is worse!
Oh, and Coconut cream.
I love pecan, peanut butter & apple pie! And I’m so bookmarking this recipe!
I love pumpkin pie!
My favorite pie is anything with berries but this could change when I make this !!
Raspberry. Hands down. I will hide the last piece from my children if I have to. All right, the second-to-last as well…
My favorite kind of pie….this is hard. Maybe pecan pie, or chess pie, or key lime, don’t make me choose! It is my favorite dessert.
Making me try to remember a middle school activity is almost as cruel as making me choose my favorite kind of pie. I was a nerd too. Read everything I could get my hands on, so my social interactions were minimal.
I love apple pie. And, my mom has this delicious chocolate chip pie that I can’t eat anymore
ooo… I love all pies, but the most recent was Lemon Meringue. Is it even possible to make that vegan?
Middle school is, thankfully, a giant blur. I do recall my social life consisted mostly of Canasta with my parents. yep. true.
Pecan pie!! Unfortunately, the one pie I’ve not found a perfect vegan recipe for.
My favorite pie is Apple! (and I’m looking for a good recipe)
Key lime pie is my favorite. But I do like all kinds of other pies as well. Mmmmm, pie.
It didn’t exactly turn into a nickname but my student ID number in middle school was 666. No joke. Can I get some pie now please?
My nickname in middle school was squeeky! When I laughed really hard it turned into a squeek! Of course now that squeek has turned into a snort and now I don’t want to know what my nickname is!
My nickname was “Chia”! No, not after chia seeds, silly, although that would have been cool!
Chia Pets! I had big hair, lots of frizzy curls. Oh and Chia rhymes with Leah!
Gosh, I just love pumpkin pie on thanksgiving! I haven’t ever made a vegan pie. So I hope I win!
My favourite kind of pie is key lime pie, followed by lemon meringue pie, especially my dear Grandmother’s.
My prized nickname from middle school was HeShe thanks to my totally hip unibrow
I love pumpkin pie. Sometimes I wish I could just eat pumpkin pie filling as that’s my favorite part.
My TWO flattering nicknames from junior high were “Thunder Thighs” and “Becky Belugah” (like the whale , hardeeharhar…). I was a chubby kid in case you didn’t gather that.
I love cream pies! And I love everything you do! I will try this tonight! Yummy!!
Somehow I missed saying my favorite kind of cream pie…coconut cream pie is probably my favorite– with banana slices on top. Delish!
I’ve always loved coconut pies.
When I was younger (I think it was actually late elementary, not middle school), I had a pair of glasses made by Fisher-Price. I loved them! They were pink and had a speckled spatter paint look. A little boy named Darren thought I was too old to wear Fisher Price glasses and called me Fishy for the next two years.
A few years later, I was finally allowed to wear contacts. It was a big improvement. However, my mom still thought puffed, teased bangs were the cool thing to do. Every single day, she would put my hair in a ponytail with puffed bangs. She used those bands that you had to loop one ball over another to hold it in place. I liked the red one because it matched one of the stripes in my school uniform. I would wrap the ponytail around the ball and hold it in place with a scrunchie. A boy named Scotty called me a cherry bomb. Boys are so mean. But now that I’m typing it all out, I was probably a huge nerd and just didn’t realize it at the time.
I love chocolate pie, apple pie, peach pie, pumpkin pie, derby bourbon pie, banana cream pie….. and on and on.
I don’t think I can choose just one favourite pie! In the summer, I LOVE strawberry-rhubarb, but in the fall/winter, classic pumpkin pie.
That pie looks delish!
My favorite (thanks to my boyfriend) has become Pumpkin Pie! I never liked anything pumpkin while growing but now I can’t get enough of it. Pumpkin flavored latte, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin smoothies, I might turn into a pumpkin one day, haha.
my favorite kind of pie is french silk pie!
Vegan pumpkin pie made with tofu is my favourite! But this pudding pie could give it a run for its money.
Oh, I’ve been lusting over that book. I LOVE Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World and I imagine this one is equally awesome.
I think my favorite pie is lemon meringue. Not easy to veganize, but I found a restaurant in Boston that makes a killer vegan version (Veggie Galaxy, if you’re ever in Boston). I just need to sample it a few more times so I can figure out how they do it.
I love pie! My favorite pie ever is vegan lime custard style pie with Graham cracker crust, soooo tasty! My husbands favorite pie is pecan and he made sure it was the number one item on our thanksgiving dinner list. He often randomly asks me if we have enough pecans in the house, it’s his not so subtle way of asking me to bake him a pie
I REALLY want this book! I have the cupcake one and the cookie one and use them weekly, my absolute all time best go to recipe books! My wedding cake recipe even came from the cupcake book!
My favorite pie is rhubarb – not strawberry rhubarb – just plain rhubarb – the basic Betty Crocker recipe. It’s the best ever!
Sign-language club. No comment. I was a cool one, always.
It’s either Pumpkin or Apple, depending on my mood:) And, well, I was a pretty big Britney Spears fan in middle school, but who am I kidding? I love Britney more than ever now!;)
Raspberry pie. No need to bring out the nicknames. Those died when school was over, thank heavens. Anyways, my school nicknames were nothing compared to my family given one. Ow sweet family.
I love apple pie, but when fall comes around, pumpkin pie!
Looks delish! My favorite pie is blueberry! I used to be a math tutor but I was such a reading geek too! Don’t know how they thought I could teach math! Give me more Bronte damnit!
I love pumpkin pie, especially with a chocolate chip gf cookie crust. I made one for Thanksgiving and it was a hit!
Coconut cream pie with coconut macaroon crust.
My favorite pie by far is apple. Or pumpkin, or pecan. Maybe blackberry. I have to admit, I am an equal opportunity pie lover. Whatever is fresh and in season. We have an old never-fail flaky pie crust recipe here too, which I am working on perfecting. I believe pie crust is an art, not a science. Ok, if pressed, I guess my favorite is pecan. Today, right now, anyway.
Math team all the way. The advisor would buy us donuts when we went on the big yellow bus on the way to meets!
In middle school my friends nicknamed me after the elephant from the Brendan Fraser version of George of the Jungle, Shep. Specifically, they had this eureka moment during the scene where the elephant is peeing on the roses and George yells, “Shep! Not the roses!” True story.
It’s part of my last name (Sheppard), so it made perfect sense name-wise, but I always think back on how my nickname originated – from an elephant peeing on roses.
This is still my nickname to this day… I’m now 21 years old. Yep.
Key lime pie and good old-fashioned apple!
Love all the stories you incorporate! I was in Junior High Choir which was not the most popular, but we did go to state competition two out of the three years. My favorite pies are Hershey Pie and regular ole pumpkin pie!!
I would love a vegan pecan pie!
I LOVE strawberry rhubarb!
I think my favorite kind of pie is pecan… or coconut!
Dear Window Woman,
When it comes to pies, I love me a good strawberry-rhubarb. Or just a rhubarb-rhubarb, even. Seriously, though, the only pies I don’t like are of the lemon and lime varieties. Also, I have been ogling this book since before it was being sold!
Love,
Windex Girl
Nothing beats a good pecan pie!
No offense to Isa, but I think your photo is even more beautiful than the one in the book! How the heck does that happen?! When I make stuff from cookbooks mine never looks nearly as good. :p
My favorite kind of pie is pumpkin. I’ve made 4 this year already.
Nickname: Wax Woman. My last name is Waxman. The kids were really clever.
Omg, pumpkin pie. Nom nom nom.
I love blueberry pie!
I used to LOVE oreo pie from Baker’s Square when I was in high school. My friend and I would drive there weekly, pick up 2 huge slices, and enjoy them…in our car haha. Ohh good times…I need to try and re-create that pie in vegan form! Chocolate (bitter kind…I HATE super sweet pie) is a close second.
My grandma’s Strawberry Cream Pretzel Pie!!
My favorite kind of pie would have to be pumpkin… Or French silk. But gluten-free, of course!
My favorite pie happens to be chocolate cream! (Or pumpkin….or pecan…but never fruit. Haha). This looks divine!
I love lots of pie. Depending on the day,my favorite is either chocolate, chocolate chip cookie, or a really good apple.
My favorite kind of pie, as of this past weekend (when I tried it for the first time) is Funky Monkey Pie. Prior to that it was key lime pie.
This one here looks pretty delicious, though!
There are very few pies I don’t like….but for my favorite…definitely peach…apple is a close 2nd.
My favorite kind of pie is chocolate cream pie but I haven’t had it in a long time because I didn’t have a vegan recipe – so THANK YOU!
My favorite pie is pecan pie. I eat it, at it instantly takes me back to my Grandma’s house.
My most surprising middle school activity was hedgehog wrangler for my homeroom class. My homeroom was with one of the science teachers, Ms. Johnston, and she brought in an african hedgehog. It just so happened that my father thought he could get rich quick by breeding hedgehogs. We had a large litter at home until they all started to kill each other because my dad was too cheap to buy them separate cages. Hedgehogs are fiercely independent creatures that do not take to other hedgehogs. They also bite and are covered in spines. They don’t throw their spines like porcupines but they do occasionally come out, sometimes on your fingers. The last hedgehog standing was a female offspring of our breeding pair that I named Pickles because she loved a good pickle. She lived for five or six years, eating cat food and making their weird purring noise at me. I was very upset when I came home and she had passed. My younger brother gave her an honorable burial. RIP Pickles, I do not miss all your bites but petting your spines down was somehow relaxing. So I ended up being in charge of our homeroom hedgehog for seventh grade.
I just have to say I’m a closet math nerd. My husband proposed to me ON pi day (3/14), and I totally would have married him that day cuz I thought that’d be a cool anniversary. Our original wedding date before we had to bump it up a month was 9/16 because it was 3 squared over 4 squared… There’s more to that story but I’ll move on
In middle school I played the flute with the San Francisco orchesta! Also I love pumpkin pie and CHEESECAKE!!
my favorite pie would have to be chocolate. I can’t wait to make this pie!
French Silk! So I might have to try this one! Looks awesome! Pinnin’ it right now!
My favorite pie is pumpkin! My nickname in middle school was Tid Bit because I was so tiny (short)!
Pecan Pie!! Yum!
When I was in middle school I was in a club called T.W.I.S., which stood for Teen Women in Science and Technology. It consisted basically of me and my two friends and we played Insaniquarium for an hour together once a week. Super fun though… I miss that game!
Pie! Love pie, but my favorite has to be key lime. Definitely key lime. Mmmm…
My husband make an amazing Cranberry Orange pie every year and it was my first year without it. I tried to talk him into making it vegan but he wasn’t up for it so I settled for Raw Apple Crisp (still good).
Apple buttermilk pie! I’ve finally been able to veganize my mom’s recipe, and it is SO good
pecan pie!
My favorites are apple and pecan pie! I just cannot choose between them! I haven’t had either since I became vegan a year ago. This book is a great idea!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
1) i like apple pie… or pecan….
2) i played volley ball in middle school and was really into embroidery, beading, ceramics, tennis… .and skating (duh). oh and WALL BALL/ dodge ball, etc

Pumpkin pie or the oreo pie that my mom makes! YUM!!
Just because I’m good at sharing…. I’ll give both answers….
1- my fave pie is pumpkin…. (big surprise there as I have cases of the stuff in my pantry)
2- My nickname was Tonda Gayle Lattybuck…. yes…. seventh grade boys…. I was a nerd and super skinny and wore glasses….
I love all pies! Is a cobbler a pie? If so, then cobbler (any fruit) is my favorite. If not, then chocolate pie. Like this one. The ingrediants are on my shopping list!
I love sweet potato pie!
Any kind of pie is fine with me. As for nickname, they called me “Jenny Benny”, which the high school boys lengthened to “Been-in-it “(my last name was Bennett). This was both highly inappropriate and completely false, but they thought it was hilarious. ha. ha.
In middle school, I wrote odd poetry. My favorite pie is classic cherry!
Oh my goodness, that pie looks SO good. My favorite pie would have to be pecan pie!
Lemon meringue pie!
Yay for a new pie cookbook! AND, it’s from one of my favorite cookbook authors (other than you!)
Let’s see, my favorite pie is actually strawberry rhubarb made with homegrown rhubarb…yum, yum, yum!
I love my aunt’s chocolate meringue pie! I haven’t had in years.
My favorite pie is pumpkin, and I really should make it more than once a year.
My unfortunate nickname in 4th grade was Lucky Pig. I was the character of Lucky Duck in a school play (pretty much everyone was a duck), and I was not the slimmest. I liked pie. I still like pie, but at least I’m no longer known as Lucky Pig.
I have fond memories of pecan pie but do not have a vegan recipe for it. That would be the first thing I would make from a vegan pie cookbook.
mmm, pie!
Okay, here goes… my junior high school nickname was Rachel “Ball-kicker” [Last Name].
Yep, those kinds of balls. I had them boys scared… real scared.
I love pecan pie! But really I love pie in general so I hope I win this cookbook!
Key lime pie, if I have to choose only one
I love pumpkin streusal or banana creme pie!
I grew up as Tina and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome came out when I was in 7th grade. Oh and my maiden name is Turner – you do the math! If only I had her legs
i was just drooling over this book on amazon!
my favorite pie is key lime.
Oh, Pie!! YUM!!
My middle school nickname was Crotchie. I kid you not. And if you have now busted a seam in your jeans from laughing so much don’t blame me. If you want to know what that means, check out my facebook wall – I did a little dittie on bullying this week and the name is included in there.
See, I need the Pie book to forget about Crotchie.
PUMPKIN PIE!
Banana Cream Pie is the best!
That looks amazing! I am obsessed with Veggie Heavens strawberry cheesecake in Montclair NJ you must go if your ever in the NYC/ NJ area. My favorite pie would have to be apple I am yet to make a vegan one.
Dutch apple… ooh baby. This pudding pie looks amazing- I’d LOVE to try some more of these!
Mmm that pie looks delicious! Apple pie is my favorite, but it has to be cold.
I was a book nerd, too- still am! (That’s probably why I devoured Peas & Thank You as a read before I cooked anything! haha)
Cherry pie is my fave!
And, hands down middle school moments were with my best friend crushing on boys. We were too shy to do anything but play M.A.S.H. and dream about those heartbreaker eighth grade boys
My favorite pie would have to be peanut butter with a graham cracker crust. Very excited to try out this crust recipe!
My fav pie would definitely involve butter…real pastured butter! And my pudding pie would for sure have actual milk in it. I love you for your whit…not your vegan recipes:) However, your dough balls are over the top! Made with butter and a fresh egg! I’ll love you forever for just that one recipe alone! <3
Pecan pie for sure!
Okay, so my nickname in middle school was chelz (pronounce chelzzzzz or chel-zeee) – so so annoying, right?
And my favorite pie is dutch apple pie with the cinnamon crumblies on top. So delicious!
Coconut creme pie:…..oh….and dance and cheer were my thing…..not so surprising:)
I LOVE chocolate cream pie and now that I’ve gone veg I will definitely have to try this version. When I saw the hint yeterday I was expecting silken tofu but was pleasantly surprised that this one just uses the cornstarch for thickness. Can’t wait to try more, would love a copy of this cookbook!
Welp, I spent my Jr High days wearing bright red pleather pants (awesome, right?) and falling down the stairs on my way to the cafeteria. I was that good
My most infamous nickname was Step-on-me Wamp Wamp.
Favorite pie is a homemade apple pie my grandma used to make. Delicioso!
Pumpkin! I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
That book looks wonderful! Pie is seriously one of my favorite things….I don’t know if I could pick one favorite! I guess I’d have to say apple. Although I did try an awesome marionberry pie at the Eugene Farmer’s Market last time I was in Oregon!
O great giveway! I just recently bought their book “Vegan cookies take over your cookie jar” and LOVE IT! I have to be honest and say I have not had very many pies in my day so I guess apple would win but I am sure if someone made me a peanut butter pie I would definitely be sold.
I had so many nicknames …. I guess perhaps the most clever one was “Mosquito bite.” The guys originally started calling my friend “Mosquito bite” for her small boobs but then when they met me they determined that I was more deserving of the nickname….
I prefer to block out all memories of middle school, so we’re not going to talk about that!
My favorite pie is strawberry rhubarb – made with locally grown fruit that I picked/harvested myself! Hmm…may be time to thaw out some that I froze this summer!
They called me 5-head. I had a big forehead. I got bangs soon after. Also, my husband’s birthday is next month and his favorite pie ever is chocolate pie. He wants to buy one, but I’m trying real hard to convince him to let me make a vegan one
Apple Pie – but this pie looks amazing. I haven’t had chocolate pudding pie since I went vegan!
my fave pie is vegan pumpkin (even converted my whole family to it
yea me)
my nickname since like 5th grade Gidget
Pecan pie… then I made it myself this Thanksgiving. OMG so much butter and sugar! Is there a way to make that one less offensive?
Being a book nerd myself, I actually did laugh out loud at that joke. Clever lady!
That looks delicious – I am going to need to obtain this book toot sweet!
Mmm looks delicious…my favourite is apple pie.
Favorite pie: derby pie
Middle school nickname: Puff – I had straight hair until puberty, when it started to go curly. Sadly that coincided with a directive from mom that “short hair is easier to take care of!” I was the only white girl on campus with an afro.
Middle school was not fun for me or my friends. My most common nickname was “dyke”or “fag” because my best friend was an openly gay male.If they could see me now married to a man and mom of four. The irony nearly kills me.Our day to day could have been compared to Kurt and Rachel on “Glee”.Do you ever hear anybody say they wish they could be back in middle school again?
Classic pumpkin pie- and I was in the skipping club in middle schol—nickname= skippy. Yeah, we were an original bunch
Derby pie!
coconut creme pie!
My favorite kind of pie is pecan, hands down and has been for years. However chocolate does come in at a close second.
I have been eyeing that book and it is on my Christmas wish list so what more perfect way then to get it here (OH please pick me)
I don’t think I have a surprising middle school activity, but as for nicknames my aunt always enjoyed Rae-chili…i didn’t like it but you can’t argue that to a crazy person.
Apple pie is for sure my favorite!
My nickname until high school was Betsy. I hated it when I was in jr high. my aunt was our school bus driver and every morning, she’d say really loudly “good morning Betsy” . I’d cringe all the way to my seat.
what pie DON’T i like? lately i have been wanting key lime pie. so i’ll go with that. how generous of you!
my favorite pie is key lime pie, but i’ve yet to try a vegan version!
Your old team captain was a jerk. Your new team captain is awesome (even if he does like Tommy Bahahahama)
I like to make your Egg Nog Soft Serve, and put it in a little personal sized pie shell
Love, love, love chocolate cream pie. Will be trying this recipe ASAP!!
Love your blog and book as well! Cannot wait for your new book!!
Hokey here! (Terribly uncreative nickname, based on my last name). My fave fruit pies are cherry and apple, and my fave other pies are peanut butter pie and french silk. I’ve been in a bit of a pie funk since going vegan – this one looks delish!
I love apple pie a la mode!! My weakness
Horrible teasing in jr high? Check. Awful nickname: Pasty Patsy. How clever of them to point out my albinism in such a melodious way… Jr high kids… Mean!!!
My favorite pie is chocolate peanut butter pie! Oh.. and apple.. and pumpkin. I just love pie…
My absolute fave pie is Coconut Cream…love the cloud like topping, custard filling, and crisp crust. Absolutely delicious. On another note, there is a Mexican restaurant in Houston called Mama Ninfa’s…anywhere, I loved that place and ate there so much when I was younger that my friends started calling me Mama Chels. Hahah!
I love Pumpkin Pie…which was my nickname growing up coincidentally…Pumpkin! In high school I was a cheer leader. Nowadays I’m sorta the anti-cheer leader type…all runner and weights and hard core!
My most surprising middle school activity is being on the bowling team in sixth grade. I’m not really too sure how that happened, especially when I’m so focused on tennis.
Definitely pecan pie!
PIE!
Seventh grade was removed from my memory due to an unfortunate farting in class incident. I Therefore, no memories of activities! I think it took until 10th grade to get over it.
Oh man, chocolate silk pie is my absolute favorite with pumpkin pie being a very close competitor. I’ve yet to attempt a vegan version, but that looks amazing!
Homemade apple pie…or coconut cream pie…or anything with a homemade crust!
Pumple pie, please!!!
I never experimented much with pies even before I was vegan, but I did like coconut cream pie. I’d love to to try making pies now especially since my extended family is STILL giving me a hard time about being vegan years later and they are huge pie lovers.
I was such a loner in middle school. All my elementary school friends changed so much and I didn’t fit in so I just decided to become home schooled and focused on practicing instruments so I don’t recall any nicknames and I didn’t really have any surprising activities….but the most memorable times from that period in my life was visiting nursing home residents with my mom and sisters and playing, singing, and praying for them.
Ah, college has made me an expert at run-on sentences.
Pumpkin pie. There is no substitute.
My favorites would be chocolate or peanut butter pie!
My name is Colleen, and my older brother started calling me “Leener”, which then led to “Weiner”….which then led to years of therapy. HAHA
French silk used to be the only kind of pie I would touch……but now I love ALL pie, especially strawberry rhubarb! MMMMmmm!!
I was in every sport (jack of all trades master of none) and I had a crush on this guy and in the weight room, I somehow managed to pull over the lat machine (1000 lb equipment) because I was pulling on it and staring at this boy.
My favorite is apple pie
Oh gosh I love pie in general but pecan is pretty good. And there was a chocolate pie in my college cafeteria that tasted like brownie batter. It was basically amazing.
I was dubbed “the human calculator” in school because of my skills with multiplication tables. hah.
I do love my mom’s squash pie. It’s almost pumpkin, but not quite (I think better!)! But I must say I made an awesome peach pie this summer with farmer’s market peaches. Delicious!!!
I’ve never been able to resist a piece of Key Lime Pie
And I kinda miss Jello Pudding Pops . . .
Sugar cream pie and coconut pie, wouldn’t be able to choose only one even if my life depended on it.
Most surprising middle school activities, spelunking …. and yes we went caving in full attire and all.
my moms butternut pie! its is amazing and our favorite pie during the holidays
MMmmmmm Pie!! I LOVED sour cream lemon pie, but haven’t had it since becoming vegan… But any lemon flavored pie is Bomb!!
My nickname was BJ. It stood for beetlejuice. nothing else. BJ isnt exactly something you want yelled.
Pumpkin pie is by far my favorite!
I love apple pie… but not the traditional American kind… the Russian kind, called “Sharlotka”!
Would you be surprised that there are even uncooler “teams’ out there? I was in a writing team called Power of the Pen that travelled around the state and wrote essays and storied to compete. Ohhhh yeah… Wake up early on a Saturday to ride a stinky bus with other half asleep children to sit in a classroom and write all day… so fun..
My all time favorite pie is Pumpkin!
Moat definitely blueberry. Made with wild bluberries when we can get them!
I had several nicknames. Most of these were given to me by boys I had crushes on…and they weren’t pleasant. Let’s see…Bible Becky because I knew a lot of Bible trivia because I’m a preacher’s kids…Barfy Becky because I threw up four times in the fourth grade (grapefruit and hot chocolate for breakfast is a bad idea)… Bouffant Chicken because I had poufy hair and skinny legs…Peck which sounds a bit like Becky…Pecumseh because it sounds like Peck and Tecumseh (middle school social studies!). I think that about covers it. And Math Club represent!!
chocolate cream pie. with whipped cream.
i have yet to create a good vegan substitute for the pie part. luckily i can now do vegan whipped cream pretty well!
Coconut custard pie!
I’m totally a pumpkin pie fiend! Now I make it GF and Vegan!
My middle school nickname was, and still is Treen Bean!
I adore homemade apple pie. Warm, flakey crust + tart, juicy apples = bliss. My father makes a mean crust from scratch and I have fond memories of standing by his side (on a stool) over the kitchen counter crafting the pies together.
Oh, I have been waiting for this book to come out!
I love pecan pie and in middle school, my nickname was Gilligan because I wore a white hat on a choir field trip and somebody called me that and it stuck.
Oh my goodness. I would love a piece of pie right about now. It would go so well with the glass of wine I am sipping. My favorite pie growing up was french silk pie from Baker’s Square, with chocolate cheesecake coming in at a very close second. I made a mean chocolate cheesecake for middle school home ec class.
Oh middle school… I think I have a {convenient} mental block of my most embarrassing Middle School moments. In gym class we would go cross country skiing along the farm behind the school. If you could actually stay on your feet, you were able to ski up a hill to one of the Eagan water towers. Pretty cool stuff, but not nearly as cool as math team.
I’m so in love with key lime pie, but I can’t wait to make the chocolate one you reprinted! OMG my Nana used to make a chocolate pie that looked just like this!
My middle school nickname was Mindyken. I have zero recollection of why.
Yum! That looks so good! I love pumpkin pie… anytime of the year!!!
Favorite kind of pie — apple!
In middle school– I played viola in the orchestra. I was an orch dork.
This looks delicious, and reminds me of my grandma’s pudding pie that I used to love when I was younger–I haven’t had anything like it since going vegetarian, so this should go on my must-make list. And I love apple and pumpkin pies!
Classic apple!
My favorite pie is the only kind my mom knew how to “make.” Buy a graham cracker crust, fill it with one part cool whip to one part dannon yogurt (blueberry, fruit on the bottom, or, for some variety, dannon strawberry, fruit on the bottom), stick it in the freezer until set, then serve. Every so often I still crave this pie!
my favorite pie has to be my thanksgiving pumpkin pie. every year my aunt always finds a way to burn or under cook our pies so I took it upon myself to make my own fabulous pumpkin pie!
My favorite kind of pie is most definitely key lime pie WITHOUT the green food colouring!
My nickname in middle school was Giggles. I got kicked out of shop class because I couldn’t stop laughing. He would only let me return once I stopped…each time I got close I re-entered and started up again. I sat outside for more than half the class.
Pumpkin Pie!! Or Apple pie. Classics for me!
Indiana Sugar Pie!
I loooooooooooove me some apple pie!
I love pumpkin pie. For thanksgiving I made your pumpkin pie from your blog with the crust from your book. Delicious!
My nickname in middle school was cookie monster. I still am. In fact, I’m a cookie, cupcake, pie, scone, donut, any.thing.sugar…monster
Mmmm, I don’t think I can narrow down to one favorite pie! Maybe coconut cream?
my grandma’s homemade strawberry rhubarb pie!
My favorite pie is apple – though I suspect there are some recipes in that book that could give apple a run for its money!
favorite kind of pie = french silk or apple
awesome book…awesome pie.
Chandra is an amazing cook (and so are you) and I bet her latest book/recipes are to pie for. Or die for
It’s hard to decide on a favorite pie! I think I have to go with chocolate pudding pie because my mom makes it for every family holiday. Yum! I would love to win my family over with this vegan one!
I love blueberry pie! There’s actually this really awesome pie place in Baltimore that I visited this past spring that has THE most amazing pies!
I love pumpkin pie! Though this post may make me reconsider my preference for pumpkin……the pudding pie looks amazing!
My favorite pie is chocolate peanut butter.
Funny story, I was on Math Counts team in 7th grade. I’m still friends with some of the “nerds”. LOL
Bumbleberry Pie! So delicious.
My favorite kind of pie is Banana Cream Pie… I’m still trying to find an amazing vegan version
Strawberry rhubarb is my face BY FAR. So good- although pudding sounds up my alley as well!!
Yummy Yummy I love pie. I love the process of making pie. Not sure why, but out all the sweet treats that can be made pie is my favourite. Ever since becoming gluten/wheat free as well as vegan I found the pies and pie making process frustrating and less than stellar tasting. I would love to know how to make that perfect pie crust. As for favourites how can I choose, I love all fruit pies, mixed berry, apple, peach, strawberry rhubarb, lemon. Oh and of course pumpkin!!!!
In middle school they called me “sapo” (spanish for frog) because I had big eyes. No joke. It was torture.
I think some good vegan cherry pie would have cheered me up though ; )
Mmm that pie looks awesome!
My fav would have to be key lime.
My nickname was ET…because I was so skinny and it made my fingers look abnormally long
Favorite pie- key lime. So good!
I love peanut butter pie and your Funky Monkey Pie cures my cravings for it!
Key Lime hands down
I’ll take choc peanut butter or cho mint, coconut creme too!!
Fresh blackberry pie made by my grandmother…unbelievable! I drool at the thought…
My favorite kind of pie is apple. Pumpkin is a close second. I’ve actually never had a pudding pie, but this one looks delicious!
My favorite is cherry pie. Mmmmm …
Caramel Apple pie or pumpkin pie!!
I absolutely love pie. All kinds of pie. My absolute favorite, favorite, favorite is cherry with a scoop of (vegan, duh) vanilla ice cream. My best friend and I have made it a tradition to eat pie (lots of it) when ever we get together, which unfortunately is not often enough. If I win this book, I’ll be giving it to her as an homage to our pie nights.
Pumpkin all the way! Thanks PPK for the recipe!
My favorite pie is pumpkin, but lemon meringue is a close second. Great giveaway, thanks.
“motor city smitty” in grade six. I wore a baseball hat from the brickyard 400 NASCAR race. Dont ask!!
Hmm I would have to say Chocolate cream pie is my fav, a close second is pumpkin. Here’s a dumb nickname from middle school years “Reneegghead” Seriously…I think I need to win this cookbook just because my nickname sucked so bad! ha. Have a great weekend.
Pumpkin pie has always had a spot in my heart, but that’s probably only because i haven’t really liked any other kind of pie because they didn’t appeal to me!
Well, your Mama used to call me ‘Kell-Bell.’ My favorite pie comes in at a tie….Boston Cream & Strawberry (alphabetical order of course)!!!
I was on a Bible Quiz Team in middle school… also not the biggest hit with the boys. I remember being in charge of memorizing verses in the book of Luke and having to jump up and state what verse it was or finish the verse. I haven’t thought about that in FOREVER!
I have always loved French Silk pie (pumpkin is a close second).
my favorite pie is sour cherry. though now you have me wanting that chocolate, pb and cheesecake one …
Picking a favorite pie is not easy. I’m going to go with pumpkin.
Okay, you’ve got me: I’m officially de-lurking.
Is it the giveaway? The promise of pie? Maybe. Probably.
But I’ve been meaning to de-lurk for a while. Before I get into embarrassing middle school activities, I just wanted to say, “THANK YOU.”
Thank you, because your blog has been a source of laughter and inspiration in my life for a year now…and thank you, because your blog and your cookbook have helped me as I’ve transitioned into vegan eating over the last few months.
You are so wonderful for sharing so much of your life with the rest of the world.
As for pie and middle school…I would have to say that pecan pie is my pie-kryptonite. Come Thanksgiving, if that shows up on the dessert menu, by default I’m going to have to loosen my belt.
I didn’t do much in middle school, because I was going through my awkward, “I hate the universe and also your face” stage; however, I did get to play the news anchor on the morning announcements every other day. The problem was that our days were color-coded (“Blue” days were for periods 1, 3, 5, & 7, and “White” days were for 2, 4, & 6), and I wore a horrid pair of blue overalls every blue day. Which means that there is somewhere video evidence of an ENITRE YEAR of me wearing the same pair of blue overalls… *wince.*
Oh, KP. Thank YOU. I too wore overalls.
My favorite pie is raspberry, with fresh Maine raspberries in the summer!
Pumpkin pie! Yum
Chocolate pie is my favorite so I need to get on this stat… My fiance loves all pie so he needs to get on buying me this stat…
Also, Mama Pea, you were a hit again! Breakfast night was last night – made a HUGE batch of your waffles for last night and to freeze for Sunday morning!!!!!
Key lime pie, hands down. But I think it’s best when enjoyed in the Florida Keys as well!
Pecan pie is my favorite. No question about it!
My favorite pie is your P&TY Chocolate Silk pie. It’s so delish, I’ve requested it for my Bday Tuesday, and is so easy to make, my kitchen-challenged hubby will have no trouble making it. Mmmmm. Hurry up, Tuesday!
My favorite pie is Lemon! Or pumpkin, or apple, or chocolate, or coconut, or cherry, or…….
Pumpkin pie, but Dutch apple is a close second!
Black berry pie with a crumble top… mmm….
Most surprising middle school activity: taking dares, from boys in gym class, on who could go the longest without shaving in the winter (and we had to wear shorts in P.E. – yay for wooly mammoth legs)
… i just noticed the smiley face at te bottom of this page d’aww
My fav is pumpkin!!!!!! And I thought you were giving away an actual pie. Darn.
That pie looks amazing, and is made with ingredients I have in my cupboard…..but I just got my mini doughnut pan in the mail! Decisions, decisions….
I had a crazy amount of nicknames my parents and uncle came up with: Smishmoria, Spoon, Car Radio, Witchly, square this list and I’ve had at least that many nicknames in my fairly short lifetime.
I was on academic decathalon and marching band in high school and in the public speaking club in middle school….I’d wager all of those are considered pretty dorky, though not as bad as the math club =P
Key Lime Please!
i borrowed this book from my friend ad made blueberry ginger hand pies for thanksgiving.
SO GOOD!!!! im pretty sure ive had some dreams about it since..
I think iv only ever had apple pie( clearly I’m pie deprived and NEED the book!), so ill have to say that’s my favourite:)
First, when I read the line “hey, hey, hey,” it sent me into a fit of hysterical giggles. I do the Fat Albert voice quite often…don’t ask.
As for pie, Peacan Pie or Apple Pie are my go-tos. And middle school, well, those were all bad memories except for the small glimmer of hope when I got “best dressed” in 8th grade; I don’t know what happened after that.
Well I think this pie is going to be my new favorite! My grandma made a peach pie this summer with fresh peaches…it was the best pie I’ve ever had!
Pumpkin pie!! Or pudding..it’s a tough call.
Ohhh my, does that ever look amazingly delicious?!!!
For my favorite pie it is hard to decide between pumpkin pie and creamy chocolate pie… I guess a Pumpkin Pie with Chocolate Graham Crust wins then!
Ana
ugghughgughg…. that pie looks amazing. My favourite pie is my Oma’s apple pie.
Pecan pie!
I was always one of the shortest and scrawniest kids in my classes growing up, so one of my 5th grade teachers nicknamed me “Emily Klee, the human flea.” In high school, I ran cross-country and decided I wanted my nickname to be “Deerfoot”, however, everyone on the team decided to call me the exact opposite- Emily, the thundering mastadon! Currently, my nickname is Mama
My mom’s lemon pie!!
Favorite pie by far would be pumpkin, with pecan coming in second.
I love apple pie
Key Lime pie!!! Or any pie with a crumbly crust! (especially if it is key lime pie with a crumbly crust!)
Most of middle school consisted of people calling me “Step-on Me” or “whispering” to eachother (right next to, behind, or in front of me) about whether or not I was a girl or boy, if i owned a comb/brush, if a blind person dressed me….I think we get the picture…being a poor, fat, tomboy isn’t the best combo in the 8th grade.
key lime! For some reason I’ve always had a thing for it…even though I’m a chocolate girl now!
My fave is Key Lime Pie!
My all-time favorite pie is the apple pie my grandmother made using apples from the tree in her yard. She’d make one for my birthday every year. I haven’t had that pie in 9 years, since she passed away. I’ve tried other apple pies, tried to make one myself, and none were even close to hers. I miss her perfect apple pie.
I made the peanut butter cheesecake pie from Vegan Pie in The Sky for Thanksgiving. It was delicious! Even my omni bother in law was raving about it!
brother
It is a toss up between Tippin’s French Silk and any Pumpkin Pie!!! Unfortunately you can only get Tippin’s in Kansas City in grocery stores. The restaurants all closed : (
coconut cream-could you make one of those???
i as nicknamed goblin by the guys because in 3rd grade as a joke all my friends and i played a joke on a few guys on valentines day, and the guy i played the joke on that i “liked” him believed it was real and wanted me to be his gf. The guys hated me b/c he was one of the more popular guys and i literally broke his heart…
but i was #2 on the prettiest list so they had mixed feelings about me…
My favorite is definitely pumpkin pie with a graham cracker crust! Of course, you can put just about anything in a graham cracker crust and have it be wonderful!
I really want this pie book..not even kidding. man alive that looks awesome.
my most favourite pie is Cherry Pie. hands.down. real cherries, the kind that you use a bobby pin to pluck all of the pits out with whilst talking to your grandma about how she did this growing up as a little girl. that kinda’ cherry pie.
I LOVE apple pie with a crumb topping. Yum.
Thanks for the chance to win!
definitely banana cream pie!
Is cheesecake technically a pie? Cause it wins for me
I’d love a vegan version!
I LOVE pumpkin pie. I adore it.
I have never made a vegan pie though, and I really, really want to learn!
My middle school nickname was horrid! My BFF (literally – we’ve been best friends since I was 1 and she was 4) and I were just talking about it… “joy joy the boy toy” awful, huh?
Oh dear. One favorite? Okay, here goes:
1. Sweet potato pie.
Please note: you have no idea how many other pies I listed, deleted, listed, deleted. You get the picture.
2. Smelly Kelly with the Big Fat Bowl Full of Jelly. I would have taken Window Woman.
This pie looks amazing!
my favourite kind of pie, hands down, is key lime pie! so tart, yet sweet, i can’t explain it *drools* especially the one i had in Key West.
My favorite pie is apple! I have Vegan Cupcakes take over the World, so this would be a happy addition.
1. Banana Cream Pie or Chocolate Pudding Pie (good lord that looks delicious!). Or cherry pie. Oh how I want pie now!
Surprising middle school activity: snow/skate-boarding… Skater tees, ughhh.
What can I say the boys were cute ?!?
Pumpkin, for sure!
my favorite kind of pie is my grandmother’s apple pie, which is absolutely delicious – a close second is my mom’s raspberry pie using her fresh raspberries from her garden. yum.
i was in math team in middle/high school too, but shockingly, it wasn’t that dorky at my school. or maybe my school as a whole was just that dorky that mathaletes were allowed to be cool? either way, it was great!
Chocolate banana pie, by far. I always assumed I wouldn’t be a fan of pie and so I never tried it until my millionth trip to a diner in my hometown (that’s locally famous for their chocolate banana pie), I finally tried a piece. I’m pretty sure truckers have written odes to that pie. It was one of the most delicious desserts I’ve ever had!
Yum! My favorite pie is banana cream – or pumpkin, any time of the year!
Apple or pumpkin! Yum!
My favorite pie is peanut butter pie! Yum! Middle school activity was actuallly knitting. My mom taught me and it has been a hobby ever since
Chocolate cream pie!!!!! ahhhhhhhhh
French Silk pie! I would love to find a vegan recipe for it.
I do love chocolate pie… but my very favorite is Kentucky Derby. It’s basically pecan pie with bourbon and chocolate chips. Can you make that vegan?!
chocolate and banana cream pie! or pumpkin. or anything yummy. now I want pie.
I love my grandmother’s chocolate peanut butter pie. Also in middle school my odd activity was breaking bones.. I broke both of my wrists in the 7th grade.. at different times… way to stand out when when my middle school mission was trying to blend into the wall!
My favorite pies are strawberry rhubarb and peach…..both have to be in season to be perfect! yum…this book looks amazing!!!!!!
I love chocolate peanut butter pie! I need to recreate it to be vegan and then it would be perfect!
Me and my dad’s favorite pre-vegan days was sour-cream and raisin pie… can I make this a request??? I’d love to see a vegan-version!!!
I absolutely love vegan apple pie – it’s simple and truly a classic.
My nickname was “mack truck” because I played soccer and was much bigger than the other girls!
I LOVE chocolate pie… .yours looked DELICIOUS!
I was in science Olympiad. It’s a club for science knowledge and experiments from 5-7 th grade. Orienteering, astrology bees, etc It was actually fun! I also played flute in band.
My fave pie- lemon or vanilla cream with gingerbread crust.
Banana cream pie! My favorite and I can never find a restaurant that serves it.
Talk about nerdy…I was in Latin Club.
My favorite is apple, but I never met a pie I didn’t like!
So, the other kids used to call me Snortney. Even though I never snort when I laugh! Painful memories. On a happier note, my favorite pie is French silk! Mmmmm.
I’ve SO been looking forward to this book!
My favorite pie is peanut butter cheesecake. I guess that’s cake. Whatever.
And in middle school I was in knitting club. And they called me Shrimp. Nothing to do with knitting – I was just really short.
hmm favorite pie is a tie between strawberry rhubarb and banana cream pie! Although that chocolate looks pretty heavenly!
I’m fond of apple pie. And cheesecake. Thats more of a pie, right? Maybe not… On the other hand, anything with chocolate and peanut butter is tickling.
Favorite pie is a toss up between chocolate pudding pie or your recipe for pumpkin pie. I had hard core pumpkin pie critics raving about it on Thanksgiving. This pie recipe is a must try.
Mmmm that looks delicious!
Pumpkin pie for me please!
crustless pumpkin pie! never did like the crust. the filling is where it’s at.
I love me some apple pie. Simple yet delicious.
I didn’t really have a nickname in middle school. I was the tallest kid on my basketball team for 1 year and would just stand under the basket and score. Those were the glory years. I am 5’2”.
My favorite pie is Lemon Meringue. Always has been, always will be =) Anything with some lemon in it and i am a fan.
blueberry!!!!
Pumpkin! Yum!
PUMPKIN PIE all the way baby!!!! And if there is such a thing as a pumpkin/chocolate pie, then it would be that one!!
I love pecan pie.
french apple! and i won the D.A.R.E. essay contest TWICE in fifth grade. i changed schools mid-year and was acually nerd enough to write an entirely new essay for my second round (over achiever??). well….it worked! didn’t even try a sip of alcohol til i was 21. i think i was terrified that my D.A.R.E. bearS would come alive and rat me out.
sending well wishes, really hope you are feeling a bit better by now! xo
Anything with a crumb topping – apple crumb, strawberry crumb, berry crumb. Chocolate pecan is a big winner, too
Pumpkin pie always hits the spot for me!
My most favorite pie is any fruit pie that my grandma made. She had fruit trees that made for great pies! Wish we still shared those times together.
My favorite pie is blueberry-blackberry. Or as my step-mom calls it, blukeberry.
Pumpkin pie! It has been my “birthday cake” for as long as I can remember.
My favorite pie is apple. Boring but
t true.
Oh I love pecan pie! Its just the perfect combination of sweet and salty with a touch of guilt, lol. Perfect giveaway this is, indeed.
Coconut cream here too! My In-laws have a restaurant that bakes them daily, but non-vegan.
.
Middle school activity that comes to mind; getting beat up for my lunch money & smoking cigarettes. Yep, I transferred to Catholic school in 8th grade & been on the straight & narrow ever since
I love good pie, but definitely my favorite is French Apple Pie… soooooo delicious.
and my middle school math teacher called me Nat the Rat. Nice, huh?
favorite type of pie? pumpkin pie hands down!
My most favorite pie is Key Lime! (Though I also love Isa and Terry’s Lost Coconut Custard Pie from Veganomicon. Yum!)
My favorite pie flavor is French Silk! Crazy, since I only tried it for the first time a couple years ago… and now, there’s no pie that I love more. This recipe sounds like it would totally hit the spot!
my favourite pie is strawberry rhubarb!
Pumpkin pie with homemade ginger crackle crust!
Pecan pie! No doubt!
Pumpkin in the winter! Summertime I love key lime or lemon!
I went to junior high ( yea I’m old, it wasn’t called middle school yet) in an area where people would dump unwanted animals. I was known for trying to round up the lose dogs running around on campus. There was an incident where a momma kitty had her babies under a bungalow I went to class in. Momma kitty dissapeared several days later and left her kittens behind. I was the only one willing to crawl under the bungalow and get them out. (three of them made it and found new homes 8 weeks later). From that day on when ever there was an animal on campus the kids would say “go find cat girl”, which soon became just calling me cat. Well it stuck and I’ve been going as Kat ever since.
Cornnuts (nickname, not pie. That would be gross)
Mmmm….that looks good! (I remember watching The Cosby Show on Thursday nights back in the 80′s. My girls and I watch the re-runs on Netflix instant play sometimes. It’s our girl’s night activity.) My favorite pie….it’s a toss up between key lime and triple chocolate pumpkin pie….or maybe strawberry rhubarb….or fresh blueberry. Clearly I’m having trouble choosing just one! :~) Also…have you tried the MimicCreme whipped topping yet? It looks pretty awesome….one of those things on my list of things to try. I did, however, finally find Coconut Nog, and it’s amazing! (I saw it first on your blog!)
My nickname in Middle School (that stuck through high school, and was the name on the back of my Powder Puff jersey junior year) was Pinky. I still remember how it happened: Our teacher had asked a couple students to pass back a bunch of homework assignments. While I was busy chatting with my neighbor, one of the guys passing back papers tried to get my attention. He failed a couple of times before shouting out, “Hey PINKY!” and well, that did the trick. He was pretty hot, too.
Pumpkin pie is the ultimate one in my book!
My nickname that unfortunately lasted way too long was Charmin, as in the toilet paper. When you are in high school and walk out of the restroom with t.p. trailing from your shoe, well it’s hard to live that one down.
Mom’s Maine blueberry pie – there is nothing better!
My family isnt big into pie but i love homemade peach pie!
I loveee peanut butter pie, nothing is better! And not the light fluffy kind, the thick kind. My mom always jokes that she puts cement into the pie to make it extra thick.
I made your chunky monkey pie the other night for a party and it was yummy!! My kids just loved it, so thank you.
Apple pie!
I was in the stamp and coin club because we got free stamps…and coins.
Any ideas for a corn free sub here? Agar powder maybe?
I love fruit pies, rhubarb or apple is probably my favourite, but I can’t forget pumpkin pie – yum!
Pumpkin Pie for sure! i’d eat if it was available all seasons!
Mmm, it’s got to be key lime pie. And while it doesn’t actually seem that weird–unless you know me, my bookishness, and my school that was so athletics-centered that not being on a sports team was the equivalence of having a third eye–, I was a cheerleader.
I love simple apple pie and unfortunately my nickname in Junior high was biscuit. Something I had blocked out until I read this post lol. That pie looks delish!!
My favorite pie is key lime. Yum
Looks divine!! My favorite pie would have to be lemon with whipped cream (when I ate whipped cream). Now it would be great with whipped coconut topping!!!
I just made one of Isa’s pies last week. It was appleberry and featured on the NYT Thanksgiving recipe list. There was only one slice left after the party, and i ate it the next morning for breakfast!
Most of my junior high activities involved writing love notes to boys. This may be a major factor in my stunted educational growth.
After eating it for breakfast for a week after my dad died, my favorite pie is peach pie!!!
My favorite is apple pie! However, I believe if I tried this chocolate pie it may take the running lead!
my favorite kind of pie is pecan. i shall disregard any amounts of corn syrup to eat pecan pie. mmm!
I don’t like to remember that period of my life, so I’m going to roll with option #2. Hands down, no contest most favorite pie in the world is my mom’s raspberry pie. A sugary crust & oodles of berries set in jelly, most assuredly not vegan in its original state, but perhaps you could remedy that?
My favorite kind IS chocolate!!!
My favorite pie is sweet potato pie with pecans!
Mmm, cherry or blueberry pie
My favorite pie is pumpkin!
Gotta love good ol’ apple pie!
Hands down any type of cheesecake! Love!
Banana cream pie! That’s awesome you used to be on the math team. I used to be in Knowledge Bowl and I have no clue how I pulled that one off.
My favorite pie is pumpkin, and I make a kick-butt vegan pumpkin pie!! As for school, I decided to join some nerdy friends, stay after school, and play dungeons and dragons… Just once. I was a poorly trained, pitiful assassin…..
My favorite pies are strawberry rhubarb, pumpkin, and pecan. The lovely nickname bestowed upon me in middle school was sledgehammer. Middle school boys are cruel. I still have no idea why I was called that.
key lime or pecan!
I love love love chocolate pie and I love Isa and Terry’s recipes too.
pumpkin for sure!
I love chocolate cream pie.
And my nickname from 6th grade through adulthood in my hometown is Cookie Monster… Let’s just say there were a lot of younger kids that had no clue what my real name was! If I was to go back home today and walk into the meeting place (popular bar) the old classmates in there would not say “Hi Kim” they would yell “Cookie! How have you been?!”
I may make this pie for my meat eating, chocolate loving father when he comes up for my son’s graduation in May. I won’t tell him the ingredient list.
I love lemon pie!
I love chocolate pie. This looks amazing!
my fav pie is a smores pie
Supposedly one of the first sentences I ever said was ‘i dont like pie’. I doubt I had ever even tried some, so that’s random…But I’ve matured and am in LOVE with your chocolate silk pie from the book. I dream about it!
That pie looks delicious! My favorite pies are apple, cherry, and key lime!
I love chocolate chip pie!
Chocolate creme pie!
I used to cry when people would sing Barbara Ann. Mainly because they’d say “Barbarbar, barbar-berDAWN”. I don’t know why it bothered me so..
I love blueberry pie!
My oh my, that pie!! Mmmm…
While I was in middle school a few of my friends called me “po” and another friend was “lala.” …tellytubbies anyone? Don’t ask me why…I really do not remember. It was middle school though so we were clearly special.
Lemon meringue pie all the way!!!!!
My favorite is pumpkin pie!! Love it, but I also love a good Lemon meringue pie.
My favorite pie is pumpkin pie. I could eat it all year long!!
Growing up in Canada, us kids would walk across the back field during recess to a ditch behind the school. In the cold months when the ditch would be full of water and frozen over, we would take turns walking across it to see who would be the first to crack the ice. Looking back it seems a little dangerous, but it was a blast at the time!
Key lime for sure…but my mom’s apple is a close second!!
7th grade- I wrestled big horn sheep. Yes. Sounds odd. I volunteered for a wildlife program that had middle schoolers help hold down big horn sheep while they were tagged then tracked. The thought was that our age and weight would help hold the animal down without hurting them.

Oh and favorite pie- chocolate which is exactly why I will be making this one this weekend!
Yay!
I love Lemon Meringue- my favorite!
My favorite pie is cheesecake and I’ve missed it so since becoming vegan.
I’m always disappointed by the bastardized vegan versions I find at my hippie marts.
My favorite is chocolate silk! My Mema made it for us when she came to visit.
So my nickname was Brakes Frakes (as in put on the Brakes, Frakes) cuz I fell in the main hall THREE times the first day of Jr. High….I have no favorite pie, because I am pie inept…therefore I am in great need of Isa and Terry’s newest creation!
Favorite pie – rhubarb-cherry – yum! So many people stick with the traditional strawberry-rhubarb but cherries bring out so much more tartness and lend a different kind of sweet that is delish! 2nd fave – chocolate-peanut butter, in any way, shape or form!
I’m not seeing a lot of boys on your comment board. So maybe I can help come to their defense. Girls aren’t the only ones that get picked on, ya know.
While not on the math team, I did have my slide rule stolen from me. Seriously. See, now you know both how nerdy I was, and how old I am
My nick name was Crispy Critter … anyone remember the cereal? No huh. OK, please stop with the old jokes.
Finally, my favorite pie growing up was my Grandmother’s Boston Cream Pie. I’m guessing that would be quite a Vegan challenge.
p.s. sorry, I just realized I’m signed in as my dog Frito. Hey, that’s because he’s got his own blog. Hmmm, dogs and blogs — better keep Lulu away
My favorite pie is chocolate pudding pie! would love this cookbook!
This pie looks delicious!! Need to make soon! In high school, I was in yearbook club! and it was awesome
My favorite pie is a toss up between strawberry rhubard and key lime!
My favorite pie is either chocolate mocha or key lime (made with fresh key limes picked off my neighbor’s tree at my cottage-PERFECTION!). Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to veganize either yet so I haven’t had them in years. I definitely need to get on that!
Raw Pumpkin Pie!!!!!!! Yummmm-O!!! And my nick name has ALWAYS been jenjen:)
FANTASTIC pictures — I want to jump through the computer screen for a bite!!!
Whoa, that pie looks amazing! I looove isa’s books, always so good. I was in marching band…I played the quads (four drums). Enough said! As for the pie, can’t beat a cherry pie made with fresh summer sour cherries…I’m also a fan of pecan.
Thanks, mama pea! You’re the best!
Cherry, pecan and/or coconut cream. YUM!
So…I’m a snoop and I’ve been reading everyone’s comments. I feel like a dork because I hadn’t realized you had a desert section in your book! I’ve been so busy reading your stories and main meals (lasagna was a HUGE hit!) that I haven’t gotten to the “good stuff” yet! (which says a LOT about your work!)
Thanks for your hard work and dedication to this blog! Chocolate, pecan, pb, and blueberry pies are all fab in my books!!
Apple Pie … but pumpkin would be a close second!
Awesome givaway!
Thanks.
Fresh strawberry pie..nothing beats it!
I love pumpkin pie but somehow haven’t had any yet this year…who am I?
I love Isa!! (And you mama pea!) My fav pie is RHUBARB!!! But I love me some chocolate puddin pie too.
Okay, so I don’t have a middle school activity but two stories:
One. I was on the econ team my junior year of high school.
Two. I was so excited for my fourth grade field trip to the natural history museum that I puked the night before and then proceeded to beg my mom to still let me go the next day. Dedication, my friend.
Also. That pie looks delicous. I want to go there. Now.
It’s hard to pick a favourite pie, so I’ll answer the second question. In jr. high school (what we called it where I grew up), I did debate, dance, and was one of the editors of the school newspaper. Oh, and I was also a peer counsellor and did quite a bit of informal tutoring (leading up to several years of actual more formal tutoring). I also went to a science school, so I did a considerable amount of homework involving math, my favourite subject at the time. Honestly, I’m wondering why my school *didn’t* have a math team…
Love pie, all kinds. Is it even possible to pick one? I love fruit pies, especially Rhubarb, Apple or Berry. Chocolate peanut butter or coconut cream are always winners, and I am never able to pass on pecan pie.
i LOVE strawberry pies (yes, that had to be plural).
My sister started calling me booger during middle school….and hasn’t stopped since then -___-
Peanut butter pie, hands down.
Joy club in middle school was so fun- our mission was basically to do things to bring joy to others. I think I should start an adult Joy club…
Because my MIddle School years were a horror movie, I’ll leave out the awfulness and tell you about how I got into yoga. Madre is an instructor, so I started practicing yoga 3-4 times a week in middle school, and continues through now. Magic.
Pumpkin pie is my favorite pie at the moment, although I love apple pie too. Would love to have some new vegan pie recipes!
Pecan pie is my all-time favourite, but I definitely don’t discriminate. I reeaally want to make that Brownie Bottom Peanut Butter Cheesecake, as well as the Chocolate Pudding Pie you posted. Best part- I have all the ingredients! It’s so rare for vegan pie to not have tofu, so this is awesome!! Not that I don’t like tofu, it’s just nice to make pie without running to the store
totally making this!!
Nicknames in high school? I dunno that I wanna bring those up
but my Auntie has called me ‘George’ since I was a toddler, lol
My favorite pie is sweet potato pie with a graham cracker crust and brown sugar brulee on top. I ate half of one by myself at Thanksgiving, and it was worth every single calorie. And the sugar high kept me up for some great cyber Black Friday deals. Double score!
Sneaking out to skinny dip was my secret middle school activity! And I love tofu coconut cream pie!
Coconut cream pie! Middle school was horrible for a braces wearing, glasses sporting, chunky flute player!
Mmmm, my favourite pie must be a good old peppermint crisp-caramel pie….
I love coconut cream pie. I am still working out a good vegan recipe.
looks amazing, very very keen to try out the book! My fave pie is apple – old fashioned much! ;p
My favourite pie is apple pie that I make at home.
Favorite pie? I gotta say pecan.
Nice!!! I was in French Club, and we learned about Carnival and ate MEAT PIE. Ah meat pie. Bleck.
I love banana cream pie, even more when its a banana cream pie cheesecake. yum!
Sour Cream Raisin! Yum, yum. But, really I would be happy with any pi…haha. Mother was the greatest pie maker around.
oh yummi!!
I loooooooove deep dish cookie pie! (CCK has a fab recipe for that on her blog)
Pumpkin pie is still my favorite!
My favorite pie is pumpkin – its even better the next day for breakfast!!
Coconut custard would be my favorite. I can’t recall a favorite childhood activity unless eating candy is an activity!
Hot apple pie a la mode is my favorite.
My favorite pie is definitely okinawan sweet potato with a haupia layer! So awesome and gorgeously purple.
I looooooove my grandmas cherry pie. I have longed to learn how to make it. Man now I want pie
Banoffie Pie!
Ooohh pie! Chocolate pecan has always been my favorite.
Oh I looove lemon pie with a ganache shell on top – perfect!
Love cherry cheese pie and apple pie. As for middle school, I was also mathlete. I loved it. I have come to accept that I was a total nerd. Our cheer in high school was “Sine, sine, cosine, sine! 3.14159!”
My favorite pie is definitely chocolate! A nice dense chocolate. Mmmmmmm. I didn’t have a nickname in middle school, but I had the nickname of “salad dressing” in high school. Had nothing to do with real salad dressing.
Favorite kind of pie – peanut butter or pumpkin
Either raspberry pie or peanut butter chocolate!
Pumpkin or Peanut butter YUMM!
I played tennis in middle school. I sucked!
There is nothing better than chocolate pie topped with whipped cream
I absolutely adore key lime pie. I can just taste it right now. I have had my days with french silk pie (my eyes are rolling back in my head just thinking about the sweetness) so this looks absolutely amazing.
Mixed berries (blueberry, blackberry and strawberry). Of course homemade by my daughter. I’m not a pie baker but would always like to try something new!
You are too funny! Pecan pie or chocolate mousse pie. YUM!
A frozen key lime pie from TJs was always my favorite pie, but I haven’t had key lime pie since I went vegan years ago. Plus now I live in Kansas and there isn’t even a Trader Joe’s. Pity me.
Since switching to a plant based lifestyle I have not attempted pie. I’ts really what has been missing from my life. I might try this later today.
My favorite pie is without a doubt coconut cream! Yummy.
My favourite type of pie would have to be lemon pie.
1) hmm favorite pie…always been a fan of Apple pie. Or anything with chocolate. Or peanut butter.
2) some of my old nicknames are pretty bad compared to window girl. For example, since I was a heavy kid, one of the boys in my elementary school called me shamu. Thankfully that didn’t make it past those years. One particularly nice nickname that did stick was given to me than none other than my older brother and that nickname is twinkie. And people wonder why I used to be overweight…..
Ah well…I’m (thin & somewhat) laughing now. And still love my pie
My most favorite kind of pie growing up was my grandma’s chocolate pie. It looks a lot like yours! As a grown-up, I am a pumpkin fan. Although, I’d not turn a piece of chocolate pie away either .. or apple … or pecan …
Key lime! But I’m definitely going to try the chocolate pie recipe this week!
Apple pie
Love the lead in to this recipe! I was awful at math, but I was great at marching band. Say hello to your drum major!
It’s a toss up between chocolate coconut cream pie and apple pie.
Gotta love a slice of tart key lime pie while savoring the sunshine and ocean breezes in the Florida keys!
My favorite pie is pecan, but chocolate will do in a pinch haha! This looks so yummy!
Apple pie!! THe best!!
1) My favorite kind of pie is Lemon Meringue! I made it once before I was vegan and it was super hard, but came out delish! I really wish I could find a vegan recipe (or make one up) for this pie!
2) My most surprising middle school activity was dieting on Slim Jim’s and AMPM (a gas station/mini mart) vanilla coffee. Yes I lost weight, but also got extremely ill. Never (and I mean NEVER) will I eat either of those two again!!!
Please pick me!!!!! <3
My favorite pie would have to be my grandma’s blueberry pie. She would always brush cream on top of the crust before baking and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top. That was my favorite part was that crispy, sugary crust. I love making these for my kids every year when we go pick blueberries. They request it every year!
Pig-Nose Pope (and yes, I was oinked at frequently)…kids can be so cruel. It took 30 years, but I finally love my little upturned nose!
i am faithful to pumpkin pie
any kind of cream pie, especially banana!
As a true Southern born and raised woman – my favorite kind of pie is pecan! mmmmmm All that gooey richness just can’t be beat!
Apple Pie and/or any kind of cream pie.
Apple Pie…hands down the best!
Love a good apple pie with strusel topping and flaky crust.
I played the accordion!
Hey, hey, hey – I just made Isa’s Chocolate Pudding last night – it was good, but I think I will like this filling more, with the cornstarch and chocolate chips.
Embarrassing Middle School fact: My brother, one grade behind me, nicknamed me “Moose Caboose,” which spread like wildfire through my grade. And naturally everyone thought it was hilarious, so I was called “Moose Caboose” in the hallways, at the ice rink, in the neighborhood.
Too bad there’s not a Middle School reunion because I’m no Moose Caboose these days!
Pecan pie is my absolute favorite! And my nickname was juggs. Seriously. Juggs. For the exact reason you may think. Whoa, I am so glad I am not in middle school anymore!
Oh lordy, please tell me Brett wasn’t the team captain :S
How do I pick one favorite pie out of twenty thousand? (sigh) Pecan, though. Out of a table of pie slices, I will always pick pecan.
My favorite middle school activities included playing a sort of tag on this triangle of concrete on the playground, and also pounding rocks with other rocks into powder. Never did anything with the rock powder, but my best friend and I wiled away the hours with rock pounding. Occasionally, we would also pound grass into mush as well. Don’t ask me why we found this fun. Somehow it still sounds fun to me!
My favorite pie to this day is French silk pie, which I haven’t had in years due to the raw egg content. I don’t eat eggs and I definitely don’t eat raw ones. I’ll try this chocolate pudding pie this afternoon. It’s gotta be close!
My favorite pie is Shoofly Pie!
I think my most surprising middle school activity was wrestling on an all girls team… not many people thought girls could wrestle- but we had a team of about 8 girls. It was actually pretty amazing once I look at it!
I LOVE pumpkin pie (and have made it) but really want to try different kinds
Apple pie of course! My middle school nick name was guts believe it or not
I love pie so very much. My wedding planner surprised me with an apple pie at my wedding. It was fresh, from an Amish restaurant, and amazing enough that I passed up a piece of the 4 tierd peppermint patty inspired wedding cake that I made myself for this pie. It’s hard to pick a favorite pie, but because of what I have since deemed wedding pie, I have to pick apple.
my favorite kind of pie is homemade apple with a slice of cheddar cheese on top – YUM! I like to try and forget middle school
My favorite pie is chocolate pie!
My favorite pie is Funky Monkey pie from your Peas and Thank You cookbook!! I love all things peanut butter and banana!
My fave pie ever is peanut butter pie with oreo crust!!!!!!!!!! Literally to die for!!!!!!!!
I love pumpkin pie
Definitely a fave is a recipe from a relative – pumpkin chiffon pie. But it’s from pre-vegan days and I haven’t made it since my diet changed.
My dad always used to tell me he had 2 favorite kinds of pie…hot and cold. I agree with him! I love pie and have made a family favorite for years that has whole milk & butter in it. Now that my family has been vegan for about a year, I’m definitley going to try this baby! We’ve missed chocolate pie.
Peanut Butter Pie. it’s actually some kind of peanut butter chocolate French silk pie thing. They used to do one at Cracker Barrel but I haven’t had it in ages because of my whole I’m Tired of Eating Food Made with Meanness thing.
Is there a recipe in there for that?
I have an urge to make that right now! And its only 8:30
My favorite pie is chocolate or sweet potato, but not together
My most surprising nickname from middle school… Termite! And no, I never chewed pencils or the desk.
My favorite kind of pie is chocolate pudding pie! Can’t wait to try this recipe, looks very delicious
Happy week-end!
Such a delicious looking pie! Now I’m craving chocolate pudding for breakfast…mmmm.
Oddly enough, I did not have a middle school nickname. In elementary school, I was “Giggles” because I was always laughing, and in high school, I was referred to only by my last name, as there was another girl with my name in our class. How she got to be the one who went by her real name, I’ll never know.
My favorite pie has got to be apple. By grandmother made the best apple pie and no matter how hard I try to replicate it, it’s never as good.
Let’s see, in late elementary school, I was “horse lover” because I went through a phase where I was in love with horses. In middle school, I was kind of unpopular. I would get picked last for sports in P.E. Then, in high school, I became known as “carrot/spinach girl”. Lol. That was when I started eating healthy. I was also a huge chemistry nerd in high school. I even went to a science bowl with the chemistry teacher and we got second place. I remember this one kid in my class told me to stand in front of a bus. I think they were all just jealous that I was smart. But I was the one who passed the AP exam and got into a really good college so it all turned out ok.
Dutch apple pie (with so delicious ice cream on top!)
I want to try my hand at a pear and ginger pie.
In middle school, I wasn’t the most popular or the prettiest. I was also a book nerd. I could read my summer away. In the 8th grade, the most popular guy in class asked me to be his girlfriend. I thought I was the richest girl in middle school. I went from nerd to class president with one question.
My favorite pie was apple pie, but in a unique twist, my mom used to grate the apples for the pie instead of slicing them. To this day, I can’t eat apple pie any other way… mmmmm
That pie looks to die for! But, my favourite is still pumpkin:)
I’d say my favorite pie is a tie between my Grammy’s apple pie (whose Grammy doesn’t make the best pie?!) and my “aunt’s” peanut butter pie… mmm mmm good.
I love just about any kind of pie – my favorite of the moment is apple
AND
I was on the bowling team in middle school – so uncool & embarassing!
I’m… actually not much of a pie fan. XD At least, not FRUIT pies. Chocolate pie is the only pie I’ll eat but it tastes fabulous anyway so… That’s my favourite!
As lame as it is (or perhaps I should say “Fortunately” here…), I didn’t have any ridiculous names in middle school, and never got teased or bullied!
My favorite kind of pie is my mom’s Rhubarb pie! However, she makes her pie crust with lard, so I haven’t had it in a little while…
I was on middle school and high school academic team, so I feel your pain regarding immature nerd boys and their “flirting”. My favorite kind of pie is…hm….oh, chocolate peanut butter fo’ sho’!
I absolutely love lemon meringue pie; my grandmother used to make it for me for birthdays. It’s the only desert that I miss as a vegan!
Trying to conjure up middle school, but not much is coming back…!
Thanks so much for the giveaway!
Favorite pie: Peanut Butter Pie! Fluffy peanut butter filling in a chocolate wafer crust! Yum!
My favorite kind of pie is cherry – I like all pie though (except mincemeat). Lemon meringue is a close second.
My fave pie would definitely have to be red raspberry-with vegan whipped cream of course!
I was a Mathlete! I have no idea how this happened — as in, how did I sign up? How did I sit in neighboring high school cafeterias for hours doing math problems? I have no idea. I was a strong lady, I guess.
This book looks so yummy. It’s on my wish list! My favorite kind of pie is pumpkin or peach! Yum yum!
Blueberry pie during a Michigan summer.
I don’t have a sweet tooth, so my favourite pie is cheese and onion pie – though pastry filled with cheese is not something I can allow myself to eat every day, unfortunately
My favorite kind of pie is anything with chocolate!!! Chocolate peanut butter pies are the BEST.
I like any type of cream pie!
Mmmmmm, pie! Yum! I’d love to win this book – I have “Veganomicon” and it’s amazing. My favorite pie is apple-cranberry. But I don’t sneeze at lemon chiffon or key lime either!
Maybe it is only pie in format, but I miss me a good tart cheesecake.
*stuffs middle school memories back down*
It’s hard to choose my favorite but I have a few. Anything with chocolate
sweet potato, peach, apple, pumpkin.
I’d love to win this book. My favorite pie is cherry. And I was in the band in middle school!
Millionaire’s Pie- the pineapple and whipped cream remind me of my Grandma! Would be very easy to veganize!!!
My favorite pie is cherry!
Hard to pick! I’ll go with chocolate cream pie or apple pie.
pumpkin pie fo shizzle!
I’m more along the lines of Isa’s version of pie, even though I *was* on the math team..
My favorite pie? It’s a toss-up between that pumpkin pie of yours (with the subbed in peanut butter crust) or a blueberry pie!
My husband loves chocolate pie (me too- it’s my fav!) and now I can make it vegan! yay!
I LOVE STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE!
Peanut butter pudding pie! For a while a couple of my friends decided to call me Andy, which my mother couldn’t stand, as it was “boys name”
Pumpkin pie, especially since I tried making it with an oat crust for Thanksgiving this year.
I love blueberry pie.
My favourite is blueberry pie. Every summer we go blueberry picking & can’t wait to make a blueberry pie, amongst other yummy blueberry treats.
I love every kind of pie, blueberry, strawberry, cherry, banana cream, pumpkin, coconut, cream, apple…the list could go on. If there is multiple pies at Thanksgiving or Christmas for dessert I always ask for a thin slice of each kind mmmm.
Oh and the nickname? in 7th grade, water woman! Because I spilled water everywhere while emptying an aquarium at school (after some science experiment). I hate the water , I can’t swim…this is not a good nickname. I also get Ro And Ro Ro Ro your boat as in boat in the water…I don’t like the water. I’m also an Aquarius: water bearer…I don’t like the water LOL
In my middle school, my favorite activities were wearing leggings with flowers all over them under a horizontally neon-striped turtleneck, and spending every school day trying to perfect my horse drawings. And my nickname was Overkill!
That recipie looks really do-able! Lots of regular ingredients that I have lying around in my kitchen. One of my school activities when I was 13/14 years old was being a volunteer swimming instructor…on friday nights. I was that cool.
My middle school activity was hanging out at the barn: riding, taking care of (and cleaning up after) the horses. I also love pumpkin pie. Now I’m thinking, “why did I never eat pumpkin pie at the barn?”
Rhubarb cream pie! But I haven’t found a vegan recipe for it. Is there one in VPITS?
Hmmm favorite pie…….that is hard. I LOVE pecan pie, but of course I also LOVE apple pie, strawberry rhubarb, and all those delicious fruit pies…
Childhood nickname–my friends dads had funny nicknames for me: Hils-and-dales, hillsbarrow, while most of my friends just called me hils. Nothing too exciting there
Tie!! Chocolate and pumpkin pies!
1. Favorite kind of pie = Banana cream pie or pumpkin pie. (I like my dad’s apple pie, but no one can touch it.)
2. I was a part of yearbook in middle school. I’m not quite sure why but I enjoyed the editing of people’s names and placing pictures together to make them look good. Totally switched it up in high school and joined the Newspaper club though.
I love so many pies but the one I haven’t have since going vegan is boston cream pie – and I think there’s a recipe for that in Vegan Pie in the Sky!!!!
Mina
peach pie, hands down.
I love buttermilk pie but also peach and apple pie. I can not choose between those three!
Can you really pick a favorite pie? I’m going to say key lime or coconut meringue because I’m incapable of making either of those.
I was on Spellbowl in middle school….and high school. Yes, I was awesome.
I’ve been wanting this book since it came out.
Before i started eating vegan, nutella cream was my favorite. I also like old-fashioned apple and S’mores pie.
First of all, thank you for sharing this recipe. I love that it is soy-free and I can’t wait to make it.
I had two nicknames in HighSchool: 1) Re-Beak (my name is Rebecca…somehow it got to that) and 2) Heather (anyone know the movie Heathers with Winona Ryder and Christian Slater? I was the cheerleader Heather)
Favorite pie: Definitely depends on the season/holiday: Apple in the Fall, Pumpkin for Thanksgiving, Strawberry Ruhbarb in the Summer…etc.
I’m going to go with pumpkin! It’s my favorite.
My middle school nickname was chartreuse, like the color since my name is Charlotte. My friends saw the color and started calling me it lol.
Chocolate coconut cream pie is my fav
. And in middle school I founded the mathletes and we always celebrate pi day on march 14th bringing pie to the whole school!
Mmmm. My favorite pie is a coconut creme pie! Making me hungry just thinking about it!
I think I am going to have to say pumpkin pie. But I could also go for key lime pie too. Yum!
Awesome!!
I LOVE cherry pie! I haven’t hadin a couple of years because I refuse to buy canned foods any more (due to bpa lining) and I really miss my cherry pie! I need this book so I can make it homemade!
Maple Pecan Pie!
Cherry pie has always been my favorite.
I was a total math nerd in Middle School (and I still am!!)
Oh, middle school. Let’s not remember you quite so fondly, k?
Pie, on the other hand, I can deal with. I LOVED pudding pie.
My favorite pie is chocolate cream, and so I was salivating while reading your post, and ogling the pictures, and could actually taste the chocolate and feel its texture on my tongue. Eek!
All I remember about junior high is discovering the wonders of Harlequin romances, Judith Krantz (Scruples, etc.), and Harold Robbins (The Betsy, etc.). Please don’t tell my mother; she thought I was still reading Nancy Drew, Little House on the Prairie, and Anne of Green Gables.
Homeade Apple Pie is still my absolute favorite.
I love pecan pie! Chocolate Creme pie is a close 2nd!
My Granny’s Pumpkin Pie is my favorite. (Made with fresh pumpkin) I’m not sure if it is my favorite because it is delicious, or because I love the memories it always brings back when I eat it.
I’m a sucker for pumpkin pie!
My favorite pie is cherry!
mmmmm…..pie….. This one looks great. I made a coconut cream pie recipe recently that was based on a recipe in this book, and it was awesome. So I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the recipes in here! My favorite depends on what’s in front of me —- fresh peach if they’re ripe and tasty, lemon if it’s a good season for lemons, strawberry… oh, they’re all good! But I do have a special memory of my grandmother’s gooseberry pie – so tart and so unique, and such a great memory of her.
My favorite is definitely french silk pie! I’ve never tried a vegan pie but that chocolate pudding pie sure looks good
Hi Mama Pea! My fave pie would have to be PECAN… Mmmm.
I just borrowed Isa’s book “Appetite for Reduction” from the library – didn’t even know she had a new one out! How fun!
I love pumpkin pie and that chocolate pudding looks super yummy!! I will make this today!! Thanks so much for the giveaway!!!
pumpkin pie! or pecan pie! or . . . pumpkin pecan pie!! mmmm
A friend in middle school begged me to try out for cheerleading with her so she could have moral support (keep in mind I was the girl who would much rather PLAY the sports than cheer the boys on). I ended up making the squad and she didn’t…very awkward. She was actually ok with it (after not speaking to me for a day or two), and wanted me to stay on the squad, so I sucked it up and cheered. It actually wasn’t too bad (I got to yell at crowds of people and they listened to me!), but everytime I tell people I was a cheerleader for a year I get very surprised looks!
Hmmm… my favorite is pumpkin pie, but only my mom’s (or mine, same recipe) because it’s the best! Oh, and in middle school… nerdy brainy unpopular girl tried out for cheerleading, and somehow made it (probably because there was a very close relationship between the number of girls trying out, and the number of spaces on the squad) which probably changed the course of my life. Seriously.
My favorite kind of pie is Isa’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Silk Pie from Vegan with a Vengeance. It’s SOOOOO yummy!
Is my favorite “pie” allowed to be the pie crust?! I usually eat my pie in layers, saving the oh-so-delicious pie crust for last!
I think I NEED this book so that I can make some pies that have a delicious-tasting “middle” too!
Favorite pie would have to be pumpkin! Most unfortunate middle school nickname – Fartunnia (pronounced fart-toon-ya). It was fortunately not a school nickname it was one specifically used by my brother at home…and not even because I was a child who passed gas a lot…simply because he, as a young boy and probably even now as an adult, thought it was the funniest thing ever to call me that and watch me get all embarrassed and angry. Got to love brothers =)
My husband makes this AWESOME pie with cream cheese, pineapple, bananas, and vaniilla pudding in a graham cracker crust….YUM!
My most surprising nickname was Birdie– haha I was a field hockey player and quick on my feet and one day my friend said I looked like a bird in front of the whole team and it stuck! I was birdie. Whenever the ball was hit across the field–> birdie to the rescue!!!
now i will admit i haven’t had this in YEARS, but growing up we had a local pie/restaurant that had THE BEST chocolate silk pie. i LOVED it. I had to have it every time we went in. sometimes I just went for the pie. not gonna lie. (that rhymes) (i’m lame)
and my nickname growing up was scooby.
no idea why.
i didn’t even really like scooby doo that much. but it stuck.
pumpkin pie!
I love pecan pie!! I’ve been on the lookout for a good vegan version (sans corn syrup) for quite awhile now.
My traditional favorite pie is apple (double crust (none of this lattice crap), warmed, with a scoop of Rice Dream), but I’m a sucker for anything peanut butter, so that brownie bottom pie is on my list now.
In middle school, I was in our school’s jump rope club. No joke. We would meet weekly after class to learn new ways to jump rope (did you know that there are at least 2 dozen ways to jump rope?!) and at the end of the year we put on a performance for our parents. At least 3 groups of girls did their routines to Ace of Base’s ‘The Sign’. Thankfully, our instructor had the presence of mind to make all of them perform at once instead of playing the song over and over!
coconut cream pie!
Ooh that looks awesome! I think I really need to try that, even though I usually prefer fruit pies. My mother in laws apple pie has got to be my favorite
My favourite pie is pumpkin pie!
Ooh, I think it’s a tie between apple and pecan pie for me! Delicious!
Apple probably but I’m more than willing to try me a good cheesecake…
Your pie looks awesome. Banana cream is my favorite but my husbands fave is mincemeat, so that is what I usually make.
Pecan…no…chocolate…no…pecan…how ’bout a pecan chocolate pie?
Whew. I think you have 7 Million comments. This pie looks AMAZING. I almost drooled into the keyboard. My favorite pies WERE the kind they have at Village Inn. Sweet and gooey and so, so, so bad for human consumption. Anything that kind of tastes like those glorious pies and is Vegan is a winner.
As far as Jr High. I was a first class babysitter. Even watched my science teacher’s kid. That earned some peer brownie points, ha,ha. And on a ridiculous side note…Starsky and Hutch were big and I had a large chest and a Starsky and Hutch t-shirt. Unfortunately, Hutch was standing and his legs followed the curve. One of the boys thought it was pretty funny that Hutch had no legs. The boys never hated me for babysitting for the science teacher. Doubt they even noticed anything above or below Hutch. Ya now?
MMMmm pie, My favorite would be chocolate pecan pie. I have not yet mastered a vegan version of it yet though.
My most surprising “activity” in middle school (also known as my years of puffy bangs) was wearing homemade M.C. Hammer pants. Bright red. Yup, I said it. And I wonder why my middle school years were so tumultuous!
favorite kind of pie is definitely sour cherry. YUM!
key lime! (i was on the math team in middle school, too!)
Favorite kind of pie = lemon meringue!
And oddest middle school activity… I was a bowling whiz.
My maiden name is Rapp. Kristen Rapp -> K. Rapp -> Krapp. People only used it lovingly though
Well, as much as I hate to pick favorites, I would have to say my top-pie is a not-too-sweet pumpkin pie that has more real pumpkin taste (not just the “pumpkin pie spices” taste), made with a candied walnut crust to give it the sweetness not in the pie itself, yum! Sadly, my odd-ball nickname in middle school was “Potata.” The story: when I was born the firs thing my dad said about me was “She weights as much as a sack of potatoes!” thus calling me Potata. Kids at school found out about it when during a soccer game my dad would scream from the sidelines “Go Potata!” I’ll never live it down, but I still love my dad
My favorite pie is my mom’s chocolate cream pie!
I’ve always have found a man to get sexier as the more pi decimal places he stated.
On that note-I love my grandmother’s raspberry cream 3.14
my gma’s pecan pie is the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. Period. Plan and simple.
YUM!
my fave “pie” is cheesecake. mmmm.
My favorite pie ever is Lemon pie. I’ve been so excited to try this book!
Mmmm….pie. Love it. This looks amazing. My favorite pie is either the vegan pumpkin pie I made this year OR my sister’s fresh apple pie with cinnamon crumb topping. As for middle school activity, I did a lot of theater. When I was auditioning for a play, I did a monologue about how I believed I was an alien growing up. I told all about the planet, aliens, the secret language…mind you, this was based on my true beliefs from childhood. Yes, I thought I was an alien growing up. Now everyone in my 7th grade theater class knows.
My favorite pie is my mom’s shoe fly pie.. or my grandma’s tea time tassies (mini pecan pies)! And I never had an unfortunate nickname, in middle school or otherwise.
Middle school activity: Cheerleading. I’m as clumsy as a horse. Doing dances and cheers just doesn’t go with my physical ability. It only lasted one year. And I scored some pretty sweet White Puma’s from it.
The pudding looks super yummy!! I might make it on its own
I’m now very intrigued by this book!
My favorite pie is a custard apple pie that a colleague at work makes. It is out of this world!!!
Sweet Potato Pie!! Here’s the recipe – would love to know how to make it VEGAN! http://forums.about.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?nav=messages&webtag=ab-homecooking&tid=20475
I love Pumpkin pie! But a warm apple pie will get me every time!
I would have to say that my favorite pie is lemon meringue, but only for sentimental reasons. Aside from that, my new favorite is definitely Derby Pie…pecan pie with bourbon and chocolate. Holy cow, what’s NOT to love about that?!?!
Ohh those pies look so good! My favorite has got to be pecan pie! So yummy!
Strawberry-rhubarb (my mom makes the best!) – with rice whip, of course.
Fresh strawberry pie in the summertime!
pecan pie….it is my guilty pleasure/indulgence among all my kale stem, parsley, beet, cabbage juices….but since i am still somewhat calorie conscious, i don’t eat the crust and i eat only a few pecans…this past thanksgiving my husband bought me pecan pie from WF’s and there was a surprise, non-vegan item in it and i ate it anyway–chocolate chips….and i eat my portions soooooooo slow….i suck on each pecan until all the corn syrupy sugar is off and then i discard the pile of dejected pecans–but they aren’t lonely, the crust is right there with them…
i did not have a middle school nickname, but i can tell you i was made fun of for having a 5 finger forehead–and i still do (of course) but i am good at disguising it now : )
they make fun of me and call me ewok in 2nd grade…i don;t know how they got ewok out of eva, but that’s kid creativity, right?
I love cold pumpkin pie! I think it tastes best after it has sat in the fridge for a whole day. Sometimes leftovers are better than the real deal!
I ♥ Isa and Terry! And I’m kicking myself for not putting this on book on my Christmas list! I’ve got their cookie and cupcake books, along with Veganomicon and a few of their solo cookbook ventures– all sooo good.
Anyway, I spent a lot of time in Florida with my family growing up (still do), and it was always a tradition of ours to taste-test as many different key lime pies as we could while we were there. So, key lime pie, generally, would have to be my favorite. Specifically, I’ve always favored the ones with a graham cracker crust and no meringue– just really tart filling. I’ll have to try Isa and Terry’s recipe to see how it compares…
Favorite pie= peanut butter chocolate ganache pie from vegan loves you. I get multiple requests for it!
Banana cream pie is my favorite! But saskatoon berry pie is a close second.
My favorite pie is toss up between pumpkin and pecan!
My fave pie is anything with melty vanilla ice cream on top, but recently I had a warm chocolate chip cookie pie… amazing!! Thank you so much for the wonderful blog and the giveaway
My favorite pie is pumpkin! I wish I could eat it all year long!
I think Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Pie might be my new favorite! I can’t wait to try this recipe!!
In 6th grade I was on the flag team. TOTAL LOSER! Now I run cross country, big difference huh?
Pumpkn pie! Any variation
My favorite pie is key lime pie, now that was before I went vegan. I have not had pie since going vegan so I would love to win this book.
Pumpkin pie is my favorite, with apple crumb as a close second!
Homemade apple pie with a lot of crispy crust and a thin layer of almonds on the bottom of the pie. Ideally served warm with vanilla ice cream.
I am a chocolate kind of girl. Chocolate cream pie…MMMMM!
I love pumpkin pie for 2 reasons. First, it’s delicious. Second, one only really gets to enjoy it this time of the year so you have to savour it when you have the chance!
I knew I was signing up for this giveaway even before I read what it was about – the very first picture is so decadent looking. I want to make the brownie bottom peanut butter pie….Yum.
My initial response was going to be key lime pie. But then I remembered my fall favorite is pumpkin and in the summers I used to make a pink lemonade pie. Of course, I can’t leave out coconut cream pie or peanut butter pie. Oh wait! I know… Ooey Gooey Caramel Pie from O’Charleys. Yum! Wish it could be veganized.
Oooh.. loving this contest! If I had to choose, I’d say classic American apple pie is my fav, with a scoop of vanilla soy delicious on top! Merry Christmas.
My last name is Pickett and I was CONSTANTLY picked on for it-they would rhyme it with everything they could think of so that my “nickname” amounted to something like this: “Pickett Lick-it Flick-it Stick-it”….Kids are so cool. At the time I was mortified but now it’s kind of funny, Haha…..oooh and I LOVE chocolate pie or pumpkin!!!!
Pumpkin Cheesecake is my favorite – not sure why I wait until THanksgiving to make it!
Middle school – well, I went to Catholic School thru 8th grade and then to a girl’s school for high school. My Confirmation name was Scholastica – and I did get teased about that one for years!
I have seen this recipe pop up a few times on the web and I definitely want to try it. It is hard to choose just one favorite pie, but I was really enjoying the pecan pie this past Thanksgiving!
Favorite fruit pie is cherry, other than that: ANY pie with chocolate.
1. Not sure I’ve come across a pie I didn’t enjoy
But if I had to name a favorite it would be – a vegan chocolate peanut butter my sister makes – mixing your doughball recipe + one of your pie recipes + her awesomeness.
P.S. she still won’t divulge all her details.
2. Crazy for Cocoa Christina.
LONG story.
P.S. turned into cocoa for a while.
Pumpkin pecan!!! YUM!
Arrggghhh, from about 6th grade, one shorter boy continually called me “The Jolly Green Giant” because I was very tall for my age – something that no girl wants! I wanted to be cute and petite, and was neither. Took me years to appreciate being a bit taller than average.
Growing up, my favorite pie was cherry, and that’s what I always wanted for my birthday “cake”. Hard to pick just one pie now, there are so many amazing choices! Pecan was it for years until I went vegan (and have looked high and low for a vegan pecan pie recipe), and any fruit or berry pie! Peach & blackberry, OMG! I’ve come by my love of pies honestly, as we had to have at least 3 types of desserts on the table every night at dinner (and lunch too, on weekends), or my mom was in trouble with my dad! Our after school snacks were big pieces of dessert, so our house was popular with the kids on the street! (And the people in my family were all thin, and none diabetic.)
My favorite kind of pie is pumpkin! Sooo good! But then again, what type of pie is not good?
favorite pie: pumpkin
middle school nickname: charmin (as in: don’t squeeze the…i had a round and soft, ahem). totally embarrassing.
I love all kinds of pie but anything with chocolate is extra great!
I will do algebra for some chocolate peanut butter pie!
I love all things pie! My favorite would have to be lemon meringue. But chocolate is an extremely close second.
Mint Chocolate Pudding Pie or Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie are definitely the best!
Apple, hands down. Warmed of course, with vanilla bean ice cream on the side.
ohhh I love any kind of chocolate pie…
Cherry Pie. and I was called the Jolly Green Giant ( i was freakishly tall for my age, but surprisingly upbeat all the time).
My favorite pie is a black-bottom, banana, peanut butter pie. YUM!!!

Pumpkin Pie is my favourite!
YUM!!!
I love Boston Creme Pie – if there was a vegan version I would be in heaven!
My middle school nickname ended up sticking with me my entire life (through highschool, college, gradschool, working, and my Ph.D. program). It’s “KY”… and it DOES NOT mean what you think it means!! The only person who doesn’t call me that is my husband… which is probably for the best
CoconutCream!
I like apple pie! Yum.
I can’t believe I’m even admitting to this on the internet but it’s too hilarious not to…when I was 12 I hated my name so I insisted on everyone calling me “Lila”….after the character in Sweet Valley books.
Really.
My favorite gluten-free vegan pie is the Healthy Chocolate Indulgence pie from Happy Healthy Mama (so fudgy!)… But I’ll have to try this one too!
My favorite pie hands down is lemon-meringue, would love to have this again since going vegan, do you know any vegan chef geniuses who may have accomplished such a feat?
Any fruit plus rhubarb will do! Or if someone created a tiramisu pie, I’d be all over that. hint, hint
Aaaaah, a chance to win the pie book!! I’ve been wanting this since pre-release but am a student on a tight budget so I’ve been holding out for a birthday. I’m a cheesecake girl through and through..
As a kid I loved lemon meringue pies…I haven’t figured out how to make vegan meringue yet though
I love any fruity pie, but my favourite is lemon meringue.
Pumpkin pie!! I hated it when I was a kid but now I love it.

I LOVE coconut cream pie!
I love pecan pie!
Would love this cookbook. Trying to make the vegan transformation. Love your blog!!
In junior high, I went out for the track team because my older brother was on the team at the HS and my beloved history teacher was the coach. At our first meet, when they did the second call for my event, I dashed away to the bathroom and hid out. When the coach asked me what happened, I simply said, I missed the call I was in the bathroom. Oh the games we play.
I love Grasshopper pie!! Can’t wait to try this recipe too!
oops I did not read requirements. My favorite pie is Key Lime. Love your blog.

In 7th grade I was in choir and always happy/laughing(obviously oblivious to what a big choir dork I was!!) and a boy I had a crush on called me “chipmunk” because he thought I sounded like Alvin when I laughed!!! He also called me “little Marie” because I was a shorty.
I was on spelling team in middle school…and we went to states.
I’ll answer all three:
1. apple (my mom’s Apple Delight, of course)
2. I won the smile contest one year (no one seemed to know about all the fillings in my molars…ha!)
3. Na-tushie, Na-tissue…..need I continue?
I absolutely love homemade blueberry pie with blueberries I pick and bring back from Michigan. Nothing beats this!
The only pie I used to dislike was pumpkin. Then my roommate and I made your vegan pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving…I’m still dreaming about it. True story. I’m going home for Christmas and making it for my family. (I won’t tell them it’s vegan until they tell me how awesome it is….)
Is there KEY LIME PIE IN THERE!!!!???? I’d die for that book if there was!! It’s my fav pie, next to my mom’s apple pie of course.
I love almost all pie, but pecan is my absolute favorite!

I love anything pumpkin so naturally, pumpkin pie is my favorite!
French silk…..before I became vegan….now it is your funky monkey…..but I can’t make the face as good as you
Thanks for the giveaway…thanks to Isa and Terry too!
My favorite kind of pie is cherry — made from real sour cherries, none of that glop-in-a-can business!
Thanks for this post! (Pie is my favorite dessert of all time!)
My two favourites are Gramma’s apple pie and blueberry pie.
OMG I’d love to win this! Pumpkin pie will always be my favorite!
Apple Pie without doubt. I grew up eating apple pie made with apples from our backyard, but these days I rarely get to eat it. So when I do it’s such a treat!
My favorite pie in the world is my friend Laviyah’s Chicago Vegan Food Truck vegan pecan pie. I could get a whole pie of that deliciousness.
mm..
esp with rice whip <3
my middleschool nickname was Pixie, because i was small and fluttery..apparently..
yeh..
(blushes)
When I was in (the Australian equivalent of) middle I used to be a maths nerd, and taught myself trigonometry from an old maths textbook my Dad found for me being thrown out from a secondhand store. My favourite pie would have to be banoffee cream : )
Favorite pie has to be the classic; apple pie. It’s always so good!
I love pumpkin pie!!!!
ah i love their cookbooks! and peanut butter pie is pretty delicious if it’s not too sweet. i don’t really like baked goods that are too sweet. guess that makes me a lil quirky.
and that pie looks delish! thanks for sharing and hosting such an awesome giveaway.
I am obsessed with apple pie, I could totally eat it everyday.
oh man, that pie is seriously drool-inducing.. so, back in my cross country days the boys used to affectionately call me “wowzer”, not getting into too much detail, but it was because of the way my chest.. umm.. reacted to the act of running.. hahah wow..
and favorite pie? hmmm id have to go with coconut! anything with coconut makes me happy
Pumpkin pie is my favorite. I will eat it any time of year!
Oooh, I love their Vegan cookie cookbook, so I’m guessing I would love thier pie cookbook.

I was “groundhog friendly”! And I LOVE apple pie!
It’s a tie between pumpkin and apple!
My Great Grandma Lina’s cherry pie, made from scratch with only ONE ARM. She was amazing!
Mine is a tie between pumpkin and chocolate mousse. But dang, finally a vegan chocolate mousse pie that does not use tofu (I can’t eat soy)!!!!!! I can’t wait to make this!
Sour cream blueberry from marie callendars. Fortunately, my marie calendars closed right around the time I gave up dairy!
Peanut Butter Banan Cream Pie! My grandpas Favorite!!
My favorite pie… is a pie between blueberry pie, or peanut butter chocolate pie!
Both INSANELEY delicious
Blueberry pie is by far my most favorite!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apple pie all the way!
My favourite pie had always been pecan pie, but ever since I tried sweet potato pie last year, it’s been a really tough choice between the two!! I’m a sucker for sweet potatoes.
i’ll take key lime pie any day, but it’s not like i’d say no to pretty much any of the other pies you mentioned
oooh, I would love a copy of this book! For my favorite kind of pie, I’ll have to go with cherry
Banana cream pie all.the.way!
My favorite pies are either cherry, apple, pecan, or lemon meringue … so most of them?
I looved the Maple Pecan Pie I made on Thanksgiving from Isa’s website!
I was also part of the recycling club in Middle School. And band. I was a band nerd.
My dad just rented this cookbook from the library but didn’t bake anything. I’m not a huge fan of the pie filling, just the crusts
I was just thinking yesterday about being on the Math Counts team in 8th grade. In addition to Mathletes which met at 7:45 on Wednesdays, there was a super select group for “Math Counts” that met for twice as long, starting at 7:00 in the morning on Fridays. Seriously. My Dad would drive me on his way to work on those mornings which was a rare and special treat. We’d stop at Burger King for our special breakfast of cinnamon rolls… haven’t had BK in over 10 years now and probably never will again, but I have fond memories of those early mornings.
I was always a huge fan of cheesecake! I would make at least two varieties for every single holiday/family gathering. Boy oh boy, my family misses those days!
Millenium’s pecan pie recipe is to die for. I’ll also never turn down a good fruit pie- as long as it has a flaky, buttery crust.
my favorite pie is my mom’s peach cobbler, which isn’t really pie, but close enough. So yummy, I always ask for it instead of birthday cake on my birthday.
My favorite kind of pie is apple pie! Love me some fruit desserts!
And I believe I have the worst middle school memory: being forced to perform my clogging routine, solo, in a giant puffy skirt, in my middle school talent show. The song Achy Breaky Heart still gives me goosebumps…
Favorite pie : Red Huckleberry – after 5 hours of picking in the wild, rainy forests, I *might* have enough teeny tiny tart berries for a pie, once a year. Runner up : wild blackberry pie. Apple pie. Peach pie. Chocolate avocado pie… Raw raspberry cheesecake pie.
Favorite pie? Chocolate pecan! Crumbly crust, brownie-like center, crunchy toasted nuts…so good
My middle school nick-name was Chop. Sue…Suey…Chop Suey…Chop. It stuck for at least two years. Much to my chagrin.
My favorite pie? Probably French apple. Although I am hard pressed to find even one that I don’t like.
Key lime pie is my favorite… or homemade sweet potato pie. It’s a tie.
My favorite pie is derby pie. I am still working on veganizing it!
Key lime pie is my absolute favorite, but Pecan pie is a close second.
pumpkin pie!!
Cherry pie!
My favorite pie is Key Lime Pie and Pecan Pie!
pumpkin cheesecake—it’s not exactly “pie” but it’s not exactly “cheesecake” either, it’s just delicious–see Susan Voisin’s Fat Free Vegan Kitchen Blog for the recipe!
Pumpkin. My favorite kind of pie, not what I was called in middle school, most of those names aren’t allowed in polite company.
In our 8th grade year, my best friend and I were managers of the football team. We were both ‘going out’ with boys that played football and thought we were pretty cool riding on the bus and getting to sit with them.
My mom makes a wicked Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie every Thanksgiving and that has always been my favorite! It has chocolate chips in it! YUM!
My favorite pie is strawberry peach. Yum.
Favorite pie has to be a tie between my Derby Pie or Chocolate Chess Pie. Seriously decadent and delicious.
My favorite pie…apple or french silk…although, that chocolate pudding pie was calling my name, hey-hey-hey!
I LOVE pie! And I love Isa too! My nickname in school was Nickles and my favorite type of pie is pumpkin! Yummy!
Nickname = Stuffage…. I developed early. Kids are mean!!
This pie looks amazing! My favorite pie is coconut cream pie, yum!
I love pumpkin pie… this one looks amazing though!!
My favorite has to be warm blackberry pie!!!
Oh my goodness that looks so good!!!! I think this is my new favorite pie! I love anything kind of pie with chocolate!
I love the double chocolate torte from Oh She Glows!
Favorite pie- Pumpkin or Banana Cream or Coconut cream……all pie is my favorite pie. In Jr. High I tried out for cheerleading. I was very tall and uncordinated. Let’s just say it didn’t go well.
I love key lime pie and lemon meringue – it’s a toss-up! When I was in middle school, I figure skated. No funny nicknames, but I have a TON of ice skating ornaments (which I have rediscovered now that it’s Christmas…)
My favorite pie is my mom’s apple pie!
i love pie, its a toss up bxn key lime and strawberry!!! yum-o
My favorite pie is strawberry rhubarb without a doubt!
My name is spelled weird, which basically makes you fodder for middle school jokes. I got called a lot of variations on “cheese” – Cheez-It, Cheez-Wiz, Cheese-Puff… all of which totally hurt my feelings. I later developed an addiction to cheez-its that only veganism could cure. That would be a great recipea makeover, by the way.
Mmmmm.
UM i was totally a math nerd too. like so much a math nerd that i was so ahead in math at my school that senior year, there was no higher math class for me to take. now im studying to be a math teacher! nerd4lyfe? guess so! hehe
Tart cherry pie will and always has been my absolute favorite (especially when accompanied by some coconut milk ice cream…) – - but chocolate peanut butter comes in at a close second!
Apple pie a la mode!
oh man I made some kind of raw pie out of soaked cashews and lemon juice and agave one time … maybe it was actually a cheesecake “pie” but I made it in a pie crust shell so does that count?… anyway that thing was slightly laborious, but I still dream of it. Too bad I apparently also ate the recipe o_O It was that good…
tough choice- pie is so delicious! I would say it is a toss up between warm pecan pie a la mode and my mom’s strawberry shortcake pIe – yummm
Pecan!
Love cherry pie!!! Love you!! Thanks for all the laughs!
People called me “PIssy Chrissy” in middle school. Lovely, right?
Apple pie is by far my favorite kind of pie. Yummmmmy.
My favorite pie? Cinnamon apple. I am the pie maker in the family and I am secretly trying to make them all vegan and not tell anyone – at least until after they enjoy them.
My favourite pie is chocolate! OF course. Chocolate forever. And ever.
Whoa, this is probably the longest comment section I have seen in the history of this blog! A true testament to our collective love of pie.
I have trouble picking a favorite, but I’d have to say blueberry. And it must be served piping hot. (The microwave will do, I don’t expect it be oven-fresh each time
)
Pumpkin pie! Or the peanut butter pie from Peacefood cafe (vegan) in NYC.
Stats girl for girl’s volleyball. It was a consolation prize for not making the team. And really – I wasn’t good at volleyball OR stats!
My favorite kind of pie is this kind, chocolate. My birthday sometimes falls on Thanksgiving so I get a birthday pie instead of a cake and this is the kind I ask my mom to make.
Oh, I was on the math team in junior high and high school!
Love a good pecan pie or lemon cream pie!
My favorite kind of pie is apple pie for sure! But this pie looks amazing too
Favorite pie? Banana cream! No wait, Apple! Hmmm, or maybe it’s Pumpkin? Don’t make me choose!
Key Lime Pie! Then just about any other warm pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream
key lime or cherry… on the one hand cream pies are just a league of their own and on the other cherry is such a perfect classic
Chocolate cream pie is my favorite. Pumpkin is up there, too.
This looks SO delicious and I will be making it very soon! My favorite pie without a doubt, hands down is chocolate.
My favorite and extremely nerdy middle school activity would have been right up your alley, it seems. I was on the “Battle of the Books” team in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. We read books off a list of about 20, and memorized all of the details in them. We practiced quizzing each other every day at lunch. And we competed against all of the other schools in the county at a big tournament where we sat at tables and buzzed in our answers to questions like, “In which book did a young girl forge a friendship with a neighbor over a sandwich?”. We also had matching screen printed t-shifts. It was pretty amazing.
I don’t have a favorite kind of pie, I love them all. One of my high school birthday parties (I was obviously wild and crazy) was pie-themed (pizza and 8 kinds of homemade sweet pies). Everyone also wore pajamas. It was the best birthday ever. The favors at my wedding were gourmet mini fruit pies wrapped up in cellophane.
Chocolate torte has been something very dear to my heart ….that or banana cream ….YUM!!
i’m all about pumpkin pie, but i’d definitely stick my face in this one
I was in 2 clubs in junior high. I was in chess club and sunset club. Chess club was fun and sunset club was a punishment after school for being late all of the time (my older sister kept us late trying to get her hair just right every a.m.)
Mazamorra pie is super delicious!
Pumpkin Cheesecake, and this book has an amazing recipe for a cheeseless version.
Cherry pie or pumpkin pie is probably my favorite! It depends on the season
My favorite pie is chocolate pie
or any pie that combines chocolate, pecans and coconut!
Blueberry pie and spaghetti head. Still in counseling. ; )
Yum! My mom makes the non-vegan version of that pie and I love it, but I bet that version’s just as good, if better
. My favorite kind of pie is anything that includes chocolate!
My favorite pie would have to be coconut cream with pumpkin a close second.
my fav pie is definitely banana cream. My Grandma always bought the cheap store-bought ones and would always pull them out of the freezer too late and they were always still a bit frozen- to this day room temperature pie just tastes wrong!!!
I think my favourite type of pie is definitely lemon meringue. The citrus flavours in it make you think its good for you even though we all know its still dessert!
My favorite pie has to be apple pie.
It’s a tie between homemade apple pie and chocolate mousse pie!
ps- do you think i could use soy milk instead of almond milk in this recipe?
My favorite kind of pie is pecan, and I even have a recipe for a delicious vegan pecan pie!
My middle school nickname was ‘nerd-is’ yeah, as in nerd, I was a book worm, and got teased so bad for being smart. I still have emotional scars lol
My favorite pie is pumpkin tied with classic apple pie (a la mode of course).
Key Lime Pie!
oh, embarassing middle school activities….I was in a marching band! How.awesome.is.that.!?!
Apple pie with caramel topping is sooooooo good! It has been my new favorite pie, BUT that chocolate pie looks amazing too. My mom used to make the chocolate pie from the “Dream Whip” recipe box…graham cracker crust is my favorite. It was pudding heaven.
I LOVE pumpkin pie. Could eat it all day every day! YUM!
Loved your post, and I love the story! I can’t wait to try this recipe. My favorite kind of pie is a Kentucky Derby Pie (Very much like a tollhouse pie), even though I’ve only had it once. Oh, and when I was in middle school, one kid insisted on calling me Gwennie Hennie. Very original, huh?
Gwen
YUM! love Isa’s books.
I have to say, I made a very non-vegan Pioneer Woman apple pie for thanksgiving and it was delish.
In middle school I did ballet and other normal 13 year old things- but I was also really into old (like 1940s) science fiction novels!
My favorite kind of pie is pumpkin. I love pumpkin EVERYTHING. The following is a true middle school story (except the name was changed slightly):
Me in middle school = painfully shy and acne afflicted. I would have rather run and hide than talk to anybody milling about in the hall at locker time. My locker was on the top of three rows. Poor Brandon Parker’s was on the bottom. We were innocently unlocking our locks one day between periods when tragedy struck. My heavy, heavy combination lock slipped out of my hand and fell at least 3 feet, striking poor Brandon square on the head. I wish I could have ran or vanished or exited thru a time warp at that moment. Formerly quiet, nice, young Brandon turned red and tears welled in his eyes and he unleashed a tirade of angry curse words that I had not ever heard before. I can’t remember exactly what he said because I think I have blocked that moment out. I tried to pretend I wasn’t there. I still don’t remember what happened next. Did I say I was sorry? Stammer something? I think I was numb. I still think about it sometimes. Bad Memory. But I also have some awesome ones! Maybe I will share them next contest if I can win the book this time!!!!!
Thanks
My favorite pie is a caramel apple pie. Yum! I don’t think I had any weird middle-school activities mostly because I didn’t do much in middle school due to being PAINFULLY shy. It would take joining the swim team in 9th grade to break me out of my shell (nothing like prancing around 98% naked to break the shell)
that looks delicious & i’m not even a huge chocolate fan!
i looove pumpkin pie definitely!
Chocolate Pudding Pie is my absoute favorite! Can’t wait to try this recipe!! Thanks!
My most embarrassing middle school nick-name was freight train. I like to play football with the boys, enough said.
I love just about any pie, especially pecan pie. But I don’t really eat it, since my family’s version is extremely unhealthy and non vegan!
In middle school I spent most of my time writing a fantasy novel. When I wasn’t writing, I was bragging about my book! But it’s not surprising at all; I went on to study English in college and I still want to be a writer!
My favorite pie is marionberry—it is delicious and I somehow rationalize that it is healthy because of the berries!
mmm pie. anything chocolatey. with rice whip
Ooo, that looks so good! I’m a former debate AND math team member (nerd alert!), and a forever raspberry pie lover.
Yum. My favorite is banana cream pie, for sure
Apple pie is my favorite! I can’t wait to try that pudding pie you just posted… What happened to the post about Gigi? I hope she’s doing ok!
I love to make chocolate turtle pie! it’s sooo yummy!
My nicknames actually came after middle school.
I’m much more of a cake/brownie person as I don’t really care for pie crust. HOWEVER, give me a graham cracker or coconut/date crust and a chocolate filling and I will fight you with my fork. Can’t wait to try this recipe!
Key lime pie!! But this pie looks delicious too
I love me some pecan pie! Please look into creating a vegan one w/o the eggs that is to die for…please, pretty please. Thanks!!
P.S. You’re blog is hilarious, refreshing, and so great!
oh that looks heavenly, indeed.
id say key lime pie is my fave
Starwberry Rhubarb, thank you very much. Delicious combination of tart and sweet.
My favorite pie is raspberry. In fact, I can’t ever remember having chocolate pie so I’m definitely going to make this and I like how there isn’t tofu in it.
My nickname was clothesline clutz. Cause I clotheslined myself on the volleyball net while running laps in gym. It was a massive fail!!
My favorite pie is coconut cream pie. Each year I look for new ways to up the ante on this wondrous dessert for Thanksgiving or the Holidays. This year I hosted Thanksgiving for the first time and I found a version where you paint the inside of the crust with melted chocolate before pouring in your coconut milk custard. It’s always dreamy milky heaven that reminds me of the warm tropical places where the coconuts came from that are so far from my New York home. In the spirit of this blog – It’s easily a vegan dish too! Happy Holidays everyone!
My favorite pie has to be peach with berries in it! My aunt makes it the best!
Lemon Merengue
My favorite pie is a gooey pecan pie.
I have their vegan cupcake book and one of my daughter’s friends remembered a cupcake she had at our house (from that book) last summer and wants the same ones to hand out at school for her birthday in 2 weeks. Can’t wait to tell her meat-lovin’ family they are vegan cupcakes!
-violet
I love apple pie! And, I had thick, curly, unruly hair in middle school. I tried to straighten it…without the right tools. My nickname was “poof” because it’s what my gigantic mess of a hairstyle looked like. Years I’d like to black out for sure.
Pecan is my favorite and my nickname in middle school was …mel bug, mel bell, melly belly…I had lots of them.
my favourite pie is a banana cream pie
chocolate banana pie!
I love pumpkin apple pie
Any kind of fruit pie with the crumbly topping on top instead of the normal crust. SO SO good!
One of my favorite pies is rhubarb– yum!
Pie: that is liking asking me to pick my fave kid
Middle school unusual activity: studying for geography class (which was in French) while in the hot tub, eating candy, watching The Simpsons with my best friend. Teacher always used to ask us if we took a bath with our homework, then just stare blankly when we said ‘why, yes!’
Chocolate peanut butter pie!
And I was on the math team in 7th grade too – and I also have no idea how it happened! Unfortunately we didn’t have purple shirts. I think that would have made it a bit more bearable. And I got teased about spending my weekends memorizing Pi – which clearly I did not do because I only know the 3.14 part. I was too busy reading books!
Pumpkin pie! Close second is the classic apple pie.
My favorite pie is peanut butter! My grandmother made the very best peanut butter pie that no one can get *just right* to be like hers.
My grandmother makes amazing strawberry and raspberry pies in the summer with fresh berries from her garden–those cannot be beat.
Favorite pie would have to be my late aunts chocolate meringue pie. I wouldn’t dare try to replicate it! 50/50 chocolate/meringue ratio, just like it should be!
This pie looks delicious, but my favorite is peanut butter pie!
Pumpkin PIe wins every time. Hands down.
Definitely a peanut butter pie of some description. With salted caramel. Vegan. Sure, I’ve never had this, but I bet it’d be awesomeness indeed.
my favorite kind of pie is banana cream
I want this cookbook! I LOVE my Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World…this would be a nice compliment. =)
Despite the fact that I hate baseball, I joined the Baseball Card Club in middle school. However, on the first night that they met after school, I walked up to the door of the classroom where the meeting was being held (binders full of baseball cards in hand…white, studded, fringed boots on feet), I realized that the room was filled with boys, and I totally chickened out. I was not confident enough in my baseball-card-collecting skills to immerse myself in a room full of baseball-card-collecting teenage boys. In hindsight, it was probably one of my best decisions ever.
My favorite pie is the Dr. Fuhrman pumpkin pie. I made that on a walnut/date crust. Amazing.
I have a rule: never say no to apple pie! Pudding pie’s should be in the same category, just not offered up as much as fruit pies. Thanks Mama Pea!
My best friend’s mom used to make her strawberry rhubarb pie. I highly doubt it was vegan but it was always the BEST.
Ok so since you brought up the nickname thing….
This bully decide to name me Wheels…The sad thing is the reason why. I played tenor sax in band and it was to heavy to carry walking to school so my dad got me a set of luggage wheels for it. So embarrassing.
My favorite pie is anything Chocolate!
I love strawberry pie… truly love it.
Vegan pie would be great to try for my boyfriend too, since he is a recent convert.
Your vegan pumpkin pie!
I LOVE key lime pie and I’d LOVE this book. I’ve actually made a key lime pie from scratch, juicing those hard as a golfball little limes wasn’t my brightest hour, neither was squeezing the juice through a coffee filter to get out all of the seeds only to have all of that precious juice end up down my shirt. I smelled like a tequilla shot for the rest of the day.
Nickname big M, little Organ. (Would’ve sucked a lot more if I were male).
I love coconut cream pie! I just wish the rest of my family did too! Usually we stick with a fruit pie since that is what everyone likes most.
I love coconut cream pie with a shortbread crust drizzled in chocolate…SO good.
i was going to make your lemon lentil soup but i dont have cashews. Do you think I could use almonds or something else?? Help! It looks so good.
Raw almonds might work but you’d probably want to soak them. You could just omit the cashews and it’d still be tasty!
I love all kinds of pie, but my very favourite is super sweet pecan pie. And pumpkin pie. Ok I can’t really choose. Which is why I need this book.
My favorite is a really good apple pie where the apples are just a tad crispy. This book looks fantastic. Hope I win! Thanks for the giveaway and thanks to the authors for allowing you to post the recipe. Yum to the pi!
my favorite pie is a vegan pumpkin cheesecake we make for thanksgiving every year.
chocolate pie or mixed berry!!!
Pumpkin pie or chocolate pie for me please
I love coconut cream pie and strawberry rhubarb!
My favorite kinds of pie are chocolate and key lime (but not together)!
i love pumpkin pie, apple pie, and chocolate pie
i couldn’t pick just one
my middle school nickname was Squirrel
I think my favourite pie has to be rhubarb – it brings back so many memories of my childhood!!
Pumpkin pie of course!! Although my step-dad makes a MEAN blueberry pie…it runs a close second. Not vegan nor nutritious, but oh so yummy!
my favorite pie… depends on the day, but coconut cream! And i’m going to tell you two wierd nicknames… 1) Elizabeethon and 2) “the other half of the embryo”
I like cherry pie!
My fav. is strawberry-rhubarb…delish!! Thanks:)
Erin
When I was in high school, my friends became obsessed with what everyone’s name was when spelled backwards. Mine was “Irol Ppits”, pronounced as “I roll pits”. Not sure of the actual meaning, but it sure didn’t sound flattering. I haven’t met very many pies I haven’t liked, but key lime is probably my favorite!
Mine was “Narf.” But I liked it, since it was Pinky’s trademark slogan (of Pinky and The Brain). Ah, I miss Animaniacs…
Animaniacs was way after my time. Back int he stone age, we kids had to generate our own nicknames by spelling names backwards. You young whippersnappers!
