Ten Things From Halloween

IMG_4503

1.  This is not a “Three-Eyed Pumpkin.”  This is a pea pod carved into a pumpkin.  Yes, it’s terrible, but that’s why I don’t carve pumpkins.  I just complain about carving pumpkins.  I’m good at it.  I joined the pro circuit in 2005.

2.  I’ve had a bag of candy on top of our refrigerator for a week.  Lulu saw it yesterday and said, “If you bring that candy down here, I’mgoingtoeateverysinglepiecerightup!”  She said it just like that, without breathing.  And that is why the candy was on top of the refrigerator for a week.

3.  The only thing better than getting a puppy is being a puppy.

IMG_4500

4.  I’ve worn the same orange shirt for the past three Halloweens in a row.  I’m pretty sure I haven’t even washed it.  I’d buy a new shirt, but I look awful in orange.  I was forced to wear orange in high school because it was our school color.  Because of this, my brother couldn’t even pay someone to date me.  I’m sure it was that.

5.  I said a prayer of thanks this morning that I do not have to take a Disney princess door-to-door.  Nothing against Cinderella, but I couldn’t take it anymore.  It’s not the “I need a prince” mentality that was wearing on my nerves, it was the shuffling of oversized plastic heels down wet pavement.  A dream is a wish your heart makes.  And this year, my dream came true.

IMG_4144

6.  It is physically impossible for my children to be in the presence of a camera and not put a hand on their hips and stick their foot out.  They did not inherit this from me.  Pea Daddy poses something fierce.

IMG_4136

7.  Our next door neighbor boy, to his mom’s dismay, dressed up as a toilet.  He must have had a change of heart when Lulu tried to drink out of him, because I saw him later in his back-up costume: a fried egg.

8.  Every year I make a big pot of chili or stew for Halloween dinner—something to warm our bellies before we head out into the night.  Every year no one eats it because they are in too much of a hurry to go trick-or-treating.  I quit.

IMG_4514

9.  We went trick-or-treating before dinner this year, collecting dried peaches at one house and Ghiradelli squares at another.  I think we’re being typecast.

10.  We traipsed around the neighborhood until it got dark.  We squished home in wet shoes and ate hot dogs and Ghiradelli squares.  I hope Pea Daddy hides the rest of the chocolate on top of the fridge.  Because if he doesn’t “I’mgoingtoeateverysinglepiecerightup!”

Without breathing.

Or changing my orange shirt.

  1. Aww what a wonderful Halloween your family had! I’m so glad you got to enjoy it, and your girl’s costumes were precious! Houses gave out dried peaches and Ghiradelli squares? You have some awesome neighbors! Happy Halloween!

  2. Jessica says:

Hahaha! What a fun ‘Ween! We’re still handing out candy here in Alaska (it’s only almost 8pm here), and most kids get driven around, considering it’s 25 out and supposed to snow any minute. Made your tempeh chili, and realized that tempeh chili is much more filling from the tempeh-bean combo. Loved the lime tahini dressing–planning to use it on some lettuce wraps later this week.

Sipping some tea to warm our hands–they get cold when we have to open the door constantly for the kiddos. #grownupnokidsproblems

  3. Marina says:

Aww, bless them, they look so cute! :) When I was Gigi’s age I wanted to be a “pirate” too! And I love Lulu’s obsession with puppies!

  4. I traipsed around the mall with Skylar in full Disney princess attire; her request, fourth year in a row. I offered 17 other costume options just in case, but no, that’s what she wanted to be and I love her in her princess attire.

We live urban so door-to-door trick or treating with the high rise buildings isn’t really easy so we go to the local mall where the stores pass out candy and came home with a giant pink bag full of candy.

I’m glad you guys had a fun night!

  5. I’ve heard of a lot of toilet costumes this year! I just don’t get it!

  6. Roanne Seguin says:

Your girls are way too cute! :D

  7. Ali says:

A toilet costume is the most amazing thing I have ever heard of! I wish I were dressed as a toilet. Your children are the most adorable in the world as well, as I am sure you are well aware. Happy Halloween and hot dog night!!

  8. hippierunner says:

Most adorable puppy and pirate I’ve seen all night! :) And I saw a looooot of kids in costumes!

  9. Shayna says:

My husband *wanted* to hand out my Ghiradelli chocolates, prompting me to go, “Are you out of your mind?!?! I’m not handing the good stuff out!!!”
Kids never come by our house so we weren’t prepared! I’ve resorted to handing out pineapple Crush that we had lying around. The husband was embarrassed until one kid hollered, “Cool guys! We got drinks!” Thank God I’m resourceful…and a genius.

  10. Really, a toilet!? I somehow escaped having ANY halloween candy this year. It might be on account of living in NYC in an apartment building and/or not having children… but I could really go for a mini kit kat or milky way right now!!

    • MamaPea says:

Honestly, I’d say try to track down a mini bar. I had this all built up in my head and then had a bite of a few pieces that Pea D was chomping on (it doesn’t count if you just have a bite…) and it was a total letdown. Candy isn’t as good as you remember it. :)

  11. Sarah says:

My schools colors were orange and yellow. Orange is just such an awful color.

  12. Susan says:

I just googled what a toilet costume looks like cuz I could not picture it. :-)
Gigi and Lulu look simply adorable in their costumes! I love handing out candy mainly so I get to ooh and aww over the costumes of the little ones.
My husband, who’s a high school teacher, told me that the 3 best reasons he heard today from kids for not wearing costumes were:
    1. I’m dressed as a muggle
    2. I’m a nudist on strike
    3. I got here on time, what more do you want from me?

    Happy Halloween to you all!

  13. Marion says:

Your girls are just too adorable! And yes orange is a questionable colour at best:) oh and please tell me how you make candy last a week on top of your fridge?! If there is chocolate in my house it will be gone within 24 hours- my excuse is breastfeeding ( i know, what am I thinking she is 2!) but my husband he is the real criminal…;)

  14. Lou says:

I thought the pea pod pumpkin was a cute alien with 3 eyes – either way I reckon it’s cute! The toilet costume is brilliant, just brilliant. If we celebrated Halloween over here, I would totally go as a toilet (my name is Lou, ‘Loo’ being another word for toilet, ha)

  15. I “forgot” to buy halloween candy for the neighborhood trick or treaters this year so I went with the whole all the lights are off and blinds are closed we are not home theory… didn’t work. People were still ringing the door bell…and yelling at the house “got any candy?” I was tempted to hand out baggies of prunes ;)

    • MamaPea says:

Really?! People can be RUDE! I was pretty excited, though, when the pack of teenage boys came to the door and started yelling “MILF” under their breath, like they were clearing their throats. ;)

  16. Their costumes are too adorable!! I hope you had a great night :D

  17. I am glad I wasn’t the only one who did get the pea at first. Right? Your daughters are adorable. I would go with the princess costume and still where the comfy boots. Orange is an awful color on me too. Keep the old shirt…no one will notice.

  18. we took my son “trick or treating” for the first time last night (is 15 months)… we just went to a couple family/friends house. It was so much fun to watch him though!! Then he came home and passed out in his little frog costume.

I wish we would have gotten some dried peaches and Ghiradelli! Instead we have a ton of smarties and kit kats that will be following my husband to work all week.

  19. Lauren says:

Haha, I love the girls costumes! So cute that they know how to pose already. They must just be so used to being behind the camera. Glad you had a great night! :)

  20. Katie says:

I see the “pea” now with the pumpkin, but it still can look like a 3 eyed alien too, ha! I have no pumpkin carving skills, so I will not talk! I was watching Food Network and they had a pumpkin carving halloween challenge thing, you should of seen these pumpkins! These people had awesome talent, it was crazy!

The kids look so cute! Glad they had fun!

    Happy Tuesday! xoxo <3

  21. The girls looked great!!! And I’m with you on the orange…can anyone really pull it off??

  22. TwoDiffSocks says:

there is absolutely nothing wrong with a 3 eyed pumpkin…its makes the 2 eyed pumpkins jealous ;p Happy Halloween!

  23. Basil wanted to be a Disney princess too. He was a turtle. with a back up submarine costume.

  24. Heather Blake says:

    What cuties the girls are!

What Ghirardelli squares don’t have milk fat? All I’ve seen aren’t vegan?

    • MamaPea says:

      1. The really dark chocolate squares don’t.
2 I am (for better or worse in some people’s eyes) pretty flexible when it comes to trace amounts of dairy in things…especially on occasions like holidays, travelling etc. None of us are perfect and I stopped trying to be a long time ago! (PS This is nothing personal against you for asking–just something I wanted to clairify)

  25. It’s funny because the Husband does that same hand on the hip pose when we take pictures. It must be a guy thing.

And I hid our halloween candy in my trunk. Not great for me, but John sure has some sneaky tactics when it comes to candy eating. I had to hide it.

  26. Heather says:

That picture of Lulu laughing is gold. Your girls are precious. …and a toliet? Really? Kids these days! ;-)

This year for Halloween, my boyfriend and I went as Bret Michaels: Past and Present See here: http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/310403_2121185269398_1238790046_31902242_378042231_n.jpg

  27. Christine says:

Sorry, I was one of the ones who thought it had three eyes….I see the pea pod now…durrr….

The girls look adorable! Glad your dream came true! :-)

  28. i think the toilet thing is kind of genius…you KNOW that kid was the only toilet on the block!

  29. Emily says:

hope they had fun! that is t000 funny that Lulu tried to drink out of the toilet. she cracks me up

  30. Kayla says:

Trick or treating was also a success here in the ‘Burgh. I knew I had a narrow window to put actual food into Bebe so I made soyball sandwiches and roasted garlic potato wedges. It worked thank goodness because I also distracted her with the awesomeness that is “Garfield’s Halloween Adventure” on youtube. I loved that special so much as a kid. We had it on tape and I lost it when I found out someone had taped over it!!! Thank goodness for the internets.

  31. I’m just going to pretend that the pumpkin is a three-eyed pumpkin because it makes me smile. And that dog costume is the most adorable costume I’ve seen this year!

  32. Lys R says:

Hahaha, a toilet?! Amazing! I’ve seen microwaves and fridges, but not a toilet since I was 10. Yes, our neighbor boy was also that kinda kid. My favorite last year though was when a friend dressed up as from Alan the Hangover. Complete with “not a man purse, a satchel” (hello, “Indiana Jones wears one”) mustache and white pants. Epic.

  33. island girl says:

LOL…ohhhh, this made me laugh! I don’t comment often but, very much enjoy your daily facebook(and twitter) posts! Happy Autumn to you and your Peas! ;)

  34. LOL! The girls are so cute! I would have loved to see the boy’s toilet costume. Has there ever been a Pea dressed as a pickle for Halloween? ;)

  35. Kath says:

I have to say, I totally thought that pumpkin was a 3-eyed monster. But nowwww it makes sense ;)

    LOVE this post’s writing!

  36. Alison says:

    Ten comments about this post:

    1. I totally see the pea pod now! I totally thought you were going for those alien guys from the toy machine in Toy Story:

    http://www.dan-dare.org/FreeFun/Images/CartoonsMoviesTV/ToyStory2Wallpaper3800.jpg

    2. I went as “A Photographer” yesterday, the same thing I’ve gone as forthelastthreeyears!!!

    3. OK, that’s only two comments (well, now three). Oh well, I gave it a good shot.

  37. The girls look so cute!!! Love the pea pod pumpkin. Happ Halloween!!!

  38. Rebecca says:

    Loove the girls’ costumes!!
Those dried peaches must have been meant for the toilet. You know to keep him regular… :P

  39. Dalai Lina says:

I think your pea pod is perfect! (Although I did think it was a creature from Monsters Inc.)

  40. The girls’ costumes are TOO CUTE!!

  41. I’m sorry for thinking your pumpkin was a three-eyed alien.
Love the puppy dog costume!! She would have gotten 2 pieces of candy from me!

  42. They look great! Glad y’all had a happy Halloween!!

  43. The pumpkin is adorable! :-) Love their costumes and agreed on princesses, my nieces are still obsessed with them.

  44. aww the girls are so cute, as usual :) looks like a wonderful day!

  45. Ghiradelli makes me weak in the knees. I know you’re not a boxed brownie person, but they make SUPER great brownies (that I then ADD Ghiradelli chocolate chips to). #sugarcoma

  46. Emily says:

Your girls give up their Ghiradellis? Mamma Pea, you’ve got it good!

  47. tweal says:

I love your pea pumpkin – though I think I like it better when it’s a 3-eyed jack-o-lantern! Great costumes too.

  48. krista says:

I’ve never heard of Trick or Treating before dark! Interesting. Maybe b/c in TX it’s still 70 degrees at 8pm, so there’s no bundling up or even needing socks here. Although I still donned my sumo wrestler outfit, being 6 months pregnant and all. Little kids thought I was a cow or frisbee! They must not watch enough Asian TV…

  49. krista says:

Oh and that pumpkin is totally that 3-eyed guy from Toy Story! Don’t lie…

  50. Cait's Plate says:

I definitely advocate eating them all…complete with the orange skirt :)

  51. Go to town on that chocolate–you deserve it! Happy Belated Halloween!!

  52. Katie says:

Haha!! I thought that pumpkin was the three-eyed alien from Toy Story!!

    But I can see the pea pod – it’s cute :) .

  53. We got no trick or treaters last night which was probably a good thing b/c we were the house without candy. If anyone came to the door my plan was individually wrapped 72% cacos ghirardelli squares so it’s funny that you got that from someone. I’m kinda glad no one rang the doorbell, I really didn’t want to give those away.

  54. I’m going to have to make the argument that, despite how freakin’ adorable your daughter is as a puppy, HAVING a puppy is still better. Observe: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2679/5778236073_1cd62d4d19_z.jpg

    But don’t worry. I won’t tell Lulu. :)

  55. I LOVE your peas pumpkin idea! Genius!

  56. Rachel O. says:

Long-time reader, first-time poster. Your kids are so cute!

I was just wondering today about a delicious and easy recipe for vegan pad thai, and I wondered whether you have one? Thanks!

  57. Looks like you all had a great Halloween! The girls look adorable!

  58. Amber K says:

I have no idea if we ever actually get trick-or-treaters because we are always out with the nieces a nephews (dressed as a butterfly, Tron, a devil and an angel). Although I feel bad for them because they can’t eat most of the candy! (Dairy and gluten allergies) Especially the adorable little devil, adding a corn allergy to the mix, candy is basically out. I’m thinking he’s going to wise up in the next couple of years and wonder what the point is of walking all over town collecting things he can’t eat!

  59. it sounds like you had quite the eventful day yesterday!
Thanks for the great read… and making me laugh :) Do you let the girls eat the chocolate/candy they get trick-or-treating? or do you trade it for something different. When my sister and I were little, I remember that my Dad would buy our candy from us and then take it to work for the boys. We could keep some if we wanted.. but we both thought it was a pretty cool trade!

  60. bitt says:

happy halloween! i should have hid the candy on top of the fridge. i may still have to. leftovers.

  61. Pea Neighbor says:

Somehow the “toilet costume” made it’s way to my house. I answered the door in it a few times and I’m pretty sure there was a toilet sighting later in the night with two 12 yr old girls giggling while they wore it at the same time and tried to trick or treat :)

  62. Holly says:

Ahh! Mama Pea how I have missed you! My world has been a bit crazy lately, so I am catching up on all of your posts that I missed. It feels so much better having Peas & Thank You back in my life :D …it seriously makes my day!
I’m loving the costume’s- you have the cutest girls! & don’t take this the wrong way …but I totally thought that your pumpkin was supposed to be brass knuckles at first- LOL! I was like why would she carve that?! But then I read below, and don’t worry, it DOES look like a pea pod, I just didn’t expect to see that on a pumpkin. I was thinking brass knuckles = scary..?! Ok, so my logic doesn’t make too much sense either ;)

  63. janetha says:

hahaha.. i like 3-eyed monster better. it’s spookier. the girls looked so cute! that puppy nose and swashbuckling pose were both amazing. i was secretly hoping to see a photo of you in your orange shirt, though. maybe next year? also, cracking up at the pea neighbor comment. love you!

  64. He he! Okay now I have to see Pea Daddy’s pose (and I really want to see your neighbor’s toilet costume). :) Glad you had a fun Halloween. I need to make your roasted pumpkin seeds now and your pumpkin molasses cookie dough balls. As soon as I feel better……

  65. Sally says:

I like the pea pumpkin!! :) And I didn’t buy candy this year because just like Lulu, I wouldeateverysinglepiecerightup!! :) ) Plus i live in an apartment complex and never get trick-or-treaters, so i really had no excuse! :) )

  66. julia says:

Oh my god, can your kids stop being so cute??? I literally cannot deal with it. I want to steal them. Or babysit! Do you need a babysitter? If you’re ever in Boston….

Also why does everything you make look so delicious an creative? I can barely microwave popcorn. I usually burn it.

your Halloween seemed lovely! :) Somehow I managed to not eat a single piece of chocolate this year. I have teh sadz about that. I need a Reeses.
Have you ever made a vegan version of those?

  67. The girls are adorable!! For some reason, I NEVER remember trick-or-treating before the sun went down. Is this a new rule or was I just a hardcore trick-or-treater?

  68. Stephanie says:

I made your Sloppy Joesphine recipe for dinner tonight and it ROCKED!!!

  69. you have the cutest girls!!
