Guest Post: YOU!

What a week.

I need to wash my hair.  Badly.

I’m speaking on two panels at the Vida Vegan Conference this weekend.  (If you see me at VVC, say hi!  And don’t look at my hair.)

I need to go school supply shopping.  Both girls are in school this year.  Make it stop.

I’m taking Lulu to get her vaccinations for preschool tomorrow.  Don’t tell.

I finally took off the shellac polish I’d been wearing for the last month and a half.  (If you see me at VVC, say hi!  And don’t look at my nails.)

Me.  Me.  Me.

But this week was about you and my appreciation of you.

Tonight, I get to show just a handful of the wonderful posts you have put together.

That were all about me.

Oops.

1)  Ali from Around the Veggie Table

Around_the_Veggie_Table

Ali made the Thai Veggie Burgers and some Dill Pickle Fries and her husband loved them so much, he got a little miffed that he had to share his pickle fries with his wife.

I’m trying really hard not to make an inappropriate joke about wifely duties, sharing and pickles here.  Ali’s just lobbing softballs at me, though.

2) Christina at Food Fitness Fun

Stars_in_the_City

Christina made two versions of chickpeas and ate them like candy.  I think she has a chickpea problem, and I’m enabling her.  I’m not sorry.

3)  Lisa at Vegan Culinary Crusade

Vegan_Culinary_Crusade_1

Lisa cooked up a bunch of recipeas from the book and took them over to her brother’s family.  There were kids.  There were lots of jokes.  There was lots of chickpea hoarding.

Vegan_Culinary_Crusade_2

Kid, do you want to grow up to be like Christina?!?

4)  Kristin at Stuft Mama

Stuft_Mama_1

Kristin gave up a shower to make dough balls.  She clearly has her priorities in the right place.  And I bet her hair’s still cleaner than mine.

Stuft_Mama_2

I really don’t know what her cat is doing to our book, though.  I’m scared.

5) Aly at It’s Been Real

It's_Been_Real_2

Aly made the simple, yet delicious Fire Roasted Salsa in a Cinch.  And then she made you feel bad for asking for the recipea.  You tell ‘em, Aly.

I really want Triscuits now.

6) Gretchen at Veggie Grettie

Veggie_Grettie_1

Gretchen not only made my very favorite dinner, the Teriyaki Tofu, but she then put her kids to work.

Veggie_Grettie_2

Brother was working that VitaMix like he was wearing a headset and hocking ‘em at Costco.  Gretchen, consider it…afterschool job…free membership…all-you-can-eat samples…  I think you just found your ticket to early retirement.

Wasn’t that fun?  Thank you ladies, for your wonderful posts and for letting me desecrate them on our site.

And now for the winners of the Pea Packs (minus the bibs, which we ran out of!), they are:  Sara, Miranda, Kari, Jamie Levine Daniel, and Donna Fleck.  Please send me your mailing addresses to peasandthankyou@hotmail.com and I’ll get your prizes on their way.

Thanks to all who entered and to everyone who participated in Fan Appreciation Week!  I hope you feel appreciated, because you are.  I also hope you are hungry, because I’ll be back Monday with a new recipea and, fingers crossed, clean hair!

  1. Christina says:

Forgive the following language: I must say, DAMN YOU MAMA PEA! damn you and your BALLS!…dough balls of course…I made those suckers 3 days ago and even packed a batch up for friends and family so that I wouldn’t eat all of them. Do you know what happened next? SUB-CONSCIOUS is what happened! My damn subconscious made me “forget” to bring them to said friends and family and I have now consumed ALL of your balls (lets keep it G here) like a fat kid!

  2. shannon j says:

My book finally came in the mail!!!! I cant wait to make more of your delicious recipeas!!

  3. What a neat post! Did it make you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside knowing everyone is cooking and loving your food?

  4. Lorin says:

I made your single-chin brownies and I cut up some mini reeses peanut cups and put sprinkled a few on top instead of chocolate chip and subbed 2 tsp of stevia for 2 tbsp of sugar (so 6 tbsp sugar, 2 tsp stevia). It was good! My mom said they were very moist :)

  5. Missy says:

Congrats on making the NYT Best Sellers list! What an accomplishment!! I have never made your dough balls, but I drool everytime I see a picture!

  6. I’m so honored to have made the list. And guess what’s on my to-do list tomorrow? Yep, right before taking a shower (again) is to make your dough balls to try to get on my neighbor’s good side. :) He he! Have a wonderful time at the conference. Hopefully Kitty will be more excited this time!

  7. Sue says:

Oh no, I also wanted to write and submit a post, but my week was totally crazy and I missed it. Damn!
And yes, those dough balls are indeed addicting. We have a problem.

  8. We don’t mind what your hair looks like–even though it always looks perfect! Good luck at VVC this weekend. Will you also be at Portland VegFest next month? Have you gone before? Would it be worth a 2 and a 1/2 hour drive?

  9. Trina says:

We have a chickpea problem too…and I love it!

  10. So many awesome blogs to check out :)

  11. When it rains it pours: book signing and book promotion tour(s), then the various TV shows and cooking segments and Q & A sesh with that reporter that came to your house and there was a slight cooking mishap (which the specifics escape me) and now the speaking engagement at VVC….wow, you are BUSY! And popular :)

Love everyone’s posts that you featured here. It’s fun to see what everyone made and their own pictures and words. Fun!

Have a great weekend and safe travels!

  12. Lauren says:

Good luck this weekend! You’ll do great as always! :)

  13. LOL these are great posts! I’d give up a shower to make dough balls too, no matter how dirty I was ! :)

  14. That cat will give me nightmares tonight. Maybe I need milk and dough ball cookies before going to bed to ease my mind. ;)

  15. Gosh, everyone loves ya! Deservingly. I’d say I’d come hire you as my chef but a) I surely can’t afford you, and b) your recipeas are quick and easy enough that I can do them myself! I really love all the support you’re getting, it means people are becoming more receptive to a vegan diet. Thanks for starting to break the barriers for all of us!

  16. Christina says:

    Whee, congrats on the NYT!!

That kid has the right idea hording the chickpea’s! I made the lemon rosemary ones again this week for some house guests and nearly ate them all before they arrived. I’m founding Roasted Chickpea Lovers Anonymous tomorrow.

I also made the PB&J muffins. My house guests loved them… a little too much. Rude! So I’m hoarding some at my office before they all disappear into someone else’s tummy.

Sigh, It’s just one pickle after another when I make anything from your book!

  17. Christine says:

Fun post! Loved the pictures of the kids – and the kitty! Congrats on the BN post and good luck this weekend!

I am going to buy my Christmas gifts of your book right now…that Amazon price is a steal.

  18. Erin says:

I’m convinced I’ll never be a winner, but its okay I’ll still be a superfan :) but I would like to purchase these goods sometime…when are you going to start selling them?!

  19. Christina says:

Good luck at VVC! You’ll do great :) I can’t believe both of the girls are going to be in school this year. Time flies.

I have those Thai veggie burgers on my ‘must make soon’ list!! We’ve had the better than ever black bean burgers twice, they are truly fantastic.

  20. Carissa says:

I love your commentary! I’m with Christina on the major chickpea problem. I like them roasted, plain, in burgers, wherever they are. Last night my mom picked them out of her bean salad and gave me a pile on my plate. It was like being a kid again!

  21. You deserve all the attention you can get! That book is amaazzzing!

  22. Cait's Plate says:

I got my book the other day and have been flagging recipes ever since (does it still count if I’ve flagged pretty much every page? haha).

  23. blossjoss says:

    Hair washing is over rated.

The dough balls on the other hand. I can’t wait to try them! Along with basically every recipe you’ve ever invented.

  24. Jen says:

I laughed more than once throughout reading this post. I love your silly, witty statements. Your personality is what makes your cookbook even more than a cookbook. You deserve all the praise you’ve gotten, as well as your spot on the New York Times Bestsellers List! Congratulations on that again. Oh, and I want to make those Thai Veggie Burgers…like, now. I haven’t cooked for my fiance in probably a billion years. I’ve watched him eat about a hundred too many Trader Joe’s microwavable meals. I feel bad. I really do. It’s time to make some Peas & Thank You meals for him.

  25. Janelle says:

Cute posts about the book! I now have a near-by friend who has the book, so we’re going to have a party making recipes from it soon. :)

Oh, and I love shopping for school supplies… I’ll take the kids! Haha.

  26. Libby says:

It’s so great to have all the bloggers “networking” for you. Great pics! I’ve got to try the teriyaki tofu, even though I am tofu-challenged and can never seem to get it right. Maybe your recipea will reform me. I’ve also decided that a double-batch of dough balls must come with us on vacation next month (to be hoarded by me in the front seat, of course) :)

  27. Ashley says:

Totally random but we played Yahtzee the other night and for the “name” on one of my old scorecards I wrote “me me me!” Haha…we are so alike. ;) What a cute post!! People sure are eating well because of YOU! Another success last night. Chris + I loved the teriyaki tofu with creamy coconut brown rice + steamed greens!

  28. I love these kinds of posts because I get to discover new blogs that I might have otherwise missed! Thanks!

  29. Lauren B. says:

So…. when’s your NEXT book coming out?! :) I’ll be pre-ordering it when it does.

Did I just totally overwhelm you? HA!

  30. I would hoard those chickpeas too! Mmmm. :)

  31. Alice says:

I ran out over lunch and picked up your book! Can’t wait to start reading and cooking this weekend!

  32. Amber K says:

Since I finally have your cookbook (yay!) I have been reading my way through it. You are such a good writer! I mean, I knew that already, but it feels so different in book form. Holding the pages in my hands is just a different sensation. And the photos are BEAUTIFUL!

  33. Good luck at the VVC! Hope you have a fab weekend! :)

  34. Congrats on the best seller list! So glad that I found your blog. We have found a used quite a few of your recipes already. Can’t wait to get my hands on your cook book!

  35. janetha says:

CLEVER. Good thing you are so popular! Now go wash your hair. (I love and miss you.)

  36. Such a good idea for a post! Good luck this weekend!

  37. alex says:

reading blogs with my greasy bangs pushed back in a head band (and I swear I just washed my hair!)
    Shellac for-EVAH

  38. Lorin says:

I went out to a restaurant tonight and someone ordered a spinach-artichoke dip. How would you veganize/healthify that? Or is it possible?

  39. Michelle says:

As a healthcare provider, THANK YOU for vaccinating your children :)

    Oh, and love your book!

  40. Aly says:

    Thanks for posting, Mama Pea!

And you’re right, I’m not above a guilt trip. A little guilt, people buy the book, families live happier, healthier lives, less animals die. All good things… It’s a public service really. Right?

  41. Melissa says:

I ordered your book on Amazon and it already arrived…I was drooling instantly! I am so excited!!! Just wanted to tell you that you have made my day. Thank you :)

  42. I so wish I could be at the conference with you this weekend. Have a blast, I know you will rock your presentation!! :)

  43. Stephanie says:

Congrats on making it on the list!

I hope it’s okay if I post a question about the Thai Veggie Burger recipe here?
I made them today and I wasn’t sure what broccoli slaw is? Can you just buy that premade? I just used raw broccoli instead and got some very green burgers! Which was my next problem – I used the vita mix to blend everything up and it had quite a hard time, I had to use that stomper thing to smash everything in there and somehow it was either not having it mixed very well at all, or well it was quite well blended in the end…and very green :-) .
They still tasted delicious and also satisfied my carnivorous husband. So I’m pretty sure I’ll be making them again and maybe I can even make them a little better. Would it be better not to use the vita mix at all and just use my hands to make the dough?

    • MamaPea says:

I use my vitamix. Broccoli is a premade slaw made from broccoli, carrots and cabbage, but it’s made just from the broccoli stems, so it doesn’t have the green florets. I think you’ll find the recipe works much better with the slaw!

  44. Tami says:

Congrats Sarah on making THE list

  45. Anne says:

Made the peanut butter chocolate chip cookie dough balls this weekend. Found out that Ghiardelli’s chocolate chips are vegan! (I used all chocolate chips, and no peanut butter chips). The grocery store only had whipped Earth Balance left, so the cookies came out a little crumbly, but even crumbly they are good! Helped me get through Hurricane Irene! I made half the cookies in the toaster oven, and saved the other half to make later.

    • MamaPea says:

Yes, Ghiradelli chocolate is vegan for the most part…now if only those gooey caramel squares they make were…

Happy to hear of your cookie success!

  46. Kristiana says:

Unrelated to this post…sort of… but I’ve gotta say – I used your hummus recipe today and “wowwie-wow-wow!” It was great! I’ve been making hummus for awhile, but never heard or thought of skinning the chickpeas. What an unbelievable difference! I put my 9-year-old to work doing the skinning and will be employing such child-labor practices from here on out…in the name of awesome, creamy hummus. : )

  47. Julie says:

I just saw your site for the first time yesterday (thanks to the FoodDay referral). I am a carnivore…and happily so. I’ve often been intrigued by going veggie….my problem is that I don’t like that many vegetables. Hummus, tofu, and other soy products have never been tasty to my palate. I’m open to doing a couple veggie meals a week (we essentially do anyway) but I can’t seem to like tomatoes, peppers, onions and many of the ingredients in your recipes. Help?

    • MamaPea says:

It’s hard to be a vegetarian when you don’t like veggies! But keep trying…you never know, you might like them in different recipes, or just swap in the veggies you do like instead of those tomatoes, peppers and onions.

  48. I read about you in the Oregonian and then checked out you blog. So glad you have found success at what you love. Can’t wait to try your recipes…and I’m sharing. I posted your blog on my Facebook travel page Go Oregon Now. Check it out: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Go-Oregon-Now/232578963434835

  49. I was starstruck over Isa too (but too much of a wimp to go say hi). But I was equally starstruck over you and you were so nice when I met you :)

  50. Elle says:

As a vegetarian flirting heavily with veganism who also happens to be a penny pinching college student, your blog has been so helpful for me! I’ve said it before, but once more, thank you for all the inspiration.

  51. Gena says:

What a cute guest post! It was so fun to see you there, Sarah, and thank you for a really lovely lunch. Miss you sorely already.
