Sunrise Smoothies
Have you heard of that children’s book (that isn’t for children) called “Go The F**k to Sleep?”
The book is so very, very wrong. And so very, very funny.
I’ve already got the follow-up book concept sketched out in my head. It’s called “Why the H**l Are You Up?”
This morning, I treasured the thought of “sleeping in” after a long, tiring week. I put “sleeping in” in quotes because if you are childless that could mean 10 or 11 in the morning, but once your womb has been compromised, so has that term.
“Sleeping in.”
I’d just like it to not be dark outside still, is that too much to ask?
Some time around dawn, a little head peeked into my bedroom, the door squeaking ever so slightly. Actually a big mass of curls attached to a little body burst in the room violently, and I’m pretty sure her hair opened the door by itself.
I escorted The Hair back to her room, asking as nicely as I could muster, “Why are you up?”
She looked at me thoughtfully and asked, “Are there owls in Oregon?”
“Yes, why?”
“I think an owl woke me up,” she answered.
“No, Geeg, the owls are asleep,” I said wistfully, hoping Mrs. Williams hadn’t been so ambitious as to teach her about nocturnal animals in kindergarten.
“Well, then it was the washing machine,” she tried again.
I scowled and said, “Nice try kid, but you know I haven’t done laundry in at least two weeks and there’s no way I’m doing it at 5:45.”
She sized up my pajamas/workout clothes/outfit I’ve worn ever since I got home from running errands yesterday.
“I know!,” a light bulb went off. “It was the treadmill!”
“Nope, kid, I was asleep.”
“Well, maybe I was just excited to go to the beach with Mimi and Poppy.” Bingo.
I gave up any hope of either one of us going back to bed, so we got up, went downstairs, colored in My Little Pony coloring books with scratchy, worn out markers and tried to giggle quietly so as not to wake the rest of the house.
And then we watched the sunrise.
Sunrise Smoothies
Makes 4 smoothies
- 1 1/2 c. frozen strawberries
- 1 1/2 c. apple juice
- stevia, honey or agave to taste (optional)
- 1 c. frozen mango
- 1/2 c. frozen pineapple
- 1 1/2 c. orange juice
- strawberries for garnish (optional)
Optional add-ins for extra protein and/or healthy fats: protein powder, flax seeds, chia seeds, avocado, coconut butter
In a blender, combine strawberries, apple juice and sweetener to taste, if using.
Pour strawberry smoothie carefully into glasses and transfer glasses to freezer temporarily.
Rinse out blender and add in mango, pineapple, orange juice and sweetener to taste, if using. Blend until smooth.
Remove glasses from freezer and carefully pour in mango smoothie to achieve a layered effect.
Garnish with a fresh strawberry and serve.
Beautiful enough to serve to guests,
or perfect for an early morning party of two.
Really early.
But not too early for cookies.
As Gigi dug in, I assured her it was okay that I would now need twice as much under-eye concealer and would continue to spiral downward in my recent relapse with coffee.
There, I admit it.
I said, “I understand, Geeg, you just really like spending time with Mimi and Poppy. I’d get up early for that too.”
And then she twisted a curl around her green marker-stained finger, and looked up at me and said, “Actually, Mom, I like spending time with you.”
All I could say to that was, “Cheers.”
**********
For those of you that have already purchased our book, thank you! It’s a little scary to put your heart and soul into something and send it out into the world, but when you get the responses that you’ve given to us, it makes that risk totally worth it. I can’t wait to do it again.
For those of you that haven’t purchased yet, or if you want to share the book with a friend or relative, I’d urge you to please purchase the book this weekend! This is our last chance to make a big surge that will count towards the first week of sales and making any Best Seller’s Lists.
Many online retailers are offering free shipping when you purchase two books, so for a little over $25 you could have some Christmas shopping already done! Something else you can do, as suggested by reader Michelle (thanks!) is request that your local library purchase the book. Many libraries have request forms online!
And if you haven’t entered our giveaway, there’s still time.
Have a beautiful weekend!

Way too cute. : ) DELICIOUS LOOKING RECIPEA BY THE WAY!!!!
Thanks, hon. It IS delicious!
Aww, in this case, the ends may have justified the means. That’s just too adorable!
That smoothie looks and sounds fabulous!! Love the flavor combo.
I have to admit, I got choked up typing this.
I thought the same thought to myself when I couldn’t fall back asleep at 5:50. I got up, made breakfast, then read your cookbook though! It was worth it…although a nap now sounds great.
I’m with you. And the girls are with Mimi and Poppy, so nap it is!
GENIUS Smoothie idea! <3
Thanks, love.
I just started reading after hearing so much about you all over twitter! I ordered your book, I am always looking for new ways to make classic dishes! I cannot wait!
Thank you so much, Samantha, and welcome!!!
I need to try a layered smoothie like that! I am just so lazy with cleaning the blender. But it would impress Andy so….HMM! A quick rinse should do the trick.
Sleeping in for us is 8am. We need to take advantage of the ability to sleep in later before we have kids…but we don’t!
Well, at least you will be in good practice
Happy weekend to you both!
ommmgshhh so sweet Geeeggg~~~and that made me crack up sooooo much! you’re sure her hair opened the door??!!! hahhahaha. This smoothie looks and sounds too amazing~
LOL @ “The Hair” and a “compromised womb.” How you manage to get from a compromised womb to a decadent looking smoothie is a gift that only a few have.
While we prefer the term “child-free,” rest assured that the pets also think pre-dawn is a fun time to play, walk all over you, or vomit violently.
whoa! did my comment disappear? I guess I pushed wrong button, meh. I was saying that Geeg is probably one of the sweetest girls ever and (I was going to say) that I want a daughter like her hehehehe. It is brave of you to put yourself out there, but God’s blessed you so you can be a blessing to others! And the comment about her hair opening the door truly cracked me up.
That’s some big hair.
I could not make up the things that come out of that sweet child’s mouth.
My Bible verse from this morning is relevant to what you said…and I absolutely think applies to you and everyone who brings kindness like yours to others:
Matthew 5:14-16 (I’ll let you look it up)
Have a great day, hon.
UGH! I love that verse soo much! Amen. Praise God that we can encourage each other like this yahooo! *sniff, someone bring me the kleenex* This warmed my heart and man why am I so mushy?! hahha!
And actually…haha….perhaps someday I’ll post a picture on my blog with my SCARY crazy afro when I was 3. Surprisingly enough, it beats Gigi’s hair. *gasp!*
I’d love to see it. Yay for blog comment fellowship!
You are such a cool mom! I want to be re-born in your womb.
My uterus hurts thinking about that
gah! she couldn’t be any cuter and that smoothie couldn’t look anymore de-licious!
YUM! And we get some amazing mangoes and pineapples here. I will make some in the morning!
Jealous!!!
I just recently found your blog through some others that I read and I’m hooked. You have a new reader…one that is even considering cutting back on the meat based meals, not ready to say all meatless meals though. Its something that was kind of coming anyway since when I make a meat based meal I repeat “eat the meat on your plate, you need the protein” over and over to my 3 little girls. But, when I make beans they gobble them up. So…my 7 year old says she still wants hot dogs and hamburgers but that’s it. I said what if I make burgers out of beans and her eyes lit up. So, I’ll be trying one of your burger recipes and the mmmm sauce pretty soon, oh and dough balls!
And, I ordered the book so I’m sure that list will grow!
Thanks for all you do!
And not to rub it in (ok, maybe I’m bragging but rest assured that when I do so I pay for it) but I was the first one up at my house at 7:30am. 3 girls…7, 4, and 18 months. Now, I better get some mangoes b/c I have a feeling I’ll see the sunrise tomorrow LOL!
Oh man…you are lucky! And with an 18 month old? Unreal!
Thank you, Selena! I was just actually chatting with my neighbors about this last night (hi Cari and Tony!). As much as I respect those advocating hard-core that everyone go vegan, it is a transition and I respect that. And I also respect that not everyone is going to fully make that transition. But if we can each make a change in that direction through meatless meals, that will make an impact and be a step in the right direction! I hope that our blog (and now the book) will help you do that for your family.
Much love to you!
I bought your book on my Nook (e-reader) and am loving it! I do think some of the formatting, pictures and text, is wrong on the e-reader version which is upsetting and a little confusing. But it’s okay.
This smoothie looks delicious and I love how your cookies are so healthy that they’re perfect for a breakfast treat!
Hey, Kayla, why don’t you email me at peasandthankyou@hotmail.com and let me know what the problems are with the version? I’ll see if we can get it fixed!
WAHOOO!! A new smoothie recipea!! Looks amazing!! And how precious is Gigi? I would be a huge “snot-fest” if my little one said that to me.
I was weeping as I wrote this. But probably because I didn’t get to sleep in.
Yummmmm Tj’s frozen mango is the best! Love the layered effect
I agree…love that stuff and eat it straight from the bag!
What a cute post. I can’t wait to get my book! I ordered it yesterday on Amazon and it should be here on Monday! Looking forward to some new meal ideas!!!
Oooh, I can’t wait for you to get it! Thanks for ordering!
You’re going to make her want to get up early every morning! Heck, I’d get up at 5:45 on a Saturday morning if someone would make me a smoothie
.
Ha ha ha…I knew that was coming
What a pretty smoothie. Best looking smoothie on the web!
Yeah, baby. Calendar coming soon…
Have you heard Samuel L. Jackson reading Go the F**k to Sleep? It’s awesome. I think your follow-up book could be very successful.
Get out! I have to find that…
I love the two layers! Have a great weekend
Thank you, you too!
that looks delicious! I’m 3 months pregnant and already wondering if my kid will have “the hair” – you ever realize that when curly hair runs in families, it seems more out of control with each passing generation?
I love Gigi’s toothless smile! so cute
I don’t know that I knew you were pregnant! And you got a bib! Congrats
you can your children just get cuter and cuter
loved reading this and that smoothie looks delish!
Thanks. Geeg is my girl. (well and Lu too)
What a sweet post!
And that smoothie recipe looks great! I will probably modify it a bit and add one more fruit.
Tequila is a fruit, right?
I won’t tell.
I wanted to mention that another way that people can help increase the sales and readership of your book is to request that their local library purchase a copy if they haven’t already. If your library has an online system, you can probably submit a purchase request online.
Wonderful idea! Thank you!
Gigi is going to grow up to be a little model.. what a cutie!!
Great idea for a smoothie.. id love to swirl the two together
She’s going to grow up and be a princess, ballerina, rock star…thank you very much
Yum! It’s a Mama Pea day in my house… Pretzel dough rising to make for lunches next week, snickerdoodle cookie dough balls just out of the oven, and a yummy sunrise smoothie in my hand! My smoothie didn’t layer as well as yours but it is delicious.
I love “Mama Pea” day in your house! (You have to let the strawberry portion freeze up a little bit before adding the mango…I’m generally not that patient)
I want to go to the beach with Mimi and poppy. Will try to promote book even more. Maybe I should tape sign to the side of my van??:-)
Can you shrink wrap it with Peas & Thank You graphics?
That looks incredible. I love that the layers stayed separate like that! My sister says she often wakes up at 4am to see my 4 year old niece standing by her bedside ready to start the day. She’s not as nice as you – she’s just like “No. Go back to bed!” Haha.
Or maybe she’s like “Why the H#*L are you up?!”
she woke you up so you could create this awesome post! loved it.=)
I thought of that too. I probably would have taken the day off otherwise.
Thanks for the love!
What a pretty smoothie! I have everything on hand so this may be our Sunday breakfast.
Oh, and I can relate to the early rising…although I was hoping it was something they outgrew. How old is Gigi again?!
I bought your book last night at a big B&N in Brooklyn, NY. There were 5+ copies and I turned them so they were facing out instead of just showing the spines
YES!!! I love you
I love that book! My 14 month old still wakes up all night long and barely naps… I made your Pumpkin Cream Pie Oat Bran this morning and it was AMAZING! It was so fun cooking a healthy breakfast that all three of us enjoyed. The smoothie is so beautiful!
Yay! I also love that oat bran. It’s so delicious on cold Fall mornings too!
This is a gorgeous smoothie. Love the layered effect.
Haha, Gigi must have known something amazing was waiting for her.
Ahh, I know that feeling. My son was up just before 6 this morning although I have him pretty well trained, but that doesn’t work when he wakes his little sister up, haha. Your smoothie looks fantastic. I’ve really got to try that, I have everything I need
PS, I love Gigi’s hair, especially in this post. It reminds me so much of my own at that age, but my mom didn’t do totally awesome things with it, hah.
“Totally awesome” is exactly how I would describe her hair this morning when she woke up
Here’s to hoping you and I get a nap!
Haha, don’t we all describe our hair as totally awesome when we first wake up? I meant on school days or just when you do her hair up – it always looks great. At that age I think my hair always looked like I just woke up. Sorry for being confusing, I still don’t think I’ve woken up since 6 this morning
Oh you weren’t confusing…I thought it was cute!
These smoothies are super cute. As is Gigi!
I will definitely request my local library purchase your book
Thank you!!!
The smoothie looks like one you’d get at a fancy restaurant or poolside at a fancy resort <—I could use that BTW!
I love the two layers! Especially the mango, pineapple, orange juice and sweetener layer.
And super impressed that the top layer didn't melt into the red layer while you were taking the pictures…you work FAST with your photos, clearly, if there was no melting going on. Impressive. The things I think about, I know.
You should be SO proud of your book and your sales! I see your book popping up on SO MANY blogs and everyone is gushing about it. And you deserve to be on all the best seller lists!!
Thank you, Averie! And I do shoot quick…I’ve got things to do
Have a great weekend. Hope you get a poolside drink!
You just successfully combined all of my favorite fruits into one incredibly simple drink. Love it already, and I haven’t even made it yet!
Ooh, hope it lives up to your expectations
Gorgeous smoothies!!!
I hear ya on the waking up early with kids luck for them I’ve always been that early to rise girl. love watching sunrises. and lucky for me they like to go to bed early just like me
those smoothies look AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m adding everything to my grocery list
YUMMMM!!!!!!!!!!
hope they have fun at the beach and you have fun in a quiet house. although sometimes it is too quiet
You are a better woman than I am
Late to bed, early to rise, that’s me!
Have a great weekend!
Your little stories make me so excited to have kids one day. In my post today, I talked about happiness. It’s experiences like the one you had this morning with Gigi that make us realize we have a lot to be happy for. Gorgeous smoothie, happy child. Your blog always puts a smile on my face.
Thanks, hon. I’ll go read your post
Once your womb is compromised so is that word. Seriously, how do you manage to be so witty on so little sleep?!
I love your writing and blog and I’m definitely buying your book, and I’m excited to make your recipeas for my family. Even though I don’t know you, I’m really happy for you and your success – good luck with the best seller list!
Thank you, Susan. I think I am moderately amusing because I have so little sleep. It makes me loopy
I appreciate your support and love…even though I don’t “know” you!!!
just bought the book
you know it’s gotta be good when you’re able to get in-debt college kids to buy it! looking forward to using this to help me transition to a meatless lifestyle
Ha ha ha…thanks Melissa! I promise, it will be worth every penny!
That smoothie looks beautiful. Really, that’s a gorgeous smoothie. I could likely get my smoothie hating son to drink that. It’s worth a try.
I have been telling everyone about your book. And I already ordered a copy and an e-book but…maybe I should get a few more for Christmas shopping. Never too early to start. And what a great gift idea.
You sweet, girl. Marry me.
I love to see really ANYTHING you make, but with school starting back soon, I’d like more quick,healthy,kid-friendly breakfasts.
That looks so yummy! How well I remember those early mornings shared with my little ones. Now I’m hoping for times like that with my grandchildren during sleep-overs. If I ever get granchildren! Just finished ready Peas and Thank You cover to cover – I mean cover to cover! I couldn’t get enough of it. When I got to the end, my thought was: “Oh, she has to do another book! What about all those delicious donut recipes?! I’ve been saving them, but it would be so much better to have them in a book to go along with more of your stories. You did such a great job, Sarah! And what a wonderful treasure for your girls to have forever and ever.
Good morning Mama Pea, You are the only (other) adult awake in my house this morning thanks to the Blogosphere of Timelessness. I am enjoying (?) watching the sun rise with Mr Spunky Pants who is 7 months old. I was grumpy until I read Gigi’s Proverb – thank you Sweetie, might hop on over and order your Mummy’s book before I forget. xo
The smoothie looks so refreshing! As for your book… Loved my copy so much that I bought a second one at Barnes and Noble today to give to a friend. I’ve been mapping out my grocery list based on recipes I will be trying. Each page makes me smile. You did such a great job translating the warmth and inviting nature of your blog into print!
Thank you so, so much!!!
I renamed this the “sunset smoothie” cuz we are having them for dinner tonight with freshly baked banana bread. The kids loved them and loved the layers! The effort was totally worth it. Cant wait to get your cookbook, ive loved every recipea of yours that ive made.
What a yummy dinner! Thanks for the love
I just ordered my copy! I’ve been reading your blog for a while, and I’m so excited to read your book!
Thanks so much!!!
Awwww….what a beautiful daughter you have!
Those smoothies are also beautiful!
Are there palm trees in Oregon? Because I swear one just popped up in that picture of Gigi sipping her tropical smoothie. If I book us a trip to Hawaii, will you promise to bring your VitaMix and make me one of these? I pretty sure we could just lay one of these on a beach chair and attract all the surfer dudes we want
Now that would be worth getting up for!
This smoothie looks delicious! I will definitely be giving it a try. I’m headed to Trader Joe’s to stock up on frozen fruit anyway, so I might as well have a pretty smoothie to balance out all of the pea green ones! You’d probably like those though, wouldn’t you?
I bought my brother that book for father’s day, because his girls (almost 2 and almost 4) will. not. sleep. When your girls aren’t around, I highly, highly recommend the audio book. It’s free, and it’s read by Samuel L. Jackson. It’s just as good as it sounds.
http://www.audible.com/pd?asin=B00551W570
I’m clicking through… Thanks!
That is a bright and cheerful smoothie. It is sure to put a smile on somebody’s face. I will be picking up a copy of your book soon and can’t wait to get in the kitchen cooking.
Aaww, I bet you felt all warm and fuzzy when she said that–extra concealer or not. lol And I already bought your book! I did yesterday, in fact. Plan on bringing it with me to the movies tonight to peruse before the show starts
Thank you! Enjoy!
This post got me a little teary…and not just because its a beautiful smoothie.
I know you can relate
sweet babies.
Anytime cookies really ARE good anytime.
Also apparently we need to relapse to completely give something up. Just start chugging your greens again and you’ll be back on soon enough.
aaaaaaaaaw, them curls.
p.s.
this is a must-try recipea for sure!
Mama Pea, I never had any intentions of not purchasing your book but I did so today because you deserve to be on everyone’s best seller list! Your writing is incredibly funny, witty and entertaining. I can’t wait for the book to get here!
Awww. And I literally just did that out loud. “awwww!”
You melted my heart!! And don’t tell but I totally took the 5 copies of your book at my local B&N and put them front and center in this huge food/cooking display they had. Much better than where they orignially were- which was not even in the veg section! :/ Next thing ya know I’m going to start reading aloud from it on a street corner!
You rock!!! Seriously.
Aww, so so cute. I really see so much of myself in your little one. I was just like that when I was her age. You make a pretty mean smoothie at such un godly hours of the morning.
the missing teeth are the best. Too cute! And I will be going up to Barnes and Noble tomorrow! is your book there? right?
Yesssss! Look for us in the general cooking
oh man, why do my smoothies always look like dirt compared to yours?! think you could send me one fedex.
hehe
I just bought your book! I’ve already looked through some of the recipes and I want to make every single one! None are too intimidating, but some seem fun to make (like the cinnamon rolls). The cashier at barnes n noble said “Enjoy your Peas”,haha. Anyways, I’m excited to cook from it. I already love the recipes I made from your website, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy the ones in your book. Now, I just need to hit up the store since I’ve been gone from backpacking
. Have a great weekend!
Gosh, thanks so much! That’s so funny the cashier was getting in on those puns.
You already have 44 wonderful reviews on Amazon!
I want to make this smoothie asap. It looks delish!
What a sweet story
And a fun recipea to go along with it!
By the way, I just made a combo of you light version of the choc chip cookie dough balls and the cookie dough Larabars and it is TO DIE FOR!!! Seriously, genius. I might have to eat it every day for the rest of my life
Oh yeah, believe me…I know
Running out immediately (or as soon as I can get the 6 year old pried away from Mario Bros Wii and the 2 month old in the carseat, fed, changed, and spitup/drool wiped off her face) to the store to buy frozen fruit to make these. They’re good for dessert too, right?? Not sure I can wait until morning.
On another note, the Steam Up was hot and filled with an insane amount of tractors. I was sending you good cooking vibes from down the street. Playdate for the littles to be scheduled soon though!!
I’m holding you to that! Missed you today
Awww, Gigi!
I have always been an early bird too!
I’m late to the party, but on the subject of nocturnal animals….I’ll be teaching that in about 2 weeks! I teach Kindergarten and one of the first books is The Kissing Hand (honestly…I’m tired of the book, but the kids LOVE it) and we talk about why the animals are going to school at night with Mr. Owl. We hit the night creatures again around Halloween since vampire bats are a big interest with 5 year olds.
Oddly enough, this may be the first time I’ve recognized that I’m looking forward to heading back to school. The kids are HILARIOUS at this age and I miss those conversations.
Just not quite that early
That’s it! The did a whole month on The Kissing Hand! No wonder she wasn’t buying that the owl was sleeping.
I can so relate to “sleeping in” being 7 or 8 if I am lucky! Thankfully, my son has gotten to the age that he will either sleep late (like 10ish) or he will stay in his room and entertain himself then get breakfast when he gets hungry…the other one still bursts into the room at some terribly early hour to tell me she is awake!
That smoothie is pretty enough to serve to some girlfriends for brunch…if I ever actually did stuff like that. So, it is pretty enough for me to make and sip while hiding in my closet pretending to be on some quiet and beautiful secluded beach…
Hiding in a closet! Been there.
Hi,
I was thinking of ordering your book, but I was wondering if it contained nutritional information.
Thanks!
Yes! It does!
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. It really means a lot. I’m going to order your book now.
I’ll have it Wednesday. I hope this helps your 1st week of sales!
Thanks!!!
My pleasure. Thank YOU!
Just ordered your book through Amazon – wishing you a wonderful first week!
Thanks, V!
My cousin woke up at 5 am crying because he can’t sleep without his mommy, even though he already had for 6 hours? I am being the babysitter while mommy is out of town and luckily the tv worked some magic for me and he slept until 11:30!
Poor thing! (you and him!)
I have totally been there with the kiddos up way too early thing! And I just printed off your tasty Sunrise Smoothie recipe because my 5 year old will be all over that one! (He’s the only one in our family who won’t touch our morning green smoothie). I recently published a children’s book titled “The Boy Who Love Brococli” aimed at encouraging kids to eat their veggies and know what you mean when you say you’re putting yourself out there! I can’t wait to read my copy of “Peas and Thank You” too!!
I’d love to read your book! Where can I get it?
Amazon.com or from http://www.veggie-kids.net/books.html. Or I’d love to send you a copy for your girls if you’d like!
I would love that! But I’m happy to buy it too…we’ve got to support these veggie mama writers
I have been all over the smoothies lately and I am going to be all over this one
So pretty! I bet it would make an excellent adult drink as well…maybe add a shot of vodka.
welp, guess i should have read this post before (kind-of-almost) requesting more smoothie recipes in the giveaway post.
love you Mama Pea. beautiful post, as always. enjoy every cup of that relapse java, it’s totally justified and i hope it tastes aaaahhhmazing.
It was gooood. It’s going to be hard to go back to the caffeine free side…
That smoothie picture is dreamy! And I got your book a couple days ago, and am totally in love with it! Can’t wait to try the recipes–the one that immediately intrigued me was the Indian Shepherd’s Pie.
Thank you! That shepherd’s pie is to die for!!!
what a beautiful and genuine thing for Gigi to say, and a testament to how great a mama you are!
Love the layered smoothie idea, I’ll have to try that.
I guess moments like those go some way towards making up for the loss of sleep ins
(Or do they?)
I have ordered your book and can’t wait to receive it!
Thanks, Kari! You’ll love it!
Okay, the maternal bone was definitely skipped out of this particular body… but even I had a moment over that one. Her concentration over that straw is hilarious as well!
Being a mom is the best. No lie.
Tell her to blame it on Pea Kitty next time! In my house the cats are up (and walking on my head) long before my son.
With your busy week have you noticed a change in the meals you are preparing/eating? Just curious.
Enjoying your book! It’s already well worn.
C, that is a good question, and the answer is YES! But I’ve been trying to prepare things in advance before it gets too crazy. I made some “meat”balls just Friday and froze some, but admittedly, we have been eating a lot of convenient meals like chickpea salads and crack wraps. But so far we’ve managed to eat healthy and well in spite of it all!
This is so cute. I would definetly wake up early for that smoothie
OK OK, you’ve tugged at my heart strings… I’m going to get your book today. If I win your giveaway, I’ll donate the one I buy to my local library system… for realisies. (cause I’m all about supporting you! but I selfishly want my autographed copy. I’ve got your spot on my book case reserved… right next to Brendan!)
You are awesome. I’d like to sign your copy in person, though. How do we make that happen?
I got your book and…….Love it! I am so excited to cook/bake from it. I think it is my new favorite
WHOOHOO! Thank you, Jen!
That smoothie is gorgeous! I would never have the patience to wash out my blender and wait for the bottom layer to freeze, though.
Sometimes I wonder if your family knows how lucky they are that you do things like this? Seriously, probably Pea Daddy does, but I wonder if Gigi and Lulu think that everyone’s mom is making them all kinds of healthy, delicious food all the time. Pretty jealous over here.
Also, got your cookbook and read my boyfriend the chocolate chip cookie story the other day-he thought it was hilarious! I’m just waiting for the end of my summer classes so I’ll have time to cook something from it for him too. Congratulations on all the success you’ve been having so far Mama Pea!
Actually, and I’m again getting teary (geesh!), Gigi pretty much says to me everyday, “Mama, you’re the best cook in the world!” and then she asks if she can have another cookie.
Ahh…the infamous choc. chip cookie story. I can’t tell you how much that gets brought up around here. Okay, I can. Every. Day.
Aw, that is so sweet! Definitely makes it harder to hold that sleep grudge. I woke up every two hours last night worried that my 22-month old niece and nephew were going to wake up. They never did and I was still a walking zombie this morning. But the second I saw their smiles this morning I was excited to see them
Can I pour you a cup of coffee?
Ha! I wish my body could tolerate caffeine. Just gotta make myself one of these smoothies and let the fruit’s natural sugar do its work!
Aww… Gigi is so sweet. And it’s so sweet of you to make an early morning a smoothie party. When I’m back at home, I’ll have to make that smoothie. For now, I’m gorging on food cart rice and beans and sweet potatoes, berry salad, and early morning coffee and croissants. Oh, and the Portland Farmer’s Market is AMAZING. I want to move here for that alone.
It’s the perfect day for it too! Enjoy!!!
These are BEAUTIFUL!
You definitely are super mum! Making that delicious looking concoction so early in the morning is very impressive!
I don’t think anyone will blame you for a slight relapse in caffeine addiction!
Hell I need a coffee just thinking about how little sleep you must be getting!
You must have THE MOST adorable collection of family photo’s btw! Every single one you post is fab!! Gigi is such a cutie!!
I kind of think I’ll be back on it for the next few weeks. But then I will do my best to get off of it again. And thanks about the photos! There will never be a lack of them in this house
That is the sweetest thing a daughter could say! Gigi is so darn cute. That smoothie looks heavenly on this hot summer day!!
I ordered your book this morning. Will you be doing any more local (PDX) signings?
Yes! I’m hoping to schedule one at Powell’s! I’ll also be doing a cooking demo at In Good Taste on Saturday, August 20th.

I’d love to meet you there!
That is so sweet . . . . I think it may even make up for her waking you up so early.
I bought your book yesterday, and I havent been able to put it down since. The stories are hilarious.
Loving your book! I got in in the mail along with a donut pan, and the BabyCakes cookbook, from Amazon. Can you say Christmas in July?!
Hope you make the best seller list!
- Erin
Thank you, Erin!!!
Ahhhhhhh first of all this makes me remember Nicaragua so you betcha I’ll be drinking this tomorrow after the sun rises because I’m a late sleeper (wooo no womb damage yet for this girl). Slash Gigi is the caaaaautest. I want a little chile who will tell me cute things like that and mean it. That’s why I love babysitting kids under the age of 7 — they’re still so honest and fearless with their feelings. It’s beautiful, I try to learn from them every time <3
This smoothie looks gorgeous, tasty and yes, I’d love to serve it to guests!
Speaking of guests, I had a good friend over Friday morning for blog-talk over breakfast. I had a copy of your book right next to my blog notebook and she asked me about it – her family is not vegan but her 2 year old daughter won’t eat vegetables. She’s going to get your book!
I’ve been meaning to ask- are you going to BlogHer or VidaVeganCon? I’m going to both (nutty, I know, flying out from NYC twice in August!) Would love to say hello!
Oh, thank you for sharing the Peas! Do I owe you a commission?
I will be presenting at VVC! Can’t wait to meet you there!
Your kids are some lucky little girls to get veggies and fruits as much as they do- they love it now but will appreciate it so much more when they’re older. Thank you for putting so much time into the book! I love it and have already boughten my mom a copy as well : )
Oh, you are welcome. Thank YOU for supporting us!
That ‘go to blank sleeping video made me spit my coffee out. You’re so right…wrong to but so funny!
I just started reading your blog after all that hype about your book. I can see why everyone adores you and your recipes (and your cute kids!).
This smoothie looks delicious!
Thanks, Chelsea. Welcome!!!
I love the layering idea….absolute genius!! And with this hot summer weather we’ve been having, smoothies are on my mind 24/7! This for breakfast tomorrow? Yes!
What beautiful colors!! I want that smoothie NOW!
Great post. Great mom. Great author. I got my book on Tuesday and love it so far. Can you believe that you wrote a book? Seriously – great job. You should be so proud of yourself!
Thanks so much, Jen. It seems like so long ago that I wrote it (almost a year ago!), and it was a lot of work. But once I got to read it and share it with others, it really did start to feel real. I’m glad you are enjoying it.
Awww what a sweetheart
. That smoothie looks awesome. I’ve never layered my smoothies before, but now I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for another awesome recipea.
These look positively beautiful!! Oh my goodness – and thick! I hate thin smoothies and shakes.
Do you post daily Mama Pea? Also – how do you do the recipe division between your blog and your cookbook (and future books!) – do you try to not put them all on the blog?
I seen your book again in the store today – if I were you I’d be glowing and want to go see it daily
Have you did any signings at your local stores?
oh, i love that you call your daughter “The Hair”.
also, LOVING the book. i’m a huge, albeit slightly sheepish, fan.
Why are you sheepish? Come here…I’ll give you a big hug.
Oh my goodness this is the cutest thing I’ve ever read! So worth getting up early. Especially if paired with that smoothie! Did yours have any champagne? You know, to start the morning off right?
I should have thought of that!
I love this post! I have been struggling so much with my son lately but it’s those little moments that make it all worth it right?
Sorry things have been rough with your kiddo. We all have those days!
You should hear the narrated version of that book, it’s done by Samuel L. Jackson. It makes it all the more funnier.
I actually work for a non-profit that creates educational ebooks and games for young children. The other designer and myself thought it would be fun to create a book or two like that for the parents, but wasn’t so sure our boss would think it funny =)
Also, I saw your book in Borders the other day and really really really wanted to get it, but had to spend my little bit of money on a book for school instead =( But it looked so amazing, I sat down and read it for a while in the store. Next paycheck, I’m gettin’ it!
Thanks, Amy! I haven’t heard the SLJ version yet, but I’ve heard it’s hilarious. Glad you were able to at least look at the book
Awhile back the audio version of Samuel L. Jackson reading Go the F*ck to Sleep was free on Audible.com for member. I, of course, downloaded. It was hilarious. However, my 7 year old really didn’t get it when he caught me listening to it on the computer in his room. LOL
This smoothie looks great. We purchased a blendtec over the weekend, and tonight I am teaching Smoothies 101 to my husband. I think I will include this as an example. I need to look for green smoothies on your blog. Do you have many of those?
I have a few:

awww this is soooo cute and hilarious.
Thanks for the smoothie recipe! I don’t know if you saw that smoothie recipes are one the things i’d like to see more of in response to what recipeas we want more of (probably not likely since you had sooooooo many comments) or if this was just a great coincidence for me (more likely)! I can’t wait to try it!
And I love what Gigi said, too true! =)
I read all the comments. I give you what you ask for.
Mama Pea, simply put, you’re the BEST! =)
I just saw “that” book at Borders the other day, my husband and I giggled like school children. Now I am going to have to find SLJ reading it. So wrong yet so funny!
I made the Apple Cinnamon Pancakes yesterday morning for my girls, they loved them!
Pea Daddy almost started crying when he read it. He’s primarily in charge of bedtime around here, so it struck a little close to home. Glad your fam liked the pancakes!
Mama Pea–Love, love, love the book! We sound weird, slightly stalker-ish but we cooked up 5 different recipes in 24 hours which has to be some kind of Pea record–I made your crazy good hummus, yogi guacamole, mini tofu frittatas and blueberry scones…and my HUSBAND (insert gasp here) made your falafel last night. What a great resource–and as a busy working mom, i love that everything is less than 45 minutes. Congrats on the book, I can’t wait for the next one
You aren’t “stalkerish,” you are awesome! I’m glad you guys have been eating well and enjoying everything! Can your husband come make our dinner please? Thanks for the awesome feedback. PS I can’t wait for the next one either.
Have you considered dating your blog entries? I was reading one today where you encouraged readers to buy your book this weekend, but wasn’t sure if it was outdated and couldn’t find a date anywhere. Just a suggestion! Good luck with your book. I like your blog. Very funny, and yummy sounding food. Impressive stuff – and a full-time mom too?? Wow! I don’t even have time to try these recipes with my two little ones around . . . I squeak in reading a chapter or two for a giggle, and then I’m off. Bye!
Thanks for the advice, Rachael. We are still adjusting the format of our pages and our theme, unfortunately doesn’t automatically include the dates. I’d still encourage readers to buy the book! All sales up until tomorrow count towards the first week sales! You can also find the dates on the comments, though I agree, that isn’t always useful. Good luck with your little ones and thanks for the support.
Got to love the smile with the missing teeth. I am kind of wondering how the cookie gets chewed up. I guess when there is a will there is a way. Got my book in the mail tonight. Cannot wait to sit down and read up!
i’ve been waiting to respond to this blog–i was whisked away by my husband to a location that i was not sure if i would be charged $15/minute to get on the internet…so i waited….
but yes, i saw the PDF version of the book you mentioned–hilarious…just like you, me and my girlfriends have already come up with the series for the inaugural book….my contribution (and mind you, it comes from having older children now–is why the f#*k don’t you ever listen to me? mommy has some life experience she would like to share with you to save you pain and anguish–but no, you have to want to learn the hard way)….
Ha ha ha. I like your version too. We could have a trilogy!
okay so i made these smoothies with a twist. i didnt have oj so i had to use sunny d, i didnt have pineapple but i did throw in a banana. my strawberry pary didnt freeze like yours so my drink intertwined colors- not layers. but even with the differences- this drink was awesome- my kids and husband loved it! i have also made some of your cookie recipes- they have also been a big hit- cant wait to order your book!!
Thanks Shannon! I’m so glad your family is enjoying our recipeas!
