Tickled By Pickles

IMG_8908

I didn’t want to do it, but you made me.

Well, not exactly you.

You.

IMG_8897

IMG_8905

You and your pickle songs.

Your pickle Band-aids.

IMG_8919

And your pickle literary masterpieces.

IMG_8916

That pose all-important pickle questions.

IMG_8918

Like what you should make to go with these burgers, or these burgers or these burgers for the 4th of July?

I’ve got your answer right here.

Dill Pickle French Fries

Serves 4

Print this recipe!

  • One 15 oz. package Alexia French fries OR 1 lb. russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into fries
  • 1 T. white vinegar
  • 1/2 t. garlic powder
  • 1/2 t. dry mustard
  • 1/4 t. cumin
  • 1 t. dried dill
  • 1/2 t. sea salt

IMG_8888

You can scrub, peel and slice your own potatoes or you can do what I did.

IMG_8929

I’m one tablescape, two “cocktail times” and a Kwanzaa cake away from being Sandra Lee.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

In a large bowl, whisk together vinegar, garlic powder, mustard, cumin and dill.

IMG_8932

IMG_8933

Add in potatoes and toss to coat.

IMG_8934

IMG_8935

Sprinkle with sea salt.

IMG_8936

Spread fries on a baking sheet and bake for 22-25 minutes, turning once during cooking time.

IMG_8940

Serve hot and eat.

IMG_8973

I’m in trouble.

My whole strategy with the Alexia “Reinvent a Classic” fry competition was to try a handful of recipes out in the next few weeks.

I’d share the recipes for the preliminary trials with you as I went.

Basically, giving away the ones that I was fairly certain I wasn’t going to enter.

There’d be no risk in sharing my top secret recipe, no risk that any of the other entrants might borrow my idea and beat me with my own sword.

IMG_8979

Ouch.  That’s one delicious sword.

These fries are salty, they are tangy and they are oh so pickly.

IMG_8955

You know when something tastes so good that even just thinking about it makes your mouth water so much that  you spit all over yourself?  It’s like I’m getting hit with a fire hose right now.

Maybe I’m committing fry contest suicide by sharing the recipe.

But, who knew I’d get it so right the first time around?

IMG_8947IMG_8948

Oh yeah.

IMG_8949

You.

Disclosure: Alexia Foods has provided me with product coupons and monetary compensation for my participation in this program.

  1. Christie says:

I COULD NOT imagine why everyone on FB was getting so excited about fried pickles??!! I thought, ‘how can she possibly be frying a pickle?? Is she breading it??’. LOL! Thank you for the clarification, I will be making these ASAP!!

  2. I am a fuhhhhreak for pickles. Your daughters have good taste. This just convinced me to try fries again!

  3. Jen says:

Wow those look yummy! Looks like Lu enjoyed them too….did she manage to share?

  4. OH, pickle flavored fries! When you said you made pickle fries on Facebook earlier, I though you meant you made fries out of pickles (like battered spears of pickles, fried) I’m glad I was wrong!

  5. Sasha says:

    Oh my!
I love fries and I love dill and this is a match made in (pickle) heaven!

I sure do hope you don’t lose out on your chance at the fry contest.
But if anyone else does enter this, well, we all know where we saw it first!
    God bless!

  6. Kim Simon says:

OK I am thinking you need som people to test this for you and see if they are delish enough for the contest and SIGGGHHHHHHHHHH I will do it for you ok???? On another note…..I made the Yukon Gold White Bean Basil Burgers tonight and they were super good! I only had red potatoes so I used that instead and they were great! Made some spicy roasted sweet tater fries and some grilled yellow and zuchinni squash to go with them. Mmmmmm and it was all so pretty I almost wished I had a blog so I could post a picture….oh well! I will let you know how the pickle fries go!

    • MamaPea says:

Yes, please do test these! In my dream of dreams, a few of you will try each of the fries I’m testing and then tell me which you think is best! It will take the pressure off of me (and psst…I’m not sure I completely trust Pea Daddy’s judgment).

I’m so glad you liked the burgers! Your accompaniments sound great. Feel free to send me a pic anytime you make a recipe and I’ll post it to our Facebook wall!

Keep me posted on those pickle fries :)

  7. CheezyK says:

Oh wow, if I didn’t have a slow cooked curry sitting waiting for me at home I’d make these tonight. Definitely going to give them a go soon though, they sound great (and I don’t even like pickles!).

  8. Amyna says:

I am definitely trying the fries out. I <3 <3 <3 dillweed anything. Also pickles. :)
But most importantly, WHERE on this blessed earth can I find those bandaids?! :O

  9. OMG I don’t know why I haven’t thought of this before – there is a book out there (LITERALLY MY FAVORITE BOOK WHEN I WAS LITTLE, right next to Cat in the Hat) called “Pickle Things”. If they still make it – I know Lulu would love it! I still remember the worlds! “Pickle things you can not eat – like pickle hair and pickle feet”…. (I’m googling right now…)

  10. Anna says:

Aw so sweet! You’re a good Mama! Now if I only liked pickles…

  11. Your daughters are the cutest ever. Seriously.

  12. Mrs. Fish says:

“I’m one tablescape, two “cocktail times” and a Kwanzaa cake away from being Sandra Lee.”
I just busted out laughing when I read that! I just hope I didn’t wait the neighbors.
Oh my goodness, I want these pickle fries stat. Thanks! :)

  13. those look like they would be good. I love drizzling Olive Oil Vinaigrette on our fries.

Not much of a pickle lover but I’ll give these a try.

oh and LOVE alexia sweet potato fries YUM

  14. I saw your tweet earlier today and definitely thought you somehow breaded the actual pickle and fried it. I should’ve known better. These look/sound much better than my visions of that!

  15. These look amazing. You’re already a winner in my book. I am so happy Lulu loves pickles so much cause otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten such an amazing recipe!

  16. Potatoes and dill are definitely a match made in heaven! These sound perfect. I love pickles so I’m sure these would be right up my alley!

  17. kyla says:

Lulu would have been in heaven at my work for the past two days. We made dill pickels and now the walk in fridge smells like a giant pickel.

Better that than the normal smells of a walk in i suppose!

  18. Carie says:

Yes! I knew it! So is the name “Lulu’s Bah Bah Pickle fries”? BTW, she is too cut!

  19. I love the picture of Lulu hugging the pickle jar! :-)

  20. If I could adore you anymore, I do, now that you’ve reference the Kwanzaa cake. Frozen fries probably work better for this anyway.

  21. Your fries look and sound great! My mouth is puckering and watering just READING about that dill!

I have all kinds of dill sauces I like to make…I know you’re not a mayo/vegenaise girl, but I do have a vegenaise-dill based dip/dressing that is great over zucchini pasta. That’s my most recent dill creation.

But gosh, I am going to have to make these for Scott. Dill + potatoes and I can pretty much get away with anything :)

Thanks for sharing your top secret recipe. I know a few other ladies who are participating in this challenge (wish I was!) and they are honest souls :)

  22. Ann Claire says:

Pickle bandaids? That’s genius! And these fries look so good!

  23. Sarah says:

These remind me of some dill fries I had from a vegan food truck- except better because they’re not fried! I’m going to have to try these asap!!!

  24. I absolutely will need to try this recipe. I’m obsessed with pickles!

  25. chand says:

She’s not throwing pickle fits this day!

  26. DARN I was excited about actual fried pickles! I swear they are so good!! These look like an alternative that won’t completely alienate me from my friends and family though. Your daughter and I are two peas cause I love me some pickles – they go with everything! Hahahaa. Love the easy Alexa option too! Thanks Pea Mama.

  27. you are a genius…i’d much rather have pickle-flavored fries!

  28. DebZ says:

the Sandra Lee dig too my Mama Pea love to a whole new level.

  29. Amber K says:

Oh gosh, that looks delicious!! And you’d need a LOT more booze to be Sandra Lee…. ;)

  30. Audrey says:

    Amazing. I must make these!

  31. tina says:

My son would LOVE those! I’ll have to try them!

  32. 1 word: deliciousnessawesomesauceyumtime. Ok. It’s kind of a compound word. ;)

  33. melissa b says:

those look awesome but i have one question…why is everyone hatin on the idea of fried pickles??? fried pickles are AMAZING (i have used a frying method as well as oven “fried” and they are both great) and i bet those pickle fries are too…i cant wait to try the recipe!!!!
btw—i saw a pickle juice sports drink at a sporting goods store the other day and immediately thought of lulu :)

  34. bitt says:

YUMMY! I’ll keep it to that tonight. :-x

  35. Ashley says:

So this is or isn’t your actual entry? haha Somehow I couldn’t figure that out. If it is, I think it’s the perfect flavor that will appeal to the masses while still being unique. Bravo!!!

  36. I am surprised you shared these! I bet you little Lulu was just in heaven. They look amazing. You are amazing. I have no doubt at all that you will think of something even better for the contest and take the prize.

  37. Samantha says:

Your little pickley wee is so adorable! And you have Sandra Lee beat by a long shot lady! It’s a Pea-inspired fest in my kitchen this week with your MMM sauce, Noodle Salad, and Gena’s Pea Worthy Fig Bars…the latter are for teacher gifts. But I might snag one!

  38. I love pickles as much as Lulu! In fact, I want to hug my pickle jar, too. :)

Those fries look amazing! I passed by a bag of pickle-flavored potato chips in the store yesterday. All of these pickle sightings are pushing me to the edge. I’ll probably go on a pickle bender now. Sigh.

  39. lindsay says:

i’m kind of obessed with dill and pickles, so thank you for feeding my obesession.

  40. Kristie says:

I’m another pickle lover who knows Lulu has got it right ;) . Pickle-flavored potato chips are DELICIOUS, but these fries look super amazing… and could pass as part of dinner. Yes!

  41. Therese says:

You can tell I’m from Texas because when I saw your Tweet yesterday, I thought you meant a healthier version of fried pickles! But these sounds amazing too :o )

  42. Mmmm…I love fried pickles, so I’m sure I’d love pickle fries :-)

  43. Lauren says:

Ummm, these sound delicious! A pregnant woman’s dream!

  44. Katie says:

These fries sound so good! I love fries but rarely eat them! Sweet tater fries are my favorite by far!

I missed you Mama Pea! Love the new blog look!

Hope you and the family are well!

    xoxo <3

    • MamaPea says:

Hello, my newly married friend!!!! I missed you too but it seems like everything with the wedding went wonderfully and you were, of course, a very beautiful bride! Congrats again, Katie! <3

  45. Kaitlyn says:

I promise I won’t steal it except to make them for myself!! Those pictures of your daughter are absolutely adorable, great job capturing that mischievous face!!

  46. I nearly spit out my coffee when I read the part about Sandra Lee! Then I really did spit it out when I watched the video. The fries look delicious and your daughter is beyond adorable!

  47. Green Shushi says:

Gahhhh she IS ecstatic! She’s so cute!

So are you not trying any other recipes for the contest?

  48. I don’t even like pickles (maybe it’s just a texture thing, or an appearance thing… not sure!), but dill pickle flavour on the other hand, sounds delicious! I knew you’d come up with something genius for the french fry reinvention!

  49. Katie says:

I might love you even more now… I am trying to bring up a picture memory of my pantry to make sure I have all ingredients needed and will without a doubt be stopping at the store tonight for some Alexia fries! Everyone in my family LOVES pickles (I was like LuLu at that age… convinced I might marry a pickle some day or atleast have pickle flavored wedding cake!) These will be a huge hit! Ill let you know how it goes tomorrow. Thanks for the recipe… You’re the BEST!

    • MamaPea says:

That’s great! Especially because GIGI was the one yesterday who said she wanted to marry these fries. Imagine my surprise! Hope you guys enjoy them!

  50. Libby says:

I’ve got to make those for my son. He is a mad pickle consumer. And just the thought of dill on my fries makes me want to melt! It’s 9 am, but I want some NOW!

  51. Stephanie says:

Hahaha! I really hope none of the other contestants would steal your recipe…although it is funny that two days ago, the husband was reading the materials for the contest and said “ohh dill pickle fries!” and I made a face. And when he said, like dill potato chips, I said I’d never heard of them…That’s ironic right there. ;)

I do need to step up my game if this is submission! :)

  52. Shannon says:

Woohoo! That was my fry flavor request! Awesome! They look super good.

  53. Ana says:

You are the one person I would ever imagine to create pickle fries Mama Pea!!
I am not big on pickles but my son like them a lot, I am sure he would love these fries too!
    Ana

  54. So simple — yet pretty amazing it’s not already out there. I bet they will taste fabulous with some creole honey mustard!!

  55. I am so making 3 different kinds of vegan bean burgers for the 4th of July festivities at my house. I just hope that my family appreciates it! LOL Your pickle fries look like just the perfect compliment! Enjoy your holiday Mama Pea.

PS My business partner made your Con Cookies last night and brought me 1/2 of one (you know I have a problem) to taste this morning. O M f’ing G. I’m almost speechless. You are one amazing chick. I think I can die happy now.

    • MamaPea says:

Really? Thanks, Wendy! I’m glad you broke your “no sugar/added fat” rule for me. Those cookies are worth it :) Have a great 4th–wish I was at your house!

  56. Cait's Plate says:

That’s such a creative idea for the french fries! And I know I always say this, but I can’t get enough of your adorable little daughters!

  57. So creative! I love this idea! And I’m with Lulu on the pickles – they are delicious.

  58. I LOVE this! I just made some salt and vinegar “chips” the other night.. never thought to put dill on them! YUM!

  59. Lisa says:

Like Lulu, I am a HUGE pickle fan and will be making these fries as soon as possible! And finding that book for our baby girl who is due to arrive in August. Your Sandra Lee comment made me laugh (as most of your posts do!), she makes me want to throw things at my television :-)

  60. Carly says:

Those bandaids are brilliant! I love anything dill, and was definitely the weirdest kid in Elementary school requesting Pickled Carrots as my lunchtime snack.

  61. Dill pickle chips are my favorite, so I’m assuming I would absolutely love these fries! I

  62. These look amazing! They’re making my mouth water!

Thank you, Mama Pea…and the pickle lover in your house. :)

  63. Christina says:

We’ve been addicted to dill in my house!! The herb that is. I made some fries the other day and adding dill and garlic really kicked it up! SO good!!

  64. Lori says:

Those sound great. I was going to roast some cauliflower tonight and I think I might use this on my cauliflower!

  65. JavaChick says:

Oh yum. Adding frozen fries to the grocery list.

  66. michelle says:

Why didn’t I think of this???!!! genius.

  67. Tonya says:

I can’t keep up with all these awesome recipes! I just finished the batch of Yukon Basil Bean Burgers I made last week (they do freeze verymwell!!). Spicy tofu tacos were next on the list as soon I get to the store for more maple or agave.

  68. brandi says:

ha! from the facebook post, I TOTALLY thought you REALLY deep fried pickles :)

    This is an awesome idea!

  69. proud military wife says:

Thanks Mama! now I have something else yummy to serve up Sunday…otherwise I was goin’ straight up SL style..cocktails compensating for the food ;) I kid I kid..I too tease because I love..I heart SLee and MPea. I def think you should have a slot right next to her :) I have two girls (7 and 4) and often show them pics of Lu and Gi because they ask why I’m laughing at the computer..they wouldn’t get it if I said..its that darn Sarah chick again..so witty with her jokes :) Thanks for the giggles every day by the way. Cocktails and pickle fries for everyone! Two S’s (that’s a serious second in our house) this weekend, don’t forget to think of everyone still over there fighting for us y’all and send up a prayer…

    • MamaPea says:

Absolutely! Thank you for the reminder! I’m not a big fan of the 4th, mostly because the fireworks scare my kids and my cat (yes, I have a soul after all). But I do need to recognize the courageous and difficult job that your husband, and all of the men and women of the military, are doing for us! I think Sandra Lee would raise a glass to that!

Have a wonderful weekend with your family, Jenn. :)

  70. oh my word! these look so much better than the dill pickle pringles i picked up.

    i love dill.

    and your recipeas.

  71. Ha! I love Sandra Lee humor!

  72. A kiddo after my own heart! My Mom tells me that when I was little I would BEG for pickles and the suck all the juice out of them before eating. …so as you may guess, your dill pickle fry recipe is making my 3 y/o mouth water ;)

  73. How can you make fries even better? By adding dill! Yum! These fries look amazing!

  74. Oh i love pickles. Yup and I love those pickle bandaids!!!! :)

  75. I’ve had dill potato chips before, so I can imagine what these would taste like!!

  76. Danica says:

OMG ~ you are a genius ~ who would’ve ever thought to make dill pickle fries?! I cannot wait to make these for The Husband who eats the Costco size of dill pickles a week!!

Oh and there i the whole I’ve been pickling everything lately and am completely addicted to pickled veggies and peppers!

thanks for the recipe ~ I am so with you ~ my mouth is watering and I haven’t even tried it LOL.

  77. Danica says:

P.S. this totally reminds me of the pickled popcorn we had at BlogHERFood – another idea to try with your mix! Ok, I am done…really :)

    danica

  78. haha i have those same bandaids! my boyfriend buys me something pickley every christmas because i love pickles so much. i must make these fries…

  79. aquarius says:

Fried pickles are delicious but these sound good too!

  80. Oh wow…. I don’t even care for pickles but these look fan-freaking-tastic!

  81. sarah says:

Oh man, those look so good! I watched the Sandra Lee video with my 7 yr old watching and she just kept saying ‘oh my, oooohhhh gross mommy!’. So funny. Did you watch the youtube clip of sandra lee induced seizure, kinda funny…
Trying your fries this weekend–thanks for sharing!

  82. lisampls says:

these. look. amazing! my husband is going to re-propose to me after i make these tonight! thank you SO much. not like you need another item on your todo list, but…have you ever considered a “reviews” section on your recipe page? sometimes if i’m deciding between multiple recipes (you MUST know that i LITERALLY reference your reciPea page DAILY for meals, snacks or treats) it would be fun to see which reciPeas i absolutely must try first. for example, how do i possibly choose between those three burgers??? i want to make ALL of them tonight. but then i would have to ignore the baby. best wife + worst mommy = failure. ;)

anyways, you’re rockin’ it Mama Pea. perhaps we shall just have a pan of fries for dinner. followed by a pan of Single Chin Brownies. skip the burgers. save room for brownies. it’s friday. that’s how i roll. Xo!

(Pea Readers: which burger should we try FIRST?)

  83. Sarah says:

Having read your post yesterday mornning, I went into our local charity shop at lunchtime and saw THIS
    http://www.amazon.com/Gamewright-106-In-A-Pickle/dp/B00074FYAA
Seriously. Was tempted to post it to you all the way from Dublin, but surprise surprise, it’s on Amazon. I am also somewhat disturbed by the people who “also bought” http://www.amazon.com/Accoutrements-Dill-Pickle-Flavored-Mints/dp/B003JIFECO/ref=pd_sim_t_5
Thanks for all the great recipes!

  84. I’ve never been that into pickles – but these look like they could change my mind! What I really want to know though, what was the “free prize” in the box of plasters?!

  85. Emily says:

Yum, these look SO flavorful! What a deliciously creative idea!

  86. geez louise. this is crack!!!
    happy 4th of july!

  87. Jared says:

I just made these and they were delicious! Salty and tangy perfection.

  88. Tanya says:

Ha! Those actually look awesome…..never would’ve thought of that combination. I like my oven baked fries every once in a while….will have to try these :)

  89. Marianne says:

When I saw all the ruckus on twitter about these dill pickle fries, I thought they would have involved actual dill pickles, like many of the above commentors. I was imagining a crispy coated spear of dill pickle, oven baked, to replace the delicious (all be it heart attack inducing) deep fried dills you can get at a variety of fish n chip and burger joints around here. So although I’m disappointed this was not the case (and I will now need to go out in search of some deep fried dills because of it), these fries do look damn good.

  90. Bonnie says:

While shopping today I saw these http://www.bobspicklepops.com/ and immediately thought of Lulu!

  91. Libby says:

I made these last night with Tzatziki sauce and Greek-inspired Burgers. Was absolutely delicious – thanks! Although I don’t plan to give up meat anytime soon, I’m definitely going to pick up your book – your writing is so funny!

Check out my meal here: http://islandofconsumption.wordpress.com/2011/07/27/greek-burgers-with-tzatziki-and-dill-fries/

  92. Mama Pea, I just used this seasoning mix on our pumpkin seeds which are roasting in the oven right now. Our kitchen smells like one big pickle. I love it. :)

  93. Oman! These sound awesome! I think I am going to try th tonight with sweet potatoes! Do you think it will work, we gave up white potatoes a while back?? We are having vegitarian falafals, and this would make a great side I think..

    • MamaPea says:

I’m not sure how the sweet potato/salty would work, but you could try it! There is also a curry sweet potato fry on the recipe page that you might like better.

  94. elizabeth says:

Smell and taste so good and no oil! I love dill. Thank you.
