A Pea at BEA

IMG_7685

When my editor called to invite me to Book Expo America, I must admit, I had no idea what it was.  But for an opportunity to go to New York City, to have a few days of quality time with myself, a respite from tutu mending, hair detangling, elderly mens’ resort wear folding and angry cat avoiding sounded heavenly.  Throw in the requirement for a new cocktail dress and the promise of dinner at Blossom and I became the new Urban Dictionary definition of “geeked up.”

I soon learned that BEA is one of the two largest book expos in the world and the place where major publishing houses promote their most anticipated upcoming releases.  The result is a huge conference center filled with booth after booth of book publishers, industry players and authors there to meet-and-greet while handing out autographed copies of their books.  As my friend and author Rebecca Coleman put it, it’s like a huge bookstore where all the books are free!

Let’s overlook the fact that our book hasn’t been published yet.

Before heading to the expo, I did a little sightseeing.  From the hotel gym.

It’s safer that way.

People watching during cardio is a dream come true, second only to eating during cardio, which is the only reason I ever was a long-distance runner.  An excuse to carry jelly beans in a fanny pack?  Yes, please.

After ‘sight seeing,”I met my editor Sarah for lunch at a nearby vegetarian restaurant, Zen Palate

IMG_7678.

IMG_7679

The book has been a labor of love for Sarah and I, but thankfully we have always shared the same vision for the book and the same taste in food.

IMG_7680

Kale and Seaweed Salad

Okay, so I avoided the seaweed…

IMG_7682

Temple of Zen—green beans, squash, carrots, broccoli, snow peas, mushrooms, cabbage, tofu and kale

Sarah used lunch as an opportunity to submit a few Wannabe Recipeas of her own (vegan, gluten-free matzo, anyone?) and then we were off to the expo.

IMG_7687

Nestled in the heart of the convention center was the Harlequin booth.

You needed to take a sharp right at Flava Flav to get there.

IMG_7694

Or should I say “best-selling author, Flavor Flav?”  Really?!

But back to the Harlequin booth and the exciting discovery of seeing our cover up in lights.

IMG_7691-2.

Narcissistic, much?  I’m one gold tooth away from wearing a clock around my neck and a paper crown.

While I didn’t have any books to sign, I did have a hefty stack of book previews, known as BLADs (book layout and designs).  I wasn’t sure what kind of draw I’d get but was surprised to find an excited group lined up, including a few readers, like Katie,

IMG_7689-2

as well as a few future readers.

IMG_7690

Get it?  BEA-by?  You know how I love a good pun.

The signing was a blast and I loved meeting everyone who came up to the booth and sharing our excitement about the book.

A celebration was in order.

IMG_7695

Sarah, my agent Lisa, Olivia Wilde and I headed to Blossom.  Okay, technically Olivia Wilde didn’t go with us.  But she did eat near us.  And here I thought Flav would be my big brush with celebrity.

The real star at Blossom, though, was the some of the most delicious vegan food I’ve ever eaten.  Next to mine. (See, I’m getting this promoting thing down.)

We ate family-style, starting with the Blossom Greens.

IMG_7700

Mixed greens, sweet cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, jicama, carrots, tamari-toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds in a ginger teriyaki lime dressing.

The dressing on this was slightly tangy, slightly salty, slightly sweet and totally delicious.

Next came the life-changing Ravioli in Cashew Cream.

IMG_7699

I will be making this.  With the rich creamy sauce covering tender pasta stuffed with a spinach pinenut filling studded with tempeh bacon, I wanted to put on my sleep mask (okay, Breathe Right strip), crawl into the middle of the doughy pillow and call it a night.

But there was more to come.

Like the excellent Lasagna,

IMG_7702

Tapioca cheese, ground seitan, and roasted eggplant, over marinara and sautéed broccoli rabe

the superb Pistachio and Peppercorn Dusted Tofu,

IMG_7704

Served over roasted root vegetable crepe and a lemon truffle emulsion. andf inished with frisee salad tossed in red beet vinaigrette.

and finally the surprising additional favorite of the Port Wine Seitan.

IMG_7703

Seitan cutlets pan-seared in a sauce of port wine and mushrooms, accompanied by creamy mashed potatoes, tempura onion, and sautéed garlic spinach.

I mean this in the most complimentary way, but this tasted like Sweet and Sour Chicken from the best Chinese restaurant you ever ate at.  Except, bonus: nobody died.

Definitely a memorable meal.

Quintessential New York.

Quintessential vegan gourmet.

Quintessential reason to wear dresses with pockets to store leftover seitan in.

Or a fanny pack.

After dinner we celebrated more with a cocktail party at the Kimberly Hotel’s rooftop bar overlooking the city.

IMG_7705-2

The perfect ending to a dream-like day that left me filled with such an appreciation for everyone at Harlequin and all the work they have done for me and this project.

Well, it was almost the perfect ending.

Ahh, that’s better.

Until next time New York!

  1. I LOVE family style restaurants! I am extremely indecisive when it comes to ordering, so famo style is just perfect! I can’t wait until your book comes out #loveyourrecipes

  2. Gena says:

BEA is something I will not miss. At all. But I was never a star author, either ;-)

Your Blossom meal looks superb — and I have experienced the bliss of those ravioli! Also glad that Zen Palate worked out so well. I should have stopped by for the seaweed !

  3. babs says:

That cream sauce looks heavenly. Puhlease, puhlease recreate it!

  4. Your outfits were wonderful! I think I will have to check out your book. I just think you’re so funny! I bet you felt like a kid in a candy store in that incredible restaurant. To be able to eat anything on the menu is such a treat.

  5. I’m so excited to see your book in the stores very soon.
Your meal at Blossom looks AMAZING. What are the two things on top of the ravioli that look like egg yolks? I’m guessing tomatoes?

  6. OH my gosh all that food has me drooling. And you’re pretty much a celeb yourself now! So exciting! :) Glad you had a good time!

  7. Kelly says:

I’m just so dang proud of you. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you’re amazing. I’ll text you tomorrow, hopefully we’re still on for our date! Safe travels home!

  8. Marina says:

I’d do most anything for a free dinner at Blossom! lol I had my birthday dinner there this year and got the exact same things (the lasagna and I tried the ravioli that my friend got!). Congrats on the book, I’ll be looking out for it!

  9. Amanda says:

I just bought a ton of cashews and need to start making cashew cream sauces and such. That ravioli made me drool a little bit. I can’t wait until you recreate it!

Once again, your hair looks awesome in these pictures! I love it!

  10. Not sure what I’m most jealous of: NYC vegan eats, free books, seeing celebrities or a grown up night out. It all sounds wonderful! Yay for you and all you’ve accomplished in the last year.

  11. Char says:

WOW, wow, wow to that wonderful food!! Please recreate it ALL!! You look wonderful by the way!!!

  12. Omg this post is awesome!!! aka, your life the past few days has been awesome!!

“to have a few days of quality time with myself, a respite from tutu mending, hair detangling, …”–
I actually have a trip like that planned for myself. Two of them, to be exact. Haha!

The meal with Sarah, the tofu and the cauli chunk laying there…that meal looked awesome.

Then moving right onto Blossom. The best vegan food you’ve ever had? High praise!!! And yes, the cashew cream sauce would probably be fairly easy for you to recreate…I know we will see it soon. Yum in advance!

You look wonderful, btw. Your hair, your outfits, you’re glowing. And when you speak of this book as “we” or “our”..that’s very gracious of you but it’s YOUR book :)

  13. Adam Deane says:

Oh my gosh, I am so psyched for you! You look so happy and you have every reason in the world to be! I have decided your book is going to be the official Christmas gift for my entire family this year. Everyone needs to see how good they can eat, and how lovely the Pea family is :)

  14. bitt says:

NYC is always a blast! I would be totally geeked up about a book festival. I love books. Almost as much as reading blogs.

Those meals look amazing. I need to get back to NYC soon, and try out some of those places. I avoided Blossom due to it looking gluten-y, what was your take?

  15. This all looks fabulous! How exciting that your book cover was on display! :)

  16. I think the who thing is amazing.. but my favorite picture is the one at the end where you are chatting with your fam! :) Priceless. I am sure you all miss each other dearly!

  17. allison says:

“a huge bookstore where all the books are free” –>i so need to get in there!!!! I’m glad you are having an awesome time with tons of awesome food which you will kindly recreate for all of us to enjoy:) But i’m sure you are even happier to be home in your own bed…even if you have to share with pea kitty;)

  18. What an exciting day! Its so cool to see your book cover all lighted up and on display!

  19. Katie says:

So glad the event and day went great! How cool they had your book cover up like that ! U look so pretty too! I bet it feels so surreal! How amazing right? Your book will be available for every one to have very soon! Im so happy for you!

How cute, best way to end the night for sure, seeing your three loves!

    Happy Weekend!! xoxo <3

  20. so awesome I’d be like a kid in a candy store with all those books and they are free.
the food you ate looks so yummy.

so glad you were able to go and experience it all next year you will have books to sign and who knows working on a second book a cookbook for kids ??? heee heee just joking.

can’t wait to get your book I want to feature it for my kids cook monday post that week. :)

  21. Vicki says:

    Dear Mama Pea,

I got addicted to your blog about two weeks before going on holiday to India for a month. My boyfriend couldn’t believe how many hours I spent reading the old articles. Now that I am back, I am looking forward to catch up on your last posts – and start trying your recipes. Funky Monkey Pie was fabulous!

  22. Your NY time looks absolutely amazing. You must have been so proud of yourself!

  23. How cool to see your book cover up in lights!!! You should be so proud, as I’m sure you have put countless hours/weeks/months into that book. How exciting!

  24. Lauren says:

You look fabulous Sarah! This is so exciting for you and I couldn’t be happier as this turn of life embraces you. Congrats again! (if i haven’t said it enough already! ;)

  25. You look gorgeous Mama Pea! Love your outfit at the expo. What an exciting trip, with delicious food too! Do you know if the book will be available in Canada soon after its release in the US? Would love to get my hands on a copy!

  26. So cool! Glad that you are living life to it’s fullest, and looking gorgeous while you are at it!

  27. You look fabulous–especially love your cream top and pencil skirt! Looks like you did NYC in fine style!

  28. Kristy says:

Can’t wait for that ravioli recipe.

  29. Janelle says:

Looks like such a fun trip; it’s my dream to get published someday. :)

Oh, and I made your Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Balls Light last night; yum! Is it wrong that I ate one for breakfast?

    • MamaPea says:

If you have any questions about the publishing process, ask away and I’ll tell you what I know!

And if dough balls for breakfast is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

  30. Susan G says:

What an awesome time. So happy for you.

I am stumped by the orange things in the ravioli that look like egg yolks. What are they?

  31. congrats, Mama Pea! yay for you! yay for your book!

i cannot wait to read it!! you are such a gifted writer. i so look forward to reading your blog each morning!

  32. It felt so good to be away this weekend and have some time for my own things when I went to Fitbloggin. But it is always nice to come home – rejuvenated for more mom madness. :) Your trip looks fabulous. And you do too.

PS – Having to fuel runs is one of the #1 reasons I picked it over my previous sport of fitness. LOL

  33. brandi says:

It sounds like it went great! And how fun to see the cover lit up like that :)

If I buy 100 books, will you take my shopping sometime? You always looks SO fantastic and have the cutest clothes. If you suggested it, I might even wear a tutu.

    • MamaPea says:

Oh thanks! I do love pretty clothes, but I’m just starting to feel okay about spending money on them for myself. When you are a mom, the kids come first! So they’ve always been the ones with the cute clothes. :)

  34. Ahh I wish I knew you were going to be there! I totally would have skipped work to come visit :)

  35. Audrey says:

    Yum! BLOSSOM looks awesome!

And may I say, you have terrific choice in clothes. :) You need to do a fashion post sometime.

    • MamaPea says:

My fashion post would be: I walk into a store, try some things on and buy what fits and what I like. I wish there was something more glamorous to describe, but there’s not!

  36. Katy Widrick says:

You look so happy in the picture next to your book cover — I’m so proud of you for enjoying the moment but also being so humble and happy about what waits for you at home.

    • MamaPea says:

Thanks! I am really happy and proud, but I never want to seem like I’m bragging or self-absorbed. That’s why I always say “our book.” So many people were involved in this project, and I really do feel like it’s all of OUR book–from my family to the readers! So thank you for the congratulations!

  37. I LOVE how all of that food looks! I would have crawled right into the ravioli AND the lasagna. I’m drooling here!

  38. So much fun!! – and ohh, Flava Flav….I laughed out loud at that pic of him. Jealous of your brush with Olivia Wilde though!!

  39. Mackenzie says:

Oh. My. Word. Cashew cream sauces make my world go ’round. Quite literally.

  40. My mom read about the book expo and was like “You should go to it, you like books!” She thought it was just like a meeting for book enthusiasts, with a Kindle burning session somewhere in there.

I’ve been dying to go to Blossom and after seeing that ravioli plate, I might quit my job and just go right now.

  41. Maggie says:

I’m sad I missed you at BEA (I work for a publisher)! I definitely would have stalked, I mean found, you. I should have figured that was why you were in NYC.

And you’re now the 4th person to show me (and all your other readers…) a picture of Flava Flav. He was the big news on Wednesday, haha.

  42. what fun to talk to the girls via computer; great pictures

  43. hippierunner says:

You’re so pretty and I love your BEA outfit! All the food looks amazing, I especially want to try the Sweet and Sour Chicken. Mama Pea, I think you posted the same picture (lasagna) twice. Are you testing us to see how thoroughly we read? ;)

  44. Amber K says:

Jealous of your brush with celebrity ;)

Trying to find a vegetarian gluten-free friendly restaurant is soooo hard to find, but I wonder if I’d have a better chance in a bigger city!

  45. Jacquelynn says:

Wow! That food looks soooo yummy! You will have to re-create the ravioli soon…

  46. Hello, Mrs. New Dreena Burton :-) Wowza, you’re a celebrity now and I can only imagine come the book being published how much more famous you’ll be!
All the food looks scrumptious– as it would with veggie food in NY. So fun to read about your travels.

  47. Carly says:

How incredibly exciting! If Flava Flav is a best selling author, just think of how amazing YOUR book will do!
One of the main reasons I loathe being allergic to nuts, is cashew cream sauces. I will never get to try/enjoy/fall in love with them!

  48. Kelsey says:

how exciting! glad you had such a great time. I heart blossom :)

I’m so excited for your book!!!

  49. Ang says:

What a dream!!! What an opportunity!!! And I must say~ aside from your experience, your hair and clothes looked amazing! Amazing! I’m so jealous, in a really healthy way:) I’m so happy for you.

    • MamaPea says:

Well, you know, the hair is totally because of you. I don’t know what I’d do without you. Hope you guys had a nice weekend at the lake!

  50. Gillian says:

Ok I got teary eyed in the ending there.

I can’t wait to buy your book. And you are more radiant every time I see you. Hot mama pea!

  51. ch says:

I am so insanely jealous that you got to eat dinner “with” Olivia Wilde. She is one of my three fave actresses. Next time, I need you to get her autograph for me, ok?

  52. All that food looks delicious! I totally would have taken your seaweed off your hands for ya….I love me some seaweed salad!!!!

  53. Jen says:

Sounds like you had a great time in NY..including seeing Flava Flav! I’m sure that just made your whole trip ;) Seeing your photos makes me miss NY..been 6 years since the last time i’ve vacationed there. I know EXACTLY where I will be heading for eats next time I go though! Cannot wait to see your version of those ravioli…I am already drooling!

  54. kate says:

what a fun trip, I cant wait for your book!

  55. Livvy says:

kale and seaweed salad!??! WHAT! YUM! LOVE your sign though! that’s incredible how far you’ve come! and I’ve been reading for years too! ahh great congratulations to you, your blog and your family! LOVE ya! ps all your vegan eats, ESPECIALLY that creamy cashew ravioli, look AMAZING! Thanks so much for sharing your photos and great words with us! I love your blog:)

  56. Can it be that I’m the only one who’s going to come right out with a huge “FLAVOR FLAAAAAAAAAAAAV!!!!” ?

I am disappointed in my fellow readers. ;) Also not sure how you resisted shouting that right at him.

Actually, I think that is how I will greet you next time–you are the closest degree of separation I will ever have from the Flav himself.

PS The comment I made yesterday about how ironic it is that I rarely travel, even though I’m in the biz, lasted about as long as Flav’s last marriage. Russia in July. Can you lend me a tutu?

    • MamaPea says:

Seriously? My how things change quickly. This is after Madrid, right? Yes, you really do never travel.

And in my head I was screaming, “Flava Flaaaaaav!” I didn’t want to get too close to him for fear he would mistake me for Bridgette Nielsen and try to grope me.

      • Russia is actually BETWEEN now and Madrid, which is in October. Good thing I renewed my passport!

Mistaking you for Brigitte Nielsen would be like mistaking coconut chai for Busch Light. Not possible, my friend.

  57. Okay, that food looks delicious, again. I’m jealous you could try that ALL. Really.
BEA looks like a great experience, you look stunning on the picture next to you bookcover.

PS : Please help me choose from the cooking books listed on The Veggie Eco-Life!

  58. Eden says:

You took NYC by storm. I’m a little late reading this so I couldn’t “start spreadin the news”. You should be so proud of yourself.
    Have a safe trip home.

PS:Kind of crazy jealous that you and Flav are BFFs.

    • MamaPea says:

Ha ha, thanks Eden. I have to say, after your last post, I thought maybe you were boycotting P&TY as being to “self-promot-y.” I never want to come across like that, so I’m counting on you to give it to me straight! :)

  59. Wow, congratulations! That’s not narcissistic at all to post that picture; it must have been such a proud moment, and all down to your hard work :-)

    • MamaPea says:

Thanks, Eleanor. It just feels a little silly. I very much love what I do, so it’s hard to feel proud of something that is so much fun. :)

  60. Brittany says:

MamaPea does NYC – I love it! I’m so excited for your book to come out!

I wanted to try Blossom when I was in New York for my b-day but they didn’t have space for us. I did try their smaller cafe called Blossom Du Jour though – it was delicious.

  61. YOU ARE GORGEOUS!! Such an exciting and fun trip:)

  62. Emily says:

How exciting, congrats with your book! You look fabulous!
And I stayed with my mom at the Kimberly when she came down for my half-marathon, it’s a great hotel!

  63. Erin says:

Mama Pea! I made this delicious Chai last night (somehow managing to save some for later!) and added some to this morning’s iced coffee…i highly recommend this combination! I love your curiously culinary brain! :)

  64. Hayley says:

I’m so glad I went back to re-read all of your posts…I would’ve hated to miss this one. We have a trip to NYC lined up for October, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can convince Chris to go to Blossom. Never heard of it, but damn does that food look good!!! It helps to have such a salivating description. Not sure that last bit made sense, but oh well. Thanks for “taking us” with you! :)

  65. Hayley says:

Ok HOW could I not comment on the fact that you were at one of the world’s biggest book expos?! That is HUGE and deserves major congratulations. To prove just how out of it I really am I’m going to unabashedly admit that I always thought Flava Flav was a girl..

  66. Tammy says:

I love that lunch box! Can you tell me where you got it?
