Wacky Wednesday: Back at the Homestead
I’m spent from a long but amazing day at Book Expo America, complete with celebrity sightings, one of the most incredible meals of my life, and a cocktail party at a rooftop bar.
Before you get too impressed you should know that my feet are swollen to the point of elephantiasis, I inadvertently and embarrassingly dropped and shattered my water glass at the party like I was mad at it and I just spent the last fifteen minutes skyping misty-eyed with the rest of the family. It was a nice return to normalcy to tell people to stop picking their nose thousands of miles away. (Seriously, Pea Daddy, get a tissue.)
I’m sure, like me, you are all wondering what exactly is going on at home. And what on Earth are they eating? I asked Pea D to document their meals for the day, and he begrudgingly agreed. He warned me, “I just don’t want to be turned into jokes or punch lines.” I have no idea where Picky McBoogerton would get such an idea.
I was provided no explanation or descriptions—just photos which I shall try to interpret, punch line free. It ain’t going to be easy.
Breakfast
Spelt toast, blackberry jam & fruit salad
Pea D usually gets the girls breakfast while I work out, so this is nothing new. I can tell this is Lulu’s because she always uses the red heart plate and the one time I gave her a different plate instead, she spoke in tongues and her head spun around three times.
Ballet Snacks
Fruit leathers, Newman’s Own Honey Wheat Pretzels, dried mango, Cookie Dough Larabar
I suggested apple slices. But at least we know that everyone in the house will be regular when I get home.
???
Great Harvest Cheese Breadstick
I have no idea when or why this was consumed by Lulu. All I know is her life is all about cheese.
Lunch
Gigi got to experience lunch at school this week, something I was worried about seeing that 1) this would be her first impression of the school’s hot lunches; 2)I knew I would have to pack something a million times better than soggy pizza or chicken nuggets (the two offerings) to dissuade any future pleas for hot lunch; and 3) this would be impossible since I wouldn’t be there to pack it.
But, as you know, I left specific instructions.
Gigi’s Lunch
Apple juice, Annie’s Organics Cheddar Bunnies, spelt bread with natural peanut butter and honey, organic green grapes, a Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ball frozen to preserve just for these purposes
A dough ball is a million times better than hot lunch. Mission accomplished.
Lulu’s Lunch
Organic cheese sandwich on spelt bread (as you know, I left specific instructions), Annie’s Organics Cheddar Bunnies, organic berries, baby carrots, organic cherry tomatoes
There’s no way she ate those carrots. I wouldn’t eat those carrots.
Dinner
I had high hopes they’d pick something from the long list of suggestions, including whole wheat spaghetti, Field Roasts and sweet potato fries, homemade whole grain pita pizzas and maybe even serve a green vegetable or two on the side.
Nope.
Wait, I see some green!
Tostada pizza on whole grain crust
That’s totally Pea Daddy’s. At least someone is getting a little foliage.
Kid’s cheese pizza with pineapple on whole grain crust
No need for explanation there. It’s CHEESE pizza.
Was it everything I’d planned?
No.
Was it full of a complex variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains?
Not entirely.
Was it still an admirable job by a wonderful, if not culinary-challenged, husband and father of keeping his family on a meatless/plant-heavy diet without a very grateful and appreciative Mama Pea around?
Absolutely.
And that’s no joke.

I’m here to copy your link and pass it onto a friend. You are probably the only blog I push on people like this. Am I kinda like a pimp? “Try this girl, she’s good…”
You can pimp me out anytime. We just need a good pimp name for you.
I pimp you out all the time too! I don’t have kids but lots of friends do and they love all your healthy meal ideas!
Thanks for pimping!!! You are the best!
I’m impressed. Please tell me you went to the Jeffrey Eugenides breakfast at the expo today
Being a total bibliophile I am crazy jealous that you are there!
I didn’t! I slept in and got ready for my signing. But it was an amazing atmosphere at the Expo. I’ll post all about it tomorrow!
I am so sorry about the water glass. Oy vey. Just what you DIDN’T need but you sound like you’re handling it in total stride. Isn’t traveling just the ultimate way to break one out of the ole comfort zone and just pretty much have to wing it and keep on smiling, no matter what? Sorry for your foot! Ouch!!!
“Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ball frozen to preserve just for these purposes” — I freeze raw and nobake dough balls of all kinds. I have a half dozen varieties in my freezer at any one time just b/c I never know what Im going to feel like. So I am prepared. lol
I saw Gena’s post about your time together. And her fig bars she made for you. I’m jealz.
And Pea Daddy is doing GREAT! He’s a champ!!! The fact that the kids have clothes on and their hair is brushed and DONE…that’s all we can hope for (well with my hubs, that’s all i can hope for…ha!)
Frozen doughballs stocked away just for these situations. Genius.
I’ll be keeping that in mind the next time I travel solo; my husband resorts to pb and honey sandwiches exclusively while I’m away… At least it’s vegetarian? Ha
Absolutely. As I like to say, “Nobody died.”
Hi I’m Chelsey and walk into things and fall over myself on a regular basis. Hello tripping on the stairs with a cute Senior behind you Freshman year. I feel your pain.
Sounds like an awesome time! Glad there was beautiful weather for you!
oh my goodness, he ACTUALLY cut Gigi’s pb&h into a heart shape (as you questionably suggested in the notes, that cracked me up!). i read that and thoughtv”um, yeah…there is NO way even i’d take that on if i were playing Mr. Mom.” really, Mama Pea, what more could a woman ask for!??! beyond impressed.
And he got someone to take a picture of them together! That would never happen here (though we did have a spontaneous cat crazies video filmed in the privacy of our own home while I was gone).
Hurry back – the Whiffies pie cart has a new Vegan Jackfruit (savory) pie that’s all the rage!
I wonder if the food carts are open tomorrow night at 10 pm…
Mr. Booger Picker cut Gigi’s sandwich into a heart? That is true daddy love right there. Good job Pea Daddy.
Word.
Oh, don’t fall down in NYC! I once totally bit it in the middle of Rockefeller Center at lunchtime and not one single person helped me up. You are on your own, sister.
I would have helped you up.
what a great Dad!
We are so lucky
What a fabulous job he’s doing! Some of my best memories of my dad are from the times he was ‘in charge’ when mum was away (including the curried sausages that were soooo hot that my brother and I didn’t have to finish our main and got to have ice cream for dessert – unheard of in our house).
I don’t have a clue what curried sausages are, but you and your brother sure did pull a fast one.
Hehe, it’s basically a dish with cooked, chopped sausages, vegies and curry powder with rice – in the case of this particular time, lots and lots of curry powder (so burn your mouth off spicy hot not just too long in the oven hot). But yeah, he could be an easy push over and we pulled a few fast ones in our time.
Can I have the ballet snack? Please? Dried mango makes the world go round.
I think this is one of my favorite posts ever. I hope my husband cuts our non existent kids sandwiches into hearts. So sweet. Every time you talk about how Lulu’s life is “all about cheese” it makes me crack up. love her
Me too.
Props to superdad! I think some guys would “forget the camera” and forget to pack such awesome lunches as well. The heart shaped peanut butter sandwich makes my heart melt. Do you have a shape cutter for those?
We just use a cookie cutter. And yes, he’s a pretty super dad
I always loved when my mom would go on retreats and conferences and it would just be my dad in charge of me and my two sisters cause we knew there would be very little healthy food (if any) and a whole lotta sugar!! But the best part of it was when she would get home:):):)
Oh and make sure to keep your feet elevated whenever possible! Elephantiasis and heels dont mix too well lol;);)
I hope the best part for the girls is when I get home too…and that it has nothing to do with the presents in my bag.
Aw, Pea Daddy did well considering the situation. I would be lucky if my husband remembered to even feed the kids. LoL Just kidding.
My girls would never let him forget.
Pea Daddy is a good man and father!
Im glad the trip went well!
Have a beautiful day! xoxo <3
I love this! Looks like Pea Daddy did really well… I could see things going a whole lot worse!
pea daddy rocks, totally!!! but wait, did you say that lulu spoke in tongue and her head spun around three times? o.m.g … hilarious! on another note, i noticed on startling omission … SECOND BREAKFAST. yes, did the girls get second breakfast? lol.
Ahh, dear Barbara. You see, 2nd Breakfast is the breakfast that I fix five minutes after Pea D leaves. And since I wasn’t there to con into making a 2nd Breakfast, it fell by the wayside. But it will be back in full effect tomorrow, I have no doubt.
How sweet! Sadly, I think he did better than I ever could
Not bad, PD. But we should talk about the cheese
I think Lulu is going to be the harder sell. Good luck with that one.
wow I have to say he did tons better then my hubby would do. lucky for me I have the girls trained and they can pretty much feed themselves
I can top the shattering the glass I knocked off a glass full of his favorite candy on our priest office table and it shattered I was mortified. For a while after he would tease me and say remind me never to ask you to bring the offering. Gee Thanks!!!!
i bet PD loved getting to spend some time with his girls…and it looks like they had a lot of fun!
I’d rather have the ‘cold’ lunch any day. I wish I had a mum like you while I was growing up! Has anyone ever mentioned that your husband, Peadaddy, looks a bit like Mike Miller who plays for the Miami Heat?
Nice work Pea Daddy. He definitely gets extra credit for the heart shaped sandwich. I suggest you pick up a root beer on the way home from the airport.
I had to laugh at LuLu speaking in tongues about the wrong plate. That happens far too often at my house too over such serious matters as who gets the Dora fork and who gets the biggest strawberry.
We have a case of root beer left over from the party. I think someone intentionally overshot our root beer consumption estimates.
What a Guy!! He’s working hard to keep the Girls on an even course while you’re doing your job. So hard to be so far from the family. I’m sure sure you’re knocking them dead in NYC!!
I tried! And now I’m happy to be going home!
I think Pea D did a pretty good job! I was also big on the PB & honey sandwiches as a kiddie, but unfortunately it was just on regular bread as opposed to spelt which I’d far rather eat now!
And for the record, I am a carrot-a-holic, and not even I would have eaten those 2 little babies!
I am a carrot-a-holic too. 10 lbs a week usually. Eep.
Gigi’s lunchbox may be the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. Where did you find it, or did you make the front decal? I’m in love! Also, both the girls’ lunches are healthier than what I used to bring as a kid (bologna and cheese on white bread with mayo, pudding, maybe a piece of fruit or carrots, and always Cap’n Crunch — shudder!). I’m impressed with Pea Daddy.
We bought it online with a Groupon
I’ll try to find out the name of the retailer for you!
Good job Pea Daddy! He even cut Gigi’s sandwich into a heart shape. That is adorable.
I’m impressed!
I’m leaving for 6 days in a couple weeks and I’m frightened what my husband might feed our son. A very detailed list WILL be made.
I can just scan and email my list to you if you want and save you the legwork
Why do I think it’s so funny when guys try to do domestic things? i’m such a biiiiotch, i must think they are all incompetent which i know isn’t the case! ….usually
Gigi’s lunchbox is so cute! Lulu needs to meet my little 2 year old cousin. I was babysitting her yesterday, and all she wanted was “cheese pease.”
Maybe that will be the name of Lulu’s memoir…
I didn’t realize you were in NYC for book expo! I volunteer for our Jewish Book and Arts Fair and some people went for that. I hope you made great connections!
I had to laugh at those carrots. We have the same thing in our house – “but really, you can’t taste the white stuff!”
I could never judge Pea Daddy’s meals for the girls; they still ate better than I do at times! Not to mention my mom is the Food Service Manager at our school, so I ALWAYS had hot lunch… at least until I was old enough to pack my own lunch. Haha.
Did you like it?
Actually, I didn’t mind it (except for a couple of things… like corn dogs! Whoever thought that was a good idea!?). My family didn’t have a lot growing up–not that we were desperately poor or anything, but I pretty much took any food that came my way… which has perhaps made it even harder to learn healthy eating now that I do have more options. How can I turn down any food when food is a gift to be thankful for? It’s a slow process to unlearn that and to realize that my body is a gift too, and that some ways are better to care for it than others.
Actually, this morning I’ve been contemplating my strange relationship to food. I mean, growing up with a mom is who is a school food service manager and family and friends who are dairy farmers, it’s hard for me to reject some of that even though I question how healthy it is. I know that they are good people with good intentions trying to make a living; plus I’ve been in the kitchen and walked the farms and seen that their work is done with love. It makes me very frustrated with the systems of food in our country, and how so many decision are made on a financial basis, but not on a holistic and healthy one. (Wow, I’m getting really emotional about food this morning; sorry!).
Thanks for this response. You have an interesting perspective about something I am equally passionate about! We need more people like you!
Pea Daddy did such a great job! That’s awesome. I love how you set up all sorts of meals and instructions for him, hehe.
For all the good it did me
Pea Daddy did a great job- maybe you can take a “day off” more often
You’re lucky that Gigi can take peanut butter to school. My daughter isn’t allowed because many of the other kids have allergies. I guess it forces me to be somewhat creative and think of other ideas (which your site helps with!) Almost anything I would send is better than what the school would provide, unfortunately!
Wow, I never even thought about that! I hope it wasn’t an issue.
Ditto here; all peanuts and tree nuts in any way, shape, or form are verboten in Toronto’s public schools AND community centres. It makes lunches much more complicated to prepare. So yes, you are fortunate to still have PB as an option for packing school lunch!
Would sunbutter be acceptable? So delicious.
Yah, sunflower seed butter is permitted. Sadly, the daughter doesn’t like it. Oh well, it forces me to get creative!
I honestly inspire to be a mom like you someday! I’m not even pregnant (and nowhere near it for another few years) and I’m already thinking about how I can plan healthy meals for my invisible children. You make my dreams of that happening so imaginable
This post is amazing on so many levels. And what celebrities were sighted??
It’ll be in the next post. Stay tuned…
Pea Daddy is a good husband. Good job on that life decision!
Amen!
Aw Pea Daddy did good
Love the heart shaped sandwich, haha. No way my hubby would do that in fact I’m sure he’ll make fun of me when I do that for my little girl.
I should probably know this, but why the spelt bread? I mean, why do you prefer that over other breads for your kids? Or is it just what they like?
They like it because it seems softer to us than whole wheat but it is also 100% whole grain.
Aw, he’s SUCH a good dad! I think he did pretty well.
Can’t wait to hear which dress you chose, hehe. Have fun!!
Your girls are so sweet, and Pea Daddy seems like he did a great job! I swear the second I leave my man is on the phone for pizza, he calls me the pizza nazi since I just don’t think it needs to be consumed…oh…daily.
Damn that lunchbox is dope.
What a good daddy/husband!
Ah, I work at Blossom in Chelsea (I’ve also worked at the Uptown location). I’m curious to know which location you went to and what you had, but I’m glad to hear you had such a wonderful experience. You’re definitely inspiring me for when I have kids to keep them eating whole, plant based foods.
We went to the Chelsea location. It was INCREDIBLE! I’m going to post all about it in my next post. So excited that you work there and read my blog!!!
That’s so wonderful – I’m only sorry I wasn’t working while you were there, but I’m sure you were well taken care of by the other amazing, dedicated people who work at Blossom. Perhaps you’ll make another trip back to NYC sometime soon. Can’t wait for the cookbook – all the best!
Thanks, Beth! I made the ravioli tonight. Recipe coming tomorrow…I think it’s pretty close!
Aw, I bet you are so excited to get pack to your peas
Can’t wait to hear about the expo and the celebrities you ran into!
He did pretty well – yeah Pea Daddy!
Nice job Pea Daddy! I always cringe at what my husband feeds our son. Fruits and vegetables are always lacking…unless of course you count strawberry pop tarts or blueberry yogurt as ‘fruit’. I was looking through your recipeas and didn’t see one for bagels. So…I thought I would ask. We really like this recipe for bread machine bagels and I was wondering if you knew how to make it healthy. Here’s the link to the recipe…
http://tastykitchen.com/recipes/breads/bread-machine-bagels/
I will try! I’ve been ending to make homemade bagels! Thanks for the suggestion.
Compared to my dad, Pea Daddy’s sandwiches are miraculous. Somehow all my sandwiches were burned when made by him (I didn’t even want them on toast!) and there was horseradish in every dinner. My mom was no gourmet chef like you, but it was edible. I think if we have kids Chris will do great. He already feeds both dogs and cats all without my help. In fact he leaves ME directions when he leaves on a trip. I always relate to the confused husband.
I am completely impressed with Pea Daddy. That is about 10xs better than most I know could produce. Not sure my own dad would even try that much.
You know what Pea Daddy did . . . he attempted to become the favorite parent
Especially with Lulu who definitely got her cheese fix! Pizza cant compete with greens, at least not in a kids heart.
You’re lucky to have such a hands-on hubby.
Oh, he already was the favorite parent
Wow, so impressive!! He even took the photos from angles and got really close for detail haha
Way to go Pea Daddy!!
I think he’s trying to take over my job…
I’m sitting here telling my husband all that Pea Daddy did for your blog. We’re both super impressed. =)
Hope you’re having a blast in NYC!
Love the kids lunches (and that lunch box?? Perfection).
Andddd… also wouldn’t eat those carrots
I’m glad we can all agree on that one.
Allright! Go Pea Daddy!
That’s a great daddy that would photograph all of that stuff! Found your blog via Choosing Raw and I am chuckling over your wit and drooling over your photos!
Glad you found me! Welcome!
I have to admit that those pizzas look great
I think Pea Daddy is doing a good job with all that food and photographs.
PS : Please help me choose from the cooking books listed on The Veggie Eco-Life!
haha, not sure if A&W is one of Pea Daddy’s preferred brands of root beer, but this Father’s Day idea reminded me of him!

I can’t say I blame your husband, that pizza is one of the best things ever! Oh how I miss it (i used to work at cpk in high school but haven’t been back in ages.)
I don’t like to go there when I’m home, because it’s not the most vegan-friendly place around…so I think he just takes advantage of that!
I have to say, Pea Daddy is the man
Mama Pea, you are hilarious!
)
I could not stop laughing through out this post. (I know I’m a bit behind…still trying to catch up from being out of the country
“But at least we know that everyone in the house will be regular when I get home” <–Almost fell out of my chair from laughing at that one!
I love all of the little notes you left…you are quite an amazing Mom!
Thanks, Holly. Welcome home!!!
