Monkey on My Back
Just when I thought I was over him.
I’d shoved all the old photographs and letters in a box in the garage, wedged between the Christmas wrap and the Halloween decorations.
I made his favorite dessert for Easter.
I stopped changing the radio when our song came on. “Hollaback Girl.” I know. It’s bananas.
B-A-N-A-N-A-S.
I stopped thinking it was him, when in a crowded mall or restaurant, I got a whiff of polyester monkey.
But then yesterday, just as quickly as he left, he was back.
Shocking, I know.
(You may remember Malibu from this post.)
But the Malibu that showed up yesterday was not the Malibu I loved.
His paws are tainted, his hair matted from stolen hugs and kisses, dozens of kindergartener’s booger-covered hands having run through his once silky, clean fur. He brazenly wore his leopard-print ascot as a sign of his conquests. Clearly, the fact that we were “his first” meant nothing to him.
I’m going to burn that throw pillow now. And not just because it’s ugly.
To add insult to injury, he came with a notebook full of love notes from other children and a little memento from his torrid affair with another mother.
A hand-sewn banana.
Malibu knows I can’t sew a stich–and so does Pea Daddy, since finding scaly glue on my thigh. What? I super-glued the seam of my favorite running shorts back on the other day. The glue should wear off in about three days and I can wear my shorts for another three years. Win-win.
We weren’t about to just let him back into our lives without any sense of shame for his promiscuous ways.
Not looking so studly now are you, Malibu?
But the lesson of having Malibu back wasn’t to see how many germs a stuffed monkey can accumulate after seven months of runny noses, uncovered coughs and trips to the potty. It was to see how much we’ve grown.
Namely, I no longer do Gigi’s homework for her.

Well, look at that!
I took this as a good opportunity for me to check up on what went on while I was getting my haircut last night.
In other words, to get clues to my birthday present.
Dress up…pizza.…nothing telling there. Although I do like the way she’s slipped in some proper English. “Forth hence we made dinner…”
Got in the car…now we’re getting somewhere.
“Drove to the store.”
Really, Gigi? That’s it? We’re going to have a serious talk about developing our narrative skills by adding details. As in ‘What store?’ And ‘What exactly did you buy?’ And ‘Did Pea Daddy use a Groupon?’
I overlooked any lack of substantive information to admire the fact that Sister can write better than pretty much anyone on Celebrity Apprentice. (Let’s aim a little higher, though, shall we?)
I didn’t see Malibu though. I asked Gigi where he was.
She said, “Playing with Bella.”
Shocking, I know.
We sent Malibu, his man scarf and his dirty banana packing.
You can’t teach an old monkey new tricks.
But you can bathe your dolls in Lysol.

He is a bad example! But Gigi’s writing is so great!
“Forth hence we made dinner…” Oh my gosh, that’s hilarious!
That monkey reminds me of my 3 yo’s blanket (aka nye nye). Sooo tattered but he has to always have it.
Love Gigi’s stories and your snooping skills….my 3 yo can not keep a secret. So if Gigi is the same she will give you a good hint LOL
I had to do a double take when i saw the first pic of Gigi’s hair…BEYOND GORGEOUS! I am in awe. I seriously thought it was a wig. Makes me miss my hair, i chopped it all off when i got back from Afghanistan a few weeks ago. Though not as short, but its shoulder length.
My hair is above my chin if it makes you feel any better
And thank you…her hair is gorgeous, it’s just really a handful to take care of!
You are having way too much fun. You and Maliboooo. Gigi is doing really well too with the writing!
Oh mama, you are so hilarious!
You just can’t trust anyone who wears a man scarf… You just can’t.
i want a monkey named malibu…but the real kind. please and thank you
This is classic
“‘What exactly did you buy?’ And ‘Did Pea Daddy use a Groupon?’”
Haha! I always ask Scott the same thing when he goes and buys things…was it on sale??!
Supergluing shorts. Love it. I *almost* superglued a really bad wound on my hands a week or so ago. I was so close to doing it b/c it would not heal due to all the handwashing, veggie chopping, etc and was tempted to just break out the glue, but didnt. You know when you dont want superglue on your hands, it stays on there for days.
And Happy early Bday!!!
I superglue my cuts all the time! That’s the main reason I keep superglue around.
Hilarious. Malibu sounds like a good loyal friend though. After seven months with other snotty kids, he came back to Gigi!
Gigi’s writing is pretty good! I have a sort of poster thing I made for my mom as a class project in first grade hanging in my mom’s basement, and the letters look exactly like Gigi’s do! And my spelling was….also creative. I think I spelled “please and thank you” like “pless and thayk yo”. It was a good try. Now it seems bizarre to us that we would spell words so ridiculously, but it makes sense — those are often how the words really sound. “Sprisd” may just look like an error to us, but it is really an example of Gigi’s listening skills — to her, that’s what “surprised” sounds like. I think it’s fascinating.
Sorry to get all analytical on you. Maybe I should become a teacher and not a lawyer?
No, you are absolutely right, and this is something we are working on…her just TRYING. She tends to be a perfectionist (I have no idea where she gets that from…) and so a lot of times she won’t want to practice writing because she reads so well and she knows that the words she’s writing don’t look like the words she’s reading. But I’m proud of her for just sticking with it. She just five…she has the rest of her life to “be perfect.” Thanks for noticing
As a teacher, I completely agree. In Kindergarten and first grade, it’s important for kids to try and feel successful. Spelling doesn’t really become a huge issue until the upper grades when students already have the basics down.
Malibu is dirty and scandalous! ha!
Gigi is awesome! She writes so well for being 5, it’s all about being a good parent, I always say this, but you and Pea Daddy are amazing ones! It’s the most important job and most rewarding job in the world!
Love you! Have a great Thursday! When is your birthday?!
My birthday is Monday–the 2nd. I’m not telling how old I’m going to be, though.
Look at Gigi’s hair! It is beautiful
How I wish mine was that thick and glossy. There is lots to be said for the vegan lifestyle
Nett x
I can’t stop laughing. I love how you turn an innocent monkey into a scandalous jungle animal!
Haha this is great! You crack me up, especially with shaming Malibu by wearing that pink tutu!
SO cute!!! Sometimes I get really excited to have kids one day so that I can read their homework… I hope their spelling is as fabulous as Gigi’s!
We have a similar stinky monkey in our house. =)
Hahaha I looked at the old post and the before and afters of Malibu are hilarious. He does look like he’s had some rough nights…
Oh my what beautiful hair– I hope she loves it, because I’m really jealous
Super post, as always–I find Malibu kind of cute, even with his dirty banana….
This cracked me up! I agree that a stuffed monkey traveling from house to house sounds like a germy nightmare. Perhaps Malibu can take a dip in the whirlpool (washer)?! With his man scarf, of course.
He wasn’t here long enough. He can get his banana sewing girlfriend to wash him
Gigi has such gorgeous hair. Yes I am jealous of your 5 year old’s daughter’s hair. And her handwriting may be the cutest thing I have seen all day.
Thanks for the hilarious start to my morning. Loved the “memento from a torrid affair with another mother”. I can’t wait for Lulu to get a visit or two from ol’ Malibu. But, nevermind–that makes me sad because it’ll mean Lulu and Pryce are in school.
Hmmm. Now I’m really not looking forward to my son starting school! Too funny. I can’t believe someone actually handstitched a banana.
Some moms have more time on their hands than others
“MALABOO”, gotta love Gigi, and that hair! gorgeous!
love that shocking photo of Geeg (just want a shorter name for Gigi)
I call her Geeg all the time!
Honestly…that is kind of disgusting…or maybe I am just a germ-a-phobe.
You can even make a stuffed monkey a great post. You amaze me!!!
Thanks, Ang. Wednesdays are ballet, as you know, so there’s not a lot of cooking going on
I also have a kindergartner and I’m amazed at everything she has learned this year, my sweet little girl who could write her name in September is now writing stories and starting to read! Thank heavens for amazing teachers!!!!
Agreed! Gigi’s teachers are the best!
This had to be one of my favorite posts in a really long time. Not that I don’t love all your posts, but as a teacher this just made me smile to see what goes on at home when things get sent home. Gigi is an incredible writer for being in KINDERGARTEN. However, I do concur that she could have added something about Pea Daddy and the groupon. Come on kid.
Thanks Chelsey! Gigi said the other day that her teacher reads the blog sometimes, so I hope she gets a kick out of it too.
cheeky monkey!
my guess for your bday present… tommy bahama sun dress… ooooooooh awwwwwww beautiful!
That was my birthday gift two years ago. I’m not joking.
Just wanted to let you know I used the new reci”peas” section today and it is truly awesome. They did a great job – so user friendly.
I agree…thanks!
Love it! You are just so creative and an all-around awesome writer! Gigi must get it from her mama.
I teach kindergarten in the inner city here in Philly and it’s so funny to see no matter where kids are their stories and writing progress so similarly. “I ate —– I went—— I played ——–I love—– ” haha too cute
We had Teddy the bear and I cringed every time he came home. In first grade this year, they got much smarter and the kids sent paper “Flat Stanleys” to all their faraway relatives, who sent them back with pictures and stories. Much better.
HOW CUTE IS GIGI!?!?! Omg what a sweetie. I love these little stories…..you always know how to get a laugh out of me..
Love the super glue! Cute post and Gigi’s writing is great!
Thank God for the link to the other post, because I was a tad confused (although I used to teach elementary… I should know this stuff).
I have to say I’m opposed to the monkey passing. Kids not only have germs, but they have lice (did I mention I was an elementary teacher). Sorry, sorry, I know I shouldn’t mention. It really is a cute idea in theory and it’s something the kids will remember forever.
Yeah, I was thinking a few people would be confused…
Oh my gosh Mama Pea you make me laugh nearly everyday! Thank you so much for all the laughs!
You are welcome…thanks for reading!!!
I love seeing Gigi’s writing!! And that is one nasty monkey.
