Still in Flight

I am a mighty traveler.

IMG_2671-2

Well, actually I am a very tired, very reflective traveler.  Twelve hours spent getting to a plane, getting on a plane or getting away from a plane will do that to you.  And right now, I’d like to get far, far away from a plane.  At least for 36 hours.

I’m in Tampa at the invitation of my book publisher to speak at their annual sales conference.  Executives, editors and salesmen and women spend several days attending “executive, editor and salesmen and women meetings” and then celebrate making it through those meetings at a banquet dinner.  They don’t hire a band or a hypnotist to entertain them, they ask one of their upcoming authors to speak.

Guess who?

It’s a good opportunity for me to get the people who will be working with book retailers jazzed about my book.  It could be the difference between the Bargain Bin at the back of the store and a cardboard cutout of me at the front of store display.  Okay, maybe nobody wants that (except Pea Daddy for nights like tonight).

I’m not really nervous yet, I just hope to leave the room smiling, as in making sure the roomful of people feels good, not me physically walking out of the room grinning like an idiot, although that would be nice too.  Speaking of idiots, there’s a portion of my speech where I have written it in to sing a few lines of song lyrics.  Pea Daddy and I have a bet going on whether or not I’ll actually do it.  Mi mi mi mi mi!

I haven’t travelled a lot, so I tend to overpack.

I overpack pets.

IMG_2664

She didn’t actually come, but she did crawl up on my lap for the first time in five years last night.  And now I mutually fear that hell has frozen over and that I might die.

I overpack food.

IMG_2650

My two favorite things I brought are the Just Veggies snacks, which are like the gateway drug and then the Bombay Curry Kale chips which are my full blown addiction.  I also have a bag of each in my suitcase for the ride home.  Because nothing gets you through an eight hour plane ride like dehydrated vegetables.

I overpack entertainment.

IMG_2656

A wide range of fluffy magazines, My Sister’s Keeper and Eat, Pray, Love.  I am a speed reader, yet still haven’t made it past “Italy” in Eat, Pray, Love.  I was eating, I was praying, but I wasn’t loving.  I was even wondering why I bought it.  I guess the cardboard cutout sucked me in.

I was hoping not to need any of the entertainment. Believe it or not, I was hoping for a talkative seatmate.  I am that person that tries to make best friends with the checkout clerk, the gas station attendant and the airplane seatmate.  But I’m no creep, forcefully breathing dehydrated vegetables in your face and showing you pictures of her kids.  If you don’t reciprocate, I leave you alone.  Unfortunately, the older man sitting next to me was hearing-impaired and thus didn’t hear my witty story about the time I left my purse in the back or an airplane seat.  Nor did he hear my request to get up to go to the bathroom the four times I yelled it.  The teenage kid across the aisle had to smack him and say, “She’s got to go!!!!”  Bless him.

With a relieved bladder and an open mind, I picked up Eat, Pray, Love.  I ate (dehydrated vegetables).  I prayed (because of the blizzard-like conditions in Denver).  And I loved.

When Elizabeth Gilbert wrote about needing to clear out space in her mind to let God in, when she wrote about needing to control each moment, even the spiritual moments, when she wrote about her inability to get through meditation, to get through lunch without a single moment of truly being still, I “Mmm-hmmmed!” so loudly the guy in the seat next to me heard.  And instinctively got up to let me go to the bathroom.

It’s easy to be reflective, spiritually honest and perfectly still when you are 20,000 feet in the air, staring out the window at snow-capped mountain peaks.

IMG_2674

I vowed to be grateful for the time I had to myself these next couple days, to enjoy the opportunity and to try my very best to be still.

Has hell frozen over?

IMG_2675

No, that was just Denver.

My renewed spirit won’t let me be upset that I arrived in Tampa two hours late, that’ it’s now 1 a.m.

IMG_2677

I’m going to be still.

At least until my Pilates class at 9.

  1. You’re the best writer! I’m so glad you made it safely there and it was fun to read about your tale. Good luck! I hope you sing!!!!

  2. Whit says:

Keep on trucking through “Eat, Pray, Love” I was not a fan of Italy either, then I got to India and really liked, and then she arrived in Bali I loved and she loved! Good luck at the conference! I just love reading your blog.

    • MamaPea says:

Thanks, Whit. I am so glad I didn’t quit after Italy!

      • Stephanie says:

Now I was the opposite…I loved Italy the best! But then again I have an unnatural obsession with all things food ( cooking, grocery shopping, and of course eating!). While i was reading that book, I kept telling my husband he needed to take me to Naples so I could get the pizza she kept raving about!
I loved the whole book, though. Enjoy it! And safe travels!

  3. I loved “Eat Pray Love”. My friend bought it for me years ago and I finally read it a few months ago. I hope everything goes well at your conference. I’d rather do ANYTHING than speak in front of a large (or small) group of people.

  4. Jennie says:

Dude! You have the Larabar hookup or something! I don’t think I’ve ever seen those colors of wrappers. Whole Foods?? Wracking my brain here…not sure if I’ve ever truly checked out the Larabar selection at WF. I usually hit Fred Meyer, Target, TJ’s…but they all have the same 4ish flavors – Apple Pie, Cherry Pie, Cashew Cookie…

I’d be scared to book you as a dinner entertainer – laughing and eating never combine well. I always seem to be the person who takes a bite as soon as someone says something funny and I blow it all over the place…usually to my husband’s utter amusement. If you can speak as well as you write, you’re destined way above the Walgreens bin! :) Have a great time! :)

    • MamaPea says:

Ha ha, thanks Jennie. The Larabar flavors are Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (fave), Tropical Fruit Tart (2nd fave) and Blueberry Muffin (3rd fave) and they are from Whole Foods!

    • Rebekah says:

Not sure where you’re located, but I nearly peed myself when I walked down the Larabar aisle at my local co-op (PCC- Puget Consumer Co-op I think). They had about 30 different kinds. I hope you can find something similar in your area!

  5. Elin says:

I think the book Eat, pray, love was so much better than the movie. Loved the India part!
Good luck with your speech – if judging by how well and funny you write on this blog, everybody will leave the room smiling! I really hope you sing!!

  6. Stephanie says:

I saw your tweet earlier today and I loved the India part of EPL the most as well.
Well, thus far. I haven’t finished it yet but I should be finishing it this week.
    Good luck with your speech!

  7. Such an exciting time for you! Good luck with your speech–we are pulling for you and wishing you well. If you speak half as well as you write, you will be juuuuuust fine.

  8. Nikki says:

Mama Pea – I just LOVE your blog! I love your sense of humor and the way you lovingly speak abut all the peas. I too am a stay at home mom (I was formerly a teacher) and I am the Vegan one while my husband and my two daughters are becoming vegetarian. Thanks for all your recipes and inspirations! Good luck with your conference!

  9. I sent my mama back to Denver today. I sent her home with two local pomegranates, a tub of PBCCCDB’s and our pet Chihuahua.
Hope you have fun on your trip!
    I miss you already!!!
    Xo,
    Erin
P.S. My mama loves your balls almost as much as I do. Big, big hugs for that.

  10. Brittany says:

I love My Sister’s Keeper – it was the first book I read of Picoult’s and I’ve read them all now. Eat, Pray, Love didn’t do too much to me either. Good luck and have fun on your trip!

And I have yet to go to Whole Foods in tigard when they have Cookie Dough Larabars in stock.

  11. “It could be the difference between the Bargain Bin and a cardboard cutout of me . “– NO PRESSURE, at all :) Holy crap, hang in there!

I havent read EPLove or My Sister’s Keeper. I need to. Everyone tells me that they think I would relate to/enjoy EPL. I know so very little about it, I have no idea if I would or not, but I need to get on board with it.

I love all your snack foods and your magazines. Magazines are my speed. My attention span sometimes necessitates a magazine article, not a 300 page book!

Break a leg, good luck, knock em dead, I am wishing you the best. I can only imagine the internal pressure you’re feeling!!!

  12. Good luck! I hope you blow them away. Don’t sing, just be you! They will love you. And then I will steal that cutout for my house!

  13. karen says:

I live in the Tampa area and today’s weather is going to be beautiful! The warmest day we have had in a long time (weird, because it’s so not in most parts of the country). Hope you enjoy your time here and knock it out of the park at the conference!

  14. That is so exciting!! Enjoy every minute of your speech, talking to a big group of people is one of the scariest things to do, but also one of the most exciting. Have fun with it, and sing if ya feel like it! They are going to LOVE you and your ideas.

Slash I am such an over-packer! I really should cut down on it, but our family motto is “never not prepared” (it sounds less stupid when it’s in Latin and on the family crest), so I guess it’s genetic?

  15. Lauren says:

Wishing you safe and happy travels!!! I can’t wait to hear all about your speech. You’ll do great! :)

  16. Travelling can be such a disaster sometimes! I also over-pack snacks! It is so much better than not being prepared and becoming a hungry cranky traveler:-)

  17. I’m sure you’re speech would be wonderful, and I’d be so happy to have you as a seatmate on a plane…I always get the super creepy or the obnoxiously overbearing.

  18. Good luck on your speech!! You’ll do great.

I think I pack an entire suitcase full of food when I go on vacation. It’s just how I roll. or I am OCD and freak out thinking I won’t find anything I’ll be able to eat.

  19. Sarah says:

I loved My Sister’s Keeper (soooo much better than the movie-of course!). I have yet to try Eat, Pray, Love. I keep hearing mixed reviews of it. Maybe on my own upcoming flight?
Anyway, I hope the rest of your trip is fun and refreshing!

  20. Maggie says:

You should definitely sing the one part of your speech! I work in sales for a book publisher and these meetings can be long and tedious so anything that changes it up a little is great. I’m sure you’ll be wonderful, good luck!

  21. Glad you had a safe trip! I have to say that I had a really hard time reading EPL…though the pizza scene in the movie is probably one of the best movie moments ever. Just not my kind of book. Enjoy being in the warmth in Tampa- I’m super jealous of that!

  22. Katie says:

Traveling can be such a pain sometimes ; p glad you made it safe and hope you got sleep too! I wish you so much luck, I know you will do great speaking and you know your book is going to be a hit ; )

Pea Kitty I think was being nice because of you leaving, thought maybe you were never coming back, lol!!

Have fun today in Tampa! I hope Pea Daddy holds the house down well while your gone ; ) I know he will!

  23. Have a great time in Tampa! I wish I could hear your speech!

  24. you’re in my neck of the woods now! hope you enjoy your time here :)

  25. Mama pea, enjoy this well-deserved change of pace and chance to breathe!

  26. Anna says:

I love the old man story, gave me quite a few chuckles this early morning. =)
Glad you made it there safely! Let me know when you’re coming to TN! ;) (No really, please do. And if you weren’t already planning to come, please start planning.) =)

  27. Anna says:

Oh, and I love your outfit! Very chic, obviously that In Style magazine works…or otherwise you’re naturally fashionable and that magazine is useless. =)

  28. Amanda says:

Have you ever read 19 Minutes by Jodi?

OmmmmmmGOSH! Amazing! Have great travels!! :)

  29. ah yes, denver…full of snow and ice! i’m surprised you guys were able to land…i was sliding all over the roads yesterday!

  30. Ha, Italy was the only part I DID like!! I loved reading about all of the food…and then I got to the prayer and meditation and stillness, and I was like, “Yeah, yeah, yeah…” Maybe that says something about me and areas of my life that I should work on?

    Nahhhh. :-)

  31. Mary Beth says:

Still wishing I would have made the drive up to see you! I hope you at least got to enjoy a glimmer of sun and some nice temps while you were here!
Eat, Pray, Love…why didn’t I make it past Italy either?! Couldn’t get in to it…if you haven’t seen the movie yet…um…nevermind. ;) I love Jodi P…I could NOT get through that movie, but for emotional reasons as opposed to ‘annoyances’ I had w/ E.P.L! Sorry Julia Roberts :(
You look great in purple! :)

  32. Good luck on your speaking engagement!

  33. Good luck, that’s so exciting!

  34. bitt says:

My sister’s keeper is a great plane read. Probably more engaging than EPL. I am a big Picoult fan, and this one was the gateway drug.

Enjoy your trip! Hope you get some much needed sun.

  35. Katie says:

MP, if you enjoy My Sister’s Keeper, I’d recommend books by Kristin Hannah as well. Enjoy the sunny weather in Florida!

  36. Good luck with your talk! I love Jodi Picoult :)

  37. brandi says:

So exciting! Have a great time :)

I loved the Pray and Love sections SO much better than Eat.

  38. I couldn’t finish Eat Pray Love. Blech. My Sister’s Keeper, though. AMAZING!!!! I’m still pissed at the movie version for ruining the ending of the book.

I can just picture the old man and the teenager on the flight. You have such a way with words that creates vivid images. Your audience is going to LOVE your speech!

  39. That last picture is so beautfiul!! I loved Eat Pray Love. And actually adored the Eat part. I remember ordering a fancy pizza after reading about her eating some in Naples and basically thinking it was the greatest thing ever. lol

  40. Liz says:

The India part was my favorite part of the book as well – her discussions about finding God and faith were the parts that spoke to me most.

  41. My Sister’s Keeper is one of my two all time favorite books. If you’re a crier beware of reading in public. ;)

  42. Lauren says:

I loved Eat, Pray, Love but it took me a while to read it. I felt the need to “digest” everything after I read it.

Looking forward to the cookbook! It’ll be here before you know it! Good luck in the meeting!

  43. I’ve never heard of either of those two dehydrated veggie snacks, and while I was able to immediately order the “Just Veggies” one, the Kale Chips are sold out! At least I know to keep my eye out for them now. Thanks! :)

  44. Hi! I still haven’t read Eat, Pray, Love, but everyone’s been raving about it so I guess I… should? Well, after I finish my ton of books from the library; I have a feeling the library won’t be happy to see so many books checked out to one person :-D

I like Jodi Picoult’s My Sister Keeper, but I think the book from her that really got me was Nineteen Minutes. She manages to incorporate a surprise ending that changes everything; brilliant work.

    Have a safe trip! =)

  45. Kelly says:

Be safe Mama Pea! I know you’ll wow the socks off those executives! Hugs!

  46. Maryz says:

    I love those boots!

I made it through Eat, Pray, Love but it was a struggle at some parts of the book. My Sister’s Keeper is a tear jerker as are all Jodi Picoult’s books. But for some reason I can never put the books down!

Good luck! I’m sure you will be awesome! Can’t wait for the cookbook to be out!

  47. i really liked eat, pray, love, but it wasn’t a book that i sped through like i usually do. it took me a while to take it all in. i’m glad you made it safely to tampa! i hope all goes well with your trip.

  48. Ang says:

Thinking of you today!!! Glad you made it safe:)

  49. Camille says:

What an honor! Congrats on your trip and have fun!

  50. I saw Family Circle hiding on the edge of your magazine pile…I have to confess that I get that magazine too! My friend gave it to me as a joke to take on the plane ride en route to our honeymoon. I read it cover to cover and a subscription was so cheep I couldn’t resist. It truly is a guilty pleasure because it is totally aimed at moms of middle schoolers, it is just that the tips are so dang useful. I have to hide it behind my Vanity Fair to maintain my street cred., but it is worth it. This doesn’t mean that I will drive a minivan.

  51. EPL is blahhh…i got halfway through the first part and stopped. meh! Read Picoult’s book, sooooooooooooooo much better!

  52. Rachel says:

Hope you were able to be still and enjoy the quiet of no kids and husband :)
How do you use the “Amazing Meal” that you packed?

    • MamaPea says:

I’m about to try it for lunch. You just mix it in a water bottle with non-dairy milk or water, or find somewhere to buy a smoothie and ask them to throw it in. I’m going to try the water bottle method. Wish me luck!

  53. Ashley says:

I can’t believe the one day you’re flying through we have crazy ice! Our weather has been so mild this year…but glad you made it!! The photo of you is adorable…love your hair at that slightly shorter length! Good luck!!! xoxo

  54. Nikki T says:

Good Luck with your speech! I hope you sing!
I haven’t read EPL yet…it’s on my shelf in the the ‘to read’ pile, but My Sister’s Keeper is a wonderful read.

  55. Chanile says:

As everyone else said “Good luck” and I know you will be great. I would love to hear you sing! Also, I know your book won’t be in the bargain bin, but even if for some totally not gonna happen reason it was…I would search for it and buy it. It’ll be green right? :)

  56. Hope your speech goes well! I love My Sister’s Keeper (not so keen on the film though), have never read Eat, Pray, Love though.

  57. Tina says:

Good luck! I am sure they will love you!

  58. Amber K says:

I couldn’t make it through Eat, Pray, Love. I don’t even think I got to the first country she visits I was so bored. That’s what I get from steering away from my usual fast-paced psychological thrillers. Probably means I NEED to read more books like EPL!

  59. trailmomma says:

Safe travels! I loved Eat Pray Love when she was in Italy but my reading slowed when she left. Not sure why. My Sister’s Keeper however, I inhaled that within days. Maybe not the book to “finish” on the plane unless you really have bonded with your seat mate! :-)

Traveling in a few weeks with my 2.5 year old (I’m also 6 months pregnant) across the country so thanks for the snack ideas. She may not go for for the dehydrated vegetables but I sure will!

  60. You should definitely sing! Best of luck on your presentation!! :D

I haven’t read EPL either. Its one of a zillion books on my “I’ll read when I’m done with massage therapy school and have free time again” list.

  61. Genevieve says:

It’s absolutely irrelevant, but man, your hair always looks so great! ;-P

  62. Stephanie says:

My sister’s keeper…make sure you have some tissue!

Maybe Pea Kitty has been reading the blog?

  63. Heather says:

Good luck on your presentation … I’m sure you will dazzle them! Day 1 of the pealightful meal plan complete…I had a different lunch but same dinner – the tofu was delish done that way!

  64. Andrea says:

I’m in a study lounge and I just burst out laughing when I read: “But I’m no creep, forcefully breathing dehydrated vegetables in your face and showing you pictures of her kids”! Thank you, I needed a laugh on this dreary day! :)

  65. I would so love to hear you speak, you crack me up girl.

Have a blast with your You Time!

  66. Jill says:

I just saw that Oprah’s show today is focused on vegan eating and I thought of you right away.
Today… speaking engagement for the book publisher….
Next thing you know, you could be on Oprah!

    • Chanile says:

Thanks for that info, I just watched it. It was a lot to take in. I am going back to being a vegetarian, with the intent to become vegan. Seeing the slaughter house was just crazy…just crazy!

  67. salah says:

Love your outfit!!! I wish I looked that cute when I flew places lol

  68. Eat,Pray,Love..I love Julia Roberts but I didn’t love the movie or the book. I just didn’t feel drawn into it. There are a few good lines but I didn’t understand the hype… My Sister’s Keeper made me cry though and the book is definitely better than the movie!

  69. Jessica says:

I hear ya with regards to Eat, Pray, Love. I loved Eat, I hated Pray, I liked Love! Lol

  70. hahahaha I cracked up the entire time while reading this. I get a lot of the really old ladies when I most need them. I used to get motion sickness on airplanes all the time when I was little, and the old ladies would help me through that or there was one that played “go fish” and “old maid” with me for 5 hours on a plane to hawaii. God bless that one.

  71. Allison says:

i love flying:) And i love Tampa airport! Its nice, clean, and has palm trees and free wifi and an amazing mall across the street:) I would alway fly in there when i was visiting my boyfriend so maybe im a little biased from all the good memories:)

I hope you have an awesome conference and you will most definitely not be in the bargain bin (though this poor college student wouldnt mind getting a nice discount…)

  72. Kaleigh says:

:) Best wishes on your speech. With your sense of humor, there’s no way they could not love you!

  73. Lauren says:

HA HA I love that Denver joke. Especially since it’s a high of -2 here today…

  74. Monica says:

I so know that feeling you are describing about being isolated in the air with only your thoughts and travel entertainment, which is ironic because people are invading your personal space like it is their job.

I love flying for the sheer fact that I HAVE to turn off the Blackberry and disconnect from the world.

  75. Soo says:

You are just the cutest, Mama Pea. :) What a fun way to get out of the cold! Although, I could use a little snow myself–even though my husband and I are now Floridians….but true northerners at heart.

Hope you had a great time!

  76. Christie says:

Alright, now you all have me feeling guilty for leaving poor Elizabeth in Bali. Maybe I’ll have to try again…
That being said, you have my ideal body type – thin and tall looking! I don’t know that I can achieve it (my wrist bones appear bigger than your thigh) – my Dad once called me “sturdy” and that was when I was thin. He clarified it to mean “not delicate” looking. Thanks Dad! I did have a question here, and it was, have you always been thin or did vegan help? I’ve been vegan for ONE WHOLE WEEK!

    • MamaPea says:

Congrats on being vegan for a week! I am “tall looking” because I am actually quite tall: 5’11″ I’ve always been tall though. I haven’t lost weight since becoming a vegan.

And Elizabeth is still stuck in India for me…

  77. Kristin says:

I have always considered myself a sane, rational person. Yet I find myself fighting these urges to move to Oregon and start a campaign to become your BPFF. Creepy? I know!

p.s. Please don’t be alarmed. I really am sane (if not completely rational) and will not be stalking you any time soon. :p

  78. Maura says:

You’re gonna bawl your face off after reading My Sister’s Keeper, especially knowing you have two daughters. Hope you haven’t seen the movie yet – the book, in all its original form – is so much better.

  79. I just looked up the weather in Colorado and it’s crazy! It was warm when I went in December…

  80. Good Luck, you will knock their socks off!

  81. Wow, how exciting! I always over pack too, especially food since going vegan. Wonderful post, glad you made it safely and can’t wait to hear more.

  82. Lee says:

I had to force myself to get past the Eat part. I liked Eating. Praying and loving, not so much. Oh well.

  83. So exciting! Good luck MP. We’ll all have our fingers crossed for you.

  84. Sana says:

Break a finger? What part of the body does one wish to break for a pre-speech luck?

  85. How exciting! Knock ‘em dead, I know you will do a fantastic job!

  86. CathyK says:

i flew in and out of tampa airport this summer – a lovely spot!
did you catch oprah today? oprah + 378 staffers go vegan for a week. all i could think of was your week’s meal plan that you provided a couple days ago – no reason not to try the seven day challenge – easy PEASy thanks to you!!
this post was so funny…you always are funny but this really tickled my funny bone today. thanks. :)

  87. Hayley says:

I’m so excited for you, and though this may come late I wish you the best of luck and can’t wait to hear all about it!!!

  88. My Sister’s Keeper is such a good book. I’m curious if you saw the episode of Oprah today where she and her staffers went vegan for a week? I had a lot to say about in on my blog but am curious what your opinion was if you saw it.

    • MamaPea says:

I have so much to say about it. But mostly that I am so proud of Oprah for even having it as a topic. So many more people will be considering veganism after today and though I don’t feel the coverage was “perfect,” I’m so grateful that she even went down that road.

  89. Gosh you look cute when you fly. I’m the chick in yoga pants and a hoodie ;)

  90. J.Lynn says:

Firstly, you are one stylish traveller! Secondly, I wanna travel with you, with all those yummy goodies and plethora of entertainment :)

  91. Sarah Lynn says:

“It’s easy to be reflective, spiritually honest and perfectly still when you are 20,000 feet in the air, staring out the window at snow-capped mountain peaks.”

This is so beautiful, and so true. I recently flew on one of those large silver birds for the first time in years. I prayed throughout the flight and felt cleansed in a spiritual sense upon exiting the aircraft. How timely to read this. Thanks for this awesome post. I took so many pictures from my phone while I was up there. It’s a wonderful reminder of how small we really are.

    Take care.

  92. Rebekah says:

You have gotten me hooked on those kale chips! It is painful to shell out $5.99 for them at Whole Foods but so worth it at the same time. I often have the best intentions of making kale chips, but then I don’t. Have you tried the nacho flavor?

By the way, have you ever tried making kale chips in a food dehydrator? I’ve found this is a super easy way to get them crispy without any burnt edges.
