Guessing Game

I’ve always been a hands-on mom.  The girls have only ever had three babysitters in their whole lives and one of those gave birth to me.  When the girls were babies, I would constantly be down on the floor playing with them even before they could really play anything other than “let’s see how long this clean outfit lasts before I puke, pee or poop all over it.”  The answer is always “less than five minutes.”  I wore holes in my jeans I was on my knees so much.  It got to a point where the babysitter who gave birth to me said, “Sarah, the girls have got to learn to entertain themselves a little bit.”

Man, have they ever learned.

It’s beautiful, because on days where I am being pulled in a million different directions, making five different lists of things to pack instead of actually packing, opening a bag of tortilla chips and calling it “dinner” for our friends coming over, and starting to lay out clothes for the girls for each day I will be gone and each of their activities in between (if Teacher Annie catches Gigi in anything but a pink leotard there will be hell to pay!), I don’t just park the girls in front of the TV.  Instead, they really do entertain themselves.

Most of the time I can figure out what they are playing.  A jump rope tied to a comb with a hand on the hip means Gigi is playing Beyoncé again.  It’s even easier to tell when she puts on the single sparkly glove and flips her hand back and forth like she did yesterday.  If Lulu is hiding behind the couch cushion, that means she is in her “flying car.”  Or else she is hiding so she can go Number Two in privacy.

Sometimes it’s not so obvious, though.  Like the scene I discovered this morning.

Clue #1:

IMG_2550

Dining room chairs lined in a row.

No idea.

Clue #2:

IMG_2551

A rock in a basket.

This started to tip things off for me, because it’s not really a rock.  We have had this baby for almost a year.  Who holds on to a rock for a year?!  We do.  Especially when I found this rock on the beach in Kona when Lulu was having a fit because she didn’t want to leave after playing in the ocean all day.  I called it a turtle egg.  It is a treasure.  Did you catch the part about it being egg?

Clue #3:

IMG_2553

Horses…or livestock, if you will.

Being fed apples,

and mixed nuts.

IMG_2571

Clue #4:

Gigi placing a penguin on the egg?

IMG_2562

This penguin was borrowed from Noah’s Ark.  I’ll have you know the female penguin was left on board, so that $3.99 we spent to rent March of the Penguins paid off.

Clue #5:

Lulu’s choice of accessories.

IMG_2575-2

Yeehaw.

You guessed it, they were playing “farm.”  Maybe a penguin farm during Mardi Gras, but a farm nonetheless.

IMG_2573-2

I was pretty excited when “Ma” started sweeping the floor.

IMG_2578-2

Gigi asked Lulu what her favorite part of playing farm was.  Lulu said, “Feeding the animals.”  She has a thing for nuts, I guess.

Gigi said, “You know my favorite part?”

IMG_2580-2

“Spending time with you.”

I need to go play “farm” now.

  1. Camille says:

    Awwww!
They remind me so much of my sister and I when we were little. They make me smile every time :)

  2. Eyes closed and full of love. :) SO sweet.

  3. Nicole says:

That is absolutely the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen. Your daughters are delightful :)

  4. They look sooo cute together and play so well together! My sister is nearly 4 yrs younger than I am and we ranged from being little bff’s and playing great together to being….at each other like cats and dogs!

Skylar has only had 1 babysitter other than Scott or I. I know what you mean about being hands on :)

And that nut container. “Digger’s Nuts”. That is so ripe with TWSS potential in so many ways I will not even go there. haha!

  5. Heather says:

Oh my goodness they are so cute together! My boys are 8 and almost 12 but they still quite often (between fighting fits) tell each other what a great brother the other one is and give hugs. It’s the best feeling seeing your kids like that. Have a great trip :)

  6. Awwwww so cute! Your daughters are beautiful!

  7. Oh that is just to sweet…my girls have really been into playing mommy and babies…they have there babies all dressed and diaper bags packed..they buckle them in the car when we leave..its just so cute! I love being a mom :) Best job ever!!! And you are doing an awesome job with your two beauties!

  8. lindsay says:

girls can be so sweet (most of the time), haha. I bet that made your day!

  9. Those pictures of the two of them are priceless!! Wish I still had the imagination of a kid.

  10. Adorable. M always entertains herself well too. She will literally tell me “no, mommy….SELF!” because she wants to play by herself.

  11. Tina says:

    Oh my goodness, how adorable!

  12. Your girls are so sweet and adorable. I love this. :D

  13. Hannah says:

Awwww! This warms my heart, and reminds me of the very first time my brother said “I’m glad to have a sister” when we were kids. My brother, 26 to my 23, is now one of my best friends, and I absolutely hope Gigi and Lulu can say the same as they grow up.

  14. LauraLee says:

Aww! Lulu and Gigi make me want to have kiddos too, and that’s saying something!

  15. That’s adorable! Love that the female penguin stayed on the Ark!

  16. Lauren says:

OMG, this reminds me so much of my childhood. My sister and I use to hang out in our flannel nightgowns and play all day. :) So adorable!

  17. Ana says:

    Aww, so sweet!!

  18. I just adore how close they are! My sister is 15 years older than me (yes, I was an accident) so we never had that close cuddly bonding time. Needless to say, I always bonded with my friends’ siblings growing up, much to the chagrin of my friends!

  19. Allison says:

    Awww such fun sister memories:):):)

  20. Awe!! I used to play games JUST like this with my sister when we were little. I’m blonde and my sister is a brunette, just like your little girls! This brings me back to the days:)

  21. adorable! what sweet little sisters :-)

  22. Kaci says:

    Awhhh how sweet!

  23. what sweeties! totally brings to mind all the games my sister and i would play together as kids!

  24. totally having flashbacks to the days of lining all of our stuffed animals and figurines up.. tehn going into battle with them. thats what i get for having a brother I guess!

  25. ahhh…my brothers and i kept ourselves entertained by wrestling on the hardwood floor in the living room, or playing baseball in the front yard, sprinkler heads as bases…which we broke quite a few.

oh the good ol’ days…i miss your girls :(

  26. Ang says:

Those weren’t just any bag of chips you opened for us. Dinner(and wine) was great! I didn’t have to cook! But I’m still craving Nachos! And Avery wants to move in with you! :) Thanks again

  27. Ahhh, how sweet. Just about everyday I “get to” play with diecast cars from the movie “Cars”. Pryce asks me continually, “Will you play with me?”, until I give in. It makes them feel so loved when we spend time in their world.

  28. MLT says:

Aw, gigi seems like she is just so naturally sweet natured. What a wonderful sister.

  29. So sweet. Love the “turtle egg”. I gotta remember that one. :)

  30. Dorry says:

Oh, this warms my heart! As the youngest of 3 girls, I can’t begin express the amazing blessing it is to have sisters. Your girls will best best friends forever! Through some ups & downs, perhaps, but that will just ake their friendship stronger.

  31. That was the cutest thing I have encountered today. They’re precious!

  32. Posts like this are not good for our whole “waiting to have kids” thing… must go read blogs with less cute kids.

  33. Jess says:

my sister and i were either like this or at each other’s throats. well she was at mine while i was idolizing her…

  34. every time I think about penguins I think about my little sister. She’s 10 years younger than I am and when she was 4 she came home from school and told us that she learned about “jackass” penguins . . . we were incredulous (and also DIED laughing at hearing a 4 year old say jackass) until we googled it and found out they’re a real species

  35. Awww this makes me want kids so badly. They’re adorable. But, when did Lulu start looking so old?!

  36. Amber K says:

They are so adorable! I never would have guessed that.

  37. Gabriela says:

Awww – your girls are just adorable!
It’s amazing how kids can surprise us :)
I wish my 5-year old sister Lelê had a younger sister – she has four older sisters and a 4-month old brother! So she always ends up playing with her cousin Pat.
She says I’m her favorite sister, though!
That definitely makes my day ;)

  38. Jena says:

Oh, my heart is a pile of mush on the floor. Your girls are so cute! Isn’t it amazing how creative they are? I have a 6yr old niece and some of the things she comes up with are pretty interesting!

  39. Aww, so adorable!! It is so amazing to see what kids can come up with using their imaginations!

  40. Too cute! I grew up on a small dairy farm and would have enjoyed the additions of some penguins!

I’ve been reading your blog for awhile now and am always inspired by your plant-based diet balanced with the rest of your life. I’m not vegan but definitely plan on buying your cookbook. Happy blogging!

  41. You are a better mom than me. I definitely let PBSkids babysit my two at times. The kids playing together while I am in the shower is a recipe for disaster in my home. They’ve made ‘soup’ in the bathroom sink with a whole bottle of lotion, they’ve drawn masks on their face with markers and they’ve made big bowls of ‘snacks,’ leaving remnants of nuts, granola and raisins all over the downstairs, all during my crazy fast shower. Thus, Curious George watches them so I can lather up in peace. :) I like to let them entertain themselves when I am nearby and can pick up on that mischievous silence that all moms know too well.

  42. Heather says:

Awwww! That is sooooo sweet! This makes me want to call my sister and tell her I love her!

I love how wild they’re imaginations are! I used to create the most amazing things in my head when I was little. Now, I have a hard time seeing anything form out of a big fluffy cloud! What’s wrong with me?

  43. aw so cute!!! i don’t think i would ever have thought to play farm, but is it weird that it sounds like fun to play now? ;)

  44. kate says:

They are too cute! I never played farm growing up, which is too bad since I definitely could of used the practice now that I live in Iowa. Yee haw!

  45. I hope one day I can have girls as sweet as yours and can be a fun mom like you!

  46. Emily says:

This was so cute, it really just made my day. I wish I could go back to the time in my life when creativity and imagination (along with my best friend Meaghan) could keep me entertained and happy for hours.

  47. Guh. They are just too (expletive) cute.

Though I’m kind of surprised that pet egg-rock didn’t end up with someone crying, haha.

  48. I love how content Lulu looks in that last picture where she is hugging her older sister. She just looks so incredibly happy there! Your girls are wonderful!

  49. What a beautiful pictures of your girls together! You must be one proud mama!
