Come and ‘Nog on Our Door
Note: ***Please vote for Angela of Oh She Glows to win Project Food Blog here. She is inspiring and she glows. Oh, how she glows!
I love our cozy little mornings at home, just me and the girls. Three really is company.
This morning the girls went upstairs to play and left me to ponder all of life’s meaningful questions, like how I’m going to explain to Pea Daddy the fifteen text messages I’ve received telling me that Ryan Reynolds is in fact now single (not a one was from Ryan himself, sadly).
Another meaningful question, “What I should bake today?”
I tallied the votes of my informal poll, and then noticed how very, very quiet it was upstairs. I went to investigate, slowly climbing each step, afraid of what I might find. However, I didn’t smell peanut butter or burning plastic, so that’s always a good sign.
Unmade beds?
Sure, but I was more concerned with the various items of clothing strewn about.
I braced myself for full nudity as I entered my room, but instead I found mixing bowls.
More specifically, pajamas, mixing bowls and badly styled hair.
I could relate to two out of three. Have I taught you nothing, girls?! Hair should always be a priority.
I’m so ashamed.
I could have started shoving Cinderella nighties back in drawers. I could have made sure all the beds had their sheets neatly folded in hospital corners. I could have (and Lord knows, should have) lectured about the importance of hairspray use in every hairstyling scenario.
Or I could have taken advantage of their preoccupation and just hit the ‘nog. Hard.
No poll necessary here.
No Egg ‘Nog Scones
Makes 8 large scones
- 3/4 c. dairy-free eggnog (i.e. Silk ‘Nog)
- 1 t. lemon juice
- 1 c. organic unbleached flour
- 1 1/2 c. whole wheat pastry flour
- 1/2 c. organic sugar
- 1 T. baking powder
- 1/2 t. baking soda
- 1/4 t. cream of tartar
- 1/2 t. salt
- 3/4 t. freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/2 c. vegan margarine (i.e. Earth Balance)
Glaze:
- 1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
- 2-3 T. dairy-free eggnog (i.e. Silk ‘Nog)
- few grates of nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine ‘nog and lemon juice and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, combine flours, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt. Generously add grated nutmeg.
Cut in margarine, a tablespoon or so at a time,
and continue to cut in until the mixture is uniform and coarse in texture.
Add in ‘nog mixture, which will now be slightly curdled.
Stir until a dough forms. Mixture may be a bit crumbly, which is fine. Do not overmix.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured board and form into a round circle, approximately 10 inches in diameter and 1 1/2 inches high.
Slice circle into eight equal wedges,
and transfer scones to a baking sheet.
Bake for 20-22 minutes until scones are set.
Meanwhile prepare glaze by combing all ingredients in a small bowl and mixing until it comes to a drizzly consistency.
Let scones cool and then serve drizzled with icing.
Oh. My. Peas.
I can’t even describe the buttery, flaky deliciousness. These were so good they made me stupid. Yumminah, yumminah.
I ate one.
I got the girls dressed.
I ate another one.
I did some hair. With hairspray.
I gave serious thought to eating a third blasted scone.
What can I say?
Down at our rendezvous, three’s company, too!

Ooooooh! I especially love the last photo – so pretty! And, any post with a title referencing Three’s Company gets my prompt attention. After all, John Ritter was a mighty sexy muffin in the late 70′s…!!! And, those scones are mighty sexy with their drizzly goodness.
I’m now trying to get the Three’s Company theme as my ring tone…
oh my gosh your opening to your post made me laugh (and turn red haha). thank you for the mention!
These scones look out of this world. I wouldn’t have shortened my tweet either! I think I will put them on my holiday baking list!
I sincerely admire you, Angela and will be overjoyed when you win!
They were so good they made me stupid!!!!!!! YOU are cracking me up tonight!!! They look out of control amazing….seriously. Yowza
Favorite photo is 3rd from the bottom….NOM!
I was going to say “yumminah yumminah” on your cookie post but I saved it all for myself
What a great title! I’ll think of it when I wake up in a few hours (as I always do) and Three’s Company is on TV. Yes, I turn it on and fall back to sleep to it. Sometimes I listen to the soothing sounds of The Nanny to lull me back to slumber.
I love watching Three’s Company in the middle of the night!
Which did you like better: the Roper years or the Furley years? (Lucky I didn’t ask who you’d rather!)
Oh man, totally the Roper years. My favorite would be when Mr. Roper (i.e. “Staaaaanley…”) would make some inappropriate joke about Jack’s assumed sexuality and then he’d look right at the camera and give it that “heh heh heh” sneer.
I have a Nick-at-Nite problem.
Ah yes, Mr. Roper’s smile at the camera was fantastic! Gotta love that. And Mrs. Roper’s mumus (house dresses, I suppose). I totally agree, by the way, with your landlord choices and your Nick-at-Nite problems.
Mr. Furley’s scarves creeped me out. And the way he sniffed and hiked up his pants.
Blech, the sniff. And the eyeballs!
Love the title and how you carried it through the post!
Your baking genius never ceases to amaze me! These look absolutely ridiculous!
We had them for dinner!
Okay, now I definitely need to buy Silk Nog this year. I haven’t bought Silk since they stopped using organic soybeans, but these look too incredible to not make… Oh, how I love (vegan) eggnog!
Gina, The Fitnessista, made some with cashews today! I’m sure that would work.
I saw you tweet the results of the poll and I was wondering how these would turn out! They look great, Mama. The icing looks fabulous.
I want to drink it.
I can always spot a good Mom when I see one. The signs? Your girls feel comfortable enough to explore and create, and you let them. I love it!
Thanks, Jill. People always ask how I get things done…honestly, they are so creative they don’t need me to entertain them!
you were the first person I thought of when I read about Reynold’s split. :-p
Me too!
You just helped me decide what to make for Christmas morning breakfast! Thank you, because I was seriously having problems. Omgoodness those look good.
I think I will too!
Oh delish. I love that there’s eggnog out there for us non-eggers and dairy-freers. It’s so nice to hold onto my eggnog memories from being a kiddo. These scones would be perfect for Christmas morning! With peppermint tea…or a cup of eggless nog.
Or a homemade eggnog latte
How your book will ever top all of these recipes is a mystery to me, but i am confident that it will! P.S. I never knew the actual lyrics to that song, but my sister and I sure used to sing it a lot…
We’ll be waiting for you…
Oh my! These look incredible. I LOVE scones. And I love that you ate three! I would have totally done the same thing.
I juiced for breakfast, if that helps balance things out…
I know you’re probably just joking… but I think there’s something really beautiful when a woman/girl doesn’t do her hair and just lets it be. A lot of my friends have these complexes about their hair (it’s kinda like the whole weight thing, that if it doesn’t look just so, if it’s not straight or not voluminous, then it’s ugly/not good enough) and it is so, so mental. The other day my friend and I were walking through the store when she eyed a barbie with a play hair set (including a straight iron, blow dryer, etc) and we had COMPLETELY different reactions to it. I, for one, was pissed off. She, however, was stoked and thought it was the most adorable thing ever. I think it’s only adding to the list of things that women use to feel good/bad about themselves when it has absolutely nothing to do with their worth as a human being.
This is not to get on a little soapbox or any of that crap, but… I dunno. I guess I just wanted to say that as much as you might think your hair looks atrocious when it’s “not done” or that you can’t imagine going out with it in its natural state… it’s probably not that bad. I’m sure it’s beautiful (and don’t say it’s not just because I can’t see it, that’ll just be dodging the real issue, man).
Here’s to looking in the mirror and feeling beautiful just because you simply are.
No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Wowsa.
I just thought it was hilarious that they got out their baby hair bows (that I should have gotten rid of long ago) and stuck them haphazardly in each other’s hair.
Ooh, I’m excited to try Silk Nog, eggnog is the flavor I miss most since becoming vegan! These scones look ddeeeliigghhttfullll.
I think it is deeeee-licious.
i love, love, LOVE the background on your computer.
i’ve never made scones before but those just might be worth losing the scone virginity for!
Those are my new business cards, designed by Miss Ashley!
Okay, your pictures of the scones are fabulous!! Probably your best pics yet. And they look good enough that I want to get up off the couch and make them. But I’m lazy.
And you have 5,000 snickerdoodles to eat.
You made my entire day with these pictures.
The scones look delicious and I want to make them! However- unless I missed something, I don’t see the quantity of lemon juice listed in the ingredient list. Could you add it in, or send me a slap upside the head if I stupidly missed it somewhere in the instructions?
And now like everyone else probably does, I have the Three’s Company song stuck in my head!
Fixed it! Thanks!
Yuuum. I’m pretty sure I’m drooling. I have a new tab in my favorites called “MAKE” because I always forget about the great food I want to make… this is being bookmarked.
I <3 how the girls always are cooking like their mommy!
Oh man. I was SO tempted to buy Silk nog at the store yesterday, but I held off, knowing that if I bought it, I would go through it in about .2945 seconds. Now I wish I had gotten some!
Oh man, you’ve got to buy at least one little carton per season. Or maybe eight.
Thank YOU for giving me an excuse to buy some Rice Nog I tried at Whole Foods the other day and promptly became addicted to. These look so tasty!!
You are welcome!
Who doesn’t love scones and eggnog? Sounds like a perfect combination to me. They look delicious!
yumm!! that last photo is tempting, just want to grab it out of the screen!
what a fun start to the morning…your girls are so beautiful!
I loved the “yumminah, yumminah”!!! My husband is now wondering why I am laughing at the computer at 8:00 in the morning…..:)
My husband doesn’t even ask anymore. He just shakes his head and goes and eats a scone.
Those scones look soo good. I think it’s the icing that puts it over the top!! Yum!
I <3 seeing picture of your girls, they are adorable! No egg nog scones are so creative… soooo yummy sounding! Thanks for sharing the recipe
) I CANNOT wait until your cook book comes out ahhh!!!
Oh wow! Those scones look delicious!!
Those look great! And I love that the girls keep each other company when you’re not around, that’s awesome. My brother and I would have left each other screaming (though I’m sure that’s happened in your house too). Did the girls like the scones?
Gigi LOVED them. She said they were the best thing she’s ever tasted. And Lulu just ate the icing off. Typical.
I love how the girls imitate you baking. You’re a good Mama! Gigi and Lulu remind me so much of my two sisters and me. Those “pajama days” when we got lost in a world of make believe are such precious memories now. The only thing that would have made it better would have been coming downstairs to THESE SCONES! Scones make my heart aflutter. I may just need to try these today. Before I change out of my pajamas. Got any bows to spare, Gigi?
Oh, we’ve got a drawer full of bows meant for 3 month-olds. They’d look great on you.
You had me at “‘nog on our door.” Those look incredible.
Now I want to watch Three’s Company..
These scones look delicious. I’m an eggnog addict!
The question is, are you a Chrissy or a Janet fan? I liked Chrissy all the way!
I wouldn’t trust anyone who says they’re a Cindy fan.
And that is when they jumped the shark…
What about Terri Alden(rn)? (The “rn” in parentheses just shows how much I’ve seen her first episode. I do hope you know what I’m talking about.)
You mean the first episode when she is the nurse that Jack is hitting on and she has to give him a shot in the buttocks? Yeah, I may have seen that one a couple hundred times.
oh. holy. nog.
I need these right now. Even though I’m feeling totally sick to my stomach today (or maybe it’s just because I’m totally disgusted by your children’s hairstyling), I would still face the potential consequences of eating a scone.
LOL. I’m so sorry our poor choice in hair accessories had such an impact on you. I should have put up a disclaimer.
First – I love Oh She Glows blog too!!! She does GLO!
My vote is for her and her WONDERFUL creations!
Second – those look simply WONDERFUL! Quick run to the store for Egg Nog and then I can make these!!!
You daughters are adorable and creative! Love the bows!
Let me know if you make ‘em and how you like ‘em!
i love Three’s Company!
And I love glaze/frosting.
The recipe looks fabulous. Glad you and the girls had fun making these. Tis the season for Nog!
I cannot stop singing the theme song.
OMG!…those do look so buttery and I love scones! Great job on only eating two…lol! That third one would of been calling my name too…ha! Happy Holidays!
Thanks, Pam! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you too!
It’s so adorable that they were “baking”
I’ll be interested to see their first baking experiments. Right now whatever they are making looks a little pink…
As does everything in this house…
Wow, I want to make those for my family when they come for our early Christmas this weekend! I love the description: “Yumminah Yumminah”
I told you they made me stupid.
How much lemon juice? It’s not in the ingredient list
Can’t wait to make these!!
Oops…I’m on it! It’s a teaspoon.
Those look so good! I’ve never had eggnog before – weird, huh? I was a really picky eater growing up, I didn’t try eggs, salsa, avocado, salad dressing, tomato sauce, and a couple of other things until I went to college. I’ll have to give these a try, my dad loves eggnog and he’s trying to cut back on animal products so this is perfect (:
You’ve never had eggnog? Oh my! You must fix that. Perhaps with a splash of rum too.
These look sooooo yummo!!!
How in the world do you stay so thin with all this cooking? All this yummo cooking?
Also, I see nothing wrong with teaching your girls to fix their hair. lol They are girls, after all.
I’m sure momma pea has had her breath taken away by her beautiful girls many a time when hair looks a mess. I thought you were funny, momma pea;)
Thanks, Stephanie. And if you saw the way they run around this house 3/4ths of the time, you’d know I was completely joking.
Hahah my hair always resembles something like that when i babysit cause the little girls always want to play hairstylist lol i just hope they go to school if they ever plan on making it as a career! Im not a nog fan, but i never tried the silk kind so i think it deserves a second chance!
If you do not like the flavors of eggnog, you probably won’t like the Silk either…it’s pretty spot on.
I am always so amazed how you come up with a mouthwatering recipe every single day. All of my bookmarks are overloaded with Peas and Thank You recipes. I am SO excited for the book!
Or a printer and a hole punch?
Silk Nog is the best.
Silk Nog isn’t too shabby in coffee either.
Have you seen the Mint Chocolate Silk? I cannot find it and it’s making me crazy!
I also have that exact same microplaner.
I have seen the Mint Chocolate Silk but I haven’t bought it!
Your girls are just so dang gorgeous, and they’re growing so fast!! Everytime I visit your site, they seem to look more mature than the last photos you took of them!!
This recipe looks great, today is my baking day I’m definitely making these!!
Gahh…don’t say that. I’m going to start giving them Red Bull to stunt their growth.
Well it’s decided then – you are definitely never seeing my hair first thing in the morning! I could give your girls a real run for their (hairspray) money.
Yummy scones.
Oh.my.delicious. Way to go! These bad boys will be on our Christmas brunch table…
Yes!!! Enjoy!
Those look awesome! I’ve tried so many of your recipes, and I can’t wait to try these! Maybe for breakfast tomorrow? If I can wait that long!
We learned last night that they make a fine dinner food.
‘Nog is news to me. But, the scones are clearly delectable. I’m sure they’d work out fine with regular eggnog but I actually very interested to try your kind.!
I’m not a fan of scones and yet these look so beautiful.
Three’s Company is a quality show for sure. Actually, I’m not sure which I like better: the show or its theme song (which is now firmly in my head, a’thankyou).
Here I was all ready to make your dough balls for xmas but now you’ve thrown a monkey wrench in my plan…now that I’ve looked at your scones I’m feeling guilty for making only cookie type things and no breakfast baked goods. DECISIONS!
I spent twenty minutes trying to find the theme to upload as my ring tone last night.
Make both!
The pictures in this post were too precious! Thanks for the laughs and the scones look divine. I’m torn between these and peanut butter dough balls now too!
Why choose?
Aww, I love quiet mornings with my little one too. So special. I just know time is going so freaking fast!
These scones look amazing! My daughter is flying in this evening after being away at college for the first time. All she has talked about these past weeks is missing everything about home at Christmas time. She cant wait to sleep in her old bed and snuggle up with her beloved cat “Joe”. What better smell to wake up to on your first morning home but these yummy scones baking! We may have a new Christmas morning treat as well ! Thanks for sharing!
Hope she loves them! Enjoy your time with your daughter!
hey mama pea,
i’m making these tonight.
does the glaze really need 1 and 1/2 c. of powdered sugar? with 3 T. of silk nog? i can’t seem to get the consistency of your glaze in the photos above. mine looks like there’s too much sugar. did u use a whisk or a handheld mixer?
i can smell the scones from the oven already, smells Christmas-y!
thanks!
Angel
I just used a little spoon. Those are the ratios I used. If it’s too thick or thin, adjust the amount of powdered sugar and nog accordingly!
thanks m.pea! i loooooooove ‘em!
Merry Christmas! (too early? =) )
Never too early! Glad you like them!!!
i just realized something, in my 29 years of existence, i’ve never had eggnog, your recipe is a good start, thanks!
lovin’ the ‘nog+nutmeg combo!
Those look AMAZING!!! I can’t wait to make them!
Oh my goodness…scones are one of my favorite baked goods on earth. I can’t even imagine how yummy these are! Can’t wait to make them myself!
Your presentation of the scones look so yummy with the drizzle of frosting and dusted spices! These would be great to make on Christmas morning!
Yes! I may just do that.
holy yums, i love the icing
Just found the perfect excuse to buy that Silk Nog I’ve been eyeing since Thanksgiving…
These look like Christmas morning breakfast. Now to find rice nog instead of silk
Oh yes, that’d work great!
Will you adopt me? I’ll even clean Pea Kitty’s litter box for you!
You got yourself a deal!
I always wonder if you eat your delicious creations. I don’t know how some people resist eating their own baked goodies – it’s my kryptonite.
You make scone baking look so easy! And Silk Nog is such a great holiday drink. I may have to give these a try when I get back home from vacation
Quiet often equals bad in my house. Funny how that happens with small kids. It seems to involve toilet paper de-rolling or my little guy giving his big sister’s Barbies a bath in the toilet. It’s never dull. And I kinda love it, except for when there are bodily fluids/solids to clean up.
Seeing as how I made your pumpkin scones almost daily in November, I have high hopes for this recipe. I may have basked in the glory of the praise for the pumpkin scones when everyone I gave them to raved about them, so I look forward to the praise I’ll get for these.
I think I like these even better than the pumpkin ones.
Wow, those sound amazing! I love ‘nog so much…I think I’ll make them for my two guys on Saturday morning
Thanks- these are really good. I have a serious nutmeg addiction, and these are perfect. I’m always kind of afraid of scones, but these came out so good and were so easy! Thanks again.
Yayy!!!! (waving arms wildly in air)
You did it again love the name of the recipe and love the scones! Look delicious! I love the glaze on top!!!
Great recipe! Thanks Mama peas! I made the dough last night, refrigerated it, and plopped them in the oven this morning. The kitchen smelled so good and they were a big hit with the rest of my family! Everyone said the glaze was a great addition and were shocked to find out they were vegan (aka: healthier than regular egg nog scones
Made these today for breakfast…..so YUMMY!
Those look amazing!!!!!!!
This blog is so precious. I love your picture and intro on the side of your blog.
Love Love Love Love Love! Made these today…I will not share with anyone but me! =]
I wanted to make those as soon as you posted this! I made them tonight, and they were fantastic! Thanks so much for the recipe! It should be in the cookbook.
Great! We are going to have these Christmas morning.
It’s too late for this book…maybe a second?
Wow! Just made these last night and they were amazing. I am going to make them for Christmas morning but of course I had to do a trial run before serving them to all the relatives.
They were melt-in-your-mouth last night and they were still good this morning, firmer but still moist and not at all dried out. So I’ll be able to make these tonight and they’ll be ready for everyone to grab on Christmas morning! Also I plan to form the dough into 2 circles and cut 16 mini-scones since there will be so many other treats around tomorrow.
Thanks for a wonderful recipe! I think the grated nutmeg on the top really brought it all together.
Wonderful! I’m making them for Christmas too!
Just made these tonight and they were so delicious!! I actually couldn’t believe how great they tasted when we tried them. Thanks so much for this delicious recipe.
I’ve recently started following your blog and love it so far! Happy New Year!
Thanks, Allison! Glad you loved them!
I’ve had this recipe in my files since last year and finally got to make it now that the Silk Nog is out again. These turned out delicious and were so easy. I’m always a little scared of any dough recipe. Thanks Mama Pea!
Thanks for the feedback! So glad you enjoyed ‘em.
