Recipeas Worth Repeating: Anytime Cookies
One of the chief complaints Pea Daddy has about being married to me, aside from the constant broccoli and hairspray fumes, is that since I am always creating new recipes, I rarely revisit the old ones. And if Pea Daddy has proven anything by his closet, it’s that he’s loyal to his favorites.
If I’ve proven anything by my ever-changing hairstyles and hair colors, it’s that I’m not loyal to mine. Except for hairspray. I’ll never leave you, my love.
I thought we could all use a healthy snack option after the powdered sugar, Earth Balance and peanut butter coma we’ve been stumbling around in. We are no strangers to snacks.
Huge hair, huge appetite.
I think I hear “I’m hungry” at least thirty times a day. I trust their tummies though, and if the girls are hungry, I feed them. Though not always what they want, when they want.
Like at 8 a.m.
Mommy? I’m starrrrrrrving, can I have a pickle?
A piece of gum?
A candy cane?
A cookie?
I know she’s talking about the dough balls, but I play dumb. It’s surprisingly easy.
And that’s where my old friend, the Anytime Cookie comes in. It lets me say, “Yes. You can have a cookie.” Even now.
Anytime Cookies
Makes 1 dozen large cookies
- 1/4 c. ground flaxseed
- 1/2 c. water
- 1 c. unbleached organic flour
- 1/2 c. organic whole wheat pastry or white whole wheat flour
- 1/2 c. old fashioned oats or oat flour
- 1/2 t. baking soda
- 1/2 t. ground cinnamon
- 1/4 t. ground nutmeg
- 1/4 c. canola oil
- 1/4 c. non-dairy or organic milk
- 1/4 c. unrefined organic sugar
- 1/4 c. unrefined organic brown sugar
- 1/4 c. roughly chopped dried apricots
- 1/4 c. raisins
- 1 t. vanilla extract
- 1/4 c. chopped almonds (or any other nut desired) and/or dark chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
In a small bowl, combine ground flaxseed with water and set aside. This is the way we make a “flax egg…”
In a large bowl, combine flours, oats, baking soda, spices, chopped dried fruits and chocolate chips or nuts.
To flaxseed/water mixture, add sugar, oil, milk and vanilla. Mix well.
Don’t look so skeptical. Have I ever led you astray?
Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
Note the Huge Hair Cam shot.
Drop 12 spoonfuls of cookie dough onto cookie sheet sprayed lightly with non-stick spray.
Bake at 350 degrees for 12 minutes.
I have no idea why Gigi always wants to help bake. I think she just likes spending time with me.
And cookie dough.
Cool for one minute on pans and then transfer to cooling rack.
I gave one to Lulu, who immediately said, “Not this! A dough ball!”
But I talked her into it.
I thought Gigi would be too full from her eight morning snacks and paddle o’ dough to want one from the oven.
I thought wrong.
At least she’s fed and happy, I thought. Until I heard it…
“I’m hungry, when’s lunch?”

Your kiddos have the best facial expressions of all time.
I agree. It’s amazing that she can capture it all on camera, too!
I think my girls are pretty predictable. I knew that was going to happen with Lulu when I handed her a cookie.
OMG…this is the bane of my existence! Jacob says he’s hungry ALL. THE. TIME. Our children have hollow legs, it seems. I get so tired of trying to think of things for him to eat! It’s truly exhausting.
And he, too, asks for pickles at 8am!
I know. But if you feed Jacob like I feed the girls, I have to remind myself that:
a) they are growing;
b) the whole foods they are eating are lower in calories, and thus they need to eat more often;
c) they are dancing, jumping, running and playing all day!
No wonder they are hungry!
True, true and true. Thanks for the reminder (((hug)))
I too sometime forget about the tried and true favorites, but I very loyal to most cookies.
And um, what is that picture of underneath the empty blue plate? do I want to know?
Actually, she was showing Lulu how to draw a camera. They were drawing pictures for Ashley
and wow did I forget proofread the comment!
Gigi must be the warmest kid on the planet—I see her sleeveless, and I feel like you must live in Tahiti. Tahiti stateside. Lucky her!
No. She is obsessed with “camisoles.” She sees me wear them and so she gets excited to wear them too.
I will take these cookies…anytime!! Of course lulu asked for a dough ball instead…hahaha Ummm, where did that super cute blue dot towel come from??? I’m in love.
World Market!
I like this recipe for many reasons, one in particular that it only makes 12 cookies…which in my opinion, is the perfect amount. Unless one is making dough balls that is.
Ok i need to ask… how do you do Gigi’s hair?? It always looks so cute.
I really need to stop reading your stuff at night right before i am about ready to go to bed. I end up starving, salivating, tossing and turning until morning time when i can fulfill my empty stomach that seems to like to make growing grumbling noises all night long O.o again… those cookies look so yummy! I think i will be making some tomorrow for sure.
As crazy as it sounds, I did a hair tutorial post here:
http://peasandthankyou.com/2010/09/30/its-picture-day/
Big hair it up at your own risk.
Thank you for that… now to test on my daughter wahhahaha.. or better yet myself O.o
Shoot!! Now I’m hungry. Does the anytime count at 12:02 a.m.??
Yes. Yes, it does. I speak from experience.
Gigi. In a tank top. In the winter. Classic!
And I have to agree, the facial expressions say it all.
anytime cookies are genius! i ALWAYS want a cookie:-)
I have Lulu’s reaction too… where are the dough balls?! Thought I think I’d enjoy eating these instead. Since I have no control around dough balls.
Do you want me to give you the shpeel I gave Lulu? “But look, they have raisins and apricots and chocolate chips…”
Everyone needs an anytime cookie. Good recipe to keep in mind for the next cookie craving.
This recipe sounds fantastic! Can’t wait to make a batch…
And the pics are adorable, as always.
Cookies sound and look perfect but I can’t get over how darn cute those faces are! You have a beatiful family!

LC
Thanks. They are my little sweet peas.
It amazes me how much food little kids put back a day. However, they have to eat so much as they are constantly moving!!!
These cookies look awesome though – I am always looking for a healthy cookie to shove down my husband’s throat when he’s not shoving chocolate chip cookie cough ice cream down it.
And calorically, if you add it up, it’s really not that much that they are eating. We deal in quality AND quantity around here.
That is my husband’s #1 complaint, too! When he likes a dinner, he usually says, “This is great–too bad I’ll never see it again.”
Lol…Lulu’s expression is priceless. I guess once you go dough, you never go back
I’ve learned that the hard way.
Hahahaha this is adorable. I love the healthy cookie idea – you don’t have to say no! And too funny about Mr. Pea… we are the same way, my husband likes to stick to the same ol’ same ol’ every day while I like to do something different. Oh well, he’s learning…
Got to keep it fresh, keep it new!
Awesome cookie ideas! And who wouldn’t ask for a dough ball instead?
They are so cute! Your posts make me want kids more than anything
Anytime cookies are such a good idea. I’m with Lulu though – I want a dough ball
I love when you can eat multiple cookies without sending yourself into a diabetic coma. That’s why sometimes healthy cookies > unhealthy cookies…except when it comes to the dough balls, of course. I’ve been making the Super Charge Me cookies from Eat, Drink and Be Vegan every week or so for a year and a half now. My family just calls them “Gabriela cookies”….so I guess I’m a repeater
I’ve made the Super Charge Me cookies too. I like these better
I like this idea. I’m going to pass it along to my sister who has a 3 year old. I think she would appreciate this! Thanks1
Cookies for breakfast now sounds like a GREAT idea. Love this!
I would like to have these for my breakfast this morning! And as always, love getting a daily dose of cuteness from your girls!
I love them for breakfast too.
Hahahhaha, Gigi’s hair!!! I die.
I love “anytime” cookies! It relieves the guilt from eating 10 of them
Now hold on a second there…you can have one anytime, not ten.
lol..I hear a million times a day…can I have a snack? :/ While I am at work and on the phone with their dad, I hear…can I have a snack? lol…my kids don’t even eat meals anymore because I break everything down into snack size….I love your girl’s hair…it always looks adorabel!!
I figure as long as the snacks are healthy, why not? I’m a big snacker too, so that probably doesn’t help.
your such a cool momma, great recipe!
i love how healthful these are…anytime indeed!
I love the girl’s hair. It is beyond adorable!
Just yesterday I was thinking that I need to make some of my favorite recipes again. I’m constantly trying new things. These anytime cookies look great. My 11-year-old is hungry ALLLLLLL the time. I think it’s only going to get worse as he morphs into a teenager. And he plays sports. So, I’d better have a huge supply of healthy snacks on hand at all times!
Absolutely! And delicious nutritious food doesn’t have to always been different and new!
Your girls’ expressions are priceless! As are you accompanying words to them. I might sub the name for these cookies as “ALL the Time,” though, if you don’t mind
That’s just fine by me.
The pic of your daughter with the spatula is frame worthy. She’s gorgeous!
Thanks, she gets it from her dad
Gosh, those girls are just too cute! And all I have to say about the cookies is “Yum!”
omg their faces say it all!! These cookies are such a great idea. I shall share with all my friends who are moms to toddlers:)
Thanks Paige! They’ve eaten three today and it’s not even noon.
oooo I’ll take one of those for breakfast!
It always amazes me how much little girls can eat! I feel like I’m always preparing food; makes me wonder how moms of teenage boys do it.
I know…it’s going to be crazy when they are older, in sports, etc. I’m not feeding their boyfriends. They aren’t allowed to have boyfriends, come to think of it.
I read your blog for the recipes and the laughter but my 2 year old son just said (after looking at your picture), “Mom, that’s cool hair!” I guess the whole family are fans!
He has crazy taste in women. Look out for him.
I love how you called them “Anytime Cookies” – so much more appealing than something like “healthy cookies”
How do you store your cookies so that they last a few days?!
These I keep on the counter…they get eaten up quickly. I keep the dough balls in the fridge.
I have the opposite problem. I eat the same few things CONSTANTLY until I’m completely sick of them and then start searching for new favorites to eat to death!! lol

just sayin’ someone might like this …
We bought it last year. She was carting it around like her best friend and it shattered.
We may need a replacement.
Love healthy cookies (since I have absolutely no self control when it comes to bite size treats)! So cute that Gigi always helps you in the kitchen. Whenever my mom DID bake (rare), I would love to help! And then…there was Easy Bake Oven and I no longer needed mama!
She’d love an Easy Bake Oven. Hell, I’d love an Easy Bake Oven. I never got one.
Once again you made me smile. I always think of Chloe when I see pictures of your girls and hope that I can be even half as great a mom as you are to Lulu and Gigi. I get tons of great ideas from reading your blog and I definitely plan on spending lots of time in the kitchen with my little peanut when she gets bigger.
Thanks for brightening my day..
Just catching up on the last few posts and it would seem that you’re in glasses these days – for that you have my special sympathy (I’m back in contacts now but am on 2 daily prescriptions and wear the glasses for more hours per day than I ever did before. Barf.). However, should your Lasik consult go well and lead to a successful surgery, you also have my special jealousy (I’ve been deemed unfit for such a procedure). Maybe we could trade an eyeball? That might balance things out. I can pay you in free babysitting via Skype.
Let’s each rock one good eye and some sequined eye patches! Hopefully good news on Monday!!!
I applaud your daughters for their wonderful intuitive eating
. I wouldn’t mind taking lessons from them… of course, cookies included
.
hehe- I love when kiddos have unique hairstyles! One of my nieces consistently has a unique hairstyle I’ve never seen, but then it will change ever 6 months or so (she just turned 3).
Adorable! I want to be in your kitchen baking too
Meri
You are the cookie GOODNESS, women
Yet another post to make me laugh and love your cute family and you!
Can I just say that you make me excited to have kids.
too cute! And it looks like the girls enjoyed the cookies!
Yes, you can!
Thanks!
I love this recipe! Not only because the cookies look awesome, but because of all the healthy ingredients you included in the recipe (like flax, oats, almonds – amazing!) I’ll definitely have to try this soon – if your kids liked them I’m sure my cookie-loving husband will too! Thanks for sharing
You are very welcome. I hope your husband loves them!
Lulu has the world’s best cut eye. I hope to some day have mine be as good.
I absolutely LOVE Gigi’s face expression after you write “Don’t look so skeptical. Have I ever led you astray?” The picture following it is classic! It’s like she is saying “mom, do you really want me to answer that?!!”.
As I always say- you have such a beautiful family (INSIDE and out!)
Love,
Barbara
“
Another one for my list!! EVERY time I make cookies, I come here first. We rarely have enough eggs and never have butter or cows milk…so I know you’ll have something I can create/bake that will still taste good
Thanks, Heather. This one is a keeper!
Cookies and anytime are two words I like to see together.
