Just Your Typical Morning

No one could ever say our breakfasts are boring.

I usually head out for a run or to lift weights pretty early, but I like to make sure the fort is held down before I leave.  Today that included breakfast appetizers.

There’s always time for a quick warm up with the old Cheerios toss.

It may be a choking hazard.  It may entail eating dropped cereal off the floor.  It may not be teaching “good manners.”  But it sure is fun.

After I put on my shoes to depart, it prompted the most logical activity for the girls: a “new school shoes” walk-off.  Stomp to the death, ladies.

Lulu calls these shoes “Twinkle Toes.”  Her toes have been twinkling for about 36 hours straight now, and if you’ve never tried it, sleeping in shoes isn’t easy.

There is no more appropriate time for synthetic suede, fuchsia pom pom boots than a 90-degree day in August.

After a sweaty half an hour or so, I returned to make breakfast.  Cat-haired covered Cheerios only curb hunger for so long.  Of course there were activities planned for the interim.  Like painting.

And deep conversation.  The topic at hand was  coveted “Pillow Pet” that Gigi and Lulu won’t stop talking about.

After Pea Daddy asked what a Pillow Pet was, Lulu explained,”It’s a pillow…that’s a pet, Daddy!”

Duh.

If I get her one, can we exchange it for the pet we already have?

Just asking.

At one point during the intellectual discourse, someone dropped the paints on the ground.

Naturally this led to a rousing version of “Pants on the Ground,” with the lyrics changed to “Paints on the Ground.”

You can’t hear that song and NOT dance.

Paints on the ground…paints on the ground…

Looking like a fool with your paints on the ground…

Wait, who’s making breakfast?

Ginger Peach Pancakes

Makes 8-12 large pancakes

  • 1 1/3 c. whole wheat pastry flour
  • 1 T. baking powder
  • 2 t. ginger, finely minced (you can grate, if you prefer)
  • 1/4 t. salt
  • 2 t. stevia or sweetener of choice
  • 1 1/2 c. non-dairy or organic milk
  • 1 t. vanilla extract
  • 2 T. canola oil
  • 1 large peach, peeled and chopped

In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, ginger, salt and stevia.  In a separate bowl, combine milk, vanilla and oil.  Pour wet mixture into dry and stir until just combined and let batter rest.

Place a skillet sprayed with non-stick cooking spray over medium heat.  Pour batter into pan to form pancakes.
Sprinkle chopped peaches on top.

Let cakes cook on one side for several minutes, until bubbles start to form and pancakes are golden brown.  Flip pancakes and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Serve with maple syrup and Earth Balance, if desired.

Then we ate!

Bliss is eating ginger peach pancakes in fuchsia boots.

I am a responsible parent and we waited at least sixty minutes before departing for our now daily swim.  I’m just grateful I was able to pry the Twinkle Toes from Lulu’s feet.

If I only I had convinced Gigi.

If you haven’t tried it, swimming in fuchsia boots isn’t easy.

  1. hippierunner says:

Ahh! Too cute! The mention of “Pants on the Ground” as “Paints on the Ground” had me laughing out loud! Then that picture of the peach in all it’s wet droplet glory had me craving one even thought I’m more of a nectarine girl!

  2. Ashley says:

Bahhahaha…dying at that photo of Pea Kitty, lol. I am not a cat fan. No one in my family is and I’m allergic. Achoooooo. I admitted to Gena today that you are my blog crush along w/the fab Gena herself + Ashley [neverhomemaker] :) I’ll be over in 5…for a pancake + a pillow pet + painting!!

  3. You give new meaning to LOL (as in, I really DO laugh out loud). I seriously swore I’d never nanny again, but I think I might consider dropping my current career if you are hiring.

  4. I would have been all over those boots when I was Gigi’s age. So awesome with the paints on the ground. Mama Pea, you gave me an ear worm!

I love peaches in pancakes, they caramelize a little and it’s soooo good!

  5. Pearl Lee says:

so cute! hahaha. and wow – i’ve never thought of adding ginger to pancakes, but that’s probably cause i’m not that big of a fan of ginger (although it doesn’t apply to ginger candy… which totally doesn’t make sense).

  6. Lulu is looking like a radiant beauty in these pics…omg did she just grow up overnight like from a baby/toddler to a little girl!!? Holy moly growth spurt, maturity spurt, and of course hair that I envy spurt (it’s so full and va-va-voom!). Anyway, wow, they grow up so fast. Some days when Skylar wakes up from her nap, i swear to god, she grew and aged. In 2.5 hrs. It’s crazy!

    Great pancakes.

And kids and shoes, always an adventure!
    :)

  7. awww too cute! lovin the pink boots!

  8. Sana says:

So can we get the back story on Pea Kitty? I don’t think anyone knows what is going on!

All you need to know is she wants me dead. And I want a new couch.

(Really, though, I may do a post about this soon…)

  9. Tina says:

Those boots are adorable! I found M some brown suede boots at the consignment sale last week and my husband thought I was crazy. I said she’s going to be cute.

And what is it about that pants on the ground song that is so catchy? I was just singing it in my head reading through the post. Although of course paints instead of pants.

  10. Gigi’s poses are too cute.

  11. Lauren says:

I bet the ginger and peach went so well together. I must keep this in mind.

  12. chelsey says:

hahaha you are seriously so funny – and perhaps one of the best mommies I have ever seen! Your girls are so lucky to have you.

Those pancakes look so good – I can’t WAIT for the day when I get to stay at home and cook with maybe some work on the side! :)

  13. Its neat that you have such a detailed keeping of the girls as they grow upppy! akes and swimming – I think they must be happy!
Curious if you ever have down-time to read or anything…favorite books? Recommendations? I’m always looking for new reads and I notice some bloggers mention some. Wondering if you have any that stand out as must-reads?

  14. pants on the ground ——-> paints on the ground LOL Thank you for making me laugh this morning :-)

  15. RhodeyGirl says:

I can’t believe it’s back to school time! Gigi is such a little punk with her pose- I LOVE it. She reminds me a lot of myself when I was little. :)

I wonder how they even came to learn about Pillow Pets? I haven’t seen anything on TV or anything? I feel so out of the loop with kids toys.. I never have a clue what to buy my little cousins!

  16. I am definitely trying those pancakes, but instead with your oatmeal pancake recipe! Love the fuchsia boots. You have a fashionista on your hands already.

  17. Aimee says:

OMG I was cracking up at the pillow pet reference. My 3 year old son is just dying to have one of his own. We passed a kiosk of them at the mall the other day. We had to hold, cuddle, and pet each pillow pet. All the while my son gave his best plea as to why he needed one. All eyes were on me…how is she going to handle this one. Needless to say we did not leave with a pillow pet, just one teary eyed little guy going on and on about his mean mommy. If I can talk him into getting rid of the ratty giant stuffed bunny he takes everywhere with then maybe we can negotiate a pillow pet!

I’m going to try making those pancakes right now. I was drooling at work last night.

Your girls are just adorable. Love love love Gigi’s boots.

  18. Those pancakes look amazing! It has been far too long since I’ve made pancakes at home, I’m going to have to get on that really soon. Ginger peach…yum! :)

  19. that picture of gigi painting is one of the most beautiful pictures i’ve ever seen…i know i say this all the time, but your girls are so beautiful!

and now i will depart for work with ‘pants on the ground’ embedded in my head…thanks :)

  20. Jen says:

Pancakes look like heaven, I will have to make them for my monkeys! My 5 year old has been wearing her bright pink school shoes every day for hours at a time to “break them in before school starts.” Gotta love her logic ;)

  21. Oh those pancakes!

The girls are looking so big! And Livi wants a pillow pet too – she seems to have forgotten for now though. I think she wants the unicorn one. I’ll probably get her one for Christmas. What the heck!

  22. You can’t go wrong with the boots! The pancakes sound great! I am loving Georgia peaches right now. They are just so good! Have a great day Sarah!

  23. Aw lulu’s smiling face is so precious. And I would be twinkling up my toes if I had a mommy like you who could for me all the time!

  24. I laughed outloud at the Pillow… that’s a pet!! My nieces are obsessed. They’re actually super soft and comfy, but such a simple concept!! I love your cat, what a sweet little guy.

  25. Kacy says:

Need a nanny? I’ll do it for free if you just feed me those delicious meals every day. I’ll even deal with Pea Kitty’s litter box :)

  26. I always loved new shoes. In the second grade my “every day” shoes were bright blue, sparkly platform shoes. Oh dear.

  27. Janelle says:

Glad I’m not the only one who believes in the breakfast appetizer. Those pancakes sound amazing, I’m cueing them up for tomorrow!

  28. Angela says:

Your family is so beautiful! I love your blog. I can’t believe how much Lulu has grown. Those pancakes look delicious, I hope when I finally raise my own children I have it as much together as you do.

  29. Emily says:

My boyfriend isn’t a fan of ginger, but I love it. And, I’m making breakfast, so guess who wins. (:

  30. Meg says:

I wanna play the Cheerios toss! :D

  31. Holly says:

    hahaha…such a diva that gigi is :)

  32. Marie says:

I am loving Gigi’s pink boots! And “paints on the ground.” Awesome.

  33. Brooke says:

My girl Pookie and I are OBSESSED with pillow pets!!!! We babysit this little girl all summer who got TWO pillow pets for her birthday and we were so jealous. Don’t waste your time and $$ on shipping by buying them online… I saw them at a kiosk stand at the mall and also spotted them on the Walgreens shelves…

Love the fuchsia boots with the fur.

  34. Maren says:

I love your comments about your cat. I can just hear the sarcasm in your voice! I know deep down you love that kitty! How could you not?! :)

  35. This was such a warm fuzzy to my soul. Without sounding like a voyeur — I just think your children are TOOOOOOOO adorable and beautiful!
It is so nice to read such pleasantries (0:

    You are blessed!

  36. Dorry says:

lol about paints on the ground. love it. your girls are darling.

  37. Kaye says:

Those girls are just too darn cute :)
I’m bookmarking this recipe…sounds so good.

  38. Angela says:

I’m so laughing right now. Pea kitty reminds me of my cat growing up. Her name was muffy, and if you ever really do want to get rid of her let me know. Although Justin would probably protest! Dang! Now I’m going to have pants on the ground in my head all day.

Do you hear the tires screeching from me speeding out of my driveway and coming to your house. Pea Kitty, er…I mean, “Muffy” and I are on our way.

  39. Ginger peach pancakes!! Brilliant!
I was wondering if you still ran these days :-)

Maybe I’ll do a post about workouts soon, and include the transition from runner to now. I was just thinking yesterday how there is probably a lot of negative self-talk in the blog community because we are all not “runners.”

  40. Ananda says:

Did I miss something? Why do you hate that poor kitty so much?

It’s love/hate. She’s been trying to kill me and our couch ever since we had kids. Sounds to me like you are taking her side. That would be a big, BIG mistake.

  41. Ooh, I know what I’ll be making this weekend…

  42. Andrea says:

Hilarious! My son Sam wanted to sleep in his flip flops when he first got them. He has a very unhealthy obsession with those things that is rubbing off on his little brother!

  43. Christine says:

I’m moving back in with my parents post-college in a couple of weeks (and I’m actually really excited. What can I say? I’m a strange 22-year-old. Also, they are awesome an have a much higher grocery budget than me, which I plan to latch on to like a freaking mosquito in July). Anyway, the first thing I thought when I saw these pancakes was, “YES!!! In two weeks I will have PEOPLE TO COOK BREAKFAST FOR!” And let me tell you, these are high on the to-make list.

  44. Kelly says:

Hello darling, came across a deal for Pillow Pets just in case the Pea Girls HAVE to have them for Christmas. :)
    http://www.orangeonions.com/c=o6tNLJ1iMOa3eqR4QvofyUfiQ/results.cgis?catalog=DEFAULT&keywords=pillow+pet

Use additional promo code WFAA10 and the price goes to $7.64. Not sure what shipping is, sometimes that kills the deal, but might be worth looking at. Ryan has a turtle Pillow Pet that he adores.

    Heart you!

  45. Sarah says:

I love this! I definitely remember only being able to wear school shoes around the house until it was time to actually go to school. It made them that much more special to wear! Also, I now get your Pillow Pals reference from Twitter – I save your blog for last to read because it’s my favorite so I was a bit behind the 8-ball. I still kind of want one though :)

It tickles me that you save my blog for last. :)

  46. Lindsay says:

Your little girls are absolutely adorable. You were very blessed with two amazing little ones. When does Gigi start school?? Is she ready and most importantly, are you ready??

Not until mid-September. It actually won’t be so bad this year…it’s only 1/2 day kindergarten and the school is literally two blocks from our house :) . Next year I’ll be a wreck when she goes full day and Lu’s in preschool too.

  47. I love adding ginger to pancakes! So good for you too :)

Your girls are growing up so fast… they look so much older than they did last summer, it’s crazy. Still incredibly adorable, of course!

  48. Emily says:

Breakfast appetizers, workout, and an amazing recipe!!! Supermom for sure :)

  49. My husband is a pro at pancakes, I couldn’t make them correctly if you paid me. He makes them every saturday so I’ll be requesting these this weekend!!! The combo of peach and ginger sound so good!

  50. Amy says:

Oh, the pillow pets… My son can recite the commercial.

  51. I want to come over for breakfast!!! Love ginger and peach ; ) YUM

  52. Meghan says:

I am not going to lie, I kind of love that you hate Pea Kitty a little….I am not a cat person–I feel like they are always judging you with their little cat eyes…either that or waiting until you are off guard so they can pounce….

LOL. Just read this aloud to Pea Daddy. Finally, someone who understands. Bless you.

  53. Rachael says:

Sometimes, I think I’m alone in my lack of kitty lovin’. It takes me back to the days when all the other little girls loved ponies, and having spent too much time mucking out stables (my uncles believed in child labor) I didn’t share in their equine affection. Thank you for continuing to validating my hesitant affection for all things cat.

  54. Hayley says:

Careful with the cheerios. They can be TOO fun. When I was a child my bedtime routine included taking a bowl of cheerios to bed and one by one tossing them onto the floor. I don’t know why my parents allowed this, but it was probably less fun being the cleaner than the thrower.

  55. Rene says:

I am kinda new to your blog…but I am loving every minute of it…the picture with the caption “Bliss is eating ginger peach pancakes in fuchsia boots” means so much to me and just hits home because I have two little girls that look similar in age to yours. I hope you have time to see my cuties drinking green smoothies, hopefully I posted my blog name correctly!

Off to check it out! Thanks, Rene!

  56. Marianne says:

Oh Pea Kitty – never any love for you. I now have to go check out this Pants On The Ground song…my cousin’s wife sings it at random, and I’ve always just thought it was something crazy she came up with.

  57. Erin D. says:

Embarassingly enough, I’m the proud owner of two pillow pets (I’m 23)! My boyfriend bought one for me as a joke around Christmastime, but honestly he loves sleeping on it more than I do. Of course I had to reciprocate by buying him his own for his 24th birthday…
