Today, More or Less
It was a good day, more or less.
Though I could have done with less cats waking me up at 3:30 am puking on my carpet.

Yeah, it’s not so fun to have your sleep interrupted, is it Pea Kitty?

Anyone want a cat? I’ll pay you more than you can imagine.
I could have done with less clouds, shivering girls and blue lips at swim lessons.

Though I’ll always take more absolutely fearless jumps!

I could do with less talk of Halloween costumes on August 18th. Especially costumes that involve the word, “goth,” “sexy” or “Snookie.”

I’m a little more inclined to go for costumes like a “Cupcake Fairy.” Especially if she’s a “Vegan Cupcake Fairy.”

I’m slightly less excited about mother/daughter costumes.

Okay, FAR less excited.
I’d definitely like less scars with less than impressive tales behind their accrual.

You know when people say, “I’d rather have a hot poker in my eye than dress up in mother/daughter poodle skirts?” They speak out of ignorance, never in fact having felt a hot poker, fresh out of the campfire, branding them forever.
I have.
It’s even more horrible than it sounds. That’s why I’ll take my roasted marshmallows in pie form. It’s s’more safe that way.

S’mores Pie
Serves 8
- 1 c. non-dairy or organic chocolate chips
- 1/2 c. vanilla non-dairy or organic creamer
- 1/4 c. non-dairy or organic milk
- 2 oz. silken tofu (can substitute 1 “flax egg:” 1 T. ground flax + 3T. water, if soy averse)
- 1 prepared organic graham cracker crust
- 1 1/2 c. vegan marshmallow cream (i.e. Suzanne’s Ricemellow Creme)
Preheat oven to 350.
Place chocolate chips in a large heatproof bowl.

You may want to do some quality assurance at this point.

Combine creamer and milk, and heat either in a saucepan or a microwave safe bowl until very hot, but not yet boiling. Pour milk mixture over chocolate chips and let stand for 30 seconds to a minute.

Whisk together chocolate and milk until fully combined.

Pour mixture into a blender with either the silken tofu or your flax egg.

Blend well. Pour chocolate filling into pie crust and conduct more quality assurance.

Bake for 25 minutes, until edges are starting to set, but center is still slightly loose.

Allow pie to cool completely before refrigerating for 1-3 hours.
Preheat oven broiler. Spread chilled pie with marshmallow cream.

Broil pie for 30-60 seconds, until topping is starting to brown.

Slice and serve.

True to it’s name, everyone wanted s’more.

I was so happy to see them in age appropriate, lace garter-free costumes, I couldn’t say no.

Let’s just hope this cat doesn’t leave me a hairball at 3:30 a.m.

i didnt think there was anything wrong with a snookie costume.. hmph.. im going to have to return mine..
I didn’t know that vegan marshmellow fluff existed! This is cool. (I’m not a vegan but I still think it’s cool! The crap that’s in regular marshmellow skeeves me out.)
I’ll think good thoughts about you and the cat. No hairballs allowed.
I can’t believe a hot poker burned you. OUCH!
I am a complete sucker for anything with the word s’more in it. If that word is anywhere on the label the chances of me buying it are about…….10 in 10. Needless to say this has gotten me in trouble on a few occasions
This recipe looks amazing and the ingredients are great! This will be made upon my return to a kitchen next week without a doubt! Thanks for sharing this!
Yummy yum yum. Feels like Halloween meets campfire meets pie.
oh and love that you are posting more pea kitty pics.
You have no reason to believe me but just today as i was driving i thought to myself, crap. Halloween is in 2 months. That means in order to avoid picked-over costume issues, i really need to be thinking about buying a costume in a month. A month?! Where did this year go??!!
Mother-daughter costumes…are you kidding me?! NO WAY would i ever!
S’mores Pie
A couple annoying questions…I hate it when readers do this to me…LOL
Flax egg. Ok do you think that the “egg” and it’s cohesive properties is at all destroyed by blending the hell outta it in the Vita? I always “fold in” my flax eggs into recipes but maybe I have been wasting my own time for years…
Just a comment…
“until very hot, but not yet boiling. Pour milk mixture over chocolate chips and let stand for 30 seconds to a minute.”–
I had no idea that just super warm liquid could actually melt choc chips. I always put them into the micro WITH the liquid for 30 secs at a time. I like the idea of keeping them outta the micro as they can scorch on a dime. Your way is much safer and less apt to end up with a bowl of burnt choc chips that can occur faster than kale can burn
This is a stellar post and recipe! YUM!
Averie, not sure about your flax theory…I’ll have to test it out. I don’t think it would really change the binding qualities of the flax, but we shall see!
My word. S’mores pie. Adopt me, please.
Hahahaha Pea Kitty awoken from beauty rest. Priceless.
Silly Mama Pea, every day is Halloween!
That pie looks stellar! Is it easier to cut using the marshmallow fluff? I tried a similar concoction with marshmallows and you couldn’t cut the dang thing!
Oh the mother/daughter costumes. Ack! I got M’s costume at the consignment sale earlier this week. It was a cute duck costume for $5. She likes ducks…I like bargains. It worked. I may “dress up” this year. Which would be the extent of wearing an orange shirt and placing black construction paper cutouts on my pregnant belly to make a pumpkin. All for the humor of the little one. The things we do…
Tina, this thing was a piece of cake to cut (groan). Almost too easy…I couldn’t stop cutting off little tastes
Um s’mores pie?! Ok I am making that stat.
Haha, that is the WORST sound! I hate cleaning up pet puke. LoL.
But on a completely different note, that s’mores pie looks amazing! How do you like the Ricemellow cream? I’m very curious about this stuff.
I thought the cream was pretty darn authentic, though not quite as artificially fluffy. Now you’ve got me thinking fluffernut sandwiches…
Can I just say YUMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I need to make this!!!!! U have the BEST recipes EVER!! I am so excited for your book to come out next year!!! Smores is one of my fave treats, and you just made my day with this : )
Congrats to Gigi too for jumping off the diving board!! I just saw your last post, I know that had to be scary , congrats to her!!!!
*Lulu’s Face in the pic above is Classic!!! Hilarious, she is too much! *
That looks SO good! Your cat puking in the middle of the night is #203948 why I dislike cats (sorry Pea Kitty).
Is your husband a vegan as well? I’m trying to shift my husband’s eating habits so I don’t have to make 2 meals every night.
I’d say Pea Daddy is about 95% vegan. A slice of cheese sneaks on his veggie burger maybe once every two weeks and then of course, there’s ice cream about as frequently too.
Oh my. Smores pie looks wonderful.
I am excited for halloween , just to see your kids adventures — brings me back to a kids time again – such a magical time. Love seeing that. Distraction from the world.
As for your kids fearless swimming, I am impressed…I was worrier as a kid…a bit anxious and fearful…I know that my parents contributed to that, but not that they could help it. They were once kids too and that was the only thing they knew maybe.
Omg. THAT pie.
I have a fierce s’more obsession, so I will for sure NEED to make this. Yes, need.
that pie looks incredible!!!
I’m having some non-vegans over tomorrow and am looking to impress. If I can find the ricemallow within a 50 mile radius, this pie is a go for sure.
Thanks!
I like that thoughts of Halloween have already started at your house. They’ve started at mine too, but I don’t have any kids!
I’m wondering what that ‘ricemellow” tastes like… intersting I bet!
The Ricemellow tastes just like I remember marshmallow cream tasting…though maybe not as fakey/fluffy (if that makes sense…).
Please tell me there is NOT actually a Snookie costume! Could there be a worse role model for young girls?! Ugh.
On a positive note, the s’mores pie looks absolutely amazing! Will have to make it this fall.
Even though I didn’t attend (and I know that you weren’t able to either)…I had to put something up about HLS and how blogging has changed me for the better.
It’s my post today: http://secondchancehappiness.blogspot.com/2010/08/blogging-for-better.html.
So, thank you for all that you do!
Thanks Brandy, I’ll check it out!
you should all go as cupcake fairies!
including pea daddy.
OMG…hilarious and yummy all at the same time (as usual). We’re thinking about halloween costumes over here too, but thankfully my boys aren’t into tutu’s (let’s keep it that way!).
I’ve been dreaming of smores all summer, this might need to meet my kitchen soon.
Haha….my cat once woke me up by throwing up ON MY HEAD. Why do we own them?
This looks awesome– I’m a s’mores lover, but I never have them outside of camping!
Totally with you on the cat puking and waking you up in the wee hours of the morning. Not fun.
That pie looks amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. I really am excited that you have a cookbook coming out!
Mmmmn, ‘smores (in any form) can never be wrong! My grandma gave me the identical (except nonvegan) recipe and I make it for every possible event so I’d love to try my hand at your version soon!
God I loved my cat more than you can even imagine, may she rest in peace. However I have to say that I do not miss cat puke or cleaning the litter box at all.
Also, nice pie! Well you know what I mean.
It’s very creative and I love the idea of baking with the silken tofu.
Hahaha omigosh I remember ordering those Halloween costumes out of a magazine. Too funny.
It has been like Christmas since that thing arrived mid-week. Gigi’s toting it around like her Bible!
Hooray Halloween!!!! One of my favorite holidays (second only to my birthday)! Last year my hubby and I were Frankenstein and the Bride of Frankenstein (his idea actually). However, I cannot stand the costumes that are marketed for young girls lately. I remember when being a witch was considered scandalous, now they get to be “Sassy Rockstars” aka mini-Britney/Miley/Gaga’s. Ew!
S’mores pie might be just the trick (or treat) needed to cap off tonight’s meal with the in-laws. Love it!
I love how you bring such personality to your cat. And S’more pie will be on my check list for tomorrow:)
I die…this looks incredible! I was just saying how I was craving S’mores, so this is perfect! Thanks for the recipe Mama Pea.
And why is it that cats tend to puke in the middle of the night! Every. Time!!
holy cow, count me in for s’mores pie! this sounds crazy good. i hate Halloween and costumes for kids…they’re always so weird!
I absolutely love how you weave healthy living with daily living in your blog. Sometimes I feel like I might have to make a choice between the two when really they SHOULD be woven together.
What a great idea for a pie! Your blogging style is simply brilliant. I love every word and every picture.
Thank you, Dorry!
Please tell me that 8 year old isn’t supposed to be “sexy,” because that red lipstick and come-hither look is leading me to believe she is.
Mmm, that S’mores pie looks absolutely delicious. I just want to say that I am a long time reader, but a seldom commenter so when I clicked over I was so surprised by your new design. It is so cute, I love it!!!
I’m glad you like it! It was a lot of work and a little heartache, but overall I’m pretty pleased too! (the format, not the pie…that was easy!)
Omigoodness, I MUST make this to prove to my b/f that vegan food is not terrible!
Looks ah-ma-zing!
Wow, that pie is pretty impressive. I’ve been thinking of what I could do with these jumbo marshmallows my mom brought back from the midwest. I don’t eat them often anymore bc of the list of ingredients, but I’ve got them so I ought to use them!
Pea kitty looks just like my cat Tiger when I was a kid. Doesn’t everyone have a cat named Tiger when they’re little
You pie looks divine! And simple! My kinda baking
This post was made for me. My cat’s name is S’mores. Obviously, I love all things S’mores. The food and my kitty, who has only thrown up in the car, which was not a very fun experience….
I was actually just complaining to my boyfriend about how I don’t get to enjoy anything “s’more-ish” anymore. Ha! This is perfect!
OMG, I can’t wait to make this pie! I love S’mores and it’s one of the things I’ve missed since going vegan, even though I know you can easily make them that way. I can’t wait until I get assigned dessert next for our girl’s night potluck!
If I sleep in the living room, my bunny is guaranteed to start running back and forth across the top of the couch some time between 4:30 & 5:30am to let me know she is hungry. It’s lovely.
I’m going to go ahead and admit that when I was reading your description about how to make the pie I sort of giggled when you said it should be loose…yeah, I need a nap.
Yeah, I almost through in another Snookie joke with that pie description, but I held back. More importantly, you have a bunny?!?
Oh yes, and she eats walls…can Pea Kitty beat that?
Yes. Our beautiful white oak staircase banister now has a “textured” effect. Grr….
First of all, that pie looks amazing. I am definitely adding the ingredients to my grocery list this week. I have been craving s’mores but apartment living doesn’t easily lend itself to roasting marshmellows–great idea with the boiler!
While I don’t have any children of my own yet, THANK YOU for not buying into the whole hootchification (its the only made-up word that does it justice) of little girl’s halloween costumes. Last year when I was looking for myself, I saw costumes labeled “sexy nurse” or “sassy cat” for young girls….I don’t even think I would be comfortable in those! I was an M&M instead!
I agree, it’s ridiculous. This costume magazine is appalling. I didn’t even show you the BAD ones.
Bah haha, you love Pea Kitty, just admit it! Wow that pie looks amazing…S’Mores pie just made it to my list of things to make this weekend!
No, really, I don’t. I love my couch that is now shredded. I love my duvet cover that she tore a hole in. I love my white pants that are impossible to find between a serious camouflage of cat hair. I do NOT love Pea Kitty.
Love Smore Pie! We just tried it a few weeks ago!
Your recipes never cease to amaze me!! Are you able to find vegan marshmallow creme at a regular grocery store?
I’m counting down to the day your book is released – everyone better watch out…I will be fighting the crowds to be first in line!!
p.s. I think pea kitty is just jealous and wants s’more action!
can i just say that everytime i read your posts (haha aka everyday) i’m so jealous that you’re the mom and get to decide that you want to turn the stove on.
i’m friggn 24 years old and since i live at home still my ma’s “no stove during the summer” rule is starting to really suck haha.
reasons why i love fall: football season & stove usage.
Dear God you were hit with a hot poker on your neck and survived? Do you know how badass that makes you?
I won’t ask for deets but glad you are ok!
The pie looks incredible. I would love a piece right now actually!
That’s my leg. Hmm…maybe I have such slender, shapely legs you thought it was my neck? And yes. I’m badass. I attribute the title to the ruptured disc and epidural free childbirth. Those make a hot poker look like child’s play.
Yay for s’mores but boo for halloween! I can never think up good costume ideas. After tara lipinski won the olympics i was an ice skater for halloween for the next three years! My costume? A pair of ice skates!!! Creative i know:) At least its better then dressing up like snookie!!! I grew up in jersey and NO ONE acts like that and i hate shows like that cause thats what makes jersey have a bad name:(
Smores pie! YUM yes please!! Looks great!!!!
Oh, yum! You come up with the most bestest recipes!
Um, are you looking for Halloweeen costumes already? I haven’t even thought about it yet!!
i was just wondering when i saw this pop up on the top of your blog. how come u have an activia add, when your vegan? just curious:)
ps. love the s’mores recipe! i just made campfire s’mores couple weekends ago and they were SO good! haha
your girls are so stinkin cute! doesn’t gigi start school soon? i live in az and it seems like ALL the kids are back at it…
Foodbuzz sets the ads. My girls do eat regular yogurt from time to time, though. Oh, and our school starts late, mid September.
i c!
its nice they can enjoy a little more summer!!
I. Love. Your. Blog.
That s’mores thing looks unbelievably delish. Amazing!
And I had to giggle a little because my girlie got her Halloween costume today too! She’s gonna be a Berry Fairy. Seriously. It’s too cute for words.
My Alyssa loves all your Gigi and Lulu pics. Whenever I’m reading your blog she’s like, “Oh! There’s Gigi and Lulu!”
Thanks for your wittiness, your inspiration and your wonderful blog.
This pie looks so delicious! Thank you for posting! Nothing is more exciting than a delicious vegan dessert recipe. Also, the pictures of your girls are too precious for words.
Ah, the early morning sounds of cats yakking up hairballs. I always cringe when I hear it. But then remember that I am never the first person up, so I don’t have to clean it.
The s’mores pie looks amazing.
I think fall is s’more season. Maybe because it’s just cool enough to want a campfire. It’s not fall yet but I’m seeing s’more related stuff everywhere! Must have some!
