Totally Quoteable

The day was totally quotable.

During the morning workout:

Gigi: “You want your abs to burn like a fire!” She’s right.  Someone should card her for that six pack.

When I discovered that someone had unfurled an entire roll of toilet paper and asked who did it:

Lulu: “I did it!  But the lady comes to clean our house…” Oooh, why I oughta….

After I asked Gigi why she had the DVD player remote outside:

Gigi: “Mother!  I have some very important calls to make.” I hope she’s calling someone to come put the toilet paper back on the roll.

After putting on our swimsuits to play in the pool:

Lulu: “But someone torn my swimsuit in two!” You can see her training with Gigi is paying off.

When I asked the girls what we should have for a snack:

Gigi: “Let’s make granilla!” Granilla it is.

Multigrain Pomegranate Granilla

  • 2 1/2 c. mulitgrain hot cereal (rye, barley, oats, wheat) or rolled oats
  • 1/2 c. chopped almonds
  • 2 t. cinnamon
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1/3 c. dried pomegranate seeds (can sub cranberries, raisins or dried fruit of your choice)
  • 1/3 c. apple juice
  • 1/3 c. maple syrup
  • 1/4 c. organic brown sugar
  • 1 t. vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  In a large bowl combine cereal, almonds, cinnamon, salt and pomegranate seeds.

In a liquid measuring cup, combine apple juice, syrup, brown sugar and vanilla and stir until sugar has dissolved.

Pour wet ingredients over the cereal mixture and stir until combined.

Spread granola on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Bake for 25 minutes, stirring every ten minutes.

We ate our granola in parfaits, layered with vanilla soy yogurt and strawberries.

“Yum!”

And then last night after the girls went to bed:

Pea Daddy: “Want to watch Hot Tub Time Machine?”

Some things are better left unsaid.  And unwatched.  Pea Daddy is banned from picking movies for at least a month.  You can quote me on that.

  1. I use that oatmeal also, your snack idea is a good one.

  2. Can’t beat the price of Country Choice at Trader Joe’s (for organic oats) — especially with the $1.00 off coupon that they circulate pretty frequently (in Mambo Sprouts booklets and online). Picked up that whole canister at TJ’s for $1.99 a few times that way. :)

  3. Ooh I like that you didn’t use oil on the granola! Looks delicious.
But Hot Tub Time Machine on the otherhand….the trailer for that was anything other than delicious ;) Just ban Pea Daddy from choosing movies from now on I think…

  4. sweetersalt says:

yum! i just made a batch of my peanut butter banana granola – i’ve been craving it lately. soo good.

  5. Carbzilla says:

What a potstirrer that Lulu is bringing up the cleaning lady again!

Thanks for the heads up on HTTM. I’ve been tempted, but now I won’t be.

  6. I must keep my husband away from Hot Tub Time Machine…

  7. oooooooh granilla sounds awesome! ;) i love the dried pomegranate seed idea…do you know if they sell those at whole foods as well?

I haven’t seen them there, but that doesn’t mean they don’t sell ‘em!

  8. it’s just a fact…your daughters are the cutest! kids say the darnest things ; )

  9. Jennifer B. says:

Hilarious and sad! Hilarious because my daughter calls it granilla, too…and sad because I am SIX HOURS from the nearest Trader Joe’s!

  10. “Burn like fire”, OMG. Can I babysit, please?

That granilla looks delicious! I never even knew they made dried pomegranate seeds. I must find them.

I was really hoping Hot Tub Time Machine was good!! Actually, I will probably love it haha. I have no shame.

  11. Mmmmmmm your batch of nola looks so good! I’m going to try and find some soy yogurt today to enjoy with my batch I’ll be making this afternoon. I can never seem to find any plain soy yogurt here in Vancouver. I’ll be checking out whole foods… fingers crossed.

  12. We love home made granola in this house! Great recipe MP :D Any other recipe I’ve seen has oil… I like that yours doesn’t and looks SO good!

My MIL (for some crazy reason) went to see HTTM in the theater… she refused to comment. lol

  13. I was hoping you would post this recipe. My mom is begging me to find her a good granola recipe, and I knew you were going to post one soon. Thank you so much :)

  14. Haha, though I love some of the actors in that movie, it does look beyond atrocious.

I can’t get over how cute your girls are. Also, having spent my fair share of time tending to little ones…I’ve noticed they have a universal tendency to unravel toilet paper rolls.

That granola looks delicious, especially when incorporated into that parfait. Thank you for sharing the recipe!

  15. hahah oh man, I still haven’t seen that movie– my husband has been trying to get us to see it and it hasn’t happened yet! your granilla looks awesome :P you’re kids are super cute!

  16. BroccoliHut says:

Dried pomegranate seeds?? Oh how I pine for Trader Joe. Regardless, I love this recipe, almost as much I as loved reading through these quotes. My sisters need to hurry up and have kids already.

  17. Wendy says:

Oh my gosh, SO funny!!! Ahh, the joys of sassy little girlies! Thanks for the giggles….and the granilla recipe!

  18. Tina says:

I love the things kids come up with! They are so creative, but don’t even realize it.

My husband tried to convince me to watch that movie awhile ago. I’m glad I didn’t give in.

  19. I have a feeling life becomes a lot more quoteable after having kids :-)

  20. Sarah U. says:

You lost me at preheat oven ;) It’s hotter than hades here in the great lakes area. No ovens. Looks good tho and I love pomegranates. Might have to try this one once the heat miser goes away.

  21. homecookedem says:

Haha!! Your girls are hilarious… wonder where they get their sense of humor??!! ;)

  22. I had no idea pomegranate seeds came dried. I’ll have to look for those :) The granola looked yummy and *normal*. I’ve been looking at the stores and recipes for granola and sometimes there are some very odd ingredients. Or a combination of odd ingredients. I can’t wait to try yours! I think I’ll do that later tonight! I always have dried cranberries on hand, so that works for me! :)

  23. I just made your Cherry Almond Granola today! So. yummy. Love the swimsuit quote…and her adorable little tummy! :)

  24. I love granola but there is no way my oven is coming on until at least september or we move to Siberia.

But how was hot tub time machine?

  25. I lol’d so hard at the Hot Tub Time machine part. Bet you wished you could get that chunk of your life back :-D

  26. It’s absolutely awesome that your kids actually WANT “granilla.” What a great mom you are! lol.

And, yes, hot tub time machine looks silly. :p

  27. Lisa says:

LOVE that granola! I must make another batch soon! I am almost out! :)

  28. Lauren says:

Haha your girls are well on their way to their first workout dvd! :)

Oh no, my guy is banned from picking out movies too. We almost got divorced over Netflix. LoL. We are no longer to even say the word in our home. ;)

  29. janetha says:

Pretty sure geej should be a personal trainer. Then you could use the extra income to take care of that toilet paper issue….

    Xoxo

  30. Alison says:

Just wanted to let you know that I made your chocolate and cherry cookies. They were wonderful!

Also a question: I am just about done with my Vanilla Spirutein container. I really like it but I’m debating whether to try a different brand. Have you tried Trader Joe’s protein powders?

  31. Dorry says:

They are so stinking cute. Love your granola recipe. One of my fave store bought it Nature’s Path Pomegranate Plus so I’m pretty sure I’d love this, too!

  32. Carla says:

Love those girls as always! And my bf made me see that movie IN THE THEATER. A couple weeks after that I was subjected to COP-OUT. Needless to say, his butt was in that chair when SATC 2 came out!

  33. I had a feeling you wouldn’t like that movie. Don’t worry–I thought it was pretty stupid, too.

  34. Love the part about the unrolled toilet paper, too cute! My BF and I argue about picking movies, we tend to switch off nights. We also seem to switch off in who picks good movies and bad ones :)

  35. haha good job on refusing the movie picks if they’re going to be like that one! It got horrid reviews and I don’t know of a single person who liked it.

  36. I totally LOVE that this recipe pretty much just requires 1 measuring cup and 1 cookie sheet. Amen for not dragging out 17 kettles, spatulas, and power appliances. I mean, sometimes I just LOVE the easy ones. Not sometimes, ALL The time. I swear anything more than a bowl and a spoon, i really have to think about it lately :) Juicer…do you ever do that anymore ? I don’t! The juice pulp cleanup crew that I wish I had…well, since I dont, and i hate cleanup, I dont juice! Such a bad, bad girl, I know.

  37. Katheryn says:

Funny quotes! The granola looks yummy. Thanks!

  38. Michelle says:

I endured Hot Tub on Saturday night. We also watch Cop Out, (cause we are classy like that)…which made Hot Tub look Oscar Worthy. Cinematic turds at their finest that night!

  39. Funny post!
    That “granilla” looks fabulous.

  40. Sarah says:

Oh my gosh — MY husband has been angling to watch that movie for awhile, too! At first I thought he was joking…

You know, I love pom juice, but hate the actual fruit. The seeds just seem funky and slimy… I can’t do it! Does it change the consistency to bake them?

  41. I love making homemade granola, and I love the sound of this recipe. I saw pom seeds at the store the other day, and thought to myself, “what would I do with these?”

And then here they are on your website, being put to such great use. Yum!

  42. Brittany says:

Yes. and Lets just say same to my husband ; ) That movie was one that I could have been better off not watching! I love when kids say funny things it some how always brightens my day!!!! Happy Thursday!

  43. Your kids are so freakin’ cute, all three of you make me crack up.

I know you have the blog, which is sorta a keepsake in and of itself, but definitely write down these (and all) quotes in a notebook! My mom did that for me and my sisters growing up and it’s priceless. We often look back and laugh hysterically at all the crazy things we used to say. :)

  44. I want granilla AND abs that burn like fire!

Also, the husband said to me a few weeks ago – “Why don’t we ever get any good movies? Like Hot Tub Time Machine”? Apparently the Indie hits I had been picking out weren’t all he hoped for.

Oh John Cusack, how could you?

  45. Marianne says:

    Mmm, granilla.

I was about to ask where on earth one gets dried pom seeds…then I saw the Trader Joe’s bag. Damnit! When is TJ’s gonna get their act together and move up into the Great White North?
