A Little Appreciation

I love our backyard.

It started out as a rocky, overgrown field that was a home to a huge cherry tree and a few moles.  Unfortunately, there were no survivors.

Pea Daddy worked hard over the last six years of our lives to turn it into a sanctuary.  I really should tell him I appreciate it more often.  It’s so easy to complain about the way he folds towels.  It’s so hard to say thank you.

Thank you for the flowers.

Thank you for the apples.

Thank you for the pond (even if I complain constantly about power cords, sealant and the your inexplicable need to rearrange the rocks).

Thank you for the strawberries.

Thank you for the tomatoes (even if you couldn’t pay me to eat one).

Thank you for the pear tree.

I know someone else who thanks you too.  It might be a partridge.

Okay, it’s just a robin.

Or four.

Life is a miracle.

Thank you for giving me the two best “Simon Says” players in the whole world.

Even if it is exhausting.

At least we have snacks.

Thanks to you.

  1. What an adorable, sweet and touching post. You have a beautiful home and family, Mama Pea. Thank you for letting us share in all the fun and beauty!

  2. You’re telling me you don’t like tomatoes!?

And Thanks to you for continuing to write your blog :)

  6. So sweet! That’s a lot to be thankful for and could certainly make many women happy. You’re one lucky mama!

  7. Why no love for the tomatoes?

    I know, I know. I don’t like raw tomatoes!

  8. veganlisa says:

Looks like you might need to hire a gardener with all that bounty. I’m available ;)

    xo

  9. Beautiful! Can Pea Daddy come do my backyard?

  10. Kimberly says:

Wow! What a transformation of your yard! Pea daddy did a great job. It is so easy to take our hubby’s for granted. This was a really sweet post :)

  11. Katheryn says:

  15. sweetersalt says:

Love your garden! My fiancee and I are working on buying a house with a backyard and I just can’t wait to plant my own little fruit / veggie garden! Until then, I’ll keep growing my cukes, tomatoes and herbs in pots – but the ground seems so much more fun!

  16. Anne says:

Awww, what a sweet post! Thank YOU for sharing all of the lovliness with us :)

  17. Sarah says:

Your backyard is absolutely beautiful! Can I hire Pea Daddy to redo our backyard and teach my hubby some outdoor skills?
I’m having the same trouble with my backyard now — it’s a bit overgrown and overwhelming — don’t know where to start! You’ve inspired me :)

  18. homecookedem says:

What a gorgeous backyard!! I’m sure Pea Daddy appreciates your thankfulness. What a good guy!!

  19. Krystina says:

    Your backyard is gorgeous!

  20. Awww your backyard looks amazing! I’m loving the garden. You’re a lucky woman, Mama Pea :)

  21. tanya says:

To know what you have is what makes one happy.

  22. Janelle says:

I am extremely jealous of your pears, strawberries, and apples. The fruits of our labor in our garden only consist of green beans, tomatoes, and kale, which although yummy, certainly are no home-grown pear. Oh, and a crab apple tree…Way to go, Pea Daddy!

  23. life is a miracle indeed :) what a gorgeous yard!

p.s. i hate raw tomatoes too. bleh.

  24. Ramya says:

awww i really hope when i’m married i have two little princesses too!

my mom has an organic vegetable garden…. her cherry and grape tomatoes are soooo gorgeous but she has been guilting me into eating them. it is so incredibly hard to get raw tomatoes down my throat…. so after seeing me struggle to choke them down, she gave up. =)

  25. Oh my goodness– your backyard looks like such a sanctuary!! I’m very envious– we have no backyard to speak of right now. :-( Some day!

  26. Monica J says:

wonderful post! you’re right, sometimes it is easier to ask “why didn’t you..” than it is to say “thank you for…” . thanks for blogging, i always enjoy what you share.

..oh, and i’m soooo jealous of your pears, strawberries, and ‘maters! that would be wonderful to have.

  27. Nicole says:

When we first moved from SE Portland to the suburbs, the end of our street looked very reminiscent of your backyard-the early years. We were right on the urban boundary back then so it was all field and farmland. Now, there are houses and condos as far as the eye can see. So sad :(

  28. Kelly says:

    Your back yard looks fantastic!

I am thankful for your brilliant posts in my Google Reader every morning. They make me at least crack a smile….most of the time its more like a full on laugh :)

  29. Heidi says:

Pea Daddy + Mama Pea + 2 Little Peas = Green Thumbs Pea Family!

What an awesome backyard. I envy your ability to grown things. I hope that our next place has the space and sunlight. Until then, I will just have to envy your fresh goodies!

  30. Aw what a sweet post. I am incredibly jealous of your backyard. My husband and I are living in an apartment for a year and I miss having a pretty backyard!

  31. Dorry says:

Love your backyard. We planted a garden early in the springtime and we’ve been watching things grow. I tasted a cucumber and it was terrible. HA. Our flowers are pretty though!

  32. This is so touching! I posted yesterday about the 1 plant I currently have growing, it’s inside and it’s a stevia plant. Priorities, ya know :) but that if we ever aren’t going to be urban dwellers, a yard & garden would be fabulous. I admit though, between the local CSAs and farmers markets, I am totally spoiled in So Cal and so I would have to be ok with a yield of 3 strawberries all season from my plants (which is what happened 2 yrs ago when I tried “Gardening”)..ha!

  33. I am so happy to read that you don’t like tomatoes, either! I despise raw tomatoes and everyone always thinks I’m nuts when I tell them. I knew you had good taste ;)

Sweet post, lovely backyard. I hope we can have a backyard like that one day :) For now, it’s a cement patio with a few potted plants, but we’re getting there!

  34. pea daddy is a beast at gardening!! wow!

  35. your backyard is GEORGOUS!! and so much fresh produce! that must be so cool to just go in the back and pick pear off the tree :)

  36. Maryea says:

You have an amazingly beautiful back yard! Thank you for sharing.

  37. You have such a beautiful yard. Oregon can grow such beautiful plants.

  38. Gena says:

I could not possibly love that photo of you and Pea Daddy any more.

  39. Rachael says:

Beautiful back yard – I love that it provides play space, rest space and food for all sorts of critters! Sanctuary is a word that I like to apply to my backyard and garden too, though the clucking chickens sometimes disrupt the quest for inner peace :)

  40. Your Chris can’t fold towels either? How hard is it to fold in thirds and not halves? I mean, obviously, that big square of cotton is not going to fit in the linen closet. Sigh.
Thank you Pea Daddy for making Pea Mommy happy :) Your backyard is gorgeous – I think that every time you post a picture of it.

You must come down and visit our backyard soon. We can have a towel folding clinic. (I’d be happy with halves…I just want the corners to line up so we don’t have this mishmash wad of terry cloth falling out of the cupboard on top of me).

  41. Holly says:

Your background is beautiful!! I love all of the frest veggies & fruits.
& that fountain- so pretty looking!!

  42. Kristina says:

oh I LOVE the bird in the nest… so sweet peeking over! :)

Pea Daddy has made your yard BEAUTIFUL.

  43. I hate tomatoes too…but I absolutely love everything about this post. You rock Mama Pea!

  44. Look how cute you are with your long hair! I’ve always wanted the classic back yard with the freshly mowed grass and cute baby birdies. Instead I got a forest with bears and mountain lions. Needless to say there was not a whole lot of play time out back :p

  45. Beautiful backyard!!

    And thank you!

  46. This is too cute!!! I love the picture of you and Pea Daddy. Your backyard looks awesome and beautiful, good job Pea Daddy!! :)

  47. Eleanor says:

What a lovely post; really moving.
Thank you for sharing it (and your brilliant recipes…!)

    Eleanor

  48. Barbara says:

Beautiful! It’s so important to show the people in our lives that we appreciate them! I hope Pea Daddy liked this! Have you considered maybe letting us know how you deal with arguments etc- what makes a good relationship work? Advice of sorts…
    Barbara

  49. SOOOOOOO cute! I love this post. You and Pea Daddy and the whole Pea Family are so cute. I can’t wait to have a backyard like that someday, if I could only be so lucky.

    XO,
    Erin
