Old, New, Borrowed, Blue
I truly can’t remember if on my wedding day I had “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…” This post has a bit of everything to make up for it. It also is a good opportunity to congratulate both Janetha and Kalin on their nuptials this past weekend. Love you, girls!
I’m not exactly traditional, so I’m going to start with the borrowed.
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and as a result, the girls have been obsessed lately with borrowing my old t-shirts to wear to bed.

Pea Daddy and I think it is hilarious.

That Mariners t-shirt is almost as huge and hideous on me as it is on Lulu.
How about something new? I like the new method Gigi invoked to carry her dirty underwear upstairs.

Remind me to wash my t-shirt before I wear it again, okay? Thanks.
After we had clean panties and appropriately sized shirts on, we set out on our outing for the day, which happens to incorporate the blue.

The girls were excited beyond even my belief to pick berries, to a point where we needed to carry our panties upstairs on a stick pony.

Gigi had promised a 3 blueberry to the mouth : 14 berry to the bucket ratio. Um, yeah…that didn’t happen.

Surprisingly, Lulu was extremely meticulous with her blueberry selection. I laughed to myself as I saw her analyze each berry she picked and said, “Nah, too red,” and tossed it to the ground.

“Ew…it’s green,” she announced and casted it aside. And of course, Gigi retrieved it and ate it. We can’t waste food, people!

I warned Gigi, “You’ll get a tummy ache!” Gigi, in perfect timing, as always, replied “Too late!” In spite of our consumption and meticulousness, we managed to get two pounds of berries for $1.60!

I love the trust of the self-serve money box.

I caught Gigi trying to pick the lock, siphoning the funds to buy me new t-shirts, I’m sure.
After our outing, we had some old, dear friends over for dinner tonight,

so I served some old favorites up. White bean guacamole and chips.

Salad.

Falafel turned veggie burgers.

And something entirely new and blue ( plus, delicious and so incredibly simple) for dessert.

Blueberry Crisp
- 3 1/2 c. fresh blueberries, cleaned and dried
- 2 T. organic brown sugar
- 1/2 t. cinnamon
- 1/2 c. oats
- 2 T. whole wheat pastry flour
- 1/4 c. almonds
- 1/4 c. organic brown sugar
- 1/4 t. salt
- 2 T. vegan margarine (i.e. Earth Balance)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Put berries in a small casserole dish or an 8×8 baking pan.
Sprinkle with two tablespoons of brown sugar and cinnamon, and mix well.

In a high-speed blender or food processor, combine oats, flour, almonds, remaining brown sugar, salt and vegan margarine. Pulse until well combined, but still textured.
Sprinkle topping on top of blueberries.

Bake for 35 minutes.

We served ours up with an old favorite: banana soft serve.

Heavenly.
Our evening ended with something entirely new: three ballerinas washing an old garden cart.

Feel free to borrow this activity for your next party. It’s a crowd pleaser.
And now, to announce the new winner of my old giveaway, Snubbr.com has picked Jennifer B. to win the cookbook of her choice.
Thanks to my rogue dietician best friend I have found this blog! I am now following on facebook, too.
Our family is venturing out into the unknown as we attempt to discover the cause behind our daughter’s distended belly and general gastrointestinal distress.
Jennifer B., please email your mailing information to me at peasandthankyou@hotmail.com and I will make certain you get your book as soon as possible. Congrats!
And now I just may try something new…going to bed before midnight. If that makes me old, so be it.

The blueberry picking adventure reminds me of the book Blueberries for Sal! I don’t actually remember what happens in the book but I’m sure her picking skills don’t even come close to that of Gigi and Lulu
What a great deal on the berries too.
All of those blueberries for $1.60? That’s tremendous value!!
I doubt I looked that good though
I love this post, so cute! I used to steal my mum’s t-shirts to wear when I was little too
What is this going to bed before midnight thing of which you speak? I don’t quite understand how that works – as evidenced by my commenting at 12:13 am PST.
And now I want to go pick berries. At 12:13 am. Wonder if the farms are open.
I just wanted to tell you how much i enjoy reading your blog, your style of writing and i think you are so blessed to have such lovely, adorable girls! they really crack me up with their little antics! (((: thank you again for brightening my day! (:
Oooy, if going to be before midnight makes you old … I’m as old as can be.
The panites on a stick is hilarious!!
I NEVER last until midnight–I am 40 after all
While I was driving around for work yesterday, I saw a sign that said “Pick Your Own Blueberries” and I was incredibly tempted to stop! Too bad it would have been unethical to spend a few hours picking berries on company time, because it definitely looks like a blast!
And that crisp is an excellent way to put those fresh berries to use!
Oops–that was supposed to be’panties’–HATE typos!!!
80 cents?!?!? I might save money driving out to your area and picking them there instead of buying Michigan berries at the farmers market here!
This was such a sweet post. Maybe because it reminds me of my own berry-picking fanatic. But I think it’s also because you seem to capture the essence of kids’ summers so well all the time. (Speaking of which, I made the Double Chocolate-Single Chin brownies again last night, and even my vegan-phobic mother loved them. They rock!)
I want to go pick blueberries so badly! I need to find a place to do that. I was surprised at how well my youngest picked strawberries. He examined every single one. The oldest was clueless! The crumble looks delicious and I bet the banana soft serve was perfect with it! Glad you had fun with the girls!
Haha I used to wear my mom’s old t-shirts too. Your blueberry crisp looks amazing!
Cute pictures of the girls! Also, that blueberry crisp looks amazing
It certainly seems to be wedding season, that’s for sure.
And is it just me, or does LuLu look like she’s matured two years in the span of two weeks? Maybe it was just the hair (or the celebrity sunglasses), but she looks so much older!
Anyway, yum. Just beware…too many blueberries can cause certain articles of clothing to be carried upstairs on a stick pong.
I have been searching for a vegan blueberry crisp recipe. Thank you!
Hooray blueberries! Also, old t-shirts are the best! Those girls know what they are doing.
Your deserts always look so good!
we picked blueberries a few days ago too, so much fun
One of my fondest childhood memories is picking blueberries up north with my family. My breakfast from then on out was fresh MI blueberries and plain Cheerios. So good!
do your girls know how cute and 50s they look in their sunglasses? Adorable…Now I’ve got a mean craving for blueberries!
What a cool way to entertain the kids…if we had a blueberry field here I would settle Maya in for the entire day. That way we’d have fresh blueberries and she’d be exhausted by the time we got home. What could be better?
i can imagine me with a VERY upset tummy after visiting a blueberry farm! same after eating an entire batch of blueberry crisp too
But did you cross the red line????? Gosh, I hope not!
(I totally did not recognize Lulu in the first pic. My word she’s growing up fast)
I was just thinking . . . do you, personally, sample all these desserts you make? Or do you pass on the sweets?
Maybe you DO always partake, and that’s why you never get to bed before midnight? Late night workouts?
I DO always at least sample. Quality control purposes, you know? This crisp is especially healthy though, so no need for late night workouts.
ahhhh i LOVED the last post where gigi made friends with that girl – you ARE doing something right! and now lulu and her meticulous berry selection – mama taught her well.
can’t wait to chat on wednesday – hugs and love!
What a fun experience to pick blueberries! This makes me want to raise my (potential future) children somewhere other than Dallas.
Gorgeous summertime dinner spread…
LOL-your girls are so adorable. I’m 31 and my mom, sisters and I still share clothes..so be prepared.
We picked 30#’s of blueberries this weekend – sending lots of thanks for the recipe. Heading off to make it now and I can already tell it’s going to be scrumptious!
I too used to love wearing my parents’ old t-shirts to sleep in. They were so much comfier than mine!
It looks like you blueberry picking adventure was a blast – so much more fun than working in an office all day!
I love the berry picking pictures! Too cute for words. And the berries look incredibly delicious, reminding me of the fact that I need to get some more ASAP before berry season comes to a close.
One of my fondest memories with my Grandmother is venturing out to Sauvie’s Island to pick berries. It was so much fun and I couldn’t wait to dive in to them when we got home…only to find the bag crawling with spiders! I almost had a heart attack and even refused to eat the pie she made because I was convinced she didn’t capture all of those little buggers!
I used to wear my dad’s old t-shirts – they were enormous on me! There’s something comforting about wearing a parent’s shirts to sleep in.
How fun to go blueberry picking, and so cheap!! Your blueberry crisp looks amazing!!
This post brough my so many great memories! My mom would always take me berry picking in the summer and I loved it!
Can’t wait to try the crisp recipe! Was that farm near Portland? We live on the west side and I’ve been looking for a place to take my daughter to pick berries soon.
Wow, great deal on blueberries! I used to do the same thing when my Mom took me to pick berries as a kid…. give myself a stomach ache
I so enjoy your website and your daily happenings with your girls. I read about ‘Jennifer’ who won your cookbook give-away and her daughter’s distended belly. My son had the same tummy and digestive issues. We altered his diet to vegan at the age of 2. At the age of 11 he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (because of the discovery of sinus polyps). I firmly believe that following a strict diet kept him healthy and out of the doctor’s offices. He is now 23, a college senior, and doing well. I am always happy to share our insight and what worked for him with others struggling with this disease. Thanks for showing people the funny side of raising kids and great recipes!
Thanks Mary Ann. When Jennifer emails me about her prize, I’ll make sure to alert her to your comment and suggestions! Thank you so much for sharing.
Both of your girls look adorable in your t-shirts! Too cute. I used to love going berry picking when I was younger (I unfortunately haven’t been for a while), and eating them whilst picking was one of the greatest parts. That crisp looks delicious, I can’t believe you got so many blueberries for so cheap. I wish the whole world was that trusting!
I think we are psychic with each other from cheezecake to peanut sauce and spring rolls because yesterday I posted vegan GF blueberry streusel muffins! And in the entire history of my blog, prior to yesterday, I had only ever posted ONE muffin recipe, ever. So it’s totally crazy that I come over here and see a blueberry crumble…too crazy! I have a raw vegan apple one that I use different fruits in if I dont want to fire up the ole oven, too.
Anyway, great recipe! And 80 cents?! for fresh locally grown bloobs? Wow that’s depression-era pricing…gotta love it!!
Is it bad that I am 28 and still wear my dad’s old T-shirts… for some reason they are just better!
Is it just me or does Lulu look like a splitting image of your dad in the pic where she’s wearing the yellow Mariners shirt?
$1.60 for 2 pounds of blueberries?! I don’t think I can ever get that much at the price here in Socal. I would make gallons of smoothies with them.
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you continuing to post recipes almost everyday even though you are in the process of writing a book. I have noticed that sometimes with other blog writers with a book in the works they seem to quit posting recipes I guess so they can tease you into buying their book. Thanks!
Thank you, Kim. It hasn’t always been easy, so I’m so glad it hasn’t gone unnoticed. I really want to keep you guys happy, since you are the reason I’ve been able to write a book in the first place. Thanks again
Can you believe I have never went and picked my own food before…I just go to the farmers market….haha..lazy I guess, or maybe I need to have kids. : ) Love all the pics of the girls in the big shirts…reminds of me when I was little. I love big shirts because I hated wearing shorts, haha. I cannot believe I just wrote that.
Moving on…blueberry crisp looks great!
that blueberry thing? looks amazing.
i loved to steal my mom’s tshirts when i was a kid. she had this one Hooter’s jersey that only now I understand why she thought it was so hilarious when I wore it…
I agree with Kim, #39! You have put the same level of effort into your posts (seemingly at least) as you did before, which is awesome!
I was wondering–how many servings does this blueberry crisp make?
Thanks, Sarah. It makes about 6 servings? It was gone too fast to count!
So excited! I will email you my info after I find a stick to carry my panties upstairs!
L has been wearing my old shirts to bed too! Although, these are shirts from the 90′s wearing tiny t-shirts is cool phase, so it’s actually ridiculous that I ever wore them
There is almost nothing I love more in this whole world than blueberry picking. I didn’t get to go this summer (I always go at my Grandma’s in Michigan) and I’m missing it so badly!
So happy you get to pick with the girls…I’ve heard your blueberries up there are yummy too!!!
XO,
Erin
thank you for the congrats, i love you, too! i also love catching up on the 9 posts i’ve missed. yes, you must be doing something right.. in order to be one of the few blogs i just can’t bring myself to “mark all as read” on
xoxo
