Secrets Don’t Make Friends, but Giveaways Do

I hate to keep secrets from you guys.  But how does that saying go?  “Why buy the charming, hilarious, almost finished meat-free memoir cookbook when you can have the recipes for free?” So in exchange for my relentless teasing, I have another giveaway for you.  I’m just going to make you wait for it first while looking at pictures of recipes that I can’t give you.

Yesterday we hosted a birthday barbecue for Pea Daddy with his closest friends, their wives and kids. My responsibilities included prepping food for the masses, shoving everything into the playroom or garage and shutting the door and trying to stretch Day 3 of unwashed hair into a presentable party coif.

Pea Daddy’s job was to make sure the girls didn’t completely destroy the work I did. I hesitantly ran to the store to get a few last minute ingredients and when I got home, I noticed both girls were in completely different outfits.

Then I heard the most beautiful words that Pea Daddy has ever said to me: “I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU DO IT!” You had me at, “I don’t…,” honey.

Evidently there had been two potty training incidents, a water fight and a run in with a mud puddle. It was 95 degrees out yesterday, leading me to believe the mud was of the homemade variety. Pea Daddy continued with his sweet nothings, “How do you even take a shower?  How do you blog every day? How did you write a book?!” He obviously doesn’t read the blog or else he would know that I put a minimal degree of effort into both hygiene and posts.  As for the book, lucky for me, I had a backyard full of victims to test book recipes on.

Recipes like:

Better Than Ever Black Bean Burgers

Fire-Roasted Tomato Salsa and Yogi Guacamole (with organic white corn and Food Should Taste Good multigrain chips)

and Tropical Vegan Cupcakes

along with the usual suspects.

Everything went over fabulously (4th outfit of the day…),

and a good time was had by all.

I happened to notice yesterday, though, amongst all my decluttering, dusting and useless crap hiding, that I have A LOT of cookbooks.

“A lot” a lot.

I really would say that I only have a few favorites though, the kind whose bindings are broken down and who have splashes of soy sauce, lemon juice or Lord knows what else smudged on the pages.  Some of my favorites are:

Eat, Drink & Be Vegan

by Dreena Burton

This was my first vegan cookbook, and you know what they say about your first (?).  I haven’t made anything out of it that wasn’t delicious.  I think everyone, vegan or not, should have a copy on their bookshelf (or baker’s rack…or kitchen counter…or nightstand).  My favorite recipes from ED&BV are probably the “Chocolate in My Peanut Butter Cookies,” the “Sesame Tahini Dressing” and the “Sweet Potato Lentil Chili,” but really there are too many great recipes to pick favorites.

The Vegetarian Family Cookbook

by Nava Atlas

I love this book as a resource for nutrition, for kid-friendly ideas and as a great basic starting point for eating veg.  All of the recipes have vegan options, so it’s really flexible and thus totally Pea family friendly.  I’ve enjoyed the very adaptable “Basic Muffins, Seven Ways” and the “Eggless Tofu Quiche.”  I need to venture into this book even more, though…in my free time.

Eating for Pregnancy

by Rose Ann Hudson and Catherine Jones

Though this is not a vegetarian cookbook and I’m not pregnant (nor do I intend to “try for a boy,” so don’t go there…), this is definitely one of the best cookbooks I’ve ever bought.  Even though it is full of meat and dairy-based recipes, there is a special section for vegetarian pregnancies with several dozen vegetarian recipes.  I used this book before I got pregnant, during my pregnancies and even now for it’s balanced approached to nutrition.  Though there is no nutritional information for each recipe, because calorie counts aren’t really a concern for healthy babies and healthy families, there are little notes about “What’s in this for baby? What’s in this for me?” My favorite recipes pre-veg (and a few post) are the “Whole Wheat Popovers,” “Vegetarian Pad Thai” and “Southern Style Sweet Potato Casserole.”  Overall, it’s just a very balanced and nutritious approached to eating and really gets rid of that  diet mentality when venturing into motherhood.

Eating for Life

by Bill Phillips

Even though there may not be a single vegetarian or vegan recipe in this book, I couldn’t talk about my most-utilized cookbooks without mentioning it.  Eating for Life goes hand-in-hand with the Body for Life program, but you certainly can do one without the other.  There are great ideas for balanced breakfasts, lunches, dinners and desserts, and prior to going veg, I cooked out of this book constantly for it’s great ingredients, high protein meals and easy, easy recipes.  Even now, I’m constantly adapting my favorites, like “Golden Pancakes” (an oatmeal, cottage cheese and egg white protein pancake), “BBQ Chicken Pita Pizzas” (which can be transformed with chickpeas), and “Mom’s Green Enchiladas” (which I makeover with lentils).  There are dozens of great protein shake and protein pudding ideas too.  It’s fantastic.

Would  you like to win a free copy of one of my favorites?  Or is there another cookbook that you are dying to add to that place on your kitchen counter between your toaster, its grimy leftover crumbs and your cutting board?  (Pssst…you don’t get extra entries for saying Peas and Thank You: Healthy Family Meals in a Snap).

Snubbr.com is going to give one Peas and Thank You reader a brand new cookbook of his or her choice! (under $33, please, so no requests for a signed 1907 first edition Guide to Modern Cookery at $5,124)

Here’s how to enter:

* Leave a comment telling me ANY cookbook that you’d like to own and why;

* Link back to this giveaway on your blog;

* Tweet “@Mama_Pea is giving away a cookbook here: http://bit.ly/9zidEe ” and then leave me a comment here telling me you did; and/or

* Pretend you “Like” Peas and Thank You on Facebook here, and then leave a comment here telling me that you did…and that you really do like us.

That’s it!  Good luck, the giveaway ends Sunday, July 18th at 9 p.m. PST. I can’t wait to hear about all the cookbooks you want…because, you know, if there’s one thing I don’t have enough of, it’s cookbooks.

Also, I can’t frickin’ wait for your cookbook!!

  14. Valerie says:

    The family vegetarin.

A little tip I got from a podcast: you can bring your fav cookbooks to kinkos & have it re-bound with spirals. Easily keeps your page open :o

  15. I would love to own any and all cooks by Jamie Oliver! His ideas always look fresh and wonderful.

  16. I like you on a boat, on a plane, on a train or in the rain!

(And on FB and Twitter too.)

I just saw your response above about Giada…The Boyfriend went to high school with her younger brother. One day after school the boys were at his house and she was there. She made them spaghetti. He says it was “just okay.” I told him that was because it was before she was a tv chef. I watch all of her shows and think that if I could one day have that kitchen over looking the beach in Malibu, I’d be a pretty happy girl.

I’ll miss you for the next two weeks when I’m in China again! Leaving tomorrow morning. Still trying to figure out mobile blogging. Blah.

Love those cookbook suggestions! Crazy as it is, of my 392 cookbooks, those three aren’t there! I know what someone’s adding to their Christmas list!!!

    XOXO,
    Erin

  34. Ariel says:

I’ve just been living on my own for a year and I don’t own a single cookbook! I get all my recipes on the internet and from library books. I’d love to have “Eat, Drink & Be Vegan”. I also plan to get a copy of your book when it comes out. :D

  35. Colleen says:

Like you on Facebook…and have been torn for awhile for which cookbook to get first – Veganomicon; or Eat, Drink, and be Vegan. They both look so good!

  36. Marianne says:

I need another cookbook like a need another hole in my head – and that’s saying alot for someone who has 9 piercings in her ears. But I definitely want another cookbook. Right now I’m swooning over Heidi Swanson’s Super Natural Cooking.

  53. Lauren says:

Don’t you just love when your hubby actually admits that you are superwoman! I know men are capable of so many things, but being a super-mom was just not in the cards for them. :) A valid reason why God only gave this ability to women! ;)

I love your cookbook selection. The one cookbook I’ve been wanting for awhile is the Clean Eating. I can’t stop drooling over the recipes from there.

  54. Rebecca says:

I still don’t own Eat Drink and Be Vegan yet and all of the recipes i’ve made from blogs that come from or are inspired by this book are amazing! i would love to own this book!

  58. Annalisa says:

I would love to find a true first edition of The Moosewood cookbook (which is more of a flimsy pamphlet than a book — and has some great controversy surrounding it); however, more recent books I would love would be an Every Day Food by Martha Stewart book, or the 2009 Cooking Light best recipes of the year — or something like that ;-)

it would be awesome o add it to my little collection

  74. Christine says:

I agree with you on EDBV – I cook nearly exclusively from that book. The Sweet Potato Chili is on the menu almost every week…and the Back to Basics Balsamic Vinegarette is our standard go to dressing.

The next cookbook I would like to own is Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. Every Christmas I go home to see my family and bake cookies for them. My nephews always ask for cookies the minute they see me at the house. As I am the only vegan, I usually just make regular cookies for them. (I know, I know, please don’t revoke my vegan card…) Anyways, THIS year I am going to do it differently…VEGAN cookies for all! So I would love this cookbook so I can plan what I am going to make!

I liked this post on Facebook. No tweets, sorry…don’t have an account.

    Thanks! Christine

PS I love your blog!!! Even though I’m not vegan nor vegetarian, you have helped me take a step back and make changes to eat cleaner and choose vegetarian options when I would previously choose chicken because I didn’t know about things like seitan (worst. name. ever.).

Thanks Robin! And I totally agree about seitan. I always make a conscious effort to say it like, “SAYYYYYYY-tawwwwn.”

  134. Abby says:

The vegetarian family cookbook sounds perfect!!! Obviously because I am vegetarian and my husband is openminded about it, as long as the food tastes good!

  135. Abby says:

    Tweet, tweet! :)

  136. Ramya says:

I would love to have The Joy of Vegan Baking! Nothing makes me happier than baking up animal-free treats while I should be studying! I won’t lie…. I probably won’t use the recipes, but I’ll use them as inspiration to write my own.

Just so you know, I read your blog religiously! In fact, I happen to think it’s the greatest thing I’ve accidentally stumbled upon (while feverishly trying to find inspiration for vegan baking)…. I’ve been inspired to start my own blog but I just don’t know how right now. I just graduated and I’m in the process of applying to medical schools and studying for the MCAT. I even force other people to read it when I get the chance! Peas and Thank-you is usually the highlight of my day (though I’m not sure what that implies about my life…. I promised myself I’d have a life again after this whole application process is finished).

Happy Monday! Your family is beautiful and I don’t like judging but…. I think you are an excellent mother! So much like my own. =)

Thank you so much, Ramya! Good luck with your studying. You are so ambitious to be contemplating medical school!

  137. Kim says:

I was just diagnosed with a ton of major food allergies and have now been totally vegan for three weeks. I would love your book! I have two kids and will be forcing my veganism upon them at least one meal a week!

I would love to own the Vegetarian Family Cookbook. I’ve recently come into recovering (for REAL this time) from Anorexia, and as I’m a vegetarian, my family don’t really know how to cook for me. If I was able to whip up a delightful vegetarian meal for my whole family, and eat together, I can’t explain how that would make me feel!

    Thank you!

Thanks to my rogue dietician best friend I have found this blog! I am now following on facebook, too.
Our family is venturing out into the unknown as we attempt to discover the cause behind our daughter’s distended belly and general gastrointestinal distress.

Go Dairy Free. It’s around $13 on Amazon. With a cheapy like me, TWO people could win. :o )
