I Have Something I Want to Tell You

While I do have many things I want to tell you, I am actually referring to Gigi’s new favorite phrase.

Like most of Gigi’s habits, including refusing to have even a stitch of material touching her shins or forearms at any time, or the collecting of used Band-aids in her ballerina princess jewelry box (that was a fun discovery), I have no idea where she came up with this one.  However, for every sentence Gigi spoke this weekend, she prefaced it with, “I have something I want to tell you.” Perhaps she wants us to brace ourselves for the wisdom that she is about to spew forth.  A better guess though is that she wants to make sure that she has 100% of our attention before she wastes even a single breath on our unimportant ears.

“Hey Dad, I have something I want to tell you.”

“Yes, Gigi?”

“My tooth hurts when I eat carrots.”

“Okay.”

“Hey Mom, I have something I want to tell you.”

“Yes, Gigi?”

“I’ve never seen your hair in a ponytail before.”

“Yup.”

And then every three minutes or so we would be treated to variation.

“Hey Mom, I have to ask you something.”

“What?

“Can we eat breakfast outside?

“Can we make a waterslide in our pajamas?”

“When we get home will people be lined up outside our gate to get into my pool party?”

“Can we have pink lemonade?”

“Can we have a water balloon fight with our friends?”

“Can you empty and refill our pool that’s full of dirt, grass and bladder-filtered pink lemonade?”
(Okay, I threw that last part in…)

“Can we have barbecued burgers for dinner?”

Sure thing, Chicken Wing.

Smoky Pinto Bean Burgers
Makes 6 burgers

  • 1 can organic pinto beans, drained and rinsed
  • 3 strips tempeh bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 carrot, chopped
  • 1/4 c. red onion, chopped
  • 1/4 c. old-fashioned oats
  • 1 c. cooked brown rice
  • 1 T. almond butter
  • 1 t. low-sodium soy sauce or Braggs liquid aminos
  • 1 t. vegan Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 t. liquid smoke
  • 1 t. minced garlic
  • 1 t. Dijon mustard

Combine all ingredients in a food processor until you reach a thick, yet still slightly chunky texture.

Transfer to a bowl and refrigerate for an hour or more.

Form mixture into six patties.  Heat a prepared skillet or grill pan (or a barbecue) over medium high heat.  Add patties and cook for 6-7 minutes per side.

Serve on whole grain buns and top with your favorite hamburger fixins.

We ate outside, because Gigi asked to…after she told me she had something she wanted to ask me, of course.  And because Ms. Swamp Thing wasn’t going to be sitting at my dining room table.

Pea Daddy called it the perfect summer day.  I’d have to agree.  I’d love to stick around, but Pea Daddy says he has something he wants to show me.  Hmm, maybe that’s where she gets it.

  1. Awww, sweet! You can never go wrong with water slides in your pjs and bean burgers! Perfect Summer day!

  2. Aww, such a cute post!

Hilarious last line. Hahaha. Good luck, Pea Daddy. ;-)

  3. Skylar uses Gigi’s phrase. And also uses, ” Hi, Mommy.” Like 100 times per day. Not kidding. Hi, Skylar. Omg.

Saw your comment on Gena’s post. I agree with everything you said!

  4. Kids are just too funny. This does sound like the perfect summer day, love those burgers! I had pinto bean burgers the other day and they were amazing.

  5. Lisa says:

oh my – how good do these burgers look!
    And your photos…..>AWESOME!!!

  6. neiry mae says:

ahahaha, i love how there’s always something slightly inappropriate

  7. Ashley says:

Whoa. Those look insanely delicious! Love the first photo of Gigi!! I love the things kids come up with. Hope you guys had a great weekend and that you’re feeling better!!

  8. Awh sweet post!!
The burgers look amaze – but what on earth is liquid smoke!!?

You can find it on the condiment aisle of your grocery store, by the barbecue sauces. Essentially, it’s a highly condensed liquid that gives foods, sauces, etc. a smoky flavor. According to CHOW, it is “made by collecting the smoke from burning hickory wood in a condenser and cooling it until it forms water…the droplets are captured and filtered twice, before being bottled without any additional ingredients. Colgin [the brand I use]…then ages it in oak barrels to mellow the flavors before adding vinegar, molasses, and caramel color.” A little goes a long way, and I use it in my homemade barbecue sauce too, as well as in tofu marinades sometimes.

  9. Those burgers sound awesome. I have never had a bean burger. I’m deprived.

  10. Adorable! It does look like a great summer day! And Lulu’s expressions – haha!

Mine is currently fond of: “Hey! I want to talk to you! . . . I like ponies.” If there’s no response, this continues. To everyone. Cashiers at target, guards at the gate (we live on a military post) and so on. I blame her cracklike my little pony addiction.

  11. Lauren says:

Haha aww. I love when kids say things like that. At least they haven’t entered the “why?” stage yet. I hear that’s a rough one! ;)

Glad you and your family enjoyed the perfect summer day! :)

  12. Oh to be 5… everything is such wisdom and OMG THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION EVER! Hug those cuties for me :)

  13. katie says:

I love this post, it reminds me of my summer childhood days!!! Love the sprinkler, always loved that as a child!!!

The burgers sound delish too! I need to buy a food processor! What kind do you have>

Have a great day girl! xoxo

Katie, I actually burned out my food processor (a mini-cuisinart) making banana soft serve. I just used my Vitamix set on about 3-4 variable speed setting. I’d recommend a cuisinart, but the full size version. If you are looking for something a little cheaper, maybe a Magic Bullet?

  14. Katherine says:

mama pea, I have something to tell you: I’m glad my parent never took shots of my dirty booty in the backyard. no evidence for me to destroy :) cute post!

  15. those look sooooo good. usually my burgers look like turds. :p

  16. meredith dameron says:

Regan says Guess what mommy 1000 times a day… ughhhh what Regan?? hahaha

Sounds like a prefect day except maybe the burgers?? sorry :(

so what did Pea Daddy have to show you~LOL

  17. sweetersalt says:

Ooooh yum, I love bean burgers – these look great! My fiance will be thrilled that I have a new recipe (lie). He’ll ask me where the beef and pork are, but these look like they might fool him!

  18. Ilana says:

baha. am I obsessed with you? maybe a little

my baby brother would always say, “You guys! You guys! Hold on a second!” when he wanted to talk.

  19. Ahhh, that is the perfect summer day indeed! Hey, she could be doing worse– one of my little cousins went through his cursing phase at that age (courtesy of one of his friends at day school). Although it’s always fun to have a four year-old look at his baby sister and say, “You know…she’s really pissing me off…”, I don’t think their parents were too excited. :-)

  20. Jocelyn says:

aww so cute! The slide into the little pool looks like so much fun! LOL… And the burgers look divine. Yummy!

  21. Kristina says:

bladder filtered lemonade!! :) I love your humor !

those burgers look amazing, I am going to make these, thanks for sharing!!

  22. Gena says:

Wish I could’ve spent yesterday outside with you guys, because it looks like a perfect day indeed. NYC, on the other hand, was an urban sauna!

  23. Carbzilla says:

That’s hilarious. Later can you teach her whatever vocabulary she’ll need to turn down dates with guys she’s not interested in. I would have found that helpful in high school.

When my 6 year-old nephew came to visit, he started every sentence with “Actually….” as if every sentence we uttered was incorrect and he was the authoritative expert. We let him have that.

Glad to see sun in OR!

  24. I love it, such a cute story! My nephew always starts his sentences with “Hey, wait a minute.” It’s too funny.

  25. I love bean burgers so so much! Why stick with black beans when there’s so many other beans! :) Nice BBQ burgers!

  26. Gigi is hilarious!

I can’t wait to try those veggie burgers. I have been searching for a good one and your recipes never let me down. :)

This is probably my favorite veggie burger I’ve made so far. It’s so meaty! :)

  27. Remember when you were little and you’d hear something that sounded cool and you couldn’t wait to get the chance to repeat it?

I will never forget being about 7, and going up to my mom in the backyard while she was peacefully gardening and saying…

“What the hell are you planting?”

I learned that my new phrase was not as cool as it sounded pretty quickly. :)

  28. alison says:

    Your girls are adorable!
When my now 8 year old was about 4 1/2, she started every sentence with “did you know?”

I’m really glad she outgrew that one.

  29. mama pea, i have something i want to tell you.

i am making these tonight so that i can eat them for lunch this week.
    :)

  30. Perfect summer day, indeed! I want to go on the water slide in my pajamas.

My cousin’s daughter’s new phrase – I need it. The kid needs everything apparently.

That’s ironic, that’s one of Pea Daddy’s favorite ones too.

  31. That burger look and sounds SO ‘effin tasty MP! I love veggie burgers and I must say, this recipe has inspired me to make my own for the first time ever. ;)

  32. Jill Shelley says:

OH I so look forward to your family stories each day. I saw you posted last night before I turned off the computer but made myself wait this morning to read it!

You are so cute! Thanks Jill :)

  33. Brynne says:

I loved those kinds of summer days when I was little – playing outside with my family, even better if it included a waterslide! You’re totally the cool parents.

  34. Maria says:

You’re kids are soooo cute. I love their funny little comments haha. I have a little cousin, about who just turned 3 and she totally has an attitude all her own. The burgers look absolutely delish too! One thing though…I was curious as to if you heard of Braggs Liquid Aminos having MSG. I used to use it all the time, but apparently MSG is a byproduct of the creation process. Apparently the FDA had to even revoke their “no msg” label, because it wasn’t true anymore and the Bragg family even confirmed it. Now I use tamari or soy sauce knowing thats its a lot better and safer. Here is the link if you’re interested..

Sorry for the bad news, I just couldn’t help notcing the bottle in one of your photos…

  35. Saima says:

haha….i wonder what Pea Daddy had to show you!!

  36. Katharine says:

Looks like such a fun day! What lucky (and adorable) girls. :)

  37. Jen says:

  38. Awwww – sounds like you´ve really had an amazing day, Mama Pea!
Gotta love Gigi and Lulu :D
    They´re ADORABLE!

  39. I definitely went through a “I have something to tell you” phase—or at least all of my friends did.

  40. Marianne says:

Tempeh bacon in veggie burgers…I like that idea :D

  41. ddd says:

Gigi is the perfect hybrid between you and Pea Daddy! It’s so adorable when children look like their parents. :)
