It’s a Girls’ Night
I love my husband, truly. But we also enjoy a night when it’s just us girls. When Gigi found out that Pea Daddy was going out to watch the NBA Finals with friends tonight, she excitedly asked, “Is it a Girls’ Night?!” I confirmed her suspicions and then asked her why she liked Girls’ Nights so much. “Because we get to spend time with you, Mom.”
Apparently she’s forgetting the other 15 hours we’ve already spent together today, 15 hours in which Bingo chips were stuffed into their box, pink scarves were tossed into their trunks, plastic groceries were shoved into their shopping carts and capless markers were capped no less than twenty times. Not to mention a few potty training incidents. After my second handful of poo of the day, I cried, “I need a vacation! Somewhere where people don’t poop their pants!” Gigi looked me straight in the eye and said, “Like South Dakota?”

Exactly.
Yet, without Pea Daddy here, there’s a bit more freedom. I can walk around in mismatched socks and no one cares. That’s a lie. Lulu pointed it out at 7:54 a.m.

We can listen to the Dixie Chicks with reckless abandon.

I’ve yet to figure out why it’s more fun to take turns listening on the headphones rather than all of us listening together.

The timer on the microwave says she has 2:35 minutes and then it’s my turn.
Storytime turns into perusing cookbooks.

We can make vegan sugar cookies (for the book) at 5 p.m. and no one can tell us we’ll spoil our dinner.

As for dinner, how about dessert hummus for a first course? Ladies’ choice.

Apricot Cinnamon Almond Hummus
- 1/2 can of chickpeas, drained and rinsed
- 1 c. raw almonds
- 4 dried apricots
- 3 dried dates, pitted
- 1 t. cinnamon
- 1/2 t. salt
- 2 T. agave
- splash of water
Combine all ingredients in a high-speed blender or food processor and blend until smooth.

After dinner, we can watch a chick flick without any strings attached. Not that I ever have to barter for viewing privileges in my house…and if I did, I certainly would choose something other than Annie.

Though I’d like to believe the sun will come out tomorrow, I have my traffic court trial in the morning. Fraggle Rock.
South Dakota sounds pretty good right about now.

Good luck tomorrow Mama Pea!
Looks like a fun day, well, other than the poo!
I am going to try that hummus a.s.a.p. Did you use fresh or dry apricots? does it matter? Best of luck at court tomorrow!
Oops, sorry Jess. Yes, they are dried apricots!
Ha ha they are cute listening to the Dixie Chicks. Sounds like my kinda day.
That’s mismatched socks? Hey, as long as they’re, like, the same shape, I figure they match.
I love the hummus recipe!
I’m pretty sure I watched Annie about 27,000 times as a kid. Tell the girls they better catch up!
And as for moving to South Dakota? I’ll help you pack if I can come in your suitcase. Promise?
Missed you and so glad to be home reading your stories in a country that doesn’t block my Blogger!
XOXO,
Erin
Ahhh.. South Dakota. Been on an actual family vacation there. It wasn’t as quite as exciting as our road trip across the Midwest to all the Laura Ingalls Wilder houses. Good luck at court!
Looks like you guys had a great girls night.
I can’t wait to hear about your day in court.
Ever since sampling Crazy Camel dessert hummus, I’ve been meaning to try my own version… this one looks incredible! It’s going on my weekend meal list
.
That hummus sounds awesome!
The pic of Lulu listening is so funny
And, we have those headphones.
My L would love to hang out with L&G and look at cookbooks and take turns listening. So much!
I don’t know if Gigi’s hair is giving you troubles now, but it looks great at this length!
can’t believe daddy pea got nba finals tix!! FUN! So did you guys listen to “girls just wanna have fun” or “ladies night” while chillin?
I don’t know him personally, but I bet Pea Daddy wouldn’t care if your socks matched or not if they were the only thing you were wearing. However, I wouldn’t recommend that look for traffic court. Good luck!
I think Gigi is right, pooping in your pants is outlawed in South Dakota, so you should be safe.
Good luck at traffic court!
Is it sad that I’m using your five-year-old as fashion inspiration? I want GiGi’s dress in adult size!
What a great “girls night!” I am sure the girls will remember these for a long time!
I used to LOVE Annie when I was the girls’ age — except for that weird part at the end where they actually kidnap her. That was kind of boring. But up until then. I was that obnoxious little kid who wanted to be a Broadway star and wouldn’t shut up during musicals.
So sweet that your girls say how much they want to spend alone time with Mommy even after being home with you all day…. that must tug at your heartstrings
Have a wonderful weekend!
I am so down with dessert hummus and sugar cookies! I am also down with popcorn and mismatched socks.
That hummus sounds amazing – good luck in court!
How sweet is that Gigi?! I bet your heart just melted when she said she loves spending time with you!!!!! What a unique combination of flavors in that hummus. Sounds wonderful!!
I *loved* girls night, when I was growing up. Still do, come to think of it. There’s something about it just being the girls once in a while, that guarentees a good time.
Love the hummus recipe!
Ahh, I look forward to girls nights :> I know you probably need a break though!! My mom loves to escape by going to the movies- ALONE. You are such a great mom and it’s obvious your girls adore and look up to you. Good luck in court today!
Yet another genius hummus creation! And what a fun ladies’ day. Boys have cooties, anyway.
Good luck tomorrow (today?). I’ll have my fingers crossed.
Your girls are just the cutest things ever!
Good luck in court!!
Good luck in Court!
that hummus? YES, PLEASE!!!
and i would give my right arm to hang out with gigi, lulu and you for ladies night. just sayin’. south dakota has got nothing on that.
p.s. good luck standing up to the man tomorrow (slash today)!!!
They’re just adorable.
This is the second desert hummus I have seen since I started reading my fav blogs this morning!!
must be a sign, this one sounds delish!
We use the microwave timer all the time too! Two minutes until bed, two minutes until Dora is done, two minute time-out, etc.
wha!?!? that is RUDE! annie is one of the best movies ever!
did the girls like it?
Oh so you get to watch Annie too! My granddaughters can’t get enough of that.
I love how you said “…the other 15 hours we’ve already spent together….” Your beautiful spunky independent girls get to grow up with their Mom with them…you are giving them the best, and I think that is in part why I keep coming back to your blog.
Speaking of cook books- how is yours coming?
Great! I am much further ahead that I thought I would be at this point and I’m really loving what I’m putting together for you all! I can’t wait.
good luck in court today
girls’ night sounds amazing…and i love the dessert hummus idea…yum!
I hope everything went well for you today! Dessert hummus is one of the best ideas I’ve ever heard
Oh I’d love to know how you made those cookies. They look great!
So glad I found your blog (from greendogwine)! I am a recent veggie convert and hope to raise the kid that way too!
Hi Monica! Glad you found me too!
Hi Mama Pea! Girls night sounds fun and the dessert hummus looks fantastic!
I love your site!! You have the cutest kids ever!!
Aww, thank you!
OOO I never heard of dessert hummus. Considering I eat anytime hummus by the containers, I know I’d love this. I love girls night
I didn’t get a chance to wish you luck! I hope you kicked some ass! Whoot!
(too soon still I’ve realized)
“South Dakota…poop-free since 1837″. LOL
Gigi should be in charge of their travel / marketing campaign…
I would never have thought of a sweet hummus!!! I am going to try it for sure… I say we send all the guys to watch the playoffs, and have a massive chick flick get together w/ popcorn, adorable children, sugar cookies and dessert hummus. I’ll bring my two younger sisters and Stepmom…
One caveat… no “Steel Magnolias”. I cry so much during that movie that I get dehydrated… :p
Oh wait! And good luck at Traffic Court!!!
I can’t wait to hear about you kickin’ their collective butts.
I know every one of my comments starts with a laugh but….hahahahahaha! South Dakota!? hahaha
I’m glad you had a great girls time and kicked butt at traffic court.
Your girls are so cute! They look so vibrant, chubby and healthy considering they are on a vegetarian diet. It’s so nice to see that your girls enjoy healthy foods. My friend’s daughters are extremely skinny in comparison to your girls. They even eat meat, it can also be because they eat little. Keep up the good work!
yay for girls night! because you don’t have enough girls days!
and of course south dakota. where else? oh wait, Wyoming too.
i’m gonna have to give this dessert hummus thing a try, sounds way too intriguing. by the way, i’m totally in love with gigi’s dress. xo
your girls are so adorable!!! Hope you had a fun girls night. Just found your blog from fattiefatterton recommendation – I have a 16 month old and I’m a vegetarian and he eats mostly vegetarian and have one on the way in July and was freaking out about what he’d eat when I’m in the hospital.
Sounds like girls night was a blast! Good luck at traffic court:)
dessert hummus? sign me up
girls night sounds FUN !
those cookies and that hummus look fab.
For as much hummus as I’ve made, I don’t think I’ve ever truly made a dessert variety (the closest is mango-curry-coconut, I guess). Thanks for the rockin recipe!
Since I am writing this somewhat late, I am sure you have already had court…so I hope it went well lady!
Sounds like the perfect girls night with your cuties!
Mmm, dessert hummus – it’s been so long. I think I made chocolate once, but your apricot cinnamon version sounds amazing. Honestly Mama Pea, I CANNOT wait for your cookbook, mainly b/c I’m dying for your 1000 Island dressing recipe. Yes, still dreaming of your reuben hot dog.
Is this NBA tournament EVER going to end?!?
I’m making that hummus as I type and cannot stop licking the spatula! delicious!!
You are a hummus genius. I just made a similar version and it is unbelievable – my son is even chowing down on it with his carrots, and I have a hard time getting that kid to eat a raw veggie. Thanks!
Hello dessert hummus! I need to make me some of that asap
I love the Dixie Chicks! Too bad they aren’t all together anymore, miss their music!
So I realize I’m a few months late, but this sounds wonderful.. and luckily, I have all the ingredients on hand
Your girls are adorable!
