In the Mix
I feel like a bride who has been left at the alter.
You see, today I was going to say “I do” to the high-powered appliance of my dreams.

I’m not going to say “ita-Vay ix-May” because just the mention makes me want to switch on the Food Network with the sound turned down, throw on a Chris Isaak album and a ratty t-shirt paired with boxer shorts, and drink an entire pitcherful of poorly blended margarita smoothies by myself.
It turns out Pea Daddy was on the receiving end of some bad information about when the Road Show would be at Costco and in actuality they aren’t coming until Friday. Try telling that to the woman who shaved her legs, painted her toes, rearranged her kitchen counters and stayed up all night making ice. I finally kicked my old blender to the curb this morning too.

I decided to take him for one last ride, just for old times’ sake. I think he shed a few tears when he realized this would be our last spin of the blades.

Don’t cry, Oster, it’s not becoming. Plus, you’ll probably rust. I was gentle and tried nothing exotic. This was no time for heroics.

- 1 c. frozen strawberries
- 1 c. almond milk
- 1 scoop Sun Warrior rice protein
- 1 c. ice
- stevia
- 1/2 t. xanthan gum
Wouldn’t you know, he still needed my help in getting things started. Actions speak louder than words, buddy.

Call me heartless, but I took what I needed and left him alone with only the memory of me.

I couldn’t feel too bad, he had his chance and now I’m finally getting what I deserve.
Or so I thought. Pea Daddy soon called to inform me of the error of his ways. I soon informed him of the sleeping arrangements for the night, and not to get too excited about my shaved legs.
Lulu tried to cheer me up with a little prop comedy.

“Look, Mommy!”

“Your sock is a movie star!” I do see a striking resemblance to Lady Gaga.
We then tried to heal my wounds further by creating a snack that involved NO blenders: fruit-in-the-bottom yogurt.

I used to love fruit-in-the bottom yogurt, mostly because I could utilize my “save the best for last” technique to eating. The first two-thirds of the container was hard to get down, but man, that last third was sweet, syrupy, fruity heaven.
Since the girls usually eat soy yogurt that comes pre-mixed, they were in for a treat.

Fruit-in-the-Bottom Yogurt
- 1 16 oz. container plain coconut milk yogurt (plain soy yogurt would also work)
- 2 c. fresh strawberries, cleaned and cut into bite-size chunks
- 2 T. agave
Clean and cut your strawberries into chunks.

This alone would have been enough to satisfy the ankle grabbin’ fruit scavengers of my kitchen.

Add your agave and stir. Microwave for one minute and then mash the strawberries slightly with a fork.

Refrigerate for 30-60 minutes until mixture is chilled. Place a few tablespoons of strawberry syrup in the bottom of a dish and top with yogurt.

Serve and mix…or save the best for last.

I think they liked it.

With all the money I saved on “the appliance wedding that wasn’t,” I can now afford to buy coconut milk yogurt regularly without having to donate plasma and dance for money.
Unfortunately, though, I still need my nightly blended treat. This is going to be rather uncomfortable as I crawl back to Oster for a booty call. I didn’t mean it, Oster. You are the only one for me (until Friday…)
Of note:
***I dusted off my recipe page and it should now be up-to-date with all the latest and greatest recipes! Yup, I’m still giving the milk away for free.

I can’t wait to see all the yummy things you whip up with your vitamix.
Your fruit at the bottom yogurt looks good. I make my little one “strawberry syrup” for her pancakes by mixing some nuked frozen strawberries and a couple tablespoons of unsweetened apple sauce. The applesauce give a little sweetness but still lets the berries have that natural tang to them.
Sorry to hear that the dates got messed up, but glad you still have old faithful kicking around until then. Looking forward to see what you create on Friday!
Oh no! that is not fun to get your hopes up but at least you know you two are meant for each other. I also have an Oster so I feel your pain (hope they aren’t reading..). I’d say it appears the lil ones enjoyed the fruit on the bottom yogurt! I honestly have never had it but I just got some new coconut milk yogurt tonight…yum!
i’d ask you to marry me but i dont have a migh-powered motor capable of pulverizing all things.
…actually…
I just found your blog … and LOVE it! You’re awesome … brilliant funny …
… poor Oster.
I would love a Vitamix…congratulations on your new purchase, even if its a dream deferred for a couple more days
bahhhh! Thats still really exciting that you’re getting a vita on Friday…I want/need one! Great snack. I should try that for my hubby- he is a huge fruit on the bottom fan. I like mine mixed in well
It’s almost Vita-time! Now I must get one.
Bummer about the ita-Vay ix-May. But soon you’ll have it in your very happy hands, right? I think you gave that old Oster a good send off. Hehe to the rusting. Those things rust like the Tinman when he cries.
Fruit on the bottom – yum!
I think my husband would leave me if I told him I spent $500 on a blender. Even though the VIta is no blender…..it’s more like a gift from God!
LoL
The yogurt creation is such a great idea! I love fruit on the bottom yogurt but it seems that the only kind they sell these days is the artificial kind.
Hope you’re enjoying your week!
Great idea to make your own fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt!
Waiting a few more days for the beloved Vitamix will just make the new relationship that much more exciting
Mmmmm….fruit on the bottom yogurt– YES! Have not had this in SO long!
It’s okay– my husband knows that the vitamix is higher on our tier than he is. So is the dog.
If only I had a vitmix…then maybe i could get you to come visit me in SoCal…wait, i don’t even have any kitchen appliances. want me to give your oster a second home?
OMG you’re getting a Vita-Mix?! Lucky!!! I told Scott the other day that I think we just need to bite the bullet and order one already. Both blades please!
I have never seen the SO Delicious yogurt before, how does it taste?
your girls are going to have teh BEST lunches when they bring their lunches to school as they get older…seriously wow I am so jealous!! that fruit on the bottom yogurt is such an easy idea and looks amazing! I always stay away from the pre pacakged ones because of all the sugar, but homemade?!?! bring it on!
So fun to see you last night, again, sorry about the VitaMix fiasco. Hang in there bridesmaid, your day will come.
I literally was laughing out loud as I read this post! haha you’re too funny!
And that is why you’re bloggy is the first one I read everyday. Yup it’s true!
So sad! I heart my vitamix and can’t wait to see what you make with yours, your recipes are the best. Even if you can’t keep your my little ponies straight.
Re. the VitaMix. I have the Turboblend 4500 and am deeply in love with it. Have had it for about a year. Then, unexpectedly, the drive socket cracked and fell apart. This means there is nothing to spin the blades. I called and of course it is under warranty and they are shipping a new one….but it will be two weeks before they can get it in the mail because they are so backlogged.
I tell you this because my dad runs a smoothie business and had all Vitamixes – he said he got rid of all of them because those drive sockets went bad so frequently. (it is such a frequent problem, the Vitamix company has the drive socket replacement instructions as a PDF on their site). My dad says the Breville blends smoother (which is hard to believe!) and holds up much better. I’m not sure which model he is talking about but I could totally find out for you and leave another comment if you are interested.
The VitaMix is still great – and still the greatest blender/food processor I have ever owned…just wanted you to know about that little issue with the drive socket. So you may not want to kick the Oster to the curb as you may need it as a back up at some point…
Either way you go, it’s gonna rock!!! You’ll love it…so smooth!!! Can’t wait for Friday for you!
Thanks Christine, I appreciate all the info. I think I’m betrothed to the VM at this point, though. I’m pretty happy with their warranty, so if they treat me wrong, they’ll be hearing about it (and unfortunately, so will you all). Thanks again, though!
ugh please don’t tell me you got negative results on your before and after pictures! (i noticed you took them down) I don’t see how someone could possibly right a mean comment on them. Well anyway, I love this post! Don’t worry, you will get your vitamix SOON!
Honestly, I just felt REALLY uncomfortable about having those pictures up, for a variety of reasons. I’m confident and comfortable in my own skin, but I just didn’t feel right about it. Years of watching Oprah has taught me that if something doesn’t feel right, you have to listen to that inner voice. She also taught me not to piss off cattle farmers.
Oh, the fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt looks like a winner! And we have the exact same toddler silverware.
Oh my gosh…I want the appliance-not-to-be-mentioned soooooo badly. I can see how you’d be heartbroken
Chin up, my friend.
That smoothie looks divine. I’m lusting after a Vita-Mix myself, but it’s going to be a lot longer than a few days before I get one…. I’m in college.
hahaha ‘don’t get excited about the shaved legs’ haha.
I love you fruit on the bottom idea for the girlies! That would definitely be a hit at my house. I’m gonna give it a whirl.
Soon, it will be yours !
You know, you actually started to make me feel really sad for your Oster blender! I had to remind myself that it is just an inanimate object…
Love the homemade fruit on the bottom!! I used to eat those all the time, but I was a mixer…. no save the best for last for me! I wanted the fruit immediately
It is coming. Just a bit more of patience.
The yogurt with berries looks stunning! I can’t wait try tray that since I’ve recently been on a yogurt kick.
what a bummer! just think about when you DO get it though, you’re going to take over the world. you just can’t rush that sort of thing
lady gaga sock. epic.
am i wrong for hating fruit on the bottom yogurt? even the artificial syrupy kind. something about mushy fruit throws me off. that being said, yours looks delish!
love you!
Poor Oster…he deserves a little love! I want a vita mix too, but a 1 income family of 4 leaves the wallet a little on the slim side! I have been loving the strawberries lately too!
Mama Pea, so sorry you have to wait for your Vita! It will be on your kitchen counter soon enough, and I cannot wait to see what you make with it. You are going to get so much use out of that blender!
Your fruit on the bottom yogurt looks better than any I’ve ever bought. I think the girls thought so as well.
Ah, ha, ha! Thank you for the laugh! I look forward to seeing how the Vitamix transforms your life and lusting for one a bit more.
Where did you get those spoons. My daughter would be thrilled to eat with something so “fancy”.
I got them at this phenomenal boutique known as “the Target dollar section.”
So you’ve got a Vitamix on the horizon?? How exciting! I’m sure it will be much loved in the Pea household. Please pass any residual Oster-related sympathy on to me.
oh no! I have the same exact oster blender!!
got it about a year ago – so far so good *knock on wood*
what went wrong with yours? I hope I’m not in for an unpleasant surprise soon!! I use my blender all the time :/
p.s. I just stumbled on you recently – just thought I’d tell you your blog makes me smile =)
It will all be worth it once you have that sexy blender. I use mine once a day at least. You crack me up! LOVE this blog!
Your fruit on the bottom yogurts are so clever!! So kid friendly, I love how excited your kids get about healthy eating, it is so awesome!!
I have a feeling that once you a get Mr.Vita in your hands the honey moon phase is never going to end.
Is it xanthan gum that really makes the smoothies creamy and thick? I know some people use guar and xanthan, but I was wondering if I could JUST use guar. Or if xanthan should be in the mix there somewhere.
I just use xanthan because that’s all I can find near me. I have to commute for guar gum. Xanthan gum is said to make things thicker and guar to make them creamier. I think a combo is ideal, but I manage.
So close to a new marriage, they say the 2nd times a charm
. I just caught up on your mother’s day post, you write so beautifully. Your girls are so lucky to have you as a mother!
Poor Oster. My kenmore version sends it’s condolences. Perhaps I too will get to to venture into Vitamix land sometime soon.
You’ve inspired me to empower my son with the choice to mix in his fruit at his own whim – I’ve always pre-mixed the fruit with the plain yogurt, but perhaps he too would enjoy choking down the yogurt plain for the sugary fruity goodness that waits at the bottom…
“Why buy the cow, when you get the milk for free” is the reason I live alone. By FAR my favorite saying ever.
I cannot wait for you to get your Vita Mix! As long as you share those recipes, I promise not to turn green with envy!
Hooray for you!
XO,
Erin
So sad you have to wait a few days but it will alllll be worth it.
We had a blow-up of mega proportions you-know-where today but one complaint to the concierge and a mega credit later (not to me, my sister-in-law) and all was a little better.
I think I see a rum drink in my afternoon plans for sure.
Can’t wait to see your Vita creations! I have a feeling you may become a Vegan soup goddess!
