Senorita Margarita
I’ve been a bad, bad girl. Una chicha muy mala. I make no excuses for what I’ve done. Well, maybe just a few.
I’m not sure what it means to be truly “burning the candle at both ends,” but I’m taking that puddle of wax in the bottom of the candle holder, digging out the little nubbin of wick and taking a blow torch to it. I’m trying to attack my responsibilities methodically, which means that at the beginning of the week I’m planning ahead what recipes I’m writing for the book, what recipes I’m making for the blog, and what we are eating in the meantime. Because, as much as they’d like to, I’m not sure I’m comfortable with the girls having hummus for breakfast. Now margaritas for dinner, that’s another story.

Perhaps it makes me insensitive to the people of Mexico or at the least historically ignorant, but I have no idea what Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates (not Mexican Independence Day) or why we as Americans celebrate it (okay, it’s to honor Mexican heritage and pride). Nevertheless, when I set out to plan for recipes to prepare for today, naturally I put margaritas and Mexican pizza on the menu. Ole!
Little did I know that margaritas would be a wise choice. Pea Daddy is in the middle of a horrific arbitration at work, and opposing counsel is a piece of work. By “work,” I mean a big steaming pile of Sugar Ray Leonard. This beast of a man actually made me cry during my own experience with him in depositions a few years back. There’s nothing more professional than standing in your cotton candy pink suit in a broom closet after asking for a recess so you could sob into a scratchy brown paper towel while just praying your makeup doesn’t run.

I made Elle Woods look like Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The only way I could have been more of a girl would have been if I had walked back into depositions with a bottle of chardonnay and said, “How about we all just forget about this and go see Sex and The City 2?” These kind of experiences are those that led me to question my life’s course of action and pray that something or someone would intervene so I would never have to earn a living this way again.

Prayers answered. Muchas gracias.
Of course, now I have my own challenges, like trying to keep everyone in clean clothes.

Or out of clean clothes.

Or from capsizing the laundry basket boat.

Or from abusing the furniture.

(I don’t even take the Dora potty seat off anymore. I’m lazy…and it’s cushy.)
Or from getting kicked out of charm school.

Or en pantalones.

Pea Daddy was still not home at 9 pm, and though I love the one-on-one time with the girls, by about dinnertime we all wanted to lose our pants and have a stiff drink. Una bebida fuerte.

Mama’s Margarita Smoothies
- 1 c. lime seltzer
- 1/2 c. light coconut milk
- 1/2 c. orange juice
- 1/4 c. lime juice
- 1/4 c. cilantro
- 1 c. spinach
- 1 c. frozen pineapple
- 1/2 c. ice
- stevia to taste
- sea salt to rim glasses
Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
Wet the rim of your serving glass and dip in coarsely ground sea salt.

Pour and enjoy.
I don’t have a lot of knowledge of tequila, other than the fact that it makes people’s clothes fall of in country songs, it’s the name of a ridiculous reality TV “star,” and I once had an ex that had a pet ferret named Jose Cuervo (he put the “ass” in “classy”). So maybe, if you had a hard day in the courtroom, or maybe just a hard day in the living room, you might want to add a shot or two.
For me, I chose to get my kicks out of sheer rebellion. You see, when Pea Daddy finally got home and ate his room temperature tofu, sweet potatoes and peas (I know how to treat my man right), he headed off to bed, believing that I wouldn’t dream of watching LOST, something we have done together every week for the last six years, without him. You snooze, you lose. I drink mock booze.

Lo siento, Papa de Chicaros.

If it makes you feel any better, my pile of laundry is way higher than that and my youngest son is 9 and his pants seem to still come off every evening! The smoothie sounds delicious. I hope Pea Daddy comes home a little earlier tonight!
I don’t know if I could resist a drop of tequila in there…
Yum, I haven’t had a margarita in a long time. I miss the taste but not the effects, haha. So this smoothie sounds great! You rock, as you know
you have me now craving booze!! haha…
great post. i have no idea what today signifies either…all i do know is that for some reason on this day i want to make tacos and yummy mexican food…
the smoothie sounds yummy!’
=)
That is the most creative margarita I’ve ever seen!
Tequila DOES in fact make your clothes fall off. Don’t ask me how I know that.
I can’t stand real margaritas. The sugar gives me a mega stomach ache.
My mom used to have a rule: you must wear a shirt at the dinner table. Maybe you should institute a pants rule? Or maybe not…not would be more fun
that looks delicious. I think I may just replace the lime seltzer with tequila, that should be about the right amount
I’m going to agree with Jessica up there… but the spinach balances out the tequila right?
I loved this post from beginning to end!! I would love to know the percentage of Americans that actually know what Cinco de Mayo celebrates! I try and remember, but I seem to forget every year (I can’t remember anything anymore with “placenta head”).
Your girls get more and more beautiful everyday…I love the picture of them in the laundry boat-basket. Classic!!!
I can’t even name anything else specific that I loved – it was ALL good!
nothing wrong with hummus for breakfast
seriously…
Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at The Battle Of Puebla in 1862. It’s a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican city of Puebla (and throughout the State of Puebla), with some limited recognition in other parts of Mexico.
There ya go!
Oh my goodness your girls look so adorable!!! Looks like you ladies know how to have fun. haha
Amazing ‘margarita’! I gotta try that sometime.
This was hilarious–might have to give it a try because I’m not a big drinker but this look refreshing and yum!
this is great! i need to make it now.
You are so sassily adorable. I can’t wait to buy your cookbook.
Hahahaha, I think you deserve a little tequila up in that glass
LOVE LOVE LOVE that margarita
I’m so confused, are you not suppose to celebrate cinco de mayo on May 5th (today)?? It sounds like you already celebrated it and went to bed….yesterday…? LoL =p
We’re having Mexican pizza tonight. I wanted you all to have the margarita smoothie recipe today. I’m a giver.
Happy Cinco de Mayo!!
Dang it, carbzilla beat me to it
She’s right though!
I can’t believe how big the girls are…
Love this idea!
I love that you made non-alcoholic margaritas. I’m not a fan of drinking, so these would be fabulous to make during the summer. You are a true culinary genius Mama Pea!
This is my favorite post you have ever written.
While both girls are absolute dolls, Lulu’s hair just kills me – so adorable. I always think I don’t really want kids, until I read your blog! Thanks for making that maternal instinct kick in a few times a day!
Pea Daddy missed out, for sure!
I hope tears from the episode didn’t fall into your smoothie!
You mean, you spent over 12 hours playing with the girls without hubby help and you still didn’t put any rum in that smoothie? Good for you!
That’s some serious will power there.
lots of green peas going on here!
question- I know I’ve seen you eat sabra hummus before. do you mix the center in or eat around it?
I usually eat around it and then about halfway through the tub, I mix it in. I have no explanation for this. It’s like, “Does your toilet paper roll go over the top or underneath?” I just do it.
Hi have a random question for you… You know those cookie dough balance bars? I think you’ve mentioned you use to eat them, well I love them! Do you think it would be possible/realistic to make them on your own? Like what you did with the KIND bars.. I’m not asking you to come up w/ a recipe (Although I would totally love you for it!!
) bc I know how busy you must be! I’m just simply wondering if you think its possible..
Oh, I wish I could! I will try so hard. I still LOVE them. I eat about a 1/2 of one a day that somehow slips by my food diary. I’m going to brainstorm some ideas.
Your girls are so darn cute and remind me a lot of my sister and me when we were little. I was the older sister with dark curly hair, and my little sister had lighter, straight hair. I’m a recent follower of yours and find you have GREAT information in all your posts. Plus, I love your humor! Thanks for entertaining me each day!
Fun recipe. I wish I was going out for Cinco tonight. Life of a mom. That would be a big fat You’re Staying In and folding laundry! xo
We made a key lime smoothie this morning using avocados, it was delicious. We will have to make yours now. YUM!
Your kids are adorable, I am not sure how you get any work done. xoxo
Um, you managed to combine my FAVORITE flavors of lime, coconut, pineapple and salt into one beautiful glass of love. I thank you for that.
I also can’t resist adding to ellliebelle’s post above – Your girls remind me of my sister and I as well – she has the dark curly hair, while I’m the younger sister with straight blonde hair, although I can’t rock the pigs the way Lulu can
What can I say? Sisters are special!

Oh my gosh, I love it! First time you’ve done a “cocktail,” yes? Awesome.
I was so not out tonight. I was emailing clients, fiddling with my expenses, and then editing for three hours. Maybe I need a Gigi to come along.
JUST kidding. I mean that, God. That was not me tempting fate.
I love the thought for some reason of cilantro and spinach and pineapple and coconut milk together. I just know this would taste amazing. Tomorrow I will find out for sure!
Pea Daddy went crazy for this tonight. He wouldn’t even share it with the girls.
Yummy! Except yes, I would totally add tequila
Love the picture of GiGi with the peas. Classic!
…I know this isn’t the point of the post title, but that is one of my favorite Tim McGraw songs
I was actually thinking of that song when I wrote the title
Mama Pea! This is one of my favorite posts of yours ever! I love the rhyming!
this is hilarious. you are a genius. happy cinco de mayo
I would think those green margaritas would be the perfect pick me up for any Cinco de Mayo revealers – so if you add the tequila the night before, whip up a virgin batch for the morning after.
So interesting to hear about your former life as a lawyer. I was wondering- I’m assuming Pea Daddy, despite the occasional horrific arbitration DOES enjoy being an attorney? I am just asking because I see a lot of women attorneys go through similar situations, and I always wonder if the men just love the law or if they secretly are praying to be able to stay home with their kids too?
Obviously you don’t have to share Pea Daddy’s personal feelings on your blog, but I was just curious what you think about this in general.
your girls are too cute, as usual.
Stories like yours are the reason that my husband does NOT want to go into law practice, but will instead be teaching law. I think it fits more into his personality as the wandering, Brooks Brothers-wearing, professor with a hot wife
I’m glad you’ve found something much much better, too
How awesome is that Mama Pea margarita??
Don’t worry, I’m fully one of those ignorant Americans who have no idea what Cinco de Mayo is for other than giving me an excuse to eat Mexican food and drink something. Fully living up to the American way!
I LOVE THIS SMOOTHIE! It’s awesome and the color is fantastic. And the fact that it is willing to have some sort of adult beverage added to it makes it fabbo.
Also when you say coconut milk, you are referring to the canned stuff and not the SO Delicious stuff, yes?
Freck gf…that smoothie is on my party list for the weekend. And I say weekend because I’d totally add liquor.
Hey, give a shout out to Papa Pea for me, my bro is going to see your friend the Star Trek junkie ykwim (names avoided to protect the innocent), to talk to her about his child support issue. We appreciate the referral.
Heart you…as always!
What a creative and festive smoothie! I think mine would have that last ingredient tacked on though
I was sure there was going to be a comment about adding a splash of something else to the adult version.
I have been known to eat toast with hummus for breakfast. I am a grown up and you can’t stop me. So there.
I just found your blog and love it! Your recipe collection looks fabulous! I look forward to reading more.
Thanks, Sara!
Lovin the smoothie ! I don’t know that i could resist spiking it ;P
i need that smoothie in my life. what fun, unique blend of flavors and ingredients. chock another fab recipe up to mama pea.
and since i am catching up on three posts, the fact that you replicated the KIND bar brings such joy to my heart. glad you had a fab b-day L:)
Your drink may be 0% alcohol, but that’s still 100% more than I did to celebrate Cinco de Mayo! I totally spaced and had a risotto for dinner. We’ll just say it was arroz and call it good.
Tequila is vegan, right?
i definitely forgot about it being 5/5 yesterday. i did speak a bit of spanish to our building doormen, so ill call that “celebrating” … gigi and lulu seriously get cuter by the second. who needs charm school?
