Things Are Getting Nutty

Today was one of those days when even the most common occurrences entertain me a little more than they should.  I’d attribute it to the six hours of sleep I’m averaging per night.  I know, I know.  What can I say?  Exciting things are happening, by which of course I mean the season premiere of The Hills.

I awoke at 5:30 to the cries of Lulu from her crib, saying, “No!  I don’t want to be a doctor!” I’m choosing to believe that in her dream, she and Gigi were assigning roles in their make-believe game of “doctor,” and not that she is subconsciously feeling the pressure of those MCAT flashcards I make her scroll through and answer correctly before she gets her afternoon snack.

Even nuttier, Pea Daddy had this guy sitting with his belongings that he takes to work: his wallet, keys, glasses, phone and Sports Illustrated (?).  Boyfriend needs a man purse.

Of course, I took it as an opportunity to practice my stand-up routine.

“Is that your surprise witness in the hearing?” I asked and then, in my best TV voice, narrated, “Pea Daddy rose from his chair and said, ‘The plaintiff’s attorney would like to call the Mariner Moose to the stand.’  The courtroom buzzed with gasps and cries of shock and the Defendant slammed his fist on the counsel table saying, ‘Damn that insufferable Moose!‘”

Pea Daddy was not amused.

Even Gigi was caught up in some wacky antics:  setting booby traps.

That’s what I said, booty twaps.

I nearly broke my neck cleaning up the breakfast dishes while she staged her own tryout for Home Alone 4.  I must confess, I had to Google to see what number the last Home Alone movie was and came upon this gem.

Now that’s nutty.

Even nuttier, Lulu decided to stick her mouth on the sriracha bottle when I opened the fridge to make lunch.  “Get it out of my mouth, Mom!” she protested.

She was right.  We needed a delicious, nutty palate cleanser.  Stat.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Cereal Mix

  • 3 c. Kashi Go Lean Cereal (you could substitute Cheerios, Wheat Chex, Kashi H2H or any whole grain, unsweetened cereal)
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1/2 c. dried blueberries (you could use any dried fruit, but the blueberries give it that “jelly” flavor)
  • 3 T. natural peanut butter
  • 1 T. vegan margarine (i.e. Earth Balance)
  • 2 T. maple syrup or agave

Preheat oven to 175 degrees.

Put cereal in a large bowl and fight the urge to pour milk on it, park it on your couch and watch The Hills premiere replay.  Again.  You know who you are.  Add blueberries and salt.

Put peanut butter, vegan margarine and syrup or agave in a small dish and microwave for 30 seconds.  Stir until combined.

Fight the urge to grab a spoon, park it on your couch and make your 2 year-old watch surgeries on the Discovery Channel with you.  Yeah, that one is me.  Pour peanut butter mixture over the cereal and stir well.

Spread cereal on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with non-stick cooking spray and bake for 90 minutes, stirring once during baking.

Oh my peas.  Make this.  You will want to eat the whole pan and then make another batch to pour milk over and eat while sitting on your couch and watching 16 and Pregnant.  Again.  You know who you are.

Gigi enjoyed hers in the nuttiest way possible, while horizontally hula hooping,

and Lulu mistakenly thought she got to have some, even though she hadn’t correctly answered how to demonstrate the validity of the Regulative Hypothesis in an organism.

That nutty kid.

  1. Kathleen says:

Can’t wait to make this tomorrow! I am struggling with coming up with ideas for snacks that a) aren’t complete crap and b) can be left in ziploc bags in the car because we have so many after school activities during the spring. (The fresh fruit slices I left in there by accident didn’t fare too well)

  2. oh the nuttiness! i can hardly stand it :)

  3. Tay says:

Oh goodness making that ASAP!! And you’ll probably find me in front of 16 and pregnant with it. Or Charmed reruns. Yes – I admit that one.

  4. Gliding Calm says:

i am trying that!!! :) microwave recipe!? YESSSS

  5. Jessica Lee says:

I definitely want to make that but i wont because not only will I want to eat the whole pan, I actually will!

  6. Kilee says:

I got sucked into those 16 & pregnant marathons when I had cable. Then I would find myself crying and all emotional. Ugh! They were really addicting and sometimes sweet. Cereal bars look great!

  7. My man needs a man purse badly. He carries keys, wallet, chapstick (lipgloss?), bottled water, energy drinks, protein bars, his ipod, and cell phone where ever he goes. The man needs help.

  8. homecookedem says:

Oh that PB cereal mix looks great!! Thanks for starting my day off right with a laugh!! :)

  9. Lauren says:

This is by far the best snack I have seen in ages. Wow, what an incredible concept!! I’m so pumped for your cookbook to come out. :)

  10. “Get it out of my mouth” and no TWSS?! Sigh. Things are changing. :-)

I typed that and deleted it 35 times.

  11. Oh no, bad decision on the hot sauce! I like to do the cereal mix mix with just peanut butter and diced apple and a little bit of maple or agave on top! So good!!! I have not done that in a while. I think I know what my snack will be today!!! Have a great day, Sarah!

  12. you know what’s funny? when I saw your vlog I expected your beautiful daughters to talk MORE…I always forget they are so young!

  13. elizabeth says:

Mama Pea–what happened to your BFL pages? Did I somehow miss them being taken down?

  14. It looks like to me that Mr. Moose is waiting with open arms for some snack mix.

Cereal mix looks great! I love making mixes like that because they are totally portable if they ever make it out of the house.

  15. CARRIE says:

Woah, I don’t comment often..but looking back a few posts, I would for sure buy a cookbook from you! Your food always looks so healthy and delicious!

  16. And this is why it is so awesome you are writing your own cookbook. Because I would have never thought to combine those ingredients and pour them on cereal and bake them. I would, however, have thought of eating it while watching trashy TV while my spousal equivalent makes fun of me.

  17. Janelle says:

That mix looks dangerous – I’m thinking it is something I should avoid. I can’t wait to get my hands on your cookbook, not only for the recipes, but for the laughs!

  18. Hailey S. says:

That cereal mix looks so good I’m sure my “little helpers” can help me concoct it today. My daughter also sets (Booty twaps) around the kitchen. Good times!!

  19. That cereal sounds amaaazing, mama pea! I seriously want to make it now. Except I’m at work. Or tonight…but then there’s that other job. Nuts! I’ll make it eventually :)

  20. Kelly says:

That’s what I said…booby twaps! Goonies!! My child is obsessed with Goonies lately…wonder where he gets that from. Hmm…
I’m gonna have to try your cereal mix!
Heart the Peas, have a great day!

  21. emily says:

wondering the same about bfl page?!
    cereal bars look yummy!!

Hey Em, due to time constraints (and a few negative comments) I took the BFL pages down. I wasn’t even sure if anyone was reading them. They aren’t deleted and I can put them back up if need be (and try to keep up with them despite my lack of meaningful time to shave my armpits) if I get enough requests (this is #3). Let me know if there’s any info I can provide in the meantime!

  22. Kelly says:

Wow MP, Meghann gave you some mad props on her blog this morning! Well deserved, sweets. :)

  23. Kati says:

He does need a man purse! My husband doesn’t even want to carry my keys around if he’s the one that drove. That PB&J Cereal mix looks yum! My cravings-or lack of, are up and down these days but I’m going to have to try this for sure. I read you blog with new joy these days…I’m going to have a little pea of my own!!!

    Congratulations, Kati!

  24. I love all things PB&J – I will have to try this!

  25. Kellie says:

My kids room is one big booby trap. I try not to go in there in the dark.

  26. I can’t even watch 16 and pregnant. It’s too disheartening for me.

  27. I love that Gigi is trying to end you up with another back injury…the love of kids :-)

I am glued to 16 and pregnant but it ticks me off. I want children so bad and to see how these kids treat their kids makes me so angry.

  28. mary says:

I love this! your children are beautiful!

  29. Caroline says:

Lulu and I woke up the same way!! Only I’m 21 suffering thru organic chemistry and about to take the MCAT!

  30. Adam says:

How sad is it that i actually have MCAT flash cards, and i go over them daily, but i have no clue how to answer your question… I really hope that one is not going to be on there ;) I’m thinking just for kicks i will make this cereal concoction the day of my test!

  31. mmmmmmmmm sriracha! That’s basically a food group in our house :)

  32. why are those shows so damn addicting?! I watched the hills this morning after I saw the whole thing, yet I still wanted to re-watch it, is that sad or what?! I WANT THAT ‘GRANOLA’ RIGHT NOW!!

  33. Felicia says:

i really liked your BFL page :( believe it or not it really helped me get out of the rut of “i need to jog as many miles as possible in order to loose weight” when i can get awesome results in 20 of HIIT- it was motivating! but i totally understand how time comsuming it is- love your blog though, & we love ya :)

That’s #4…if I get more than 20, I guess I’ll have no choice but forgo an additional 15 minutes of my life and keep posting it ;) HIIT is it!

  34. all i can say is that this looks like an addiction waiting to happen.

and when you said 16 and pregnant, how did you know i watched that?!?!?!

  35. Julie says:

Snack mix looks great – we’ll be trying that and your oatmeal squares, garbanzo bean burgers, green smoothies…so many things to try! So glad I stumbled upon your blog – you clever and witty mom! You have a gift. I’ve told all my friends about the “dense and hard to swallow” Sarah Palin quip. Love it!
I had been checking out your BFL pages – luckily, I printed several of your weekly meal plans so I can get started even if you don’t repost the page. Would like to see them back so put me down as #5!

  36. Therese says:

Everyone needs to stop drinkin’ the haterade!!! You are fabulous and I’m bummed you got negative comments on your BFL page…I loved it!

So chalk me up as #5 :)

    …and go shave those pits!

  37. Katie says:

What happened to BFL?!?! And congrats on the book — I can’t wait to wait in line for it. :)

See the comments above, Katie. That’s #7 for those of you keeping track at home. I suggest you organize a telethon.

  38. I think the moose would make a fine witness ; ) haha you made me laugh!

  39. claire says:

My man gets to have a man purse since he works on movie sets, yes yes, and backpack. He has to carry A LOT for work, as do I! I am also going to chime in and say I loved the BFL page…sad to see you got negative comments. Who would do such a thing. The girls must have loved that snack, sounds perfect!

    #8 and feelin’ great…

  40. Laura says:

De-lurking to say I’m #9 for BFL! As long as it’s not too stressful for you, it is always informative and interesting to read. :)

  41. gwen says:

Cereal snack looks awesome!! I’ll have to add the recipe to my girl’s afternoon snack rotation.

Please bring back the BFL!! I’ve just started the plan and was getting a lot of inspiration from your vegan protein options :)

They’re back. I have no backbone. Literally.

  42. Precisely why I don’t want to make this…Oh my peas. Make this. You will want to eat the whole pan and then make another batch to pour milk over and eat . ;)

  43. Jaclyn says:

I love anything with an oat. On a side note – I love the Goonies reference ;) . Long live Data.

  44. Lauren says:

I will dominate this cereal mix. Cereal doesn’t stand a chance around me – especially when it’s coated with peanut butter and maple syrup!

  45. melanie says:

Love your blog and really loved the BFL page. Please put it back up!

  46. It’s a full moon, I posted yesterday on that and why it’s super increased in nuttiness levels :)

The pb/agave action mixture…oh my. Goodness. Yes.

    Love that!

  47. Katherine says:

looks so great! I thought it said jolly for a moment when I glanced at first (instead of jelly). I hope your book comes up with creative recipe names!
    Katherine

  48. Gabriela says:

YUUUM – delicious recipe, Mama Pea!
Lulu and Gigi are SO cute!
    :)
Congrats on beeing such a wonderful Mom!
    Have a great night!
    Brazilian XOXO´s,
    Gabriela

  49. Melissa S. says:

I totally make that mix but with chex, add in peanuts and pretzel pieces and maybe some chocolate chips afterwards…TO.DIE.FOR.

    mama pea = genius.

  50. I’m not kidding, you’ve literally made me eat a spoonful of peanut butter with my Cocoa Krispies! Aren’t you happy I found those in Japan? Really not the same, I have to say. So disappointing.
And you know what else was weird about it? The soy milk there does not contain emulsifiers, so it separates, like miso soup. Do you know what I’m talking about? How your miso soup needs constant stirring? Maybe you don’t like miso soup, anyway, just know that having to stir your cereal is NOT fun.
    Even if it IS chocolate.
    Missed you.

  51. Deb says:

I see a lot of you in that picture of Lulu! It’s a great shot! And I LOVED the mix…had it with soymilk myself, and ate what the boys didn’t. =)

  52. janetha says:

im glad i get to read 4 posts of yours right now while i sit on hold with the wells fargo funding department for the next half hour. for work. because you’re funny. i just hope i don’t spit coffee all over my keyboard.

the man purse moose thing killed me.

i wonder if i could have the patience to make that delicious treat. i usually don’t even have the patience to get a bowl…

  53. Beverly says:

This looks scrumptious! I chuckle because if I tell my fiance’ I get these types of recipes off of “healthy eating” blogs he scoffs and says “it’s ok” but tonight I made some fairly good for you pumpkin cookies in a healthy version and he goes “Something tells me these are healthy for me?” I smiled and said “probably not”, to which his answer was “then we better keep me away from them because they’re really amazing!” LOL I mean, why tell him the truth right? Organic pumpkin, whole wheat flour.. it did have sugar in it.. so technically it wasn’t a “healthy” recipe per say! LOL

So I shall make this cereal munchie and never tell him the truth. He’s been eating my organic, flourless peanut butter cookies like they’re going out of style…. until I commented to someone else who was raving that they’re really not too bad for you because …. and suddenly “I’m tired of them” LOL
