Postcard from the Peas: Day 6

Take it from me, no matter where you are vacationing, no matter how many kids you have and no matter what you are promised awaits you at the end of your drive, it’s not worth spending more than 45 minutes in a car. They could have had leprechauns on pegasuses sliding down rainbows and throwing diamonds, emeralds and white chocolate truffles in Hilo and it wouldn’t have been worth 5 hours in the car yesterday.

We saw Hilo. At least I did. Gigi was in timeout in the car with Daddy for not wanting to hold that claw I call “my hand,” and Lulu was questioning why the Farmer’s Market had no face painting or balloons. The silver lining was we found the Hilo equivalent of the Whole Foods hot bar at a little health food store called Down to Earth. The curried quinoa, vegetable korma and teriyaki tofu were outstanding. Ahhh, just like home.

Today we stayed within that 45 minute radius by visiting the $33M complex known as the Hilton Waikaloa. This resort is unbelievable, with a dolphin lagoon, tram system, flamingos, canals, parrots and waterslides. Almost as fabulous were the chili spiced watermelon and mango mojitos. Ahhh, not even the slightest bit like home. But soon enough, I’ll be drinking my green juice in the rain again.

See you soon with another guest post!

  1. Our family always lounged at those insaaaanely beautiful hotels over there. They are quite a site to see…slash nap.

  2. Mojitos are my FAVE! That resort sounds unreal!

  3. Gena says:

Flamingos! Cool. I continue to live vicariously through the Pea fam :)

  4. *Making note not to go to Hawaii until my daughter is at least 8* – Thanks! :D

    Beautiful pics.

I don’t do well in the car for 5 hours and it’s usually just Chris and I, so I applaud you for doing so well with 2 little ones added to the mix! That resort sounds fantastic!! I wish we’d found that little health food place while we were there. Thank you for the great updates! :)

I visited a Down to Earth when I was staying/working on Maui last summer. The baked goods were delish….I still dream about something called the Menehune bar and some another bar with coconut! Looks like you all are having a great vacation.

  7. I’ve stayed at the Hilton Waikaloa on the Big Island! It is definitely amazing but after a week there we were really getting cabin fever, even in paradise. But then again, I was too young at the time for chili spiced watermelon and mango mojitos ;)

    Love your floppy hat!

  8. Gorgeous!! Looks like such a wonderful vacation!

  9. Sara says:

Aww, is that a reluctant Gigi making-up-with-Mommy face in the last photo? Very jealous of your Whole Foods/Hawaiian/Whole-Foods-Hawaiian experience! Ooh, and you might like this: check out the promo/discount I’m hosting on my blog for Love Street Foods (raw/organic/vegan chocolate, fruit, nuts, etc.)! It’s excellent stuff.

  15. Liz says:

Wow! I live in Kurtistown–which is about 10 miles south of Hilo! It’s been awesome seeing all your pics! Hope you like the Big Island! It’s been raining a lot on my side–hope it’s sunny there!
