Groundhog Day
I knew it was going to be a crazy day. Two trips each way to preschool, a trip to the pediatrician and two hours in the dentist’s chair later, it’s finally winding down. I wish I had some great photos, marginally funny jokes and yummy recipes for you, but I knew a traditional post wasn’t happening when my dentist said, “It’s not going to be a fun food day for you.”
I can show you the fabulous food my friend Deb brought over tonight though, including vegan enchiladas,

and whole wheat banana bread.

I can also show you how awful we thought the Peanut Butter Blondies with Chocolate Ganache were.

That’s embarassing.
So since Tuesday is February 2nd, in true Groundhog’s Day fashion, I thought it might be fun to put last year’s February 2nd from my old blog on repeat. So throw on a little Sonny and Cher, “I Got You, Babe,” kick your feet back, and enjoy…
February 2, 2009
I got some yoga in this afternoon, the Yoga Sculpt program from Exercise TV. This baby is hard! (That’s what she said!) I was out of breath and sweating by the time I was done. (That’s what she said!) It never gets old.
I mixed up a random snack of 1/4 c. canned pumpkin, a tablespoon or two of cottage cheese, 1/2 a scoop of chocolate protein powder, a few banana slices, a sprinkle of granola and 2 tsps. of peanut butter.

I was about to have some Peanut Butter Puffins for “snack dessert” when there was a knock at the door. Sadly, I put the box away.
SURPRISE! It was my girlfriend and her two kiddos, stopping by to return a book I loaned her (Intuitive Eating, which is fab, by the way) and to bring me these:

That’s In Defense of Food, by Michael Pollan, which I’ve been wanting to read (in all my spare time) and a loaf of her homemade Spelt Flax Bread. She baked the bread today and it was still warm! I could smell the yeasty goodness.
The kids played while we talked running (she’s the marathoner), food and kids.
After they went home, I got to work on my Fry O’ the Day: ZUCCHINI FRIES!!!
I still had two zucchini in my fridge from my “why oh why did I enter the BSI” contest attempt. I cut the squash into fry shapes and seasoned ‘em with salt and pepper. I put them on a sprayed cookie sheet in a 450 degree oven for 20 minutes, flipping them after 10 minutes.

Once on my plate, I sprinkled them with some freshly grated Parmesan cheese and had a little cup of marinara for dipping.
Of course, I also busted open the GORGEOUS loaf of bread.

I served myself up the butt, some steamed veggies, a Boca tomato basil bruschetta patty and my zucchini fries with dipping sauce.

The fries were tasty, but you have to eat them fast. They got a little limp (that’s what she said!). Tired of that yet?
Actually, what Gigi said was, “They’re too smooshy.” She’s getting into the Fry O’ the Day spirit, though, as she BEGGED to have my dipping cup so she could make “spaghetti fries” out of her pasta. Can I count that as another fry?
The highlight of the dinner by far was the bread. I’ve already got the recipe on its way.
After dinner I played a mind numbing game of Pictionary with Gigi. I drew a pumpkin, a slice of dessert and I said, “It rhymes with ____” and then I drew an eye. For ten solid minutes it was, “Pumpkin cake?!” “Pumpkin pizza?” “Oooh oooh, pumpkin circle eye?!!!” I was in tears I was laughing so hard.
We are watching the Blazers now and I’m contemplating both a snack and what will be my Fry O’ the Day tomorrow. I already had an idea, which is now coming to fruition thanks to that tasty, tasty bread. Act surprised, okay?
******
What a difference a year makes! You know you miss my dairy products, my filthy jokes and my twice a day posts (!). I’ll be back tomorrow, dairy-free, with ONE ORIGINAL post, and maybe even an off color joke or two, which of course will be only marginally funny.
Edited to add: If you’ve been blogging for a year, and want to follow my lead and slack off post last year’s post today, you have my blessing.

Soooooo you’re the one who introduced blogland to TWSS….
I didn’t follow your blog a year ago but it looks just as funny as it is now. Love it!!
Love the flashback post.
hi mama pea! i love reading your blog – your girls are adorable! i enjoyed the one year ago post (i haven’t been reading quite that long now) and love anything by michael pollan..have you heard any buzz around the book “vegetarian myth”? wanted to maybe get a vegan’s take on it if you had. : )
Brianne, I haven’t heard anything about the book “Vegetarian Myth,” but now I’m intrigued. I’ll see if I can find it on Amazon. Just the title alone has me thinking it would be a great read.
Ah, TWSS jokes are the best! I loved the flashback and how you can still tell what a fun mama you are!
PB blondies and chocolate ganache. Man, i need some dessert. but it is after 11pm, so I guess I will just go to bed.
you inspired me to go back and look at my post from last year at this time. funny!
im so happy you posted this! i just found your blog a little while ago so it’s nice to see the flash back. plus i never would have found the wonderful flax bread recipe if you didn’t. i will definitely be trying it soon
in regards to the molasses, though, could i use blackstrap? and do you know approx. how many servings the bread makes (or at least how many a loaf is)? i usually cut recipes down since i cook mostly for myself so that would be super helpful.
also, what did you think of michael pollan’s books? i’ve been wanting to read them, too, and don’t know where to start. i’m vegan, too, so i thought it might be an interesting read.
have a lovely day!
xox
Mandilee, the recipe makes two loaves, so you might want to cut it in half, or plan to freeze a loaf. You can absolutely use blackstrap. I really enjoyed In Defense of Food, though at the time, my brain wasn’t really into it…the only time I really had to read was while breastfeeding Lulu
I’d like to reread it as well as The Omnivore’s Dilemma, now that my brain cells are replenishing themselves.
It is so weird seeing dairy products on your blog, even if it is just a repeat of last year. I wasn’t a reader back then, but it looks like it was just as great. I do miss the pics of your adorable girls though!
where is your old blog? would love to read it!
Unfortunately, I had to take my old blog down because of privacy issues. That’s why I don’t use our real names now.
What’s funny is it’s Skylar’s bday on Feb 2 which is sort of a surreal day to have a birthday. 3 years ago right at this very moment, I was going into labor. Not counting the 8 weeks of braxton hicks that I already had
Hope life is treating you well and chaos is not reigning supreme in the Pea house, but I am sensing it is. Hang in there!
Um, yeah. Great idea, but I just went back and read my post from tomorrow’s date one year ago, and it bored me to tears. Yikes. Yours was much more fun to read and brought back memories from when I first started reading your blog. I definitely remember Fry Week.
Sounds like you guys have had a rough couple of days! I hope your dental woes are minimal and you’re back to crunching on your Hugh Jasses soon.
…Did you ever get the bread recipe?
The bread recipe is actually on my recipe page now (the Peas and Carrots tab)!
omg I had to read this post like 3 times until I figured out it was old! haha I was like Parmesan what!??
Wish I had a flashback post to post! I am loving the enchiladas!
YUM! I want those enchiladas
I didn’t know you’ve only been vegan for a year? Do you mind if I ask why you decided to make the change? I have been eating mostly vegan for dietary reasons and I am always curious to hear what provokes people to make this change in their life.
I loved your blog a year ago and I love it today!
Hope you have a wonderful day hun!
I’m contemplating doing a post on why I went vegan. It’s actually quite personal, and I’m trying to get the courage up to share!
I’m glad you posted this! I didn’t discover your blog until it became PATY
lol– cute! Love the Groundhog Day references even more now that I live only an hour from Puxatawny
I haven’t been blogging for a year, but considering the following you have, maybe I’ll just post your Feb. 2 post from last year as my own in the spirit of Groundhog Day…I kid, I kid.
Hope you feel better. I would like to adopt Deb as my new best friend, seeing as the food looks delicious.
I’m reading _In Defense of Food_ right now, and I have to say it’s REALLY interesting. Pollan’s use of rhetoric is extremely effective (moreso than in a different book I tried to read by him… that I gave up on)! It’s a very quick read, and I’m looking forward to finishing it this week.
Good idea Mama Pea. I loved Groundhog Day. Hilarious movie, and I totally remember this post b/c I made your zucchini fries. Forgot about those. They were good!
Hope you’re feeling better today.
P.S. Deb looks like an amazing cook!
I love last year’s post! I was cracking up…Ah, pictionary. We bought that game at a garage sale for $1 and so need to pull it out…Happy Groundhog Day!
vegan enchiladas = must know more plz!
HAHA love that you were even using TWSS back then!!
I’m getting the recipe from Deb and will share it with you soon!
Funny that you weren’t vegan back then! When you mentioned the cheese I thought it was a joke haha. I actually really like the idea of zucchini fries – yum!
Love the flash back post! Loved the old blog, and the new one too!
Yikes, hope your dental issues aren’t too uncomfortable by now! You know, you have a great idea here — I may just do likewise and post last year’s 2/2 post tonight, for funsies (and because I really won’t have time to write a new one…). Considering I already did one quasi-nostalgia post last night, I think I’ll be in for a shock when I go back even further to see what I was writing about a year ago!
I remember that!
oh my gosh, i only wish i have been blogging for a year because i would TOTALLY do this. hmmm…maybe i can rationalize posting something from a random day or something? today is crazy. let it be over.
love ya!
everything looks so delicious!
It is always quite funny to go back and read what you wrote a long time ago. Things definitely change and I think you really do get into a more relaxed rhythm as you go along. Loved you then and now!
Yum! I’ve been meaning to make zucchini fries for a long time and I never thought to use marinara sauce for dipping! I guess that would take some sugar out of my diet. I’ve been making carrot fries and think they’re great.
Good luck with the dentist!
