Irresistible

I couldn’t resist my craving for a green smoothie in a bowl this morning.

  • 3 handfuls of spinach
  • almond milk
  • ice
  • frozen strawberries
  • frozen pineapple
  • stevia
  • 1/2 scoop protein powder
  • cinnamon
  • Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Spice Granola

A little trick I’ve been using is to blend my spinach with the almond milk before adding anything else.  That way, the spinach gets blended up really quickly and I don’t have to stand there with my abused plastic spatula plunging into the blades until The Biggest Loser contestants get skinny.

I couldn’t resist going back for more granola halfway through the bowl.  I’m starting to realize that my smoothies in a bowl are really just turning into bowls of cereal with green “milk,” which is far tastier than the blue skim milk that I used to drink.

I couldn’t resist using Lulu’s morning activity as an excuse to watch my favorite SNL skit of all time.

“D*#k in a Box?” meet Foot in a Jar.

Step 1: Open the jar.

Step 2: Put your foot in that jar.

Step 3: Make her open the jar.

And that’s how you do it.

A normal mother quickly runs to make sure her foot isn’t stuck.  I run for my camera and immediately worry that my next batch of Oats in Jar will taste like feet.

I couldn’t resist asking Gigi what on Earth was going on in this scenario.

In a highly exasperated tone, I was informed that they have formed a search party for the miniature My Little Ponies that have been missing since Sunday.  Susan, did you take them home with you?!?  I am about to feature them on the side of a milk carton green smoothie.

I didn’t even try to resist meeting Kalin at Whole Foods for lunch.

  • field greens
  • spinach
  • carrots
  • beet salad
  • quinoa tabbouleh
  • roasted butternut squash
  • chili tofu
  • bell peppers
  • hummus
  • felafel
  • kale

Meanwhile, I tortured the girls by feeding them Whole Foods cheese pizza and $3.47 worth of fresh fruit from the salad bar.  Geesh.

Please resist telling me that this was not the healthiest of lunches.  It was a treat, and we could do far, far worse.

We did a little window shopping (naturally feather boas and butterfly wings were involved),

and though I can resist buying them more stripper accessories that they don’t need, I can’t say “no” to books.

Can you guess who each book belongs to?  That’s a rhetorical question.

The girls requested “Build Your Own Pizza” for dinner, and though I initially resisted in an attempt to diversify their diet for the day, I gave in.

Dad’s whole wheat pita had pizza sauce, Tofurky Italian Sausage, organic mozzarella and olives, the girls’ had sauce, organic mozzarella and pineapple and my Ezekiel pita had sauce, mushrooms, spinach, basil, olives and eggplant.

It should have been called, “Mom Builds Your Pizza While You Color in the Living Room with Your Smokin’ Hot Dad.”

I resisted the urge to put a picture of Pea Daddy up here.  I said I didn’t want to embarrass him.  He said, “That hasn’t stopped you before.”  I deserved that after the bunny ears shot.

After fifteen minutes in a 425 degree oven, we didn’t resist the urge to eat my creations.

with a salad of spinach, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, pecans, cranberries, sesame sticks and Annie’s Honey Mustard Dressing.

I’d love to stay and chat, but the girls are off to bed and the prospect of watching a championship football game on the couch with Daddy sounds pretty good.  In fact, it’s downright irresistible.

  1. That smoothie in a bowl looks really good! I’ll have to try it sometime.

Love the place mat that your dinner is on, very cool!

  2. Commenting on awesome posts is irresistible.
Gotta love the foot in jar. Um eggplant on pizza sounds incredible!

  3. Kelly Michelle says:

The idea to blend the spinach and almond milk first is genius, I am sitting here just thinking duh to myself and can’t seem to get any further than that. This would have made my last 8976986 green smoothies much easier.

  4. kalin says:

i love that i’m unattractively hiding in the back of the boa pic. sexy.

  5. Sara says:

Why would anyone tell you that’s not a healthy lunch for your kids? Sounds OK to me!

And oh man, D— in a Box is still one of the funniest things I ever saw. Did you see the Halloween episode of The Office? Michael was dressed up as one of those guys from that skit…three years later. Awesome.

  6. I haven’t had a green smoothie in well over a month! Been craving one lately and now seeing yours makes me really jealous ;) No blender yet! Gah!

  7. Your kids eat FAR better than any kids I know (or me growing up). The SIAB looks delish

  8. I can’t believe I just read a **** in a box in a food blog! You crack me up every time!

I love gigi’s hair- she is such a diva!

  9. Carbzilla says:

Lulu had a beauty spurt – she’s like 10 times cuter than usual which was pretty darn cute to begin with.

Bless you for giving your daughters a fashion clue. The fact that I can curl my hair and don’t dress like a union truck driver took me YEARS of practice.

  10. Vicki says:

That’s exactly what my kids always want from Whole Foods.

Loving the foot in a jar!

  11. Green smoothie milk is so much better. It’s the only way I eat cereal now :-)

BTW the bunny ears shot was funny but would have earned me the same comment from Hunni.

  12. Ashlei says:

You can never go wrong with WF’s hot bar.

What do you think of the Ezekiel pitas?

  13. OMG the My Little Ponies look angelic on the windowsill with the light sort of streaming in. If MLP’s can be artistically captured, you succeeded!

And if pineapple pizza wasn’t the best most awesome topping on a pizza, I dont know what is! LOVE.it.

Being popular and teaching our daughters well. Teaching them about popularity and self esteem and all that jazz. Yes. What a lot of work we have ahead of us! Well, maybe this is easy for you…it surely is not for me as I dont even have my own head on straight (yet!) about it. The social & gender stereotype things. Thanks for your comment tonite, I’ve been mulling it around my noggin’ :)

  14. Ameena says:

There are far worse things than pizza and fruit for lunch! Just head down to the nearest Mickey D’s and you’ll see what I mean!!

  15. Amber says:

LOL at the D!ck in the box!! lol LULU!

  16. Cynthia K says:

I have to smile at all these comments about the girls’ hair, because every time I see a picture of them I feel bad for my own daughter, because her mommy can barely do anything with her own hair, much less pull baby hair into two gorgeous pigtails. Barrettes are the go-to in this house. Your girls should be very thankful for you!

  17. Oh god…I was OBSESSED with My Little Pony. That’s what those are, right?

  18. Lauren says:

That is such a great tip for blending the smoothie. I hate when the spinach gets too gritty and I notice this more with Kale! It kind of makes me gag.

BYOP- LOVE this dinner concept. And I must say, you did a fabulous job for being in charge of all 4 pizzas. I think you should contact Dominos and tell them that you’ve got everything on their “new and improved” pizza. Money back guarantee, please! When a commercial starts off by saying “you say our crust tastes like cardboard and our sauce like ketchup…” that really doesn’t entice me to run out and buy your product. Haha, you need to teach them a thing or two! :)

  19. hahah foot in a jar! at least your child is smart, I use to put my head in a jar…of peanut butter..wait that was last week. Mmm..i should have made my own pizza..instead…i ate half a dominos pizza.

  20. Lindsay says:

    Foot in a Jar.
Genius. haha I love how your first concern is for your oats ;)
And whole foods pizza? Oh mama pea you could feed your kids so much worse!!!! You don’t even have to defend that one. :)

  21. Christine says:

Foot in a jar…LOL!!!! Too funny!

I usually lurk but just wanted to thank you for your blog posts – they brighten every morning for me!

  22. Katie says:

That skit is going to be going through my mind all day… hooray for Friday!

I’ve been having mayjuh pizza cravings recently, too!

  23. Love the foot in a jar hahaha.

    That homemade pizza looks awesome!

  24. Kati says:

I loved this post! And you do a great job of feeding healthy eats to your girls while still letting them enjoy being kids! The build-your-own pizzas looks delish! I’m sure they’re even better when made by mom :)

  25. Caitlin says:

I just recently have started reading your blog and I just have to say you have the cutest little girls! I love the pigtails :) its reminds me of being little with my sister. cute cute! fun blog, love it!
    -Caitlin

  26. Susan says:

I left with photos of your chocolate covered children eating vegan cupcakes off the floor, but no ponies! I swear!!

  27. I love make your own pizza night!!

  28. K says:

That SNL skit is up there with schweatty balls -it will never get old. Mother Lover though was the Jan Brady of those skits.

  29. I fell asleep early last night, but CD told me what happened in the game last night. Poor TX quarterback. :(

Lots of pizza love in this post. How ’bout you fly to Nashville and build some for me and CD? Gigi and Lulu can play with our pups and Pea Daddy and CD can watch sports. :)

  30. brandi says:

i love all the pizza in this post, except that now that’s all I want for lunch and that is NOT what I brought with me.

    what a fun lunch date!

  31. skinnyrunner says:

i swear ive played foot in a jar before…

  32. Ouch! the foot in the jar looks painful. I miss the days when my feet were tiny enough to do that.

I am totally jealous of the girl’s my little pony collection. I miss them!

  33. You are so cute. Love the pictures. I want to come over pizza and my little ponies!!! What fun.
Luckily, I’m playing with my new toy today, and couldn’t be happier about it! Stop on a little later to see what it is!
Also, thanks for your vote on the bangs!!! It’s happening!

  34. I am impressed that Gigi has some of the old-school looking Ponies! Don’t they all have the freaky big Bratz-looking heads these days?! I made sure my 4-year-old niece inherited my Ponies from the very-wholesome 80s, back when they didn’t have eyes the size of a giant squid’s.

  35. Holly says:

whole foods please. gah, hot bar. so good. i can’t take my eyes off of it. that and lulu’s FIAJ. just like DIAB…only better.

  36. Erin says:

LMAO at foot in a jar! I woulda dashed for the camera too.

    <—-lacking some basic maternal skillz

And who on earth would lecture you about what you feed your kids for lunch?

  37. Pizza’s not especially bad for you. If there’s haters, it’s because they’re jealous they didn’t have any ;) Whole foods pizza is yummy. I always bribe my 4 year old with their mac and cheese at the hot bar, though. That does the trick for me!

  38. susan says:

i pulled up your post at work b/c sometimes when i read it on my phone i can’t appreciate the cuteness of all your faces in the pictures…

but sometimes the photography is too clear!

*cough* check the cliffhangers in lulu’s nose*cough*

    hahahahahahahahahahahaha

dont tell her i said this or she’ll give me that killer stink eye again!

  39. gina (fitnessista) says:

i’m so glad you chose the orange dress. they’re all gorg but that one was by far my favorite :D
i haven’t had a pita pizza in FOREVER!
hope you have a wonderful weekend
    xoxo

  40. bitt says:

I’m sure the pizza you made was much better than whole foods version. ;-)

  41. Sana says:

Loveee the make your own pizza idea :)

You will look amazing in that dress ;)

  42. I finally tried something similar to a smoothie in a bowl… holy yum!!! :)

Your girls are adorable, I want my (future) little girls to wear tutus and fairy wings!! :)

  43. Jenny says:

Most of my breakfasts are just vehicles for peanut butter. Whatever, it’s a nice cover ;)

haha that SNL skit is the best! And Lulu’s version is even better.
