Sick and Wrong

Two things I hate to admit being: sick and wrong.  I know I’ve been griping on and off about a cold for the last week, but it hit me like a ton of bricks yesterday.

I woke up Sunday morning at 4 am feeling like Oprah, Steadman AND Gail were all sitting on my chest.

“Hey, let’s sit on her!”

I’d like to quash any beliefs that I am always sick or that it has anything to do with the fact that I don’t eat meat or much dairy.  Aside from the fact that vegetarian and vegans have been shown to have stronger immune systems than meat eaters, thus making them less susceptible to illness, we actually have gotten sick just this frequently in past years as well.  It goes with the territory of having young kids who pick their noses, lick shopping cart handles and brush their teeth and then throw their toothbrush on the floor.  Plus this year, Gigi’s at preschool three days a week, which means she’s exposed to twenty other nose pickers, cart lickers and toothbrush flingers.

I’m not a big believer in antibiotics, so I’m giving myself two more days before I call in the big guns.  In the meantime, I’m pushing the fluids,

and getting a lot of rest.

That, my friends, is a picture of my bed.  At 3 a.m. this morning, I was coughing so much I was afraid I’d wake everyone, so I picked my left lung up off the floor and ventured downstairs.  I must have been ill to think that watching The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 in the middle of the night was a good idea.  I blame it on the Ny-ny-ny-ny-ny-ny-nyquil.

Here’s further proof of my illness:

She’s sporting the mullet, clothes that she slept in last night and a shiner that I still don’t understand how she got from being pinned by Gigi against the work bench.  Does Daddy have them building a new entertainment center while he’s in charge?  All I know is it better be big enough to hold a new Blue Ray player.

I’ve also been drinking tea like Dr. Drew asked me to star on the next season of Tea Rehab.  I’m switching varieties more than I’m switching underwear, just to keep things interesting.

Between Shambo Lulu, my yoga pants wearing, uni-lung possessing self, and a glammed out Gigi, wearing a hoody dress with cable knit tights and ankle boots, we were a sight to see at the grocery store.  We picked up some essentials.

The juice and veggie burgers were so I didn’t have to make dinner or juice for the family tonight (so selfish), the soup and Nyquil need no explanation, and the Cranberry Orange Nut Bread Clif Bar was just because seasonal things always make me feel better.  Well, except for that George Michael song, “Last Christmas” (edited: originally I though this was Boy George…because they are both British and you know, Georges), which I got to enjoy my slightly intoxicated brother’s version of on Thanksgiving.  His lyrics offended even me.

I’d hoped a seasonal craft would help perk us up, so we made the first of what I’m sure will be MANY snowflakes.

Lulu though it was hilarious to grab the snowflakes and run before we could tape them up on the windows.

I eventually wore her down by poking her in her bad eye.

I was then treated to my own version of The Nutcracker Suite.  About halfway through the performance, though, it turned into the Banana Phone dance.  I’m calling it a Glee inspired mash-up.

This was my fifth bowl of soup in the last 24 hours.  I now slosh when I walk (cough* David Hasselhoff *cough).

Speaking of sloshed, I’m currently contemplating which cocktail I’d like as my nightcap.

I’m going to go with the Nyquil and I see Bride Wars is On Demand.  It’s going to be a long night.

  1. Hey Lady….I am sooo sorry you’re feeling like crap. Not really any way to sugar coat it. Hugs. As my email also said here’s to wishing you well, and soon!

In the meantime, I can’t believe you’re juicing and cleaning the juicer. I dont clean my juicer when well, let alone when sick. Hats off to you!

Cranberry Orange Nut Bread Clif Bar-how is it?
And that soup? How is that?

I have seen both and have up til now, passed. But if they meet the Mama Pea approval stamp, I’ll try em too!

In the meantime, here-here to vegans having great immune systems. It’s just that germy toddler thing that will getcha every time.

    Hugs my dear :)

  2. Whit says:

I hope the Peas get to feeling better soon!

  3. Marissa says:

I hope you start to feel better! :)

  4. Feel better soon, my darling!

  5. Melissa S. says:

so sorry you’re not feeling well. keep chugging that nyquil, i mean soup.

  6. Awww…so sorry you aren’t feeling any better. Being sick is miserable, isn’t it?

You are totally right about vegans having a higher immune system though, don’t let anyone tell you any differently! I have not gotten sick once in the 3 years since going vegan, even when everyone else around me is hacking up a lung!

That soup looks delicious, just the thing for a cold. Slosh away!

  7. Shelby says:

    FEEL BETTER SARAH!!!

I’ve gotten sick more than ever this year too. I think I’ve been sick more times this year than any other year!

  8. Mama Pea, it’s George Micheal, not Boy George – now I have Last Christmas aaand Karma Chameleon in my head :)
This whole post (as usual) made me laugh. Get better soon!!!

  9. Hope you feel better soon. Being sick with two little ones is no fun! Well, being sick at all is not fun–it’s just harder when you have little ones to care for. They are adorable though and I’m sure they give you plenty of entertainment while you are on your sick bed :)

  10. Lauren says:

SO sorry to hear that you are under the weather! Well, at least you are getting through it before the the craze of Christmas sets in. See, there is always a silver lining. And I am sure that you have wonderful little helpers to keep you sane (or rather make you go insane! :) Either way, lots of love and that is always the best medicine.

    Take care sweet girl. ;)

  11. Lauren says:

Ugh… being sick is no fun. I hope you feel better very soon!

  12. Hope you feel better, girl. I can’t even IMAGINE being sick with 2 kids running around.
    Oh, I love LuLu’s mullet.

  13. Feel better!!! Those darn school germs are killer…

  14. VeggieGirl says:

    Get well sooooooooon!

  15. I hope you feel better soon!

Being sick in such a bummer :(

  16. Kelly Michelle says:

I mean you probably could just skip the course of antibiotics and eat a conventionally raised chicken instead, isn’t that the same thing? ugh, feel better. I hope for your sake that you ended up watching ANYTHING other than Bride Wars.

  17. katherine says:

Go go green juice!! Hope you feel much better soon!

  18. K says:

I’m glad you didn’t pick up Walgreen’s brand because that stuff is nightmare inducing – seriously! If you want to dream that you’re living the movie 2012, take a shot of that.

As a vegetarian, I haven’t been sick-sick in a LONG time. This year just kicked my ass in terms of colds. Feel better!! I hope you don’t have what I had because it took me almost 2.5 weeks to start to feel better.

  19. Its weird.. I seem to get sick MORE now that I actually eat healthy than when I was in college and lived on beer and $4.99 large pizzas. Perhaps its due to the fact I work with children who are constantly sneezing on me and touching my face?!

FEEL BETTER.. hope that juice kicks in :)

  20. Kimberly says:

Hey, Mama, I just wanted to mention that I staunchly believe in the immune-boosting power of garlic. I’ve been eating 2 raw cloves a day for years, and despite being a nail-biter, haven’t gotten sick since 2004. Sure, you might smell like an 80-year-old Nonna, but at least Hubs is obligated to bear it ;)

  21. rhodeygirl says:

Hope you feel better Mama Pea.

Might I suggest something unconventional? Whenever I coughed a lot as a kid (seriously) my mom would give me 1/2 a glass of warm milk (gag) with a splash of cognac and honey. Now I have graduated to a shot of cognac with a dash of honey. It doesn’t taste fabulous, but somehow it always helps me.

  22. rhodeygirl says:

OOhhh ALSO! Might a giveaway make you feel better? ‘Cuz I’m hosting a good one!

  23. Barbara says:

Hope you feel better soon! I too have been consumming copious amounts of tea that would cause both Dr.Drew and Dr. Phil to stage an intervention! Get lots of rest!!! :)

  24. Hope you feel better soon Mama! I’m definitely a believer in soup and tea :) It’s also great to see someone else shops at Kroger and Target for their cough medicine, ha ha.

  25. That picture of Oprah cracked me up. Hope you feel better soon!!

  26. Kati says:

Ah, being sick is no fun :/ But you’re right. Seasonal things ARE fun and that bar sounds yum. I can’t wait to have germy sick kids around my house…seriously! I want to be a mom :)

  27. I hope you feel better soon!!!

  28. Rose says:

    Hope you feel better!

  29. Mama Pea, dairy is the WORST thing for anyone that has a cold. It makes me cringe when I see people eating it when they are already all congested. Mucous mucous mucous. So, stick to non-dairy lifestyle. One quick question though…how do you get your calcium? KIDDING!

I am all for natural methods of healing, but as soon as I can’t breathe out of one nostril, I’m guzzling the Nyquil. I get the generic Kroger kind as well. Good stuff!

  30. Sarah says:

I KNEW you could work that story in somehow. I bow to you and your mad skillz.

  31. Oh noes! I’m so sorry to hear that you are sick. Boo! That does indeed stink. I don’t do antibiotics either unless I’m near death. Do you guys like Emergen-C? It’s good for an immune boost and you would be able to add it to your juice.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  32. Kristie Lynn says:

Nice soup choice – the cashew carrot ginger is one of my favorites! Hope your evening cocktails gave you some solid rest!

  33. Peas feel better soon!

At least you get first rate entertainment what with the ballerinas and tripped-out Bride Wars… :)

  34. Alison says:

The green juice will heal you say! IT WILL HEAL YOU!

I typed that while dropped to my knees, arms over my head and eyes rolled back into my head. Good thing I can type without looking.

Got any breastmilk in the freezer still? Oh wait, never mind. You’re vegan! No milk for you! I know that’s the only thing stopping you from thawing that last bag of expressed milk and making chocolate chip cookies with it.

  35. Ameena says:

I am so sorry you are sick…I hope you feel better soon!!

  36. Cindy says:

Sick and still hysterical! Nothing slows you down eh?

I agree with Ali…green juice …hay RAW CRANBERRIES are anti viral! I’ve been eating/drinking them and we have a toddler too…no sniffles yet!

get better soon and if you make breastmilk cookies…please don’t post it!

    hAHAHA

  37. I hope you feel better soon! All of those fluids should hopefully help. Always seems to work for me!

  38. Eek! So sorry you’re feeling crappy. I’m glad it didn’t ruin your Thanksgiving, though. I got sick with the flu on Tuesday, and it totally ruined the Thanksgiving.
Those snowflakes are too cute. Hope you feel better today, dear!

  39. brandi says:

I LOVE that picture of Lulu laughing- what a great moment to catch on camera :)

Hope you’re feeling better! And Bride Wars won’t help, sadly :\ except that I wanted all of their clothes in that movie!

  40. Erin says:

    Damn germy kids.

    I kid…sorta. ;)

Try Mucinex. Nyquil is gonna dry out your sinuses and might lead you down the path to a full-on sinus infection.

    Feel better pretty-pea.

  41. I hate the feeling of getting socked by a cold like that! I totally agree with you that green juice feels like the best remedy. And avoiding mucus-inducing cheese but you already do that :)

  42. holly says:

ummm i watched sisterhood of the traveling pants 2 not sick over thanksgiving…what does that say about me? haha.

feel better mama pea! take er’ easy and i hope you never have the misfortune of even oprah alone sitting on your chest. that wouldn’t be good for anybody :)

  43. I hope you feel better soon! All of that fresh juice and hot tea should do the trick. :)

  44. Vicki says:

Oh no! I’m sorry you are sick. I’ve found that I get sick as a vegan a lot less frequently than I used to, but with kids it’s inevitable that you are going to catch something at some point.

    Feel better soon!!

  45. lizzy says:

i don’t like admitting i’m sick or wrong either. However, once i admit i am sick, i like to milk it for all its worth :) :) hope you feel better!!

  46. skinnyrunner says:

oprah sitting on you could really hurt… i mean, she’s no small lady.
hope you feel better soon so you don’t have to throw back too many of those niquil martinis.

  47. Love that seasonal Clif bar flavah! Your body/heart/tum tum will thank you. Get well soon!!

  48. Paula says:

Oh, I do hope you get better soon! I hope you went with the NiteTime one. Have you tried goldenseal. You can get it in pill or tincture form. I go for the tincture one. You can even get it respberry of orange flavored.(Freddies-health food section) It helps be get better fast!

  49. Evan Thomas says:

Feel better! I just picked up that soup for the first time and had it with lunch, it was great but a little thin(I think I’m just more of a stew person)

  50. Tiffany S. says:

Soooooo sorry you’re sick! But not as sorry as the Haz Mat team that was sent in to disinfect your local grocery store!

I sure hope you’d seen Sisterhood of the TP 1 or you were gonna be soooo lost! (I accidentally bought the book and read one chapter before realizing I was about 20 years too old for it. But finished it anyway)

I’m happy to see that you can honestly blame your illness on your kids’ germs and throw them under the bus before questioning your vegetarianism. That’s devotion and I, for one, like it!

Glad your sense of humor is still well and lively! Feel better soon!

  51. Marie says:

You should check out Planetary Herbals. They make kids cough syrup that rocks, and an immune booster that my 2 girls beg for every morning (1 and 3). It’s been good to us so far this winter (fingers crossed). And they make adult versions too:)

  52. Lisa says:

Hope you are feeling better soon :)

  53. Gahhh, I hope you feel better :( Keep chugging that juice! I just picked up some seasonal Cliff bars today myself :)
This comment is lame. Just wanted to pop in and say hi <3

  54. So sorry you are sick momma! I hope the tea helps and so does the soup. I tend to drink a ton of tea too especially when I’m sick. At least the girls can keep you entertained.

  55. Hydration is the way to go. Feel better…your family needs you to feed them more fiber!

  56. Jenny says:

    Feel better Mama!!

haha I think the Nutcracker and Banana Phone are a perfect Christmas mash-up ;) Keep getting your juices in!

  57. Feel better soon, hon!!!!! Sounds like you’re doing all the right things…keep getting lots of rest :)

  58. I’m sorry you are sick! It sucks that moms don’t really get “sick days”. I always go to school and work when I am sick because taking care of a little one at home is much harder than school and work :)

  59. Lindsay says:

hmm, Oprah + Gail + Stedman is a lot of weight. You must be feeling pretty terrible :-)
At least sickness does not affect your sense of humour lol, though it might be neat to see what kind of a post you could come up with after a few hours of Bride Wars and a couple cap-fuls of Nyquil…… haha

  60. Krista says:

I hear ya on kids getting sick! My daughter is down with H1N1 for the second time! Ugh. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can avoid it again.

That Clif bar was pretty good as was Bride Wars which we watched yesterday.

  61. Hayley says:

I never for one second would’ve attributed your sickness to the way you eat. I would’ve definitely said it had to do with Gigi being at preschool more often! You’re probably the healthiest person I “know” so in no way would you be sick because of how you eat.

I love the pictures of Lulu & Gigi dancing around the living room! So darn cute…how did you make those snowflakes? I LOVE them!!

You might as well hook me up to an IV of tea because I drink gallons of it on a daily basis…

Did you ever get to watch Bride Wars? I enjoyed that movie in a girly, funny sort of way. :)

  62. elise says:

ghetto snowflakes! thats my contribution to our floor’s holiday decorating at work. i think my patients think im a 4 year old.

ps glee basically saved me on my layovers. im obsessed with puck. no joke, i want to have his baby.
