Guest Post: Pea Daddy in the House

I’ve got all sorts of excuses for why I’m not doing a standard post tonight: namely that my cold has worsened and I now sound like Peter Brady going through puberty.  Please ignore the fact that this in no way affects my typing ability.

Also, I have Round Two of my back injections first thing in the morning.

Don’t be scared for me.  I’m happy to have the drugs time to myself.

When my husband (aka Pea Daddy) said that he had written a guest post for today, several thoughts crossed my mind:

  1. Monday Night Football must really be terrible tonight;
  2. The Blazers must not be on TV; and/or
  3. He must want me to go to bed and get lots of rest for tomorrow;

Well, I was halfway right on Option 3.  Well played, Pea Daddy, well played.

I thought Daddy would be a good reviewer for the Soda Stream machine we received last week.  The man loves his root beer like I like E! News: though it’s not the healthiest habit in the world, an evening wouldn’t be complete without it.

I told him to “smize.”  Crickets.

“Smile with your eyes.”  Stink eye.

“Make love to the camera.”  Oh yeah, baby.

So here’s my guy.  However, because I wear the pants in this blog, I might poke in from time to time in bold italics. :)

Recently my wife asked me to do a guest post.  The conversation went something like this:

Mama Pea (he doesn’t call me Mama Pea, by the way) : “Would you like to do a guest post on the blog?”

Me: “Sure.  Can I write about the Blazers?”

Mama Pea: “No”.

Me: “The Mariners?”

Mama Pea: “No.”

Me: “Any sports whatsoever?”

Mama Pea: “Umm, no – it’s a vegan, healthy living blog with stories about our children.  Why on Earth would I ask you to do a guest post about sports?”

Me: “Variety?” (I think this was an embellishment here: he knows what the blog is about…I force him to read it and then give him a quiz each night:  True or False: I showered today;  True or False: Gigi peed her pants today; True or False: Today has been a hard one;  True or False: That’s what she said. )

Well, Mama Pea had her motives (Muhahahahaha) and wanted me to write about the Soda Stream machine that we recently received in the mail.  So, here’s my first official guest post:

Being married to a food blogger has its perks (but not in my bra!).  For one, I get guilt free sports viewing on a nightly basis.  With 82 regular season Blazers games televised in HD, this is a huge perk for me (quit saying perk).  Another perk (frick) is when a box shows up on the front porch.  Oddly enough, as I type that, it seemed clean in my head.  Now that I reread it, I believe that is perfectly set up for dozens of “that’s what she said” jokes (Are you really going to go there, hon?).  Anyway, I love a good deal (Costco engagement ring, what?) and love free stuff even more.

There have been some hits and misses that have shown up in our mailbox over the past year, but this one was definitely a hit.  I have to send out a big thank you to the folks at Soda Stream, who were kind enough to send our family the Pure Soda Stream Machine and an expanded starter kit with over a dozen different flavors to try.

I’m impressed (that’s what she said).  The machine is pretty easy to use.  If you do get one, I suggest you read the directions carefully, listen to your wife carefully, or do a trial run when your wife isn’t looking.  I chose the last option – in the garage and out of sight from Mama Pea. (You are condoning spousal deceit?  Really?!)

All I’ll say is that, hypothetically speaking, when you go to make the soda, make sure the bottle is screwed ALL THE WAY ON otherwise it will spray all over you and your garage.  Again, hypothetically speaking, once you make the soda, be sure to let it stand for a few seconds before you unscrew it from the machine, otherwise, it will spray all over you.  Lastly, and again hypothetically, if you pour the syrup into the carbonated water, do a little bit at a time otherwise it will fizz up out of the bottle and all over your garage.  Again – I repeat – this is all hypothetical.  (This scenario is so ripe with comments I don’t know where to start, except I now know why the hood of my car is all sticky.  Again.)

Seriously, the machine is really easy to use.  The girls and I have tried the root beer, orange, regular cola, diet cola, and lemon lime.  The root beer (or as Gigi says “root beard”) is no Virgil’s Root Beer, (this is a blatant effort for Daddy to get the Virgil’s company to send him free root beer) but it is pretty good.

You do have to experiment with the amount of carbonation and/or syrup you add for each flavor.  The diet cola is similar in taste to RC Cola and not my beloved Diet Pepsi (or my beloved Diet Coke…the battle wages on).

The Soda Stream breakdown:

Pros:

  • Cheaper than buying canned/bottled soda;
  • The Soda Stream website touts the economic and environmental benefits of the product, so I’ll skip that; (tsk, tsk, so lazy)
  • Nutritionally, its about 1/3rd less the calories and sugar that other soft drinks;
  • Tastes pretty good; and
  • Easy to use and clean.  (That’s so weird, this is why I married you!)

Cons:

  • Having to hear a constant chorus of “can I have some ‘so-duh’?” from Gigi and Lulu;
  • Annoying air-horn like sound when you add the carbonation; (much like a nagging wife) and
  • Dreading having to buy the carbonation refills ($34.99/each).

Thank you again to the Soda Stream folks!

And thanks to Pea Daddy for the guest post.   One thing he forgot to mention is that upon my sampling of the diet soda, I got the worst, room-clearing, Lulu crying “Mama STINKY!” gas.  I’m not ashamed to admit it.  I never had a problem with Splenda when I used to put six packets in my coffee and another six in my oatmeal every day, but now that I’ve switched to stevia, my body just can’t take it.  I thought you should know, so you can buy a dog to blame it on.

I promise to be back tomorrow with a “normal” post

In the meantime, I am resting up, discontinuing food and drink shortly, putting on my pants with an elastic waistband (my favorite kind) and getting ready for the big poke.

Oh, and tomorrow’s procedure too.

  1. Shockingly, Pea Daddy is clearly a faster writer than you are….you published about 1 hr and 10 mins ahead of your usual schedule. But not like I was counting or anything.

Seriously, best of luck, wishes, health, and many comforting blessings with your on your procedure tomorrow. OMG I cannot even imagine. I didnt have an epidural, I had a natural childbirth. I do believe in natural childbirth but a huge motivating factor was the sheer terror an epi would have given me. Not that is comforting. Sorry. It’s a really long way around the horn to simply tell you, I care, I am thinking of you, and wishing you optimal health :)

With that thank you for the kind comment you left on my blog tonite; I am proud to call you a friend, too :)

And on wayyyy lighter matters…I can do 12 packets of Truvia a day. Or Splenda. I admit I can do it. But stevia…ohman. Girl. I cannot hang either. It tears my tummy up. Not to mention, I much prefer the fake taste of chemicals than the chemically taste of “natural” stevia. I know, I am sick. But at least I’m honest :)

And with that, wishing you love & health
    xoxo
    averie

  2. You are so worth staying up past my bedtime for. And that’s something I don’t even say to my boyfriend.
And nice job, Pea Daddy! Well, played, well played.

  3. Oh my goodness this was above and beyond! You two are a riot! Love the side comments :)

    Wishing you a pain-free day!

  4. Yay Pea Daddy! Oops, I think I called him “Papa Pea” in the post where I mentioned him. My apologies.

Question, and this may be a stupid one, but is the plain carbonated water any good to drink? I have hopes that it will taste like La Croix mineral water…

  5. Alison says:

I like your braids in that first pic!

Thanks P. Daddy for the rocking guest post! You guys are seriously PEAS in a POD over there – sticky car hoods and all.

    Dear Soda Stream,

If you are reading this, I drink TONS of seltzer! *wink wink* I would have no choice but to feature Soda Stream on my blog every. day. Mmmm seltzer. Root beard. Carbonated green juice.

    *Ahem*

Feel better Mama Pea – sending tons of healing vibes and (gentle) e-hugs your way.

  6. That looks like such a fun gadget to have around! I would love making my own root beer. I haven’t had soda in years but it might be a fun treat occasionally. Great guest post!

  7. Cynthia K says:

Love the guest post with commentary! I’m sitting here snickering quietly into my coffee so I don’t wake the household. I hope your back feels better after all this.

  8. Girl…you CRACK ME UP! Loved Pea Daddy’s post, and even better with your commentating it! Hillllllaarrrious!!!

Hope the poke went, I mean goes, well! :)

  9. I love Pea Daddy’s guest post! Hope your back injections go well this morning…

  10. Lauren says:

Haha LOVE IT!!! I am trying to convince my other half to write a guest post but I fear the same things that you did. I will wake up to a post all about Beer, the Eagles, and midnight cookie radings.

Oh those boys! Sometimes they really surprise us! :)

Yours is such a keeper girl! :)

  11. Shelby says:

Love Pea Daddy’s guest post and I especially love his shirt. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Wishing you the best of luck with your procedure!!

  12. rhodeygirl says:

I wonder if the Penguin uses a different mechanism because ours has NEVER sprayed anywhere! Weird! (Did I just jinx us??)

Wishing you and your family a happy Thanksgiving!!!

  13. chand says:

    GO KU!!!

  14. This was toooo funny! I literally had to bite my fist to keep myself from laughing out loud and waking up my room-mate.
Good luck with your procedure, and enjoy your carbonate beverages! (The idea of carbonated juice fascinates me :) )

  15. Sending well wishes for your procedure tomorrow!

And yep, I want one of those soda thingys.

  16. Sarah R says:

Wonderful post! Good luck with your procedure. Lots of thoughts and prayers your way.

On a side note, is the husband a KU fan?

  17. Okay, love your posts daily. They always make me laugh. During the paragraph where he was talking about trying the machine in the garage and you didn’t make a comment I thought something was wrong if I thought their were so many dirty comments to make and you didn’t! Alas, you saved it for the end of the paragraph. Thank you Mama Pea for making me laugh again. :)

  18. Katie says:

Daddy speaks! I love it, and I love your commentary.

Hope your back is back to normal and Peter Pan is gone. Have a great day!

  19. Love the guest post from Pea Daddy (and your commentary). Hope everything goes well today and that you get some relief and relaxation :)

  20. Katie says:

ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK sorry but Pea Daddy’s shirt made me happy.

LMAO at the garage scene I just see it now… Totally something I would do.

And yes Mama Pea he is funny not as funny as the master with your tutelage I think he could be a suitable blogger. Good job on the training.

Feel better soon hope the drugs kick in soon.

  21. Awesome guest post P-Daddy! :D

P.S. Why does Marsha look like a man-baby-yeah, in that picture? Not her best moment.

  22. your comments crack me up. omg. you are way too funny.

  23. Therese says:

When I asked my husband to write a guest post his response was, “Can I write about beer.” Oddly enough he still has yet to make his cameo on the blog…

Diet Coke lovers unite. The hubbie is DP (Diet Pepsi) all the way, but I will always prefer DC :)

  24. allijag says:

Nicely done Pea Daddy! Mike loves the Soda Stream as well – he makes at least 2 every day!

Feel better Mama! Good luck tomorrow!

  25. Carbzilla says:

    Great Guest Post, Pea Daddy!

We, too, love our Soda Stream which we received as a birthday present last year (I have yet to receive one free sample in the mail of ANYTHING – what am I doing wrong?). My niece says “Thoda,” but we’ve never actually used all the flavorings. I have to admit to walking through the soda aisle at the QFC now and feeling superior, thinking “I can DO that.”

Good luck with the shot! Hope you get a chance to get some rest!

  26. holly says:

feel better mama pea, and thank you daddy pea for your lovely guest post!

  27. Gena says:

Thanks for the guest post!!! I’m glad you didn’t write about sports (Thanks, Mama Pea). But glad you brought your own humor and sass to the blog!

  28. brandi says:

great review. and good to know about the garage trial :)

hope everything goes well this morning!

  29. kalin says:

i have so many things i should be writing (have fun getting poked… and at the doctors office…)
but why is daddy pea wearing a KU shirt?
    does he love kansas?
would he like to go for me?
there will be a roast deer.
    and bibles.

also, daddy pea didn’t mention the guilt free sports to josh did he? i don’t want him getting ideas…

  30. Cindy says:

That was great… another morning in need of a belly laugh and you (both) aptly provided!
I loved your add ins! cracked me up!!!

Thinking of you this morning Mama pea…
    hope it all goes well!
    xo

  31. Sarah says:

    What a great post!

I am so jealous that you were able to sample the Soda Stream. I would love to try it, except I agree that my kids would want it all the time as well.

  32. I prayed for you this morning Mama Pea. I hope you get more relief this time than last. Praying for you still.

I laughed out loud literally at the dog comment at the end. That’s one of the reasons I can’t have splenda any more now that I use agave and stevia. I’m just glad we have two dogs to blame it on. And we always do :-)

  33. Evan Thomas says:

Haha, awesome guest post. He should definitely make a Papa Pea blog about whatever he wants; there aren’t enough of us men around here

  34. Low says:

Awww this post was like a dream come true! So glad to know that Daddy Pea is as charming and witty as you are! Well maybe slightly less so, since he couldn’t work in a proper poke reference… but still a noble effort!

Thanks for the review Daddy Pea!

  35. Hope your procedure goes/went well!

Well done Pea Daddy (gee that sounds like P. DIDDY! Coincidence???), and congratulations on the Soda Stream. The boyf gave me one for my birthday in April, and for what it’s worth, I use it once or twice weekly to make my seltzer and still have not gone through a whole CO2 canister. It’ll last you a good long time for sure!

I will also share my technique for perfect carbonation.
    1. Screw the bottle in good and tight (I hereby forego any TWSS jokes–quota filled in above post, lol),
    2. take 3 good 1-second-ish pulls on the lever (until you hear aforementioned air horn sound by the third pull).
    3. Twist the bottle just loose enough to release some air, then screw tight again.
    4. Repeat steps 1-3 twice more.

And there is your unsolicited Soda Stream tutorial from another big soda fan. I drink plain seltzer with a lime wedge every. night. It got me off the mommy merlot (MizFit’s term for Diet Coke) and for that I am forever grateful.

  36. Emily says:

You absolutely crack me up – I loved reading your interjections!
Hope your procedure went well ~
    emily.

  37. Great guest post!

I hope your injection went well!!!!

  38. Pea Daddy’s post was great! I loved your commentary in bold, though, haha.
Good luck tomorrow and good luck with the treatments!

  39. Paula says:

Nice work Papa Pea. You two crack me up! Sorry about your back. Get some rest and feel better soon.

  40. Deirdre says:

Loved this guest post. Your husband is just as special as you are (and I mean that in a good way!) Oh and I love sports but yes I don’t read your blog for sports. I hope you feel better soon!

  41. Hayley says:

Thank you Daddy Pea for the guest post!! I had so much fun reading it along with Mama Pea’s input. I hope you do more of these in the future!! I’m smiling now as I write this just thinking back over some of what was written.

  42. Daddy Pea and my CD would get along so well…it’s almost scary.

CD had me look at rings at Costco – I was actually really impressed with their selection. Speaking of Costco, I was just there today and forgot to look for the Sabra Artichoke hummus. Shoot!

Jealous of the soda streamer. Totally caved and bought some sugar-free Torani PB syrup this week…good thing we have not one, but two dogs. ;)

  43. K says:

I know I’m Tardy for the Party but I loved the guest post! Great reviews and the best commentary I’ve seen in a long time!

  44. carolinebee says:

Hahahhaha, gooood shtuff. That last pic Gigi has the-frat guy hazing the new pledge- face :D
Oh mannnn, Feb.19th, Celtics-Blazer’s it’s onnnnnn hahah…Have the best T-day my favorite Pea family!!!!

  45. elise says:

awwwwww. hey papa pea!! so glad we were able to steal you away from the blazers for a guest post. not just because i like hearing about the soda stream, but because now i can use this post to rope kyle into doing a guest post…
luckily for me (and unfortunately for him) neither of us dont give a crap about NY nba teams and our fantasy football team is already completely out of the playoffs. i wonder what excuse he will use…
