Working Hard or Hardly Working?

Sorry for the absence today, friends, I was working hard.

I’ve been putting in a lot of late hours on this big writing project I’ve undertaken and it’s to the point now where my brain is so fried that I turn to Daddy Pea and say, “Is ‘anytime’ one word or two? Is “two-year-old” hyphenated or not?  Where the H did Spencer Pratt learn sex ed that he thinks a vasectomy is temporary?” Okay, you caught me.  I’ve slipped a little mindless viewing of “The Hills” in with my hours of writing and rewriting.

I know I’m not the only one who is annoyed by the phrase, “Working hard or hardly working?“  If I had a dollar for every flirty old man that said that to me when I was a checker at a grocery store during high school, well, I’d have four dollars.  I peaked late in life.

So I’ve elected to try to use that annoying phrase as much as I can in this little post, just because I can.

Yesterday, I was feeling guilty for not spending a lot of one-on-one time playing on the floor with Daddy the girls, so while Gigi was as school, Lulu and I were hardly working.

She was working hard at that puzzle.

She also worked hard on building a block tower and knocking it down.

I was working hard at trying to make Lulu laugh.

It was hardly working.

We tried our new Soda Stream machine, which is just about the coolest thing ever.

I am addicted to carbonating every beverage I can find.  Carbonated green juice?  Why not?  Carbonated coffee?  Sign me up.  I’m trying to talk Daddy into doing a guest post to review the machine, but I don’t have the energy right now to work hard to properly persuade him.

For the rest of the day, I totally blew off all of my writing responsibilities to just enjoy my time with my girls.

It worked.

After we got them to bed last night, though, I  was working hard until almost 2 a.m.  This morning when I finally dragged myself out of bed at 8:15 a.m. I could see that Daddy was hardly working at his daddy duties.

Lulu got herself breakfast.

Gigi drew on the wall while wearing a swimsuit.

The living room inexplicably looked like this.

I hardly worked at throwing together some fruit and cereal.

  • 1 really green mango
  • stevia
  • Kashi Go Lean
  • Pumpkin Spice Granola
  • cinnamon

I worked hard on the treadmill for about 45 minutes and tried to figure out why Spencer’s friend Charlie is still single.  His greasy haired, porn mustache, smarmy sidekick look works.

HOT.

I finished my workout and cleaned the girls and myself up.  I went and got Gigi a snack while Daddy did yardwork.  Gigi returned to the living room only to say, “Lulu got in the curl creme!!!”

She was working hard at managing her fly away hair.

I had to laugh and grab my camera.

And laugh some more.

The only real casualty of the situation was “Blankie” who I had to wash, but who now has glossy shine and luster like he has never had.  I tossed Lulu a similar white blankie that my mom had bought for just an occasion.

It hardly worked. No, it’s not my blankie…it’s POS-TER blankie.“  My kid needs to work hard on her pronounciation, but I was still impressed she knew the word “imposter.”

Meanwhile, Gigi worked hard at her Lulu impression by getting in Lulu’s high chair and giving me the stink eye.

After the chaos, Daddy took the girls to run errands so I could get some writing done without having to make a couch cushion fort, perform in a talent show or chase kiddos with pot holders.

I took advantage of the free time…

…by spending an extra hour working hard my hair and makeup.  Because I’m so much more productive with a smoky eye and hair twists.

I actually did get a lot of  hard work done.  When the family returned I felt like hardly working at making dinner.  You don’t have to work hard to guess where we ate tonight.

  • spinach
  • romaine
  • carrots
  • celery
  • green pepper
  • beets
  • peas
  • garbanzo beans
  • olives
  • croutons
  • honey mustard dressing

With a cup of harvest vegetable soup.

Gigi worked hard at eating dessert first, last and in between courses.  Chocolate pudding is the great palate cleanser.

Lulu worked that juice box, hard.

So have I done a good job of annoying you with the most idiodic question of all time?  I kind of want to punch myself in the face for writing it.  In other words, do I think this post concept worked

Hardly.

  1. So sorry you’re slammed with real world responsibilities like a job :) and that it’s cut into your blogging time. Darn it, hate it when that happens :)

The curl cream? Yikes I’d have been freaking out. White goop everywhere would not be cool.

I am still havent watched this week’s Hills, it’s my naptime (Skylar’s, not mine) guilty little pleasure. Is it just me or does Stephanie look like she literally lost 40 lbs overnight? I have a coupla theories on that. And it rhymes with poke. Just sayin’.

    Nitey nite mama :)

    xoxo

  2. take care of yourself. I love reading your blog, you are very talented.

  3. kalin says:

how does your hair look cute when you do it, when mine looked terrible? lammmmeeee

also, thought up a great present for the girls next time i come over.
hand held pencil sharpeners! my cousin’s two year old thought it was the best toy ever today. i’m just waiting for the call when jocelyn figures out how to empty it.
will pencil shavings be better or worse than stickers?

  4. I can’t believe how grown up little LuLu is looking! And I love her big blue eyes. The hair cream makes me smile ;)

Your hair looks lovely. And Gigi’s stink eye is HARDLY the deathly stare of Lulu’s! ;) Must be terrible-twos talent!

  5. Jeannie says:

Ah, Sweet Tomatoes (or is it Souplantation where you are?); I would recognize those funky cut beets anywhere.

  6. VeggieGirl says:

I hear ya – hang in there, dear Sarah!

  7. Gigi’s impression of LuLu is HILARIOUS!!!

  8. Kristie Lynn says:

Is it bad that when I read that Lulu said “POS-TER blankie”, I figured she was trying for “poser”? Good thing you cleared that up ;)

  9. Ohhh man. When I was a cashier at a hardware store, I heard the same thing. I always laughed politely, mainly because I was too exhausted from WORKING HARD to fight back.
I need to get to a sweet tomatoes.

  10. Katie says:

Can’t wait to hear about the writing project!

I love Gigi’s curls! So adorable. And Lulu was just trying to help her sista tame them.

I honestly quit watching the hills so thanks for opening up my eyes that such a hot man exists ;)

  11. nicole says:

My day looks just like yours but with 4 kids instead of 2! It’s usually crazy busy, full of imaginary, and messy.

  12. K says:

Break me off a piece of Charlie, man’s got it goin’ on.

I probably would have turned into Kate Gosselin had I seen the curl cream – then again, Lulu looks so cute so maybe not.

  13. Cute!!! You, your girls, your post–cute! xoxo

  14. Zomg Charlie from The hills can not ACT for shizzle….and act is the correct term for that show I can’t stop watching. BTW lulu’s pjs make me smile! I loved those as a kid…except when I got chicken pox and it was hard to scratch!

  15. Shelby says:

Your hair looks hot! Teach me how to do that!

I haven’t watched The Hills at all this season. Kristen just turns me off, I don’t care for that drama. Bring LC back!

  16. *Andrea* says:

seriously every time i read your posts i explode in laughter. to me, you are almost as good as chelsea lately ;) much less vulgar haha. your daughters are so precious!!

  17. Hayley says:

I only have a moment to write before I leave for the airport, but I wanted to say that I am so happy to see a new post! It’s only fair that you have time for yourself and the girls to do what you like – I miss your quirky self but I totally get that you need some time.

I have to tell you that I nearly spit my tea out all over the computer screen (no joke) when I read that about blankie having shiny hair…or a shiny sheen. Either way I was literally “laughing out loud.”

The picture of Gigi in Lulu’s high chair giving you the stinkeye…wow…classic. Watch out for Miss Sassy pants!! :)

  18. maggie says:

You brighten up my weekends with your posts :) Such beautiful daughters you have and glad you have such a sense of humor about the hair goo mess!

    xoxo
    Maggie

  19. Marissa says:

Those curl cream photos a riot!!!!

  20. elise says:

haha, i love the pics of lulu with the hair cream. i have a feeling im going to be one of those “hold on – lemme get the camera” moms too. blogging has turned me into a crazy photog! good thing i left LA, my paparazzi career could really be taking off right now…

  21. Holly says:

hahaha…gah, i love your posts. always working in my opinion. and shoop girl, we need a back view of that hair!!!

  22. gina (fitnessista) says:

will you do a how-to post on how to do your hair like that? i love it!
gigi’s impression of lulu was hilarious. nobody gives the stink eye like lulu, though
hope you’re having a great weekend!

  23. wow, good ol’ Charlie from the Hills. Now that is one COOL guy. No wonder why Spencer wanted to be best friends with him.

Love your hair! How did you do it?

  24. Tiffany S. says:

I’ve probably told you this before, but you are just the best mom ever!

I was too terrified to have children, but if I could have done it the way you’re doing I would have charged in full force.

You are awesome and if the kids every doubt it for one minute, you just tell them that your imaginary friends think so!

So there (tongue raspberry optional, but effective).

  25. I absolutely do hate when ANYTHING interferes with my blogging. And remind me to tell you the story of how I “accidentally tried out” to be Whitney Port on the first season of the Hills. Yes, she was a casted character, and yes, embarrassing “audition” tapes exist of me. It’s a good story. Remind me to tell you the rest later. Maybe, just maybe, if you’re lucky, I’ll blog about that tonight. Hey, thanks for the idea!!!

  26. That stash. It was made for porn.

Those hair twists look awesome! Totally worth it.

  27. You look so pretty with your hair twists. Glad you got some work done and that you got to enjoy some Sweet Tomatoes action.

I’m loving Lulu’s blouse in the hair cream picture. I want one in my size. :)

  28. Stephanie says:

How come you no longer juice?

I do juice sometimes. I don’t post every thing I eat or drink on my blog. I am juicing less, though because I got kind of burnt out on it, so I’m kind of taking a break. I’ve also been so busy lately that cleaning my juicer has seemed kind of daunting!

  29. I hate that phrase. My dad said it all the time until I graduated a year early from High School.

I love that you are capturing all the fun moments with your girls like the hair cream and the bathing suit parties. It will make for good memories when they grow up. I have a scrapbook full of those fun memories from my mom and adore looking though it :-)

  30. rhodeygirl says:

Not to be the annoying party pooper but please DON’T try to carbonate something other than water! The sugars and other things in other liquids can damage the machine. We broke the first machine when PhillyBoy tried to carbonate orange juice for a special surprise.

  31. Melissa S. says:

omg your little ones cream extravaganza reminds me of when my brothers got into a tub of margarine and got it all over their floor…or when they took maple syrup and sprayed it all over the living room carpet, and my parents had to tear it up in the end. at least your little one didn’t do that bad!

PS my dad loves your sense of humor…and the blog. hehehehehe…

  32. Katie says:

Funny, a teased bouffant and a cat-eye is what helps my productivity. I think we should get a Sephora endorsement, yes?

  33. Love it! Love Gigi’s impression of Lulu. Good luck on your writing :)

  34. Love the hair! You are seriously making me consider bangs whenever I finally get my hair cut ;-)

  35. Cindy says:

Love Lulu’s new bangs… she looks older though! hair cuts always change thier faces so fast!

    it all works for me!
I LOVE that you let Lu get her hands all goopy…those are the best times!

  36. yoda says:

    Your kids are sooooooooooooo adorable!!!!

What brand of stevia do you use?

  37. Gliding Calm says:

lulu with the hair cream. pricelesS!! ahhh
